3:00 AM
And for languages like C, I might even have to tune the compiler flags to the architecture.

I hear one of the advantages of Gentoo is that building from source on the machine that will use the code is faster, but I don't actually know if compilation on different machines differs in any way other than arch.

Thanks. Do we have meta consensus? If not it would be good to post it somewhere on the meta.

A meta consensus for what?

how do I use media writer

3:04 AM
@HyperNeutrino Launch media writer, plug in usb, follow directions on screen
It'll autodetect your flash drive

Wait...
> If the author of the challenge is unable to completely describe the testing environment, then they should take sole responsibility for testing the submissions on their own machine.

@Pavel You can compile the code anywhere, but you'll have to use the appropriate compiler flags to make gcc (or whatever) take full advantage of everything your CPU has to offer. For the current machine, a simple -march=native takes care of that. The resulting executable might not work on other computers or if you switch CPUs.

(as in how do I launch it)
(what's the correct thing to download lol)

@Dennis So if you're building for your current machine, -march=native -o3 will emit the fastest executable?

-O3, not -o3.

3:06 AM
No, that will create a file called 3.
And -Ofast or even -O2 may be faster than -O3.

I think everything >= -O2 is similar.
@user202729 that implies "describe the testing environment or test the submissions", while the actual consensus is "describe and test".

In my experience, -O3 can be a lot slower than -O2, especially on my laptop.

@HyperNeutrino github.com/MartinBriza/MediaWriter/releases For your current os. On Linux, that would require flatpack. If you have Linux and don't have Flatpack, just burn the correct iso for fedora without media writer.

oh ok thanks

@Dennis So what does -Ofast do? Default to -O2 or does it try to figure out which one is best?

3:09 AM
... I don't really care about fastest code, for most of the competitive programming problems I had solved, just using the correct algorithm suffices.

   -Ofast
       Disregard strict standards compliance. -Ofast enables all -O3 optimizations.
       It also enables optimizations that are not valid for all standard-compliant
       programs. It turns on -ffast-math and the Fortran-specific -fno-protect-parens
       and -fstack-arrays.

Hello!
I just realized @Dennis you have a littler over 100 times my reputation :P

still not sure how to get mediawriter to work :/

@HyperNeutrino Well, good thing it's completely optional

hyper you need to have audio recording software so you can record your mic on thursday

3:13 AM
ok
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ probably audacity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but yeah i'm setting up fedora for the computer i'm switching to so i'll figure it out tmr or thursday

Sweet thanks

Why? PPCG podcast?

@Pavel should i use dd then or smth else?

@HyperNeutrino dd or if you want whatever graphical tool comes with mint

hm ok
there's this

3:16 AM
@user202729 bi-weekly podcast

(i've been scammed that's for windows)

@HyperNeutrino I prefer UNetbootin: unetbootin.github.io

oh that thing.. i think that's what my friend used when helping me install mint on this computer lol. thanks
does unetbootin support fedora27?

Should

it has up to 26 i think?

3:19 AM
Seriously, sudo dd if=<iso file> of=<device file> bs=4M conv=fsync, and that's it. Just triple-check that /dev/sdX is actually your flash drive.

Or that. dd scares me though.

He is Dennis not Downgoat (i think?)

my flash drive is /media/hyper_neutrino/UUI does that sound right

3:20 AM
No

There's a device file for it
It's probably, but not certaintly, /dev/sdb

No, you need to use the device file. What does mount | grep /media/hyper_neutrino/UUI say?

/dev/sdb1

Well there you go

3:21 AM
ok so yeah that makes more sense
thanks :D

Then /dev/sdb (not /dev/sdb1) is your device file.

i feel like this can end badly

it's fine dennis is here [:p]

i am confused @HyperNeutrino what are you doing again?

hm alright

3:22 AM
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Install Linux.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ That's because it can and I've nuked my hard drive on two seperate occasions by running sudo dd.

Mind that all content of the flash drive will get erased.

Is it possible to see people's past user name? Mods or normal users?

We can.

The description for dd says "Copy and convert a file". In practice, it's one of A) Render your system unusable, B) Burn an iso to a flash drive.

3:23 AM
I have been changing back to my original name

that's fine I just erased everything on it anyway when I installed Linux Mint iso onto it
now that I think of it I should've done this using Windows because I know I can use that utility thingy (forget its name)

Media Writer

Yeah why would you ever use linux to install linux when you can use windows to install linux

@Pavel It's also a great way of making backups of entire partitions or even drives, reading a part from a file (way more efficient than head+tail), or making a sparse copy of a file.

3:26 AM
well i ran the command and so far nothing bad has happened
but nothing at all is happening.?

It's happening.

uh my computer is now like 80 times slower

@Dennis There's a flag that enables a progress bar, I forgot what it is

sudo killall -USR1 dd from another terminal window will show a progress report.

why would killall show progress bar??

