12:22 AM
it's pretty quite in here
Probably because of Thanksgiving break.
@El'endiaStarman ...which officially starts tomorrow
@SuperJedi224 If you took vacation from work yesterday and today, that's a week-long vacation. Because of Thanksgiving break.
I get this whole week off
so that's cool
I tried CoffeeScript for the first time and was pleasantly surprised
This whole conversation I was thinking to myself "wtf are they talking about... thanksgiving... what is going on"
and only now I have remembered that I live in Canada
12:27 AM

I've done some more work on my current minecraft project.
Wait, I forgot to update the download link...

@Dennis @Maltysen Hi
@phase Thanks for the diamond
@SuperJedi224 I try
@Maltysen hello
@Maltysen Hey Malty, about the Lever Simulator, would it be alright if I used the enumerate approach to save 2 bytes off my solution?
1:15 AM
@phase Have you found the cave yet?
@SuperJedi224 Hello.
Who else remembers the web hosting feature google drive is currently actively pretending not to have?
@isaacg idk, ask @xnor
@SuperJedi224 i used to use it all the time.
@Maltysen I wrote a javascript snippet to find the hosting urls.
whoaaa cool
1:25 AM
It's really not that hard
so it still works? I thought they hid it behind some dynamic urls or something
The format's just https://googledrive.com/host/<your folder id here>
But it requires that your folder be shared
They no longer tell you any of that in the actual google drive interface though
ahhh ok. I don't think it works with actual files anymore though.
@Vɪʜᴀɴ what happened to the cool banner?
@Maltysen You can always append /<your filename here> to the end of the hosted folder url
> Can these headers not become a thing, please? Sure, they look nice, but they make your answer less searchable, and your score doesn't show up in the excerpt in search results. It also causes everyone who opens the page to load an image which doesn't add any value, and we've got some users from countries where internet access is still paid for by traffic.
1:31 AM
what about adding the header for searchability purposes above the image in size-zero font or seomthing?
> It also causes everyone who opens the page to load an image which doesn't add any value, and we've got some users from countries where internet access is still paid for by traffic.
@Maltysen I was thinking of that, but I couldn't think of a way to do it
@isaacg go for it
My user name is now Downgoat, I'm going to regret this for the rest of the month.
in Haskell, can I not pattern match with variables?
1:40 AM
@Vɪʜᴀɴ Why did you do that.
let i=1 in [x|(i,x)<-[(1,2),(3,4)]] gives a different result from [x|(1,x)<-[(1,2),(3,4)]]
@SuperJedi224 Downvote -> Downgoat. I was a goat previously for about a week
@xnor Unfortunately no, the inner i shadows the outer one.
is the approach of filtering by pattern matching doomed then?

@xnor Are you trying to implement filter?
@Zgarb more like lookup, but giving all matches
[x|(j,x)<-l,i==j]
Yeah, I can't think of a shorter way.
ok, thanks

Anyone know if we have a cyclic quadrilateral testing question?
1:59 AM
Goodbye
Is it normal to have two terminals open?
@phase Like side-by-side? I think so. I do it all the time
@phase When working on Minkolang, I typically have three command prompts open.
One is the Windows Command Prompt, and one is MinGW
One for the localhost server, one for Git for the online interpreter, one for Git for the original interpreter (because I update minkolang*.py in both places).
Oh, and during the times when I needed to do stuff on the remote server, I also had at least one PuTTY window open, and sometimes two (one for editing a file, one for restarting the Apache server).
2:18 AM
@ThomasKwa ?
I edited it just to bump it..
Do you mean a previous edit?
on windows I have 9 command prompts on global hotkey
Vihan = Downgoat now?
@quartata My intent was sarcasm.
@ThomasKwa Oh.
2:20 AM
I wasn't trying to attack you; sorry if I wasn't being lighthearted enough.
You had asked for some edits on it in the past so I didn't know if you were referring to them
Nah it's fine. I'm only doing it because it's literally 20 views away from 10k and it's bugging me
@El'endiaStarman it didn't onebox properly, try clicking on it
Also @orlp noticed Peanuts music open in one tab
+1
@quartata By the way, congrats on your imminent Famous Question
/me downviews @quartata

2:23 AM
@ThomasKwa Not there yet
It's been in limbo for a week
@quartata I'm not sure what there is to note...
@quartata peanuts?
@El'endiaStarman that window shows/hides when I type win+~
@orlp You have something with the words "Peanuts" open in a tab
I assumed it was music but
oh haha
@orlp Ahh, cool.
2:24 AM
this is going to be awkward
oh
wat
ah
@El'endiaStarman those are 9 cmd.exes btw
ctrl+1 selects the first, ctrl+2 second, etc
@orlp So it's like virtual terminals on Linux
2:26 AM
@quartata bit different system
@orlp yummy
it's more like a terminal emulator providing tabs
except the tab bar is hidden
and you only switch tabs using ctrl+N
@phase ah
just for the record
no I did not search for 'peanut butter baby'
it was on the front page of reddit :P
suuuuuure
reddit has a front page? sounds scary.
And I totally didn't try to golf my interpreter, it just kinda happened

