@quartata did you read it?

@Zgarb Oh, that's great. Thanks!

Their GHC installation seems to be outdated though.

Are we really graduating?
in PPCG Graduation Design Discussion, Jan 9 at 22:43, by NinjaBearMonkey
@TheNumberOne It's November 1 but

Probably not

A: The Many Memes of PPCG

Alex A.Meme: Graduation Originator: Geobits Cultural Height: Always Background: Geobits, a known and "loved" user, tries to convince people that PPCG is set to graduate when in fact no such announcement has been made. An often used date is November 1st.

12:14 AM
Oops, I know about geobits thing but thought it was in July somehow...

Just a quick question, if I include "\n" in my code, does that count as one byte or two bytes?

one
wait, do you mean an actual newline or an escaped one in a string?
actual newlines are a single char

if you need to put "\n" in something like Python, it's two chars because an actual newline will confuse the parser
some languages allow a raw newline in a string though

12:15 AM
alright, yeah that clears it up
And I am guessing '\x01' is 4 bytes in python even though it is technically one byte?

how would I do a modulo 2 on an entire list in Python without a for loop? and what about Seriously?

You could do [n%2for n in x]
but that is a list comprehension

mainly interested in Seriously...

oh, Seriously is an esolang. was confused for a bit there

lol...

12:22 AM
A literal ascii 1 in a string is OK in python.

ASCII 1 is not the same as \x01 though

oh @quintopia...Come out come out wherever you are! ;)

\x31 is 1

When would you want to put \x01 where it couldn't be replaced by the actual character with ascii value of 1?

I wasn't going to use \x01 personally, was just giving an example to support my question about whether it counted as 4 bytes or 1

12:26 AM
btw,

A: The pirate world's rules of distribution

TanMathPython, 62 bytes i=input() n=[j%2for j in range(1,i+1)] n[0]=101-sum(n) print n It takes the input, creates a list pf parity of all numbers from 1 to i. Then sets the first element in i to 101-sum(n) and prints. Try it here

If you actually used the chars \, x, 0, 1 in the code it's obviously 4 bytes.

probably shortest python answer possible (at least what I can think of...)

i think python can handle raw \x01 in strings but not raw \x00

@TanMath You can put input inside the range inside the list comprehension
rather than having a variable for it
saves 8 chars

> After millennia of heated debate, mercifully, at long last, we have an answer. Most developers prefer tabs to spaces.

> Upon closer examination of the data, a trend emerges: Developers increasingly prefer spaces as they gain experience. Stack Overflow reputation correlates with a preference for spaces, too: users who have 10,000 rep or more prefer spaces to tabs at a ratio of 3 to 1.

where's that?
> After millennia of heated debate, mercifully, at long last, we have an answer
OR NAWWWWWWWW

hmm, it didn't like the question mark on the end of the URL

right below it @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ...

@Quill oh lol
sorry I'm still brain dead

12:47 AM
Too much Jon Skeet dancing has left you light headed

This is true....
But hey, I got an answer. There must be a correlation :P
> We double-checked responses vs. actual rep for users who provided account info – our users are remarkably honest people

@Quill NO!!!!

@RikerW You use tabs?
:D

Yes...

The feels:
Yeah I think it's really about cramming everything into an 8 bit latin/greek encoding, presumably so you can use greek letters for more crap in the maximally-terse code golf language while keeping actual 'file' length to a minimum. — pvg 4 mins ago

Also another of the games I was waiting on has finished

ಠ_ಠ so much ಠ_ಠ ^^

Here's my drawing from that one:

Caption: "Frankenstein's Monster Chooses a Coffin."

@SuperJedi224 Is this one of those drawing -> caption -> drawing -> caption chain games?

12:54 AM
Yes.

I used to play Doodle or Die at some point.
It was fun, but eventually a troll would always break the chain.

Yeah, that happens sometimes.

And for some reason there were a lot of Homestuck and My Little Pony fans. It was unsettling.

Drawception has an abundance of undertale fans, apparently

Why is the earth flat?

1:02 AM
?

IDK why, so I am asking you.

Wrote a quick Seriously answer:

A: The pirate world's rules of distribution

TanMathSeriously, 23 bytes ,R`2(%`M;Σ:101:-(dXR(#+ Uses the same approach as my Python answer, but I do the modulo 2 using mapping, and several times, I rotate my stack. Explanation Push input (I will call it i), push range(1,i+1), make a function take pushes 2, rotates stack, and take modulo. Then...

