12:00 AM
oh boy that'll be sloooowww haha :P

I hate Pride and Prejudice

@quartata I suspect that the moment you try dial-up internet again, you'll scream and hide, and go back to your regular internet

@Cyoce .. and zombies

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ nah; zombies are great. it's just the horrible book that I hate

I still remember getting excited about download speeds exceeding about 4-5 KB/sec

12:04 AM
@Phrancis wait those exist? No wonder my internet is so slow

Now download speeds in excess of 1MB/sec are not uncommon...

For a computer lang, there are three 2-char arrows: ->, =>, ~>. Any ideas for others that'd work?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ ?

e.g. typing arrows

12:10 AM
BTW, why three?

I'm looking for a fourth to use because the former three are in use

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Use for what?

Um
why not just a keyword?
operator foo -> (String:a, String:b) {/*stuff*/}

I want an arrow
>:|

12:12 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ BTW, is this cheddar?

I don't think the first three are needed
just use -> for functions/lambdas
~> for operators

Y U MUST USE ARROWZ

@Phrancis Because every language uses them?

And?

12:16 AM
Why not?

No reason
Why not just use one of the arrow notations that already exist?

Downgoat uses ~> for a niladic lambda, -> is a lambda, and => is an expression lambda iirc

If you need originality, maybe _> would be OK
Or *>

My only idea was +> because it looks uniform. _> could work, but it's kinda ugly

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ +>, |>, )>, ]>, }>, #>...

12:18 AM
@El'endiaStarman oo |> looks nie

I think it's already used in F#?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yeah, that's pointless

@MarsUltor I don't do the decision making :(
@Downgoat Your use of arrows is a tad extravagant.

@Downgoat pls don't use three different arrows for lambdas
Maybe -o>?

@El'endiaStarman What about :>, ::>, @>, !>, %>?

12:20 AM
You could also, I dunno, just use a normal keyword instead of cryptic symbols

@Cyoce he did put a ...
@Phrancis You obviously don't know I like J.

@Phrancis That's what I suggested

@Cyoce Oh yeah, forgot :>. The others are fairly asymmetric though.

-o> looks nice

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

12:21 AM
What about double arrows? E.g. -->, ==>, ~~>

you killed his arm D:

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ You bastard!

Y U NO DISPLAY BACKSLASH

@Cyoce I didn't do it :(
@Phrancis escape it

Ah there

12:24 AM
ESCAPE THE PRISON BACKSLASH

Maybe you can use \> arrow to give those regex people some nightmares
Now they'll have 2 3 problems

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ now that's an asymmetrical arrow

@Cyoce yah >:D

lol

12:26 AM
Most asymetric arrow I could find: `>. That's quite assymetric.

Diacritic stacking can make it more asymmetric

Language aesthetics
If coding was meant to look good maybe more people would do it

once I had an idea (albeit a bad one) with someone else that an over-hanging diacratic meant "increment" and a under-hanging diacratic meant "decrement". In fact, I'm going to make that >:D
and invade CR with it

GTFO

Hi @NewMainPosts

12:31 AM
@Phrancis In some languages, it is

I say Python is about as aesthetic as a language gets, you type pseudo-code and it works

That doesn't mean more people will do it

@Phrancis hehe

If coding was meant to be really easy maybe more people would do it

well if it means I don't have to spend money on a data plan I think it's worth the agony

12:33 AM
Wait, it's agony?

@MarsUltor Separate conversation
I'm talking about dial up internet

TIL dialup is agony

Is it not?
My memories of dial up are fuzzy at best. I was just a wee lad :P

12:47 AM
@Phrancis I wouldn't say that's a good thing though

Depends who you ask I guess
Maybe that's both the good and bad side of Python; it's pseudo-code that's actually real code
@MarsUltor @quartata dialup was complete agony
I would only accept dialup at gun point today

That's pretty much what I remember lol. Thankfully my parents adopted DSL early

This actually reminds me, getting a Sega Dreamcast on release day many years ago, and I remember playing Chu Chu Rocket over dialup
It worked, for some values of "works"

@Phrancis Is that the one where you're guiding the mice away from the cats

It annoyed my parents though at the time, because when I played, nobody could make phone calls

12:56 AM
I never played but I remember a friend had it
@Phrancis one of the other joys of dial up :P

@quartata I think it was more about guiding the mice to a rocket to launch, but there may have been cats. Been a very long time

anything with cats must be good

@Phrancis Wow, that's chaotic
lol "mouse mania"

I don't necessarily miss that. There were much better games on Dreamcast
This was a Japanese HYPERDIAPER game, I mostly played it because my best friend liked it

1:00 AM
Jet Set Radio and Sonic Adventure were pretty much the two Dreamcast games I really enjoyed

I thought Sonic Adventure was great
Never really played Jet Set Radio, though I heard some people say it was good. Also, Shen Mue.
Chu Chu Rocket was special though, because it was one of the first console games ever to support playing online. At the time, Counter-Strike, TFC and Starcraft were what people played online
I wonder if some people still play those old games...

