what kind of dumb question is that
The votes speak for themselves.
So I guess I'm gonna get some more chocolate.
I already took my share of chocolate
CMS: What is your favourite chocolate?
17:08
Milk, 4 bytes
All, 3 bytes
@flawr Lindt, dark, 70%
Yum
@flawr Dark chocolate, combined with some kind of orange marmalade
@arda ... and we have a winner arda at 3 bytes!
@LuisMendo I'm not a big fan of dark chocolate.
17:18
Δ, two bytes
@Adnan And dark chocolate combined with orange flavour less than ever.
All are pretty good, but I really like white chocolate
@DrMcMoylex I love white chocolate.
And dark chocolate. And milk chocolate. All chocolates are amazing and deserve love.
Mine is probably this one:
And everything with almonds.
I like milk chocolate and anything with hazelnuts (Nutella, Rocher, Ritter Sport, ...)
17:21
@KritixiLithos I feel like we should switch from bytes to bites :)
^^ I was going to say s/almonds/hazelnut/
I learned that (at least in oregon) people say filberts instead of hazelnuts, is this only an oregonian thing?
@flawr Ferro rocher, 1 bite
Looks delicious, never had them so far.
17:23
Ferreros in one bite? D: you need to savour them more

Q: what do we mean by "The intention is that each answer shall contain one and only one loophole"

Mukul KumarI want to know briefly about this statement "The intention is that each answer shall contain one and only one loophole"

1 bite when golfing, 4 bites when savouring :)
If you're ever gonna visit Salzburg, you have to try the different Mozartkugeln of every bakery you can find!!!
The ones from Kaffee Fürst are the best IMHO, but all of them are delicious AF.
If you're going to golf, just go with MM (2 bytes, 1 bite) :P
@flawr They are like a mini-Earth, the rocky crust on the outside, the mantle under't, the liquidy chocolate outer core, and finally, the hazelnut inner core, the centrepiece of this piece of art
17:25
(but of course, nobody in their right mind would claim that's their favourite)
@Sp3000 0.5 bites if you take 2 in 1 bite :P
If you're going by that, it should be more like 0.1-0.2 by the rate I eat them
@flawr Dark 85%
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @everyone @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ's last name is Irk :P
@quartata I hope you're not talking about the Stroh Rum.
17:30
No, why would I be talking about rum?
We're talking about chocolate
You can combine those things:)
Well I wouldn't be one to do that :P
Feel free to ruin your chocolate though
There is a local speciality where I grew up:
"Kirschstängeli"
That's an unfortunate picture
17:34
But that is what they look like
So what exactly is it? Like some kind of wafer coated in cocoa powder and with something inside?
0
Q: What are 40 operators better for resolves problem in less characters?

RosLuPWhat are 40 operators and function more important or more used in a [golf] language? (or in language used for codegolf answers)

@Dennis Now that the showcase question is on hold, is there anything answerers can do if they find a bug in their answer? It happened to me only two days ago, and I had to correct the code
I'm not sure what the inside is. Could be caramel?
@LuisMendo Wait, what?
Yes :-(
17:35
@quartata It is just chocolate with Kirsch (cherry liquor) inside.
But that wasn't consensus
@LuisMendo Unless they involve a moderator, no.
@flawr Oh, huh. The outside looked kind of funny so I wasn't sure if it was solid chocolate or something else
@Dennis Another potential problem is changes in the language. I'd like to keep the snippets updated if I ever introduce a change that breaks them
Couln't you just unlock them?
Isn't the enough?
17:38
@Dennis > the majority of the community seems to agree – as do we moderators – that it is too broad for our scope.
I mean, I can understand where you're coming from but your answer is at score 9
That isn't an overwhelming majority I would say
(especially considering the answers above it are at 23 and 13)
@Dennis could you add the relevant meta discussion to the lock thing?
To be honest though, I don't think we should take into account any voting on that question considering how heavily downvoted the actual question was in the first place. I doubt that a good sample of people got to see it
@quartata The 23 answer doesn't actually suggest a course of action. Yes, there are some problems with locking the showcase, but the solution is finding a better format for it. Everything else is just band-aids.
@BlueEyedBeast Lock reasons aren't editable.
A comment?
17:42
^
@Dennis Band-aids for what?
The question has 34 comments. Nobody would see it.
or edit the question at the bottom?
@quartata For the problems I mentioned in my first answer.
Suggestion: showcase should migrate to meta
17:45
@KritixiLithos that's not what meta's for
It's even more off topic on meta.
Also people won't see it and you don't get rep for anything on meta.
The only thing locking this challenge does: satisfy the few people that can't sleep at night if a challenge is slightly off-scope
Just a suggestion
and chat's the only other format in SE. And that wouldn't work at all
17:47
There are other places on the internet. No part of SE is meant for wikis/list questions.
But we're not like any other site on SE.
Just look at tips questions
That's also blatantly flase
e.g. this:
That would definitely qualify as a wiki/list question