I didn't put a try it here link because I am not sure if the interpreter is fixed.
I would greatly appreciate golfing help.
Probably my third or fourth Seriously answer.

Quick question if anyone minds
In C, is puts(""); or printf("\n"); better for just printing a newline?
I'm inclined to use puts because it's shorter but ("") just seems wrong for some reason

putchar('\n')

WHY IS THE EARTH FLAT?????

1:05 AM
@Insane better in production or better for golfing?

@es1024 I'm not golfing, just a uni assignment. But that's not production either.

@RikerW it... isn't?

Don't be stupid, I know it is.
But why?

Question for worldbuilding, perhaps?

Because we've seen it from space

1:06 AM
@RikerW Because aliens?

Also, I need a name for my new language design still.

@feersum Why is that better than puts(""); ? Only because it's more clear what's going on or some other reason?

@Quill Oh, okay. Thanks.

It's actually the CIA trying to keep us from getting to the edge (think Truman Show)

Got it.

1:07 AM
@SuperJedi224 I can help you.

So, there are two identical Asia's?
:P

I've started drafting the docs for what I have so far

@SuperJedi224 ForceLang

@RikerW Because the Moon is made of green cheese.

1:08 AM
@Zgarb Got it.

@TanMath Maybe

or Padawan!
is it an esoteric language, because Padawan would be good then...

Kind of

since Padawans are mainly children, so mini Jedi!
see?

oh hey, you can download the SO survey data set

1:15 AM
If I want to post a challenge, but there's an old dupe that's poorly written and underspecified but has answers, what can I do?
I don't really understand what the "close old question as dupe" policy mean in practice: meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/7326/20260

pretty much just says: archive the old one, otherwise new questions that are asked by those who can't find the dupe would just be closed

archive?

close the old one as a duplicate of the new one

i guess i'll try it, but i'm not clear that there's support on posting a challenge for the purpose of closing the old one as a dupe

gtg...
bye all!

1:19 AM
bye!
@all should ping everyone :P

My conversation with clever bot:

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I was designing a bot to do that, but it's a little spammy

@Quill SuperJedi's (or ETH's, don't remember) bot does that I believe.

Not mine

uh oh
I'm confused and I just walked by a priest of my god

@quartata I have a tendency to make a bot and then it turns out somebody's already done it, and better

Clev: To be born with all the organs, tissues and cells that comprise the average human child. | Rage, rage against the dying of the light... Do not go gently into that good quiet night. Clev: Old age should burn and rave at close of day. | Yes, that is correct. Clev: I am correct, but what about you needing my advice? I don't need your advice.

> I agree. Clev: You agree because you don't understand. | That is correct. Clev: I am usually correct. | I am usually an aardvark. Clev: Aardvarks can't type! | I have opposable thumbs. Clev: What does opposable mean? #cleverbot

Clev: I agree with your agreeing. | I agree with your agreement of my agreement. Clev: I agree wih the agreement that you've agreed to. So do I, cleverbot, so do I. Clev: So just say a random sentence you think is clever. | Okay. The earth is flat. Clev: No. The earth is square. I'm all knowing. | Okay. I agree.
> Clev: Agree to what? | That you are all knowing and that the earth is square. Clev: It's useless, even if it were true, which I'll never really know other than it's in other's interest to give me a deceptive sense of self. people are annoying. #cleverbot

1:30 AM
so it turns out the SO survey CSV has no mention of the joke questions, nor the penny question

I was wondering about the penny one...

Didn't see those, explain pls?

@RikerW there's a download link on the survey page
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ probably incoming blog post about it

NVM.

1:35 AM
I just found a the smallest store I've ever seen in Nethack.
It had 10 items and 4 of them were mimics.
Effective item count = 6
What a disappointment

I'm making a language in which data moves around like the instruction pointer would in a 2D language. Data passing through an operator will have that operator applied to them. Certain operators will redirect data depending on whether it is greater than 0, etc.
Name suggestions?

@quartata Beat you, 3 items 3 small mimics.

Heh.
This one was 2 small, 1 large 1 giant

Okay.

And the items are trash

If you can clear them out they have royal jelly which is an awesome comestible

1:41 AM
Maybe ranged weapons?

Wand of fire.
Clear out a row of them.

Nice.
Currently teaching cleverbot about nethack and that the earth is flat.

@RikerW haha

I hope it's resisting your teachings
