@DJMcMayhem holy shit vimgolf.com did you know about this
uh
it just went down wtf

I did, but the client is stupid confusing

SE doesn't have a hug of death that's only reddit o_O but it might apparently
@DJMcMayhem ah ok

@Riker Vim challenge (or CMC if you prefer) Swap every word of input

o_O
will try

12:09 AM
So "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dogs" --> "quick The fox brown over jumps lazy the dogs"

ah

@DJMcMayhem good (if simple) challenge, sounds like yoda

Ty
Is it main-worthy?

welcome your
@DJMcMayhem Sure, though it could be a dupe

"Do or do not there is no try" --> "or Do not do is there try no"

12:14 AM
Washington vs Washington here...

hey
@MistahFiggins hello

The J programming language is very confusing to me
It seems like a language that would be nice to golf in
But I don't get how J functions work because I am used to having functions taking arguments, rather than acting like Python's map
It really seems like a write-only language

Ugh, this is stupidly hard in V. It should be like 6 bytes but the end of the sentence keeps getting screwed up

@DJMcMayhem ?

@Riker Vim challenge (or CMC if you prefer) Swap every word of input

Ninjad

@Riker Thx
@LuisMendo Greetings, fellow golfer

@ckjbgames Hello!
Nice avatar! Except for the glasses (or whatever they are) :-P

@DJMcMayhem hm I've got it but spaces borked :(

@LuisMendo They are glasses

12:22 AM
@Riker What is it? Maybe I can help

dawbP to swap a word with the previous

@DJMcMayhem @Riker What is the challenge

@Riker Vim challenge (or CMC if you prefer) Swap every word of input

@Rodolvertice Hello, fellow programmer

@Riker or dWWP to swap with the next

12:23 AM
oh cool

@Riker I don't know how to program in V or Vim, so I'm no help here, I guess

uh doesn't work @DJMcMayhem

You can do it in another language

@Riker try dW2WP

still loses the space :/

12:24 AM
@Riker Really? I'm pretty sure it does

but that works better
@DJMcMayhem no 1 sec
oh it does, but not if the words share an ending

@Riker maybe then do df wp

@Downgoat Hello

hm @Downgoat's doesn't either if they share an ending looks like
try it on "potato potao"
it makes "potapotatoo"
aka "pota" + "potato" + "o"

@Riker I see the problem. It works fine once, but when you repeat it you end on a space

12:26 AM
@Riker ok try hdwWp

still no spaces
but htf are these working o-o
@DJMcMayhem vim is majik confirmed

How can I make a function in J take arguments
Sorry I just downloaded J today

@ckjbgames @ConorO'Brien would probably know

@DJMcMayhem Thank you
@DJMcMayhem Des @ConorO'Brien golf in J or something

no but he knows it

12:33 AM
@Riker K

> Des
:P
@Riker I'm sorry for picking such a hard challenge, lol. I can't even figure it out
I think you should just do :s/\v(\S+) (\S+)/\2\1/g

lol

@ckjbgames Hello

Any cool challenges recently

12:44 AM
@ckjbgames I do actually
what are you trying to do?

> 4 mins ago, by Riker
> > 10 mins ago, by DJMcMayhem
> > > @Riker Vim challenge (or CMC if you prefer) Swap every word of input

@ConorO'Brien Trying to figure out how to pass an argument to a function in J

@ATaco ye wot?

@ConorO'Brien Nothing specific, really

12:45 AM
ah
I see context

(Sorry for the ping spam)

it's ok idc

@ckjbgames Call it as f y or x f y.
functions are either monadic or dyadic (one-arg or two-args)

@ConorO'Brien I get that
@ConorO'Brien I am trying to reference a function's arguments within that function
@ConorO'Brien It's pretty easy with Python lambdas and plain old functions
Sorry for the ping spam

it's fine. do you know what forks and hooks are?

12:48 AM
@ConorO'Brien No, I just started checking out J

@ConorO'Brien I already know some Python, PHP, & bash, but I just want a language that I can actually compete with in
@ConorO'Brien In other words, J
@ConorO'Brien Or should I choose another language with more familiar syntax to golf in

you might wish to do that
basically, when you put a sequence of functions (more often called "verbs") together, you get a "train". If there are 3 verbs in this train, it's called a "fork", and if there are 2, it's called a "hook". Each train is also a verb.
(f g h) y      is equivalent to      (f y) g (h y)
x (f g h) y    is equivalent to      (x f y) g (x h y)

@ConorO'Brien K
@ConorO'Brien I guess that J terminology just puts me off because I am very unfamiliar with it