3:27 AM
Because SIGUSR1 isn't actually a kill signal. Most signals aren't.

huh that did nothing
(then again i opened tty1 so that might not work)

You have to check the original window.
wrong window

still did nothing.?

There may be a delay. Just wait and let it finish.

We just saw dennis do something wrong? I am going to record this moment for posterity

3:29 AM
okay

If your USB is as slow as you say it is, the entire ISO may take some time.

hm okay. about how long, or do you not really know approx how long

That depends entirely on your USB port and flash drive.

I am going to go to bed guys. TTYl o/

3:31 AM
o/
I just did the killall command with chrome as a test and chrome died :/

Probably different commands handle different flags differently.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ chat.stackexchange.com/…

probably

You can also run dd and tack bs=1024k status=progress as arguments onto the end

Well i was wrong

3:32 AM
Too late now though
You could restart I suppose

i'll probably just wait :/

@HyperNeutrino What SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2 do is entirely up to the application. If it doesn't assign a special purpose to them, it will probably die.

oh okay :/ lol

What's wrong window?

Trying to find peoples chat profiles :P

3:35 AM
well I just used ps -ef | grep dd to find the PID and killed it with USR1 and it's still not doing anything :/ lol

Oh so on Thursday I am hosting a PPCG Bi-Weekly podcast from 9 to 10PM EST,
@HyperNeutrino It may bork things but you may be able to just shut down your computer :/
No idea if it will screw up the flash-drive

uh well i entered the wrong number and /usr/bin/fish crashed
:/ i'm smart
pavel was right about dd :p

I would advise you just reboot to windows
a lot safer

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ chrome OS?

3:38 AM
@user202729 wait what?
@HyperNeutrino are you screwing with your school chromebook again??

[again...?] no
i got new computer
i'll just boot that computer into windows and do it there :p

I'd get a new computer in the next month, but I'm currently saving up for Mathematica.

Nice!
@Pavel don't you have Mathematica?

well I unplugged and replugged my USB and its name and contents are different for no reason :/

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ The license is only for one computer and I transferred it like a dozen times and they got tired of my bullshit.
Also, you don't get upgrades,
Plus, it's for educational use only, and I'd rather have a personal license.

3:42 AM
Ahhh
So much money tho
TNB has been my home for about a year now. I have loved almost every second of it. Thanks for making it a great place guys!

I was thinking about maybe making a koth which is basically that maze koth i failed to publish but without info weirdness

@DestructibleLemon what was your original name?

username or maze koth thing?

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ $235, I get two licenses and upgrades for a year.

3:46 AM
Destructible Watermelon

Confusing i see

CMP: What was your first ever SE username?

@Pavel ಠ__ಠ that is expensive

@DestructibleLemon Oh I even remember your old profile pic :p

@HyperNeutrino Cis112233 iirc or Christopher

3:46 AM
Or, $155 for one license.

@HyperNeutrino user202729.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ that name sounds familiar... is that your khanacademy name as well?

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Not really. Certaintly not when compared to geting a laptop.

(BTW default names don't count though I think you choose your name upon account creation anyway)

@HyperNeutrino yes...

3:47 AM
I've always been Pavel

How did you know that hyper?

Well, actually I was Phoenix once

because Newline

ah
Newline is art
Almost as great as PAIN-Flak

3:48 AM
Not even

that is the only way to type PAIN-Flak that i will accept
It actually hurts my eyes to read that :|

ew this new computer's keyboard bothers me

Ohh ic
@HyperNeutrino get a mechanical keyboard
tape to laptop

the power button is the rightmost button on the top row so the home button is not aligned with the numpad [all keyboards i've used so far that have numpad and home set up this way all have it lined up that way]

3:51 AM
how come no-one made a lang called REAL yet

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ i used to have mechanical keyboard but i never used it and now i want one and we already got rid of it [i think donated to thing]

:|
why would you EVER not use a mechanical keyboard

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino Mego. Don't fix what ain't broken.

:D :P

@Mego well in here it is Mego
check mate

3:52 AM
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ it was a while ago pls no hate

Anonymous
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Sure, but originally it wasn't in italics ;P

@HyperNeutrino judges in the background
@Mego my point :P

ok so for a maze koth thingy what are some good move/ply options each turn

@DestructibleLemon you haven't posted since june?!??

3:54 AM
geez man

i think i posted more recently on puzzling

I have a challenge idea; Given a (chat) user ID, scrape all chat message transcript in all rooms of chat stackexchange to determine all usernames of that user.

(of course only getting usernames from when that user became active in chat)

Is that too much work?

