7:00 PM
Many SMBF programs (I'm pretty sure I'm the majority user) make use of dynamic code creation on the right "half" of the tape.

So which interpreter should I use?

I think it would be more useful to have the Python interpreter.

none

@Dennis The Python interpreter I created is linked on the esolangs page.
Perhaps you could make both available.
With a checkbox or something.

@SuperJedi224 aren't you a regular on xkcd fora too?

7:02 PM
@quintopia I was for a while. Not really at the moment though.

@mbomb007 That would require a non-trivial modification of the backend. Language-specific toggles are planned though.

@SuperJedi224 remind me your name therew

@quintopia I'm SuperJedi224 there as well

@mbomb007 Switched to Python.

@SuperJedi224 rofl I just googled your username and found your wikia account on Googology wikia.

7:06 PM
Yeah I'm on wikia as well.

Yeah, but I didn't know there was a Googology wikia. I have a wikia account too.

@RikerW Created it a while back. Four other people have signed up, but I'm still the only person there who has actually posted anything

@SuperJedi224 I'll sign up if you want. :P
What is it for?

@SuperJedi224 ah, the user search is case sensitive.

@RikerW There's a board for my webcomic (which I also haven't updated in a while), and a couple of boards for stuff I made on scratch
And a board for my Candy Box 2 mod

7:11 PM
@SuperJedi224 oh you were the one posting the ridiculous E# notation in the my number is bigger thread. IT ALL MAKES SENSE. (except the ridiculous notation)

@quintopia Hyper-E Notation is not ridiculous
I can probably find you a notation that is ridiculous though

@SuperJedi224
t0=0
t2n=tn
t2n+1=1-tn

That's Thue-Morse!

Yes.

(i'd never seen this def'n, sorry)
now how does one do it in a two-tag system?
(i'll figure it out later, have to go to the airport now)

But the extensible e system is something else:

7:17 PM
SHUTTING DOWN

rm -rf /

@quintopia Shutting down the airport is a good way to get on a bunch of government lists ...

7:29 PM
There sure are easier ways to do that

Is there a way to create a reference to a particular list item in Python?

Hmm?

Something like this?
Oh, nevermind.

You can save it in a variable... Or slice the list and save the entire tail...

@quintopia He wants a reference though.

7:33 PM
Yeah, updating the array should update the variable.
So to speak.

Oh you mean even if it's a primitive?

@Dennis You may need to edit the interpreter. Some of the lines were commented out specifically for Ideone

I don't know any way that doesn't involve wrapping lists in a fancy listener class... Or I would have used it myself.

@SuperJedi224 I'm making a GitHub for it :P

@quintopia Nevermind. The elements of my list are actually lists, so the problem kinda solves itself.

7:37 PM
Nice

@mbomb007 Oh, right. I'll deal with that later.

Suggestions for what to call a GOL-based language? :/
I've been referring to it as "Gen"

GOL?

@Dennis Game of Life

Lang of Life?

7:40 PM
Hm. Maybe. A tad on the long side :/

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ GliderScript

@Zgarb That sounds cool! Though the grid is finite, and glider's don't exist for very long ^_^

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ GOLf ?

@quartata :D I like it!
except it isn't very golfy

GoLScript?

7:43 PM
GolDScript?

@Dennis I think I'll use that
@Optimizer or that
IDK, the D is kinda random tho

Gol D Roger?
never heard?

whenever I see "gol" word, I automatically complete it to that :D
what about "gold roger" ?

I don't know who xe is

7:46 PM
monkey d lufy?

portugas d ace ?
trafalgar d law?

@Optimizer Oh
I know that one

@mbomb007 Dennis the Menace

you really do read the transcript ._.

7:49 PM
Yup. :D
Except that five people answered him anyways.

XD super-ninja'd

^ This is a line.

That's the "Hello, World!" program in a graphical programming language I'm currently drafting

7:52 PM
Basic interpreter

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ What is THAT?

@FlagAsSpam my GoL-based language
:3

...
Dayum.

I'm not psyched to write "Hello world"

Here it is zoomed in 16x:

7:55 PM
can I have a 64x version too?

@Optimizer Why.

I have high dpi

thanks!

@quintopia Assuming I know what part you're talking about, it's a lipogram where o is excluded.

8:04 PM
I'm talking about the Grass chapter. Apparently there is a rule governing chapter divisions too?

I didn't see the reply arrow

Yeah, @quartata told me, I think
Oh shoot g2g peace out!

Bye. o.o

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ
At 100x:

What does that one do

That one's a truth machine.
Those aren't all the same shade of dark grey, btw.

8:18 PM
Will your graphical language be more powerful than Deltaplex? :p

I don't know.

My screen can't distinguish the grays

Are you sure that they're different?
:P
Oh, damn, they are.

It has #0B0001, #0B0003, #0A0000, #0A0100, and #0B0203
#0A0100 appears twice
White's reserved as a no-op.

RGB points, left to right, for me: [10,0,0],[255,255,255],[11,2,3],[10,1,0],[11,0,1],[10,1,0] (there's a slight blur on this one to the right - I assume that that's the photo editor - its values are [11,0,2]),[11,0,3]

8:24 PM
I would actually call them "extremely dark red"

@PhiNotPi Pretty much.

