4:00 PM
Oooooh
@El'endiaStarman I can see them from incognito

Hmm. Turns out that I do still have duplicates. 4863, to be exact, which still doesn't explain the whole discrepancy (10,949).
@DJMcMayhem Oh, huh. What about in the transcript?

@El'endiaStarman multi-line messages

Not sure, gimme a minute

@El'endiaStarman Maybe some subset of oneboxes don't count as "messages" the way the chat info page counts it?

@El'endiaStarman I can't see them in the transcript

4:07 PM
@DJMcMayhem Okay, so I got that right. And the parser only looks at the public transcript, so there are no deleted messages in the database.

Adding up the most common external oneboxes (youtube, wiki, xkcd) alone is about 3700, so I imagine all the external ones together come pretty close to that 3883 number (since there are a lot with just a few).
But that would be a silly way to count.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if 3883 is the right number, though. I was just guessing that messages by users with id < 0 weren't counted, but I don't know that for sure.

#ifdef QNETHACK
  #undef yn
  #include <math.h>
  #undef yn
  #define yn(query) yn_function(query, ynchars, 'n')
#endif
#justcthings

Yeah, I'm not sure how else to get anywhere near 10k though.

My poor pound key is going to be worn down into nothingness at this rate

4:12 PM
Isn't yn a gcc intrinsic? I wonder how trying to undefine that works...

The problem is that Nethack has its own yn and math.h imports something that also has it

Gross

So I undefine that first, include, then undefine math's yn and redefine Nethack's
It's even more fun when you try to compile NH for Qt.

Is the first undef necessary?

I think so, yes.

4:14 PM
So, in QNETHACK, when is QNETHACK not defined?

?

> #ifdef QNETHACK

@Geobits Well, I definitely have 4863 duplicates, which I will work on deleting momentarily. That means that the target number is about 6000. That still has to be explained away.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Haha, nutrition system works perfectly except that I forgot that newhp is called when the game first starts (before I set up the nutrition defaults). I started with 1 hp...

Is it c++, or just straight C? @quartata

4:16 PM
@feersum Yeah. That's so that I can leave off -DQNETHACK and have it compile into a normal Nethack binary
@DJMcMayhem Straight C, sadly.

So you're if-defing every change? No wonder your key is worn out.

Yeah.

;_;

Why would you bother with that?

Because worst case scenario I can simply grep for anything beginning with #ifdef QNETHACK and take it all out
Or I can compile without it to see if a bug is my fault or not.

4:19 PM
Seems a lot easier to have another copy of the code.

I do.
But I got sick of copying files over about 2 days ago.
I could also use git like an intelligent person but that's hard

Well medieval source countrol goes well with the dungeon theme I guess :P

I mean I am using git currently. Just not very smartly
@feersum It fits well with the "nothing works" theme too.
I still like it because it makes it easy to spot what's mine

@quartata maybe you just need to git gud

4:27 PM
git is gud

I really don't want to do this

It is certainly a hard and painful decision to take a long break from all of you. I certainly am not ready for such a change, but I know that it is necessary.

Anyway, I’m taking a long break in order to prepare for an important examination.

Some say that the internet is a virtual world. I can’t disagree more. You guys are all real to me. This site and this room has brought all of you, you from different cultures, together in one place.
3
Maybe other people will never understand why we strive towards a stupid goal -- reducing the byte-count of a program. I’ve never told anyone that in my free time I reduce my byte-count as much as possible, because nobody would understand, but it is fine. I don’t even remember how I got into here and how I met all of you. You all are certainly the best that happened to me in my life.

In no particular order:
@Sherlock9 Thanks for continually allowing me to out-golf your solutions and then making a comeback haha, hope you’ll have developed a language as well as 20k rep when I come back.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Thanks for creating such an interesting language and letting me be the co-developer of it, hope you’ll create more interesting languages in the future.

@DJMcMayhem Thanks for creating such an interesting language. I really enjoyed golfing in brain-flak for Sylvester’s sequence (q91154).
@Mego Thanks for creating such an interesting language. Perhaps when I come back, you’ll already have developed Literally, Obviously, Apparently, etc … haha.