only locked to avoid spam/noise
Yes, I mentioned that in my answer.
17:49
Just because we don't have a consensus yet doesn't mean that the answer that a good 40% of a very small sample don't like should be implemented
That made more sense in my head...?
Anyways. It's very obviously controversial and considering there are far higher scoring answers it just strikes me as a very sweeping action
@quartata I'm not talking about scope. The showcase deserves a format where there's one page per language, integration with an online interpreter, entries everyone (independent of upvotes, rep, etc.) can contribute to...
@Dennis But two years have demonstrated that none of these things are needed for people to enjoy showcases
And there's absolutely no way such an alternative would ever attract as much attention
11
All we're doing is punishing people who put effort into their showcases. My answer demonstrated that we can have it in scope
and have a lot of other good popcons with it
Who is punished how exactly?
You're joking, right?
@Dennis Does it? Did a majority of the people actively contributing to the showcase actually request this?
17:54
I mean, aside from the fact that we can't upvote locked answers....
Who's going to click on something that says "[closed] [locked]"
Rather than asking who is punished by locking it, I'm still loking for an answer as to what we're gaining for locking it. The only argument I've seen are "It's out of scope OMG!!!" and "the showcase deserves better"
"We should do something better, so let's disable what we have now without a clear path of migration" is not a good idea in any way.
9
I know this is rough position to be in @Dennis but bottom line this was a bit of a premature action
Indeed
Don't feel like I'm pinning this all on you; I know this was probably a joint decision among the moderators
17:56
It was. A unanimous one fwiw.
I'd like to also add my voice against locking the showcase. It may be a poor fit for the site, but so is PPCG for the SE format in general.
But the moderators are supposed to execute the community's decision in this situations and it does not seem like we've settled on one yet
With that mindset, SE could close PPCG over night because a code golfing platform deserves something better and barely fit's in the QA format.
@mınxomaτ Don't give them ideas
This has nothing to do with whether we should or shouldn't, just that we haven't decided on either yet
17:57
@Fatalize :D
@Fatalize haha
Even though I agree that the showcase doesn't fit with our format, I like that it's there and can't think of a better place for it on this site.
I don't think it should have been locked
@Downgoat <insert nag about fastdl replays and holiday plugin>
@Downgoat can deny, it's a lot harder for an american to pronounce than that >_>
goddamnit, I just finished my next snippet for the showcase
>:U
18:13
^^^ Can confirm, I have no clue how you pronounce it
18:26
@DrMcMoylex thanks for the confirmation I guess? :p

Q: Draw a Dragon Curve

Jorge PerezYou task for today: draw a DRAGON CURVE!!! In case you don't know what a Dragon Curve is, here's an introductory ViHart video (Really cool, please watch!) https://youtu.be/EdyociU35u8 For those of you who decided not to watch the video, the first 12 iterations of the dragon curve are shown below...

@quartata No kidding. There seems no obvious concensus at meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/10457/…
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ

In the Dragon Curve question
Unless ETH's highest voted suggestion of "The showcase is not an optimal solution, but it's the best we have for now."
@El'endiaStarman Haha, I literally just did that. Porting SOLARIS C to GNU C is really a goldmine of this situation.
@Calvin'sHobbies I've been anti-locking for a while, but he's right, it is pretty broad
@DrMcMoylex And how is this an issue?
Again, SE could have the same conversation about PPCG every day. We are unfit for SE in theory, and the showcase is unfit for us .. in theory. I'm completely against taking action when there is no actual problem that needs solving.
18:33
Too broad is a valid close reason
@DrMcMoylex That isn't the point. The point is that we haven't come to a consensus
We close challenges as too broad to stop bad content
It doesn't matter where you stand. That's what's going on
This challenge doesn't generate a lot of bad content
in fact it generates a lot of good content
It is a starting guide to many languages, esolangs in particular
18:34
@Fatalize Exactly. I don't see that the showcase produces bad content or negatively impacts the site in any way. There's no motive to close here.
@mınxomaτ I agree :)
@quartata OK, but the meta post is over two weeks old. If we don't have a consensus yet, when will we ever?
@KritixiLithos oh, oops
somebody will fix in the next edit I think, don't want to make an edit just to nuke that
Since there's not really a reason to take action, reaching consensus in finite time isn't really a requirement here IMO. Vote-wise, the anti-locking party far outweighs the other.
@DrMcMoylex consensus by default should be the votes IMO, and they clearly are for not locking the shocase
18:37
And I don't really see any evidence for that (excluding the mods):

A: Proposal to lock the Language Showcase as historically significant

DennisWhile the debate regarding the showcase's ontopicness is still open, the majority of the community seems to agree – as do we moderators – that it is too broad for our scope. As a result, I have closed and locked the challenge in question. Unfortunately, that means that we do not have a place for...