It basically makes you have 256^3-1 commands.
This is powerful. xD

Some of the commands (currently red values 00-09) use the green and blue values as an argument

Scary.

And nowhere near all colors have anything assigned to them yet

8:27 PM
@SuperJedi224 Considering that there are 16777216 3-byte colors, you have a long way to go. :P

@SuperJedi224 Don't waste your commands. :P

For storage, it will use both a tape and a stack.
What's the best way to express in the specs *p=~*p?

8:42 PM
What is *p?

My guess, not knowing what language he's talking about, is a pointer.

He's developing a graphical language.
Yes, a pointer was one thing that came to mind, but there's also Python's version.

Setting the cell to bitwise not its previous value

@SuperJedi224 That seems like a perfectly good way to say it.

8:54 PM
Does anyone else see two avatars when they go to tab complete Dennis' name in a ping?

Me
The other one is a sock

Not me. I only see the sock.

Has someone named Dennis whose avatar is a sock been in chat?
They must have

Yes.

When?
I guess I missed it.
@Dennis Nobody sees themself when they try to tab complete a name in a ping.

8:58 PM
Can't find it.

Damn, so if I try to ping Dennis, the real Dennis, I'll end up pinging both of them?

@AlexA. I know, but you asked.

@Dennis WOOT

Haha
I guess I'll try to work solely from replies, otherwise sock man will just have to deal.

There are like five users with that exact username
...

8:59 PM
Hmm. What are we missing now in Jelly
We need some array manipulation for sure.

That's why I wanted to ping Dennis: I have an idea.

Moar looping.

@Dennis If I add some array manipulation stuff, would you accept the pull request?
Assuming you approve of what I add

Real dennis, identicon dennis, dennis from london, dennis the sock, and dennis from NY.

@quartata I haven't added array manipulation yet because I want to rewrite the vectorizer first.

9:00 PM
@Dennis Oh.

How is string manipulation in Jelly currently? My idea would be to add a "mirror" operator that would invert brackets and stuff. Useful for ASCII art and challenges like Stewie's recent one.

@AlexA. Non-existant

@quartata After that, I'd be happy to get some help.
25 secs ago, by quartata
@AlexA. Non-existant

:3

Real dennis and dennis the sock are the only ones who have actually earned any rep during the last year.

9:01 PM
Array manipulation is one of those things that bother me with languages like Stuck

@Dennis Hahaha I was just about to ask why you replied to me with my own message XD

^^

Yeah, string manipulation isn't a thing at all (strings don't even exist).
But Dennis has some good ideas for them.

Dennis has some good ideas for everything.

He said something about Bubblegum strings (I assume that means strings with a special delimiter that automagically convert from bijective base 96)

9:03 PM
@quartata Not since I started to rewrite the parser at least. Strings are coming soon. I just wanted to finish the parser first. The previous parser required a rewrite every time I added a feature. :/

@Dennis Yipes

@quartata I mean like Bubblegum. If possible, LZMA. If possible, DEFLATE. Last resort: convert to bijective base 96.

@Dennis Ah, I see.

That requires fixing the char table first though.

So more like running the strings through Bubblegum really

9:04 PM
Basically.

You know, I don't know if it would be possible to add
But something that makes TeaScript good at some is Shoco
Which is very very good at compressing short strings (far better than DEFLATE)

In other words, Jelly will have a Bubblegum wrapper. ba-dum-tshh

Gotta go for a while.

It's a C library though is the issue :/

@Zgarb Congratulations, you win the Internet, now we can all go home

9:07 PM
@AlexA. Please drive home safely

Is that general advice or do you assume I'm drunk? :P

@AlexA. I don't know, it sounded better in my head.
I think the joke was that you'd be laughing so hard you couldn't drive
:/

Meanwhile: My youtube playlist just gave me two different versions of the tetris theme in a row
...

What sort of playlist has two different Tetris themes? :P
Are they covers?

9:11 PM
It has the Smooth McGroove version of the A theme, the Smooth McGroove version of the B theme, and the Impossible Piano Remix version of the A theme
Because why not

@El'endiaStarman that's so sad

I know, right?

you sadist?

@Optimizer I like you edited that to make it more passive

I think 3.3 Msoups is enough for one haul

9:15 PM
passive is always better than flags

Not always...

so you want a flag then?

I am a flag.
waves

are you as flag as offensive?

o-o
Offensive = Spam
Spam = Offensive

9:22 PM
or as flag as spam?

:D
Yes.

@FlagAsSpam Spafensive

o-o

Yes! Today is the best Friday. A product I was working on achieved ship acceptance!

> Spafensive: come to the spa, where you can also fence!

9:25 PM
@FlagAsSpam I'm sure some place like that exists.

> Spafensive, n.: a spa in which duels are fought.

> Spanfensive, n.: A very rude spa

@Rainbolt That's good, right? Now you enter the maintenance period?

Actually, that marks the end of our maintenance period

> Spanfensive ?