@Dennis Thanks for creating TAC. You’ve invented the idea of chain patterns. You certainly are quite intelligent, as can be seen by your creating novel algorithms for many questions and out-golfing so many people to the extent that a meme is created. Thanks for your golfing suggestions.
@ConorO'Brien Thanks for creating many interesting languages. I certainly liked Yup.

@El'endiaStarman Thanks for your best wishes that got to the starboard. I will work hard.

@Downgoat Thanks for dealing with my multitude of questions about your language. Maybe you’ll have released Cheddar v2 when I come back haha.

@Doorknob Thanks for discussing linguistics with me. There’s not much people like you who have a passion towards linguistics.
@Fatalize Thanks for introducing me to declarative programming languages. They’re beautiful in their own way. Thanks for dealing with my complaints about missing features haha. Hope the command list will be filled when I come back. See you tomorrow… for today shall be long.
@MartinEnder Thanks for telling me that it is considered rude to talk in a language which not all people in the room understand, although I still disagree with this. Thanks for creating Retina which allowed me to learn more about RegEx. They say I’d have two problems if I use RegEx, now I have zero.

@Adnan Thanks for creating OASIS. It is a brand new type of language. I only saw you today since a long time, and I am leaving you today… Hope you can read your own doc well haha.
Other people not listed: not that I have forgotten you, just that I don’t know what to say for the moment… so just allow me to leave you in silence.

I thank you all of you again for all of your good wishes. I will not fail you all.

I will miss you all, and above all, I will be back, I promise.

I will be back, if when I am back this site is still open and this room is still open.

I hope to see all of you again when I’m back…

Kenny Lau (AKA Leaky Nun)

@LeakyNun: Thanks to you for being such a valuable contributor to our community. We look forward to your return. :)

Too bad I can't star the whole thing. Farewell and I hope your studies go well!

@Doorknob: > The doorknob suddenly drops from the ceiling! You are almost hit by the falling doorknob! The doorknob butts! You're covered in frost! beautiful

Hmm, should we wish Leaky good luck or bad luck with the resolution to stay off PPCG :)

Hope your exam goes well! Don't expect the new design to have been done by the time you get back though...

good luck for the exams

@BusinessCat Oh, it should be. November's the target for that.

@leakyNun

Thank you for all of your contributions to this site! Even though we've given you a lot of crap for the alphabet challenges, you have contributed more to this site in the last year than nearly anyone. It's almost scary how quickly you passed me up in rep, and became a way better golfer than me. It also boggles my mind how you can outgolf so many different people, in *so many* different languages. You pick up languages faster than anyone I've ever met, and are definitely the most competitive person I have ever met. I've enjoyed talking with you about linguistics, and the site, and

@MartinEnder i don't feel comfortable at all yet with the flow control commands, but it was nice to get just a little taste of the agony :)
i like how m + ender forms an english word

Who requested to add Hexagony?

oh yeah i was thinking to ask that too
whether you asked shinh, or he asked you, or neither

Just deleted duplicate rows from the TNBDE database. There were 4863, and 4857 got deleted, but now there are no duplicates. There must've been a few triplicated rows.

I wonder if the time-break for transcripts has some overlap.
I didn't think it did, but that many duplicates seems odd.

4:45 PM
It's almost certainly from when I parsed a day or two of the transcript more than once.
Okay, row count is down to 936079 and the info page says 929765, which is a difference of 6314. Some of that will be because the past hour has not been parsed, so look for something around 5800-6000.

@DJMcMayhem are you leaving ?

@Optimizer Not for a long time. ;) Kenny is

@TùxCräftîñg Unefunge-98 can't be TC, Funge-98 is what is TC.

I do like error handling in PowerShell -- outside of the usual try/catch syntax, you also have things like if(!$?){...}. Yes, even though it looks like frustrated swearing, it's a legitimate if clause meaning if the previous operation had a non-zero return status. :D

Just a quick question : should i buy ti34 plus ce ? I'll do nothing more everyday mathematical calculation for school & programming as entertainment . Is it better to buy another model or forget buying a programmable calculator fornow?

@Geobits: These are the message counts of users with uid < 0. I see no way to make any of these add up to ~6000, so that can't be it.

ti83+ se is good

Really ?

