@mınxomaτ That's quite an embarrassing mistake, because macOS is on-topic on Retrocomputing and OS X isn't.
I meant OS X.

@wizzwizz4 That makes no sense.

Anonymous
It's technically possible to implement OOP in C, but it's very painful. You have to handle method lookup and dynamic dispatch yourself.

OS X is the older one. macOS is the newest OS from Apple.

@mınxomaτ ... Really? :-/

Yes.

4:04 PM
That's an even more embarrassing mistake.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ There's also the classic Mac OS, which is probably what he is referring to

I'm pretty sure you mean whatever came before OS X (i.e. version 10).
Dammit.

Penguins are supposed to be slower than deers!

@Mego Absolutely right. Now I feel less stupid. :-)

Oh right. It's winter.

@mınxomaτ Not when flying at ~300MPH.

But it's "summer" in the southern hemisphere where penguins live.

4:06 PM
@Mego Yes.

Anonymous
@BusinessCat I live in Texas, so it's winter every other day here

@BusinessCat Don't ruin my reasoning with facts.

Anyone interested in joining me on an esolang IDE project. I feel like its made good progress so far, and all it really needs is a coordinated effort to add more interpreters to it.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Please link so that we can have a closer look.

4:08 PM
@BusinessCat Why is "summer" in quotes?

I was originally going to just say Antarctica but changed it because penguins aren't exclusively there

Anonymous
@AdmBorkBork Because the record high in Antarctica is 15.5 C

@Mego That's pretty warm.
I'd be fine walking around in a T-shirt and shorts.
In Antarctica...

Anonymous
That was a one-off occurrence. Usually temperates are below 0 C year-round.

@wizzwizz4 Be careful with that. Without protective clothing, the penguins will nibble at your ankles.

Anonymous
4:11 PM
The record low was -93.2 C

@Mego That makes more sense.
But temperatures don't get that low now, do they?

Anonymous
Well, that measurement was taken 6.5 years ago

I think winter nights there are typically in the -70s

@wizzwizz4 isolated pockets in especially unique circumstances

Actually, winter is always night there...

4:13 PM
Now I feel cold. It's better than having a fever.
Oh, wait. I still have a fever. :-(

Anonymous
Chills are a very common symptom of a fever

@RohanJhunjhunwala I might be able to help, depending what you need exactly

I just need people to commit interpreters and add a couple lines to a file.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Linky? :pleading:

I'm looking to ensure that more languages are added, especially the more popular languages.

Anonymous
4:17 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala But why do you need others to do that?

@wizzwizz4 I had posted a link already, but I forgot to ping you. Here, github.com/rjhunjhunwala/S.I.D.E

@RohanJhunjhunwala Oh. I didn't notice that. Thanks! :-)

@Mego I don't particularly know the languages which others are interested in. Also, I was perhaps looking for people to assist me with the static code analysis (i.e syntax parsing)

Jelly, Pyth, CJam is a good start
And MATL

Static code analysis for Jelly is a bad idea
The grammar is so weird it could crash

Anonymous
4:19 PM
Well, as far as adding interpreters goes, you can do that relatively simply, so long as there are no license compatibility issues

And 05AB1E or however you spell it

(They don't need to be java interpreters anymore I fixed that just now) let me alter the readme too reflect.

@RohanJhunjhunwala It's written in Java... :-/ I wouldn't be able to test that contributions actually worked.

@wizzwizz4 really, all I need are interpreters.

@RohanJhunjhunwala There are quite a lot of those on esolangs.org.

@Lembik For a > b, a!/b! = a*(a-1)*(a-2)*...*(b)

yes

Anonymous
So that is used to reduce the denominator to k!

but there is a claim that (k^c+k-1) (k^c+k-2)...k^c = k^(ck)(k-1)!
why is that true?

Anonymous
Factor out k**c from each piece of the product

4:26 PM
I still can't believe I am sitting at 199 rep lol

@Mego For a moment, I was really confused by what word you were trying to censor that started with k and ends with c ...

that gives (1+k^{c-1} - k^{-c)) as the first term

@Lembik I think that explanation's right.

Anonymous
Err, I explained it wrong

@wizzwizz4 do you see why (k^c+k-1) (k^c+k-2)...k^c = k^(ck)(k-1)! ?

4:27 PM
Business cat, would you be willing to help out? There seem to be an inordinate number of languages which are used on ppcg and I would appreciate if anyone can allocate some time to help. Also, I don't know any languages therefore it would be incredibly hard for me to slap together some syntax highlighting (which is currently done with regex, but there is some base code (not my code) in the repo for implementing actual analysis).

@Lembik (k-1)(k-2)...k = (k^k)(k-1)!

@BusinessCat ^^

@wizzwizz4 (k-1)(k-2)...k = k (k-1)!
why do you get k^k?
oh maybe I don't know what you meant

@Lembik Because k is multiplied by itself k times.

set k = 4. what is (k-1)(k-2)...k ?
3 * 2 * 1 *4 ?

4:29 PM
@Lembik Oops.

@RohanJhunjhunwala I'm willing to help but I'm not familiar with too many languages either. I can help with some that I know though.