9:29 PM
We have an internal testing lab. We release to an external test lab. They integrate us into a larger product and then release to the customer. At that point, we provide support, but no further code changes (usually).

Ah, so you get to just do the fun part of coding

No, we have to whitebox our code changes
And write unit tests

I hate maintenance. That's a big reason why I'm not a developer.

We still haven't gotten "unit test coverage" into our definition or "done" but I'm pushing for it
I'm kind of a broken record when it comes to process improvement. I never have any new ideas. Only the ideas that I learned about when we started Scrum a year ago that nobody ever listens to.
@TimmyD What do you do?
Oh, nevermind. "Exchange/PowerShell admin that masquerades as a code monkey."

Anyone seen these?
They're beautiful. xD

9:33 PM
@Rainbolt I'm an Exchange and messaging admin
Hah, ninja'd

Do you work for Microsoft, or just a really large company that needs someone to manage their Exchange server? Or am I completely missing what an "Exchange admin" is?

Yeah, that's why 99% of my submissions are in PowerShell, because it's really the only language I'm intimately familiar with ... I'm decent at VB and BATCH, but the last time I really touched C/Python/Java/etc. was back in college
Large company, >4500 users and dozens of locations throughout the US

I see

9:37 PM
IndustrialCraft

Never got into that. A friend of mine is big in it, but I prefer vanilla.

Hm?

Spend a week on the PPCG server and you'll never want to play Vanilla again

Actually don't play much MC anymore. I tend to get bored.

^
@Rainbolt Why do you say that?

9:38 PM
I thought the PPCG server was mostly Vanilla.

Mostly
A couple of non-instrusive mods only

It is. It's just they after a week, we had so many farms going that there wasn't much else to do
All that's left is "build stuff"

The fun part for me is the first hour or two on a fresh world. Exploring, surviving the first couple nights, establishing a base. Once you get some iron armor and equipment, the game is just dull.

At least with modpacks, you can progress through each mod individually

9:40 PM
Yeah, that's basically why I moved a great distance south. Fresh area, and unmined!

@El'endiaStarman IRL or in Minecraft?

I'm looking forward to trying out Ark - a bunch of friends and I are getting together over New Years to give it a go on a private LAN server.

In Minecraft. :P

Are you on the PPCG MC Server?

9:41 PM
Well I know you live in the South IRL, just didn't know whether that was because it was fresh and unmined. :P

Haha. I am not a miner (or minor) in real life.

Oh no? :P

If I ever get around to hosting a modded server, who would play on it?

hi all

@Rainbolt ew
Don't talk to me about IC2
...or shudders GregTech

9:47 PM
How about a modpack that covers IC2, 50-100 other mods, and not gregtech?

@Rainbolt That's OK.
I'll play anything that has Thermal Expansion in it, really.

Thermal?

I like Mekanism better, but I'm not picky.
@AlexA. Ye.
I wish I finished that modpack I started work on two years ago...

I don't know what any of these things are.

@AlexA. MC tech mods.

9:49 PM
Tech?
Still lost.

@AlexA. Electricity and stuffs
RotaryCraft, FYI, is actually really awesome and isn't deserving of the bad rap it gets

Huh. Okay.

They add things like electricity, additional machines to process ore, additional ores, jetpacks or lasers or other tools, etc.
Various mods offer various flavors.

Or my Death Knight minimod.

If you have a modpack with RotaryCraft, I will play all day on your server.
Basically.

9:50 PM
Resource packs are wonderful. :D

I wish my computer could run a shaderpack

My favorite mod is EnderIO

Or Optifine

Not a shader pack.
Optifine makes the game smoother for me. o.o

I've played Galacticraft. Is that a tech mod?

9:51 PM
@AlexA. Yes.

Okay

When I do play, I use Monkeyfarm's customized John Smith resource pack. It strikes a good blend between "game graphics" and "realism graphics".

I'd say it qualifies as a tech-extension mod.

It's fun but IMO way too complicated.

Usually you need a base mod like Thermal Expansion that adds an electricity system. Then you add other mods on top that use that electricity system.
@Rainbolt Those conduits are awesome
I also like the energy monitor

9:53 PM
There's a mod that I can't remember the name of that has Space Pylons
You surround your house with pylons
Then supply a ton of energy

@Rainbolt AE

Then flip a switch and boom, your house is on a floppy disk

And it is spatial pylons
Although I don't remember if AE2 has them
AE is a really really important mod.
I used to hate it, but then I realized it's actually really useful.

You can have your house on a rotation so that depending on what time of day it is, you'll have a different house

What about the redstone paste mod?

9:56 PM
There's a nearly identical redstone mod out there that I've used before

@Rainbolt RedPower 2?
Sadly, that's dead.
(and with it went the good generation of mods lel)

@quartata Yea, that one

@Rainbolt RedPower 2 is as dead as a doornail. Been so for two years.
Project-Red is a good substitute but it isn't even close to the extent of the original

Oh the portal mod is also cool
I mostly like the music
"She looked a lot like you.... maybe not quite so heavy"

How do I explain the art of code golf to someone?

@FlagAsSpam Just write a CJam program on a piece of paper and hand it to them

sigh

Worked on my friend
