That regex provided in the comic is not the shortest

@KritixiLithos there's a space before ` [TN]`
@WheatWizard it's not about length

What's it about then? alf.nu/RegexGolf is about length

4:06 PM
@WheatWizard oh gosh, people hacked the site
*hacked the scores

What the heck with the usernames

Or they are just really god

nah
I don't know regex but I know javascript bitches
they're putting JS into the comments to change their score :D

Q: Output a string 1.5 times the length of the code

subscriptCreate a code that outputs a string 1.5 times as long as the code itself. This is based off of the 'Output with the same length as the code' challenge, but I feel like this would be a bit more challenging. If rounding is needed, always round up. Standard golfing rules apply. Best code wins? This...

I'm trying to figure out how exactly they changed their scores

4:10 PM
I want to change my score to 2, no one has scored 2 yet therefor its better than 1

CMC: Write a regex that will match any string that does not contain 2 repeated letters adjacent to eachother (eg the ts in letters)

/^((.)(?!\2))+$/

/^(?!.*(.)\1)/

Oh, that's clever

User 1: gibberish. User 2: gibberish. User 1: "oh that's clever"

4:13 PM
why do you need the .* and the ^?

@Okx it is code golf now
@KritixiLithos without the .* it will only check the first two letters; without ^ it will match after the repeated letters

I suppose if you really wanted you could do /(.)\1/ and negate the result :P

K well, let's see you beat this one
CMC: Write a regex that will match only strings of a prime length

@Mayube that's quite standard

@PhiNotPi Assuming you aren't just making a joke about how regex looks like gibberish, regex is a super useful skill to have and I suggest taking some time to learn how it works :)

4:15 PM
oh ._.

@Mayube /^(?!(..+)\1+$)/

Actually it's only standard if all chars are the same. I don't know if it's possible if the chars can be different

@ETHproductions oh, right...
I think you can only do it with balancing groups if the chars can be different

fair enough then, what about one that only matches strings in alphabetical order?

@Mayube /^a?b?c?d?e?f?g?h?i?j?k?l?m?n?o?p?q?r?s?t?u?v?w?x?y?z?$/

4:17 PM
is that as short as it gets?

Regex can't do comparison :P
Other than equality, of course

equality is what regex is built to do :P

@LeakyNun s/\?/*/g

@LeakyNun wait that wouldn't work, it'd match the an in analyse, and if you enclose it in ^$, it wouldn't match something like access, I think you need asterisks not question marks

4:19 PM
I don't know if the order is strict

or y/\?/*/ if you are using sed

What is meant by "chameleon challenge"?

So like all those challenges that should have been sandbox that keep changing specs because the original was too bad?

yeah...that's why I use the sandbox even though I'm sure my challenge doesn't need it

user165474
Ah okay. Yeah I might want to more because I skip the sandbox for some challenges I'm sure are fine. Almost all of the time I judged right (in fact now that I have more experience I hardly judge incorrectly)

user165474
but I had quite a few closed and deleted challenges when I was new here which is partly why it took me so long to get "curious"

I'd advise to just to be on the safe side
btw I don't have curious yet
basically bad history

Ah okay.

user165474
Yeah pretty much same for me.

user165474
So like I just got curious yesterday and I am close to getting the silver (Inquisitive)

@EriktheOutgolfer That's incorrect. This defines what a chameleon challenge is.

Anonymous
A chameleon challenge is ostensibly about one thing, but additional requirements (cumbersome I/O format, bonuses, error handling, etc.) overshadow the core challenge

user165474
Also did you get an answer about the shower temperature yet? I also have rep on Code Review apparently

@Mego so I propagated a wrong definition.

@Lembik I'm not isaac, but DSL is pretty heavy on minimalism

@Mego but can it install the myriad libraries I will need?
I think I probably need a minimal debian or ubuntu install so I can apt-get install crazylibrary

@Lembik Yeah, IIRC it's a little more painful because the package manager isn't as good

5:26 PM
I really want to avoid that
I am only doing it because it's too painful in windows

AntiX is meant to be incredibly fast, period

@Lembik What package manager does AntiX use, you mean?

@MDXF yes

ah it's debian!