I doubt the servers for any Dreamcast games are still alive.
TFC and CS1.6 are actually still super active. (CS1.6 is one of the most played games on Steam still)

Wow
I'll bet de_dust is still the most played map on CS1.6 then... I'm a bit surprised people haven't moved on, but also recall most CS 1.6 players I knew were quite serious about it

SyntaxError: Unexpected token 'in bagging area'

1:16 AM
@Phrancis dust2
but yes hehe

dust2 was my undoing

It still is even in CS:S and CS:GO

Original dust was better
Still remember all the times I got AWP across the underpass
Good times...
OMG Day of Defeat is still a thing... I loved that game
BRB going back in time to teenage years

Day of Defeat is still moderately active although there's more European servers than NA servers

I think Call of Duty ruined WW2 shooters quite a bit by making it feel like run&gun, and not like "find a good strategic spot and carefully guard it and play it to your advantage"
Hey @Phrancis, this chat is supposed to be about code golfing and challenges

Feel free to move my messages to another room, I would do the same if this were Code Reviiew

@Phrancis you should become a mod and just eleven it

... coulda sworn he already was a mod...
but no?
@Phrancis were you ever a mod?

No
I'm a RO on CR, that's about it

@Downgoat why isn't PHP on this list

I can't keep you CR high-rep users straight.
I have thought Quill was a mod also.
and I used to think @quartata was.

@Phrancis oh nice, our mods would never let any of us become ROs, we're to immature we don't have enough avocad to bribe them.

lol PHP'; drop table Users;--

@quartata I hope PHP that's a joke

1:31 AM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE ɪᴋʀ :ᴅ
@Downgoat ikr

My SQL injection is rusty

despite numerous pleas

@Phrancis That's not PHP's fault though.

@quartata it is

It is, if you're still using mysqli

1:33 AM
that's why you don't use that

You should totally try Code Review then

@Phrancis ಠ_ಠ

2 votes for Node JS? Very suspicious

If I had a nickel for every new question that didn't use PDO, I'd be retired

1:34 AM
php is hate, php is hell

^

@Phrancis can i has nickel for every letter in every post on cr?

@Phrancis hahaha
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ PHP is like Perl with bonus things

@quartata For some values of "bonus"

@quartata Usually bonus things are good... this is not one of those cases

1:36 AM
@quartata ... perl is also bad

@Downgoat Do you have an actual reason for this logic or.....

he does'nt need one

^

it's perl or php
both are bad
pick FOG or Cheddar or Jolf instead

OK, well then this is happening:
JS is bad

1:37 AM
I have done PHP and it is the language of the devil
@quartata ಠ_ಠ

@Downgoat Well I don't need a reason. It's JS.

oooooooooohhh @Downgoat use jolf as package manager
@Downgoat same
@quartata true
you don't need reason

JS : PHP :: crap : shit

but that doesn't mean it is true
@Downgoat .. so equal?
TIL JS is PHP in disguise.

no, shit is worse than crap in terms of connotation

Connotation? So they're both just figures of speech for assembly?

Don't start a JS holy war again pls

^
START A FUZZY OCTO GUACAMOLE ONE

I should upload one of my PHP utility scripts and show you what well written PHP looks like

ALL MUST BOW TO FOG
@quartata pls no

1:40 AM
@quartata "well written PHP" is an oxymoron

@quartata post it on Code Review

Nicely written PHP would be a welcome change

actually good idea, to improve php skills

1:41 AM
Most of it is $sht

rofl
oh, only php would have $shit already defined. :P

LOL

s/LOL/\*stars\*/ pls

Well written anything must be OOP

Nah

not-OOP is fine, if it's not crap

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Why escape the asterisks?

^
sed is not regex

@MarsUltor Because you have to

But OOP > everything

1:43 AM
No
OOP > some things

@quartata No, why would you?

@MarsUltor regex asterisks means repeat?

50 secs ago, by Downgoat
sed is not regex

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ That's the replacement string, not the match string

oh
#oops
#ohwell

i'm hesitant to close vote because it's weird to me that it got to 33 points and no one else close voted
so i thought maybe i missed something

why the hell did you hardlink
try the normal link:

Wow just while writing up the question I already noticed something real easy I could do

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ more specifically: because the mobile version of chat is garbage, the XKCD apps are garbage, my phone is too slow to run chrome, and I refuse to sink to the level of using safari.

Dang @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ you are finding dupes quick, are you the new Peter?

I. Am. PETER V2.0!!!
Why does everybody post owl faces so much?

?

1:56 AM
this is going to be good

Why do people keep making owl faces at me?

i want to know what you're seeing as owl faces

Dec 20 '15 at 22:02, by Alex A.
@PeterTaylor It's the look of disapproval.