Golfed, 27 Byytes. ~"(%S*)%s(%S*)%s*""%2 %1 "R

12:51 AM
yes, it's quite a different language than ordinary

@ConorO'Brien I prefer more conventional programming terminology
@ConorO'Brien Thx
@ConorO'Brien Already tried reading that Maybe I read it too fast

@ckjbgames I would suggest learning a procedural langauge such as pyth. it's quite close to regular programming
For example, 3 + 4 * 5 in conventional programming is just +3*4 5 in pyth (operators go before operands)

It's ~534+* in RProgN

wrong precedence >_>
~345*+

Both do the same thing
Wait
Nevermibd
Cursed phone keyboard

12:58 AM
@ConorO'Brien Sounds nice, especially because Pyth is very similar to Python. I'm still thinking about a stack-based golfing language, too, like GolfScript

@ckjbgames if you want to go with a stack-based golfing language, I would suggest MATL or CJam

@ConorO'Brien Okay

Or RProgN. 😜

@ConorO'Brien I have no experience with MATLAB, so I think I will try Pyth

I finally wrote a tutorial thing!

1:00 AM
@ConorO'Brien Any Python tutorials you know of?

@ckjbgames ayyyyy
yay

@ConorO'Brien Oops I mean Pyth

@Maltysen your welcome, I think I converted him

pretty out of date

1:01 AM
Yeah, pyth is pretty awesome

but will get you to understand the basic gist of the language

@Maltysen Okay, still helps

I should learn it, or literally any golflang I've not personally created

use the docs on the online interpreter when you actually need specfics

@Maltysen Ok

1:02 AM
@ATaco that's basically me. I know no golfing language better than my own

But man, can i write my own.

you know, I've been meaning to write a second golfing language

stacked is a great concept, just verbose

it's not a golfing language either >_>

@ConorO'Brien +1 for MATL

1:04 AM
@DJMcMayhem ya! also nice italics

Which of the 3 languages I know is the tersest: Python, PHP, or bash?
Just wanna know

python is useful-est

probably Python or bash, depending on the task

@ConorO'Brien Which tasks are suited for which language?

Well, Bash is great at anything related to filesystems, for one.

1:08 AM
python is better suited for most tasks whilst bash excels at data processing (like, sorting and replacement) and filesystems as Pavel said

PHP is good for nothing unless you need to set up a web server for a code-golf challenege

@Pavel Of course :)

@ConorO'Brien Really? I use Python for most everything including data processing.

sed is epic for string things, that's why he said data processing

@SeeOneRhino well, I'm saying that bash tends to be shorter/terser than python for data processing

1:09 AM
sorting and replacing

@ConorO'Brien Agreed

@ConorO'Brien Ok. I haven't really used bash for data processing anyway.

Python has bad regex support, so bash is better if you need regexes

Why not use perl?

1:10 AM
because it's perl

he limited it to 3 langs: PHP bash and python

@SeeOneRhino I don't know Perl and I am focusing on learning the three languages I have chosen to focus on.

@ckjbgames What do you use PHP for? Annoying people?

@SeeOneRhino I have seen people answer in PHP
@SeeOneRhino I mainly know it because I have a web server

1:12 AM
Ok
I just always see SO/PPCG comments about PHPsadness and the evilness of PHP.

@ckjbgames btw if you have any questions on Pyth feel free to ping me

@ConorO'Brien :D thank you. I like them too

1:34 AM
Great joke
"I was once messaging someone and they got mad. They sent me "
@$&$@*y(*nf*h#(&%&&)(%IFJ#R()jFJKDJ(#*#$Jjidjfoje*#($*09348jJ(#U(MN#J$(jf903J)(%J" and I said: "When did you learn to code golf?"
Is it bad if I ate a huge dinner an hour ago and just ate a Klondike bar
And want another dinner?

@ChristopherPeart that looks like a pretty esoteric language >_>

@ConorO'Brien How do you know it isn't? ^.^

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

El'endia StarmanWhat is the smallest impossible sum? code-golf Meta note: I would be somewhat surprised if this is not a duplicate. Consider the game of American football. The most common types of scores are touchdowns (with the extra point), which score 7 points, and field goals, which score 3 points. The on...

@ChristopherPeart they need to remove some of those redundant parens
if they want to golf

They aren't reduntend
Redundant
They are special chars
It simulates the universe
It is actually one byte
Just a super long char

1:52 AM
what messaging system do you use that supports a char like that?
also it looks like it is definitely more than one char in chat

Uhhh
The chat is morse code
MCOL
Morse code over lan
This chat doesn't support that char

but morse code does not even support all of ascii?