5:31 PM
It's an Intel distro meant to be as fast as possible

thanks
I am not sure what speed means here
it's all the same software

Mostly compiler optimizations

AntiX runs completely off RAM
It puts its entire operating system into RAM

@Mendeleev ah ok.. I don't believe in those :)

So like Puppy?

@Mendeleev interesting

@Mendeleev Yeah, but less trash

@Mendeleev Using something without permission is theft

Yep they're using the FontAwesome thing

which is the stolen logo?

Anonymous

oh that!
yes.. stolen :)

it's in a font that contains icons, including one for "stack overflow" - they probably didn't recognize the website

Anonymous
5:45 PM
@Mendeleev That is also theft, unless SO gave specific permission

those are some strong words

Anonymous
@Mendeleev Well, it's a black-and-white issue. Either SO gave permission, or they didn't and it's IP theft.

Someone should do a Meta SO post about this

user165474
Now they have two problems. Theft AND not knowing what SE is???

BTW that icon is just U+F16C PRIVATE USE AREA

5:49 PM
yea, that's how font awesome works
it's special fonts that make U-f16c into whatever icon you want I think

Huh it's HTML too &#61804;

@Mego The "theft" is putting in a U+F16C and linking to FontAwesome - there has to be a line somewhere

user165474
Can someone link to the website?

Scroll up

user165474
ok

user165474
5:51 PM
be right back anyway, gotta go test a tech project thingy for class

@Mendeleev SE very clearly forbids the use of their logo. The fact that FontAwesome makes it easy to use doesn't change this.

@HyperNeutrino clearlinux.org

Anonymous
The SE logo is also on FontAwesome, as well as the SO logo

Anonymous
I'm sure that will change soon, once SO/SE issues a C&D

@Dennis Right... but in this case, is it they who are using it? Remember, all that is on the website is a Private Use character. The logo is contained within a completely separate, unaffiliated site, that is linked to (probably within a meta tag)
So in this case
Who is doing the copyright infringement?
FontAwesome or Intel?

Anonymous
5:54 PM
@Mendeleev Both. FontAwesome is the primary perpetrator, because they are using the icon without permission. Intel is also using the icon without permission (via FontAwesome), so they're also at fault.

Anonymous
From the TOS:

@Mego Not necessarily. You can use the logo if your intentions are to link to SO/SE. Just not for anything else.

Anonymous
@Dennis Sure, but they're not, so they are at fault

Anonymous
> So if you were making a product, and you used a Stack Exchange name or logo in your product (or in its advertising) in such a way that would mislead someone into thinking that your product was owned by, operated by, endorsed by, or in any way part of Stack Exchange Inc., you would be violating the trademark and this would not be legal.

Anonymous
Both FontAwesome and Intel run afoul of that rule

5:58 PM
The icons are labeled StackOverflow and StackExchange by FA. They have icons for many web services, including Google, Twitter, etc. I'm not sure FA is doing anything wrong here, as there are many legitimate reasons why someone would want/need to use these logos on their website to link to those services.
But you can't use these logos for your product.
In fact, FA states that rather clearly.
> All brand icons are trademarks of their respective owners.
The use of these trademarks does not indicate endorsement of the trademark holder by Font Awesome, nor vice versa.
Brand icons should only be used to represent the company or product to which they refer.
Please do not use brand logos for any purpose except to represent that particular brand or service.

So it's Intel's fault.
I feel disappointed.

lel

> in such a way that would mislead someone into thinking that your product was owned by, operated by, endorsed by, or in any way part of Stack Exchange Inc.
how?

@MDXF You seem to be into making new languages recently

6:07 PM
@HyperNeutrino Yes, they're fun

Anonymous
@Dennis Hosting those icons without permission and providing a means for others to use those icons without attribution is copyright violation. Their notice that they don't own/endorse the trademarks doesn't make a difference here.

@Mego You know, Meta SO would probably be the best place to go in this situation...

user165474
@MDXF But what about time constraints from your promotion? :P

or even Meta SE
@HyperNeutrino Yeah...
That's why I'm making as many as possible now :P

user165474
Ah. :P

user165474
6:09 PM
If you give me the general idea I might be able to continue some languages that you don't finish :P

@Mego That would apply to all of their branding icons then, as most services use minor variations of the same trademark guidelines. IANAL though.