@phase ATM all of my online interpreters are only guaranteed to work for FireFox.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Congrats, my JS isn't up to ES6 yet

It's really easy to use a language where you know how all of the commands work because you wrote them :P
Help me:
a += b
b = 0

OR

a += b
b  = 0
I think the latter
Anonymous
Both are terrible; you can get rid of the spaces to save bytes
the former because the latter is gross
2:57 AM
@Mego I'm writing beautiful source code ;)
a,b=a+b,0
@orlp JavaScript.
this.code  = code;
this.enc   = {};
this.fin   = "";
this.prec  = "";
this.comp  = "";
this.index = 0;
this.func  = [];
this.total = "";
return this;
This is beauty.
while b:
	a+=1
	b-=1
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ sure, but like, you could make it so that there's only one space on either side of each = and then it would look even better
@undergroundmonorail ಠ_ಠ that is ugly
no offense
look

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh no, it's how I code it
@phase I admire that
3:03 AM
Just look at the commits :3
I hesitate to do so XD
O_O
I admire your grit. Do you enjoy masochism? Haha.
Or maybe it's just how C works.
Anonymous
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That is most definitely (unfortunately) how C works
@Mego ... "Talk to your kids about C, before someone else does"-type scenario?
It's a feature of C that I doubt I'd ever use if I programmed in C. :P

I misinterpreted, I thought he meant a comic about the dangers of C
I see. Because English is ambiguous. le sigh
APL really needs some functions and operators.
@ThomasKwa It has both
Like "each left", "each right", "loose-binding compose", "hook", "appose", that f^-1(g(f)) thing J does
3:11 AM
@El'endiaStarman just fyi to anyone about to play this, you can fly
don't be like me and try to figure out how the walljump mechanic works
there isn't one. you can fly
Holy crap, I just won a war vs a fork bomb, I feel like such a badass.
/me awards @AlienG a medal
My heart rate is even up. That was so intense.
i think you guys would like Kaizo Trap. it's a neat little animation. also you don't need to know this to enjoy it, but it's also a puzzle where you can find hints that lead to secret endings :)
@undergroundmonorail what was the name of the last comic that was this expansive?
3:15 AM
@quintopia Click and Drag
> Back to your desks, swine! - Elon Musk
@undergroundmonorail That music is so intense.
It really is
i can't find the starship
Me either.
Did you see the Eagles?
3:20 AM
no
It's possible she was talking about the grounded X-Wing, maybe?
she would not have said in the sky
there is a spaceship but i don't know if i'd call it a "starship", it's rather small for that
and it's not very high up
uh
I think I found the spaceship. o.o
i'm just looking at the code. all that happens if you collect all the coins is "you found all the coins! great job!"
also it apparently prints messages to the console

@undergroundmonorail hrm?
@orlp there's kind of a puzzle/arg sort of thing associated with it
oh meh
there are at least 4 secret endings, i'm not sure exactly how many
i have found 3

Consider a gift exchange, where each person is assigned another random person to give a gift to
a person is not allowed to be assigned to himself
Is there an O(n) algorithm to generate the list that determines who gives gifts to who?
(allowing for multiple circles)
anyone else getting an urge to play through Limbo again
If you allow for only a single circle, you could simply shuffle the list

3:43 AM
same
Anonymous
But right now 119 is the score to beat :P
i'm interested in @NathanMerrill's question ow
@NathanMerrill if you just shuffle the list you'll get people assigned to themselves
namely, how to ensure a permutation contains no singletons
@undergroundmonorail no
@undergroundmonorail you shuffle and then assign each person to the one after them in the list
to get one big cycle
3:46 AM
@NathanMerrill I think if you generate a random permutation matrix and ensure that there are no 1's on the diagonal, you choose uniformly from the set you want
@quintopia oh i see
but that's no fun because the person who made the list knows who everyone got! :P
@undergroundmonorail that's a solved problem.
same video i was thinking of
@quintopia I don't understand
say there are 4 people, could you show an example?

3:52 AM
@undergroundmonorail Numberphile :D
ish
@NathanMerrill okay, here's a plan: Shuffle the list. insert breaks in the list from left to right in such a way that you do not insert any break immediately after another break. consider the regions between breaks as subcycles
(the problem remains how to choose breaks so that the number of cycles is random.)
i can think of no method that would choose the permutation uniformly
here's another way: attach each person to a random person. for each person who is attached to a person with indegree>1, pick one of their attachees as random and reattach to someone who has no attachees at random.
I'm not convinced that that would produce cycles with the same distribution as the naive way
(it remains to prove this has expected O(n) runtime)
There's a park. Inside the Star Destroyer!
the naive way is simply to maintain a list of "unassigned people"
3:56 AM
@El'endiaStarman :D I gave up on that after a while
and select one at random, retrying on failure
@NathanMerrill please post this as a challenge
as what kind of challenge?
fastest code?
fastest-algorithm?