3:55 AM
QFT is a thing I think you'll be fine :p
I don't think I was ever active in chat as "Alex L." but I can't remember

(you cannot use an account on stack exchange)

also 7Zip is bad at counting time :p

No, I mean because there are too many rooms and too many users it would take a lot of times to run the program.

oh hm true I see.

@Dennis Hmm, that's a really good question. I hadn't thought about it. I guess in theory, I don't mind solutions not being deterministic, but something like while !neighbored: flop(random) seems really cheap
So I'm not entirely sure

3:57 AM
@HyperNeutrino Are you burning an iso by extracting it in 7zip?

That doesn't always work.

The most important conversation in TNB history ^^^

well universal USB installer is doing that

3:57 AM
Spam flag, no DVs

... in practice, random are implemented with random number generators...

@quartata Charcoal?

Anonymous
@quartata Yep, I saw it and reported it in Charcoal

@DJMcMayhem we don't scan site metas, it was manually reported

Anonymous
Wonder why Smokey didn't pick it up

3:58 AM
facepalm Why does no one delete it?

Anonymous
Oh, that's why

Ah
Should that be changed?

Uh wait...... should I delete it or flag it?

@user202729 because then the user gets away with it. it's more severe if it's autodeleted by flags

Anonymous
@user202729 Flag it. That comes with harsher consequences for the spammer.

3:58 AM
27
A: How do we handle spam posts?

HyperNeutrinoFlag, don't vote to delete If three people vote to delete it before six spam flags get through, then the post will have to be undeleted before it can continue to be flagged. If six flags get through, that post is deleted and locked by Community (and gets its content shoved into the revision hist...

ninja'd

I flagged it since i couldn't VTD :P

You know you're a nerd when you get excited that your friend learned an array programming language.

@DJMcMayhem I have advantage of user:me :p
o wait it's top for search:spam posts anyway

@Zacharý I am so proud of him :)

4:00 AM
Wasn't APL though

What is an array programming language? ...

uh...7Zip has been on 00:00:00 remaining time for like 3 minutes by now
and there are 14 errors of 37 files :/

Anonymous
@user202729 A programming language that operates on arrays

Anonymous
It's exactly what it says on the tin :P

Don't you know? The final 1 percent of loading bars is actually around 75% of the work being done

4:01 AM
@Zacharý Which one was it
@HyperNeutrino Because 7zip isn't an iso burning tool

again, universal usb installer is using 7zip

If it is java I take back everything i said that was positive about that thing

Octave or R I think. Basically the non-APL (J included) one (that's how I categorize array languages, APL-esque and others)

Anonymous

4:02 AM
@Mego nice onebox

It'll automatically downlaod the correct ISO, format your drive, and install everything.

ok so boot menu doesn't even recognize my USB as a live USB after UUI finished :/ fail
anyway waiting for windows to boot so brb in like 10 minutes (/s more like 2)

@HyperNeutrino format the USB

4:03 AM
@HyperNeutrino ... it's midnight for you already...

@user202729 please do not use delete votes on spam ever
oh sorry you were already pinged

Problem = Windows

I know, I just forgot it. At least it didn't cause any bad consequences this time.

Uhh so in the US Flu is going around that is actually killing people, be careful guys!

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino Use rufus

4:04 AM
I turn off sound notification most of the time, so no problem. Probably just a (1*).

Anonymous
@Christopher That's been happening for months. Every year, the flu kills people - old people and children that don't get vaccinated

@Mego Fedora Media Writer for Fedora

@user202729 (11:05 PM)

It's remarkably not awful as far as live usb creators go

@HyperNeutrino Must be 12, or my computer clock setting is wrong.
No it isn't.

4:06 AM
are you going by EDT

... what's that?

timezone?

@Mego this is people in hospitals dying though

... I don't know about daylight saving time.
or how it works.

@HyperNeutrino I don't think EDT is being used anywhere at the moment

4:07 AM
o ok. well it's EST rn because DST is off so I'm UTC-5 I think
EST is -4 (? idk)
@ETHproductions yeah that's why i asked

wait, maybe in South America?

Anonymous
@Pavel Oh right, Linux. Try UNetbootin

Ask dennis about SA time

@HyperNeutrino EST = UTC-5, EDT = UTC-4

Ok I don't know how it work. Every day lasts 24 hours in my timezone.

Anonymous
4:08 AM
@Christopher Yeah, one of the strains this year is especially deadly. It's a big problem because the standard flu vaccine (trivariant) doesn't include the vaccine for the deadly strain. The vaccine variant that includes that vaccine isn't as widely-available.

@user202729 well yeah globally that has to be true... a day is always 24 hours... but like DST just moves an hour from march to october to realign time during the summer

@Mego I have not gotten a flu shot in years, never needed to b/c I just don't get sick

@Mego tried already but it doesn't appear to support Fedora 27
i'm just going to go with fedoramediawriter :P

I have cold each year that usually goes for long duration, like 2+ weeks. Never remember having influenza or sth like that. However, I tend to use the term flu to denote common cold at times!