@Lembik I meant (k-1)(k-2)...1 = (k^k)(k-1)!

that's wrong

Although I really wonder what syntax highlighting for a language like CJam would look like...

(k-1)(k-2)...1 = (k-1)!

4:30 PM
@Lembik I can't do maths... :-/

no :)

@BusinessCat Honestly I would probably just broadly group commands between control flow, math, I/O etc. for right now I'm just trying to get some more languages represented

@Mego help :)

Ignore me for the while; I haven't had much sleep (~2h).

@wizzwizz4 sleep!!

4:32 PM
@Lembik I can't. It's daytime, and I don't feel sleepy.
I feel tired, but not sleepy.

you could spend the day reading all Trump's old tweets... :)

@Lembik That would make me sad, not sleepy.

It really wasn't a serious suggestion!

Do you happen to know what C library I need to get atoi?
I know I shouldn't use it, but I need undefined behaviour on invalid input, because otherwise I'll have to handle it and I don't want to do that.

4:35 PM
@Lembik Of course. #include <stdlib.h>.
I mistook stdio.h for stdlib.h, so thought I'd already included it. :-/

strtol() is what you meant to use

Anonymous
@Lembik Either there's an error, or I'm too sleepy to work out why it works. Regardless, the leading term in the numerator is k**(ck), so it's O(k**(ck)/k!)

@Lembik I know, but that requires extra work.
I'm hacking together something that works, then fixing it later.

@Mego ok thanks. I think it's an error
@Mego I think the answer might be $\frac{k^{ck-1}e^k}{\sqrt{2 \pi k}}$ just by copying from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… and crossing my fingers

I should probably turn ChatJax back on

Quick question: Is there a f(f(n))=n challenge on PPCG? I think I've seen at least one..?

@StewieGriffin lambda x:-x. It's a pretty boring challenge.

@Mego Where is it? I can't seem to find it on StackApps (outside of the SOUP patch).

I didn't mean to write that exact challenge... I wondered if there was such a challenge... @wizzwizz4

4:52 PM
@StewieGriffin Oh, ok. :-/

I was thinking about something slightly more complex..

@EriktheOutgolfer why does this onebox

@Mego That's a big one-box.

@wizzwizz4 I didn't expect it to onebox :P

4:53 PM
@Mego If in doubt, it will one-box.

Things onebox no matter how big they are.

@ChristopherPeart Nope. Keypresses aren't bytes, and you're adding an additional requirement not stated in the rules.

@ChristopherPeart Thanks! :)

4:55 PM
Wow, ChatJax actually works, although I'm afraid it might make chat lag a bit.

how fast do you normally chat? :)

Not so much, but that isn't the only symptom of lagging.

Today I got two upvotes on an answer that didn't get any since I posted it last summer
Weird

I don't understand investment anymore. Snap committed over $3B to AWS+Google over the next 5y. While SpaceX's launch vehicle only comes in at $1.2B....

@Mego The requirement is needed to use the "language" Darn
I was hoping it would work

4:57 PM
Gah, I'm having the worst dilemma of choosing the font for my terminal

@Mego Those look like valid bytes to me. 'A'-32, 'C'-32, 'V'-32.
@KritixiLithos Pick a random one each new session.
Make sure you've got Wingdings installed.

Anonymous
@wizzwizz4 I don't know what you're trying to say.

@Mego ^A, ^C and ^V are bytes. Vim submissions use them.

@ChristopherPeart That doesn't even remotely satisfy the challenge output.

Anonymous
@wizzwizz4 Sure, because you can represent them in script files with control characters. You can't do the same in Windows. The closest would be a Batch script using xcopy.

Anonymous
4:59 PM
But like the good Admiral said, it doesn't satisfy the challenge requirements.

@wizzwizz4 You see, I judge a font by how it displays 0g";. None of the fonts (out the the 10-ish I can choose from) fit my needs. Now I don't know what to choose

@KritixiLithos Mix and match glyphs if you want.

@AdmBorkBork it does. Is displays a copy box. You need a 1gb file tho

It'll look a bit ugly, but you could get used to it.
@ChristopherPeart The challenge output doesn't specify a copy box though.
It specifies STDOUT.

@AdmBorkBork I need PS help. I want to spawn a new powershell from a batch file where for that session, a path is added to ... the path. I currently use PowerShell -NoExit -Command "$env:Path += '%~dp0x86\bin'", but it doesn't work. PS is opened, but can't find the programs from that path.

@wizzwizz4 Do you by any chance know how to edit an otf?

@KritixiLithos FontForge?

@AdmBorkBork Example (gcc.exe being in that path):

PS C:\Users\turbo\Google Drive\Lenovo\ThreadCC-master> gcc

I don't have any otf files, so I can't test.

@EriktheOutgolfer Windows Update's still there; now you can't control it.

@wat I think that while Windows Update does indeed provide important updates, it has some very negative aspects, the worst of all being forcing you to install updates that might crash your system.

5:40 PM
@mınxomaτ That's nowhere near what you used to be able to do.
You now no longer have control over the software running on your own computer.