This is what I'm thinking of making right now

This is pretty much why I don't have a visible Twitter link on TIO. Their guidelines are insane.

But just making that ASCII art made my brain hurt
Which is, I guess, the point
The output command would add all the values on a certain face together and output them as an ASCII character
@Dennis You can't just link to Twitter?

@Dennis Why not just post your profile name (@tryitonline or something) as the link text, and then make the href the profile?

6:16 PM
@MDXF You can, but you cannot use their logo unless you print it in a specific color and accompanied by Twitter in Helvetica Neue. That's why I only have a plain text link somewhere. I'd rather use something instantly recognizable as a Twitter link.

@Dennis That's... really annoying.

No kidding.

@Dennis Why not do that as a transparent PNG?

I have no idea what you mean.

How's that? Go to Youtube and hit share, there's a square twitter button, just the logo

6:18 PM
@Dennis To avoid linking the entire Helvetica Neue font, make the link a transparent PNG with the logo and text

@HyperNeutrino Eh, I often plan answers to challenges that are still in the sandbox, especially my own. Helps to measure how hard the challenge is, and whether there are ambiguities

I don't want to use Helvetica Neue on TIO, image or other. It doesn't blend in with the rest of the design. Neither do the allowed colors.

The only real advantage it gives you is FGITW
(Unless you're like "Oh, I should implement a built-in to help with this task")

> If you are working within a monochromatic framework, download the black-and-white version of our logo, available above.

@MDXF Exactly. TIO doesn't use white, it uses #C0C0C0.

tfw you write a flawless Rubiks-cube-printing algorithm on your first try
@Dennis The Tio colors are sooo easy on the eyes

Bright colors give me headaches.

6:33 PM
Bright colors give me ... dyslexia. Oh wait, I already have that. But soft colors make it better :P

Is it intended for the run button on TIO to fade slowly to white but everything else instantly turns white when you hover over it?

Nope, that's a bug.
@MDXF I've heard that some fonts are easier/harder to read for people with dyslexia. If you don't mind me asking, are Exo and DejaVu Sans Mono working for you?
(Hard to believe I've never noticed the animation bug. Probably because I don't use the run button.)

Wait, is TIO2 stable now? Is Nexus deprecated?

@Dennis Exo is very nice due to the general shape/size/differences of the letters. DejaVu Sans Mono isn't too bad (e.g. not as bad as Consolas or Courier, not as good as Droid Sans Mono)

@Mendeleev Deprecated would suggest it's still around. Nexus has been scrubbed from the face of the web.

6:42 PM
Right...
Why?

@Dennis Has it?

That's a compatibility layer that redirects to v2. Also, you need a scheme in your URL, as <language>.tryitonline.net is HTTP-only.
@Mendeleev The permalink format wouldn't have worked for v2.

@Dennis But why not just keep Nexus going? Are all links broken now?

No, they just redirect to v2. If I have to versions, I have to make all changes twice. Pointless.

@Dennis Well <language>.tryitonline.net redirects to tio.run/nexus/<language> which in turn redirects to tio.run/#<language>

6:49 PM
@MDXF Good news about Exo 2; I really like that font. There doesn't seem to be a good alternative for DejaVu Sans Mono. Droid Sans Mono supports only a small subset of the former, not including, e.g., the glyphs in Jelly's code page.

@Dennis Oh no I wasn't suggesting a change; I'm happy how it is! I was just comparing the font to some others I've seen on the web, to give a general idea.

@Dennis Are there plans to include a more sophisticated code editor in TIO (syntax highlighting, color schemes, auto indent, brace expansion, etc.)

@MDXF Yes. That cannot be avoided, as redirects can only replace but not alter the fragment. /nexus is rewritten internally to index.html, which is still v2 but with a Nexus-style URL.

Ah, makes sense

@Mendeleev Eventually. Not exactly on top of the list though. Most "sophisticated" code editors are just awful on mobile.

6:53 PM
Is TIO mobile optimized?
I wouldn't want to code on mobile... O_o