I get a cold almost every year that lasts like 4-6 weeks but it's never anything severe just kinda annoying. sometimes I forget about it

4:12 AM
I googled Tim Allen, got on the sidebar photos of Paul Allen and Tim Allen, Then it shows quotes from Tim Allen and the shows he was in, links Tim Allen's website and gives the bio for Paul Alen. GG

Google bots are bad?

@Hyperneutrino Yea, I feel ya.

Today on TNB: We go WEBMD

@DJMcMayhem Just require that the program must have a 100% chance of terminating without failure assuming cosmic rays don't screw up the hard drive or something like that
inconsistent kerning between a and l in the picture on this wiki page bother anyone else too?

@Christopher Why don't people star this and instead star...
@Christopher this?

because reddit

Jan 24 at 17:23, by HyperNeutrino
whi is my message starred and not the original message... oh well starring is just like voting on main

[i wanted to ask mego to trash it because first of all weird star and second of all typo]

It usually takes me until the end of the day to get my daily dose of stars :P
Anyways gtg bye o/

I am going to go to bed guys. TTYl o/

o/
(going to bed != leaving TNB and o/ != bye and "later" is very loosely defined) (:P)
when I close a tab in Microsoft edge and then Ctrl-T again, it preserves the omnibox content, which is bad for me because I frequently do "Ctrl-T G Space Ctrl-W" to check caps lock :p

lol

@HyperNeutrino If you want KDE on Fedora, select spins when starting FMW. You might have figured that out already.

Oh okay. No, I didn't figure that out, and it's already writing to the flash disk, so idk should I go back :/

You'll get gnome by default. You could always put KDE on later, but it'll be easier to just install the KDE spin.

4:32 AM
oh well I restarted it :/ time to wait another half hour
anyway I gtg now cya o/

@HyperNeutrino You found the KDE Plasma desktop option?
Cya

@Pavel I know @LuisMendo does
Can't really speak for anyone else though

6:33 AM
@user202729 Done.

7:10 AM
Hi everyone
My friend's website got defaced by an irate customer: ingkarsa.com (text is in Indonesian)
The thing is, he can't figure out the hacker did it, and how to fix it
Though we think it's something with CloudFlare

... do you think PPCG users are hackers?
Also the hackers probably had patched the bug already...

I don't
I do think you're better than my friend and I at backend
And that you all know more about website programming in general
So I hoped you guys might have some ideas

@Sherlock9 SQLi? XSS? Cookie theft?

There is nothing apart from the html on the site...
@user202729 I meant "being good at hacking and similar things"

Anonymous
@user202729 Right now, there isn't. Presumably there was before (because "customer")

7:17 AM
I don't know what is there before it was hacked, so I'm not sure...

Anonymous
With logs, I might be able to help, but my consultation is not free :P

Wait, I'm getting news that he's found a thing
The hacker replaced my friend's index.php with their own
The next question is how

Anonymous
> index.php

Anonymous
Found the problem :P

Store something there? We need the original website to know...

Anonymous
7:20 AM
In order to replace that page, they'd need access to the server's files. That could be done in many ways: hijacking FTP access, exploiting a vulnerability in the website to overwrite it, exploiting a vulnerability in the server software, etc.

Is the FTP port open on AWS?
Accidentally a word

I don't think it's FTP... but I don't know.

Anonymous
Dunno. It could be - it depends on how the AWS setup is done to upload files

Anonymous
Like I said - I'd need logs to know more

And compensation :D

Naturally :)

Why do we have this page?

Gautham SanthoshJohn cena is a command https://github.com/gauthamzz/John-Cena which is implemented in diffrent languages. It print /n infinite number of times. So you can't see anything. Any uncommon language implementation is appreciated.

@NewMainPosts The Sandbox is not perfect, again.
yesterday, by user202729
@NewMainPosts Seriously, you should not post "questions" that had been closed or deleted. (unless it's unclear)

Welp, the saga continues
The site was restored, but the backdoor has not been found yet

Ok then. Let me try...

And the hacker has a bot to deface the site indefinitely
So the mess remains

(Then just log what the hacker does)

And my friend is not sure how to access the admin logs
Oy vey

7:34 AM
@Sherlock9 ... what? ...

Yeah, that was my reaction

@Sherlock9 Why does it seem to load forever? (the login/signup dialog)

Didn't for me
Oh heck that's a bug
Something with the login and HTTPS
Needs to be ingkarsa.com

So http only.
How does the contact page work?

Anonymous
7:55 AM
Login is done over HTTP, so no matter what he does, he's going to be vulnerable to a wide variety of attacks (including MITM)