This is MCOL 2.0

Java doesn't allow assignments inside if statements ;-;

That char is shown by .---....-..-..-.-.-..-.-.-...----.-.-.-..-.-.--.-.---.-....--...-.--....--.-.-.-.-...-...-.‌.-.-....--...-..--.--....-...------....-.-.-.-.--.-..-...-...---...---.
RIP

1:55 AM
Question: are you pro-save button or pro-auto save?

both

Games or editors?

not game, ios app

An app, definitly autosave

1:55 AM
Auto save
On editors i like auto backup and save butten

In an app, I need to be able to drop what I'm doing at a moments notice

button
Yeah'

ok... viewWillDisapear it is...

What kinda app you writing?

productivity app
basically glorified calender
screenshot
another question: Should I color code items?

1:58 AM
Yes
Make em pop
Looks god downgoat
Well imma go work on a car
Installing new horns

> BioSteel was a trademark name for a high-strength fiber-based material made of the recombinant spider silk-like protein extracted from the milk of transgenic goats
goats just got 100x times cooler didn't know that was possible

my koth is nearing completion
@Downgoat they were genetically modified goats

ik

specifically engineered to produce bio steel

we learned about them in science class today

why did they use goats anyway?
is it because goats are cool?

2:58 AM
yes
goat are best animal :3

are you at all hyped for my koth?
@Downgoat?

@DestructibleWatermelon Ye
I think I'll participate, it will probably be pretty bad tho

for reference, this was one of those stupid spam things that I somehow got subscribed to
think it was a friend trolling me

3:38 AM
I recall someone asked TNB to test their mail server for them, and I signed them up for Groupon.

lol

@Pavel lol that was @wat

Dec 15 '16 at 4:02, by Pavel
@wat I just signed you up on Groupon

XD I need to do that everytime friend gets new email
Google calls "biotechnology": "the exploitation of biological processes" >_>

is this why they require email confirmation on things?
@Downgoat does that make bottled water biotechnology?

3:45 AM
yes

@DestructibleWatermelon That is excatly the reason.

it is also the exploitation of snow

I think it isn't really exploiting anything biological

or those paid toilets that apparently exist

Plastics are completely artificial, and the water, despite traveling through biotics, does not affect those biotics when bottled.
(IDK if biotics is the correct word there)

3:46 AM
@Pavel they basically take water that cost a miniscule amount, put it in a bottle, and resell it at higher prices in other places
especially when the bottled water actually does come from tap water
> excatly
sorry I edited that too many times lol

crud

I don't get it

didn't you click the link?

I did

@Pavel library of babel contains all texts that have been written, are being written, will ever be written, or will never be written. it contains all truths and all lies. it is unimaginably immense, no one will ever be able to find any clear english text, let alone the secrets of quantum mechanics or the access codes to the universe simulation (if that's a theory you subscribe to)
basically it's an RNG with a certain algorighm, a limited length, and a user specified seed.

Cool

Why did you onebox the image immediately after posting a link to it?

wat
so there would be a onebox

Anonymous
Oneboxes force images to be loaded for users, which can drain data for large images, which is not good for users with data caps or pay-per-byte plans. Please use them sparingly.

wat
This is a small image (800x450)

@wat whoa that looks pretty
is that for gnome?

wat
4:20 AM
@Maltysen Windows 10
as evidenced by the windows logo in bottom left corner

And the text "Groove"

@wat That's awesome. If there's one thing MS can do, it's making things look beautiful.

@Pavel I really like this new theme
Arc is awesome as well, but still

Oh yeah.
I wonder how long until someone creates a version for gnome?

wat
@Pavel No idea

4:24 AM
I still have Windows on my Desktop, that's my gaming computer.

Wait, the new version is out?

No that's a preview

@MatthewRoh no it is a leaked screenshot

@wat Sure, but you have a habit of posting a lot of oneboxed images. They add up.

@Mego ok, I'll keep that in mind

ehm

4:28 AM
@Pavel I like Paint 3D

Sure, but why kill MSPaint in the process?
Those two programs are not mutually exclusive.

wait
they killed it?
If then its bcz of the new sketchbook I guess

On the Insider Preview version, we don't have Paint Classic
I have submitted that as a bug report

oh
I think its more of an intended one

Intended bug
'cause it's clearly a regression

4:31 AM

Q: Tips for golfing in Underload

Challenger5Underload is a stack-based semi-functional tarpit created by ais523. I've recently been trying to golf in it, as it's a surprisingly elegant language. What tips do you have for golfing in Underload? (One tip per answer)