5:18 PM
anyway ti83+ is near the same thing as a ti84

Should i buy oldish normal z80 ones or ez80 is fine

z80 is fine

@TùxCräftîñg ti 84 never existed . The model before that was TI83

Silly C question: Are &foo->bar and &(foo->bar) equivalent?

since unary operators have higher precedence, no

The answer is yes though...

& is lower precedence than -> if I'm not misatken.

-> is in the group of highest precedence operators

Yeah, thats true. Operator precendence table
I probably should have started there. <_<

i have a ti-83+ but i lost the connection cable ;_;
and a rom is read-only

I mean z80's rom

@GLASSIC You need the TI-Connect software + a cable

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei write it in C#

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei rewrite it in ruby

Write it in Java

@quartata Hmm .. Does it have a menu or sth like to run programs that i load into

5:42 PM
@quartata The cable for TI 84 was just a USB cable with a mini/micro USB end.

So i have no problems with cable

@El'endiaStarman I know, I'm staring right at it :P
I don't know about TI 83 though.

@quartata Ah-haha. :P

Hey @Downgoat, how did you make that nice checklist for Cheddar?
I'm going to put what little code I have for qNetHack on GH soon and I'd like to have one of those

TI 83 had something more like an audio jack for connecting calculators, I think. I'm not sure the USB standard was widespread enough by that time.

@El'endiaStarman It'd be even cooler if it only showed one per page (with prev/next buttons). Oh, and maybe a "random comic" button too.

It doesn't even work
I was tempted to delete it just now but I went ahead in fixed it

@Geobits What if it had a kind of parallel section for something else?

What if indeed...

@Geobits Oh, and maybe some extra JS for cool interactive comics

6:18 PM
why did the number of commiters drop by like 45?

@TùxCräftîñg Yeah but I don't think that's actually a good idea.

???
@Maltysen you are probably in the definition tab

It's the broadest scope I can imagine.

What if it's a duplicate of Worldbuilding

@quartata As soon as I get home.

6:18 PM
Even broader than Lifehacks...
or Parenting

@Geobits I agree that the level of rules will have to be greater than even this site, but I still think it might be fun
@TùxCräftîñg derp

and idk how SE can handle VTC as unclear for sites in beta

I suspect it will not be very fun due to very low average quality.

Oh I have no doubt it would be fun (at least some of them). But it's an even weirder fit for SE in general than we are here.

it ~the same thing as WB

6:21 PM
Well, maybe. But it's definitely not the same as what worldbuilding was intended to be by its original proposal.
WB now doesn't really fit SE at all either imo.

What if? Seems like duplicate of world building.

They still get some good questions, but it seems like the scope slips more every day.

Q: What if Worldbuilding banned What If questions?

ArtOfCodeWorldbuilding, it seems, is not a What If site. So let's start making that happen. If we don't want these questions around, then I think the first step is with close reasons. We currently have an Idea Generation close reason, which there are mixed opinions about. Personally, I think it's actual...

Q: How is this different from WorldBuilding?

QuillProposal: What if(hypotheticals) WorldBuilding deals with these type of questions, how will this site differentiate from WorldBuilding?

@TùxCräftîñg To be fair, that's a good point. Worldbuilding prefer "Is this realistic?" to "What would happen?"

> what if questions are too broad and out of scope for WB. We constantly close them down as quickly as possible.

6:25 PM
Community service and/or death sentence

Typical stack exchange. Use the right words and you can ask anything you want.

Haha, so true.
And get answered by a site mod.
It's just a bit ironic to me that the site that seems to deal with these questions the most thinks they're too broad. So what do we do with it? Create an entire new site for it, where they'll still be just as broad.

@Geobits I guess the hope is that if they are the only things there, more energy can be expended to keeping them under control and focused

Maybe. I haven't checked in on LifeHacks in a while, but they had a similar issue (what even is or isn't a lifehack?). I don't really know a good way to resolve that, but maybe they have by now.

6:30 PM
Well, it's going to be a beta site. If it doesn't work, it will be closed. If it does work, then there's no problem.

To be completely honest, I'll be mildly surprised if it actually launches.

PPCG was experimental and it worked

Yeah, same here (even though I committed)

PPCG is an awesome idea though, not a dumb one.

It's experimental (like PPCG), and it's also very broad (unlike PPCG).
Point being, you can't point to one quality and say "It shares this quality with PPCG; therefore, it will work."

Of course not