@DrMcMoylex What Minx and East said. The current consensus by a 10 vote margin is that it should stay open, at least until there's a better solution.
Apparently, not even the MinGW devs know how to deal with thread syncing :D
@Calvin'sHobbies last time I looked at your answer it was at negative 4. Huh
@DrMcMoylex It is an issue we've been struggling with for over a year so
@DrMcMoylex That's because his answer was relatively simplistic not that people didn't agree
That's weird, what's up with the funny gap between my messages
@mınxomaτ ಠ_ಠ
oops compose fail
18:47
I don't really have time to discuss it right now. I'm also not entirely sure which side I'm on
That's it. I'm porting this crap to C#. I've seen enough #ifdef _WEIRD_COMPILER for many lifetimes.
Why not Java?
I don't have any system where Java is pre-installed. With .NET, it's at least on Windows.
Thinking about it, apart from Rider (which comes with it's own runtime), I've never installed or used Java anywhere.
@DrMcMoylex I thought it was adnan
wait this is the other sock
wait wat
we have 2 zalgos and 2 socks now?
Other than that it seems that C# and Java have quite similar features, right?
(I don't know anything about C# except what I read just now on WP.)
18:59
@Dennis @AlexA. @Doorknob @MartinEnder Can one of you respond to this contradiction?
@flawr Dunno, this project will quite heavily benefit from LINQ. I never used Java, so it would take me even longer to get going. Plus I'm deeply familiar with how DotNET and Mono implement just about anything.
C#7 adds tuples and stuff, too.
Before locking the Showcase, I think the meta proposal should have been featured for a while
I didn't say that the majority agrees that the showcase should be closed, just that it is too broad. My other answer was at +18/-9 at that point. Closure is simply the logical consequence. The two highest voted answers do not address broadness at all. ETHProductions' just says there are issues with locking it, but doesn't propose a course of action. In the comments, he agrees that the alternative will happen faster if we cut off the existing solution. quartata's answer says that it is on topic, but he agrees in the comments that it is too broad. — Dennis ♦ 2 mins ago
@Dennis I did not. That was regarding Tweetable Mathematical Art
26 socks moved to Trash

19:11
@Dennis thank you
The votes and answers show that it is a gray area regarding broadness and scope which means it isn't just a natural consequence of applying the rules nor is there a consensus

@quartata OK, fine, you agreed that it was a potential concern and explicitly stated that your answer didn't focus on broadness.
@Dennis Seriously? Sock conversations may be dopey but they aren't hurting anyone.
2
@Dennis I agreed that it was a potential concern in that others might argue on that point, but I do not agree with it nor did I think initially that this discussion would become about it considering the scope of the original question
I miss Chris Jester-Young's laissez-faire approach to modding.
2
@Calvin'sHobbies It was pretty noisy.
@Calvin'sHobbies Yeah and we had shitty questions
No offense to Chris but laissez-faire does not scale
particularly in 2014 when we had hordes of low-rep users but very very few high-rep users.
It would probably work better now though
19:17
@Calvin'sHobbies Chat was pretty quiet back then. We're having a serious discussion, and there's simply no need to dilute it with noise.
2
Yep. And the sock situation was pretty close to getting out of hand.
That's a sentence I never thought I'd say.
@Calvin'sHobbies I strongly disagree
@mınxomaτ hahahaha
It's like taking the worst of chat and concentrating it into a couple messages and pretending it's OK because it comes from a different user
But this is just an internet chatroom
a place to goof off a little
19:24
@Calvin'sHobbies There wasn't any real content there though and it was in the middle of something quite a bit more serious
I mean I didn't mind but I understand
@Calvin'sHobbies I agree, anyways, I'm pretty sure the Socks would have left after they had fun
@quartata Well, alright. But I swear the mods (main and chat) have been borderline dystopian recently ;)

@Calvin'sHobbies That's basically what happened to world. Everything is politics and there is no moderate middle-ground anymore
Nice starbait ;)

Moderators are people too
@quartata I'm not so sure.
Borderline dystopian? For trashing random nonsense? For real?

Hey, how 'bout we forget the last hour or so and be happy with our lives instead of arguing :)
Look we've flung them off the deep end from "sleepy golf site" to "noisy chat rooms and complicated meta arguments" this past year. If you don't like the way they handle things, that's fine but call them out on it nicely

19:36
Anyway
@Dennis I'm obviously biased since I wrote the Showcase, but IMO closing it is akin to a company that discontinues a very popular product because it does not align with their core values, losing them customers. They shifted their product line but perhaps they should have shifted their core values (while maintaining integrity) if their desire is to grow and get more customers.
@mınxomaτ use mobile mode?
Like, shouldn't we gravitate towards things that help out our site, like vastly popular questions?
@Calvin'sHobbies Closing the showcase would be like Apple removing the headphone jack.... oh wait :P

> headphone hack
@Downgoat And removing ports from the MacBooks
19:39
@Calvin'sHobbies Since this is apparently such a contentious issue, maybe we should rethink what "broad" means on PPCG.
