OK so only now has it occurred to me just how much of a massive undertaking this language will be.

Why not just make a filter language?

It's not that simple.
I have to tokenize it in order to tell what is what.
I can't replace Sy with System if it is a method name or a string literal.

No, no - read the program line by line, convert it into java, then compile.

That's easy. You need just one loop and a basic identifier method. If an identifier is caught, break to evaluate the arguments and skip the parsed code @quartata

On second thought, Ulam's spiral might be impossible with Minkolang 0.1. I can't yet reverse or rotate the stack, and I don't have memory storage/retrieval yet.

9:09 PM
@minxomat The identifier part is what makes it hard.
I think I have an idea though.

Not really.

The only way I can possibly do it is if I have, somehow, a way to get the next number in a left-to-right fashion from the number I have now using only the number I have now.

@quartata A streaming parser as I described is rather easy. The whole parser for this high level language is only ~3k lines of VB ^^

@El'endiaStarman Don't forget you can also consider that the number of numbers is n^2. If you can find specific primes in the set, you can do it with a calculation.

I guess the main issue with wanting to get a Hello World example right off the bat is that it uses a static class.

9:12 PM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE Don't I have to do them in order from left to right, top to bottom though?

There's my problem with that. You'd have to implement scope to distinguish between a static class reference and a variable.

Hmm

making it fair for alex

First what I need to do before I worry about that is create a lookup table of loaded classes.

9:13 PM
lol @DankMemes

That'll allow for easy matching later.

@El-endiaStarman Yes. There is a general mathematical format for generating the rows.

@DankMemes What?

was afk for a bit but remember that burd rotat?

yas

9:15 PM
...Edits do not work with apostrophes, apparently.

@AlexA. 80%, nice... I think my record is 50%. :P

:D
I wonder who holds the overall record. Probably Geobits.

Record for what?

1 min ago, by Doorknob
@AlexA. 80%, nice... I think my record is 50%. :P

Percent of the board, right?

9:17 PM
(the message that that is a reply to)

Today I learned the little arrow button takes you to the message it is a reply to.

Why do so few people realize that?

@AlexA. He holds the record of 100%.

Why do people not use the reply button? ಠ_ಠ

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Wikipedia doesn't have it. Remember that this formula has to be generated using one number. Also, while loops repeat until the stack is empty or the top of stack is 0, but I have no way of knowing how many elements are on the stack (yet).

9:19 PM
@Doorknob ikr
@quartata There was a time at which every message visible on the starboard was from Geobits?

@quartata That's one of the first things I discovered here

^

when I came here for the first time and was lurking for a few minutes before saying anything

@AlexA. Yes.

Whoa.

9:21 PM
@AlexA. well, you only need 2 more good messages to join those ranks :)
before anyone else posts anything good
lol
gg

Fixed that for you.

@El'endiaStarman Just think about it for a second - the first row has the numbers all in order, reversed. Second row, the first and last letters are out of order. Continue the pattern, and you get to the row with the most disorderedness is the center row, then it goes out. You can figure out what the rows will be as so.

sigh

ಠ___ಠ

Wait what just happened.

9:22 PM
noooo mods
y u do dis

Cheaters. XD

@DankMemes 4 teh gud of humanty
thx scooby @Doo

@VTCAKAVSMoACE I agree, it's pretty interesting

@VTCAKAVSMoACE I can get the first row without too much trouble. But how do I know when I'm done with it?

@DankMemes I like that you realized the function of the reply button immediately after joining chat and yet you don't use it. :P

9:23 PM
lazy
I used to

It's on the right side of the message too when you hover over it.

@AlexA. there happy now?

yis

<plug type='shameless'>There's also this</plug>

@Doorknob Since when are assignments EVER made in closing tags? :P

9:25 PM
@Doorknob Haven't used but can confirm: Is probably really cool

@El'endiaStarman Happy now? :P

@Doorknob Yes. ^_^

<plug type='wall-outlet'>

</plug>

o thx i 4got 2 clos ma tug
Like the other day I was playing around with terminal colors and couldn't figure out how to make things stop being purple.

9:28 PM
trying to figure out how this userscript works

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Like, I don't know if you know Befunge, but imagine doing it in that without p,g (memory storage/retrieval), and `\` (swap top two elements of stack). In case you don't, restrict yourself to one stack where you have non-destructive access to only the top element and destructive access to the top two elements. Plus a while loop.

@Doorknob I spent a good part of yesterday evening using vim. What have you done to me? D:

@AlexA. $xP

Apparently there's a thing called MacVim which I didn't know existed. It has a GUI. Purpose = defeated IMO.
@Doorknob Money and experience points?

@AlexA. end of line, delete :, put it back before the D

9:31 PM
When I said "using vim," I should have qualified it with "poorly."

@AlexA. A PHP variable used to store windows XP

@El'endiaStarman Can you explain it to me in Fish?

@DankMemes haha the entire OS
I did learn about vim's paste mode yesterday, which made things less infuriating.

@AlexA. You haven't learned how to move to EOL, delete the char under the cursor, or put text from the default register yet? ಠ_ಠ

One thing is bothering me. Alex is demolishing the starboard, and I don't see a single ಠ_ಠ or caret. ಠ________ಠ

9:33 PM
@El'endiaStarman Well, you know that there's n rows, therefore there is n columns.

@Doorknob I don't even know what any of that means. I know dG though!

@AlexA. You don't know what EOL (end of line) means...?

Oh, no I know that.

or "delete the char under the cursor?"

9:33 PM
.......................................................................

I guess I know that too.

or... paste?

I eat that

(aka put in vim)

For deleting under the cursor I just go in insert mode and press backspace. To go to EOL I use the arrow keys.

Q: Reading the news is boring. Help me out!

Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'BʀɪᴇɴEveryone knows that the news is boring. Really boring. Unless if it's about Politicians and their scandals. That is fun! But alas, Clinton can commit only so many scandals. So, I am employing you to make the news more interesting. Objective Given an HTML snippet, perform all the substitutions f...

I guess the only part of what you said that I don't actually understand is "default register."

@AlexA. ... I hope that's a joke ಠ__________ಠ

...

there needs to be a way to have a more intense ಠ_ಠ
ಠ_ಠ

haha
You might be able to fashion one out of eyes from the Kannada alphabet and Arabic diacritics for eyebrows.

9:36 PM
┻━┻ ︵¯\_(ಠ_ಠ)_/¯︵ ┻━┻

Hahaha

4 mins ago, by Alex A.
When I said "using vim," I should have qualified it with "poorly."

@AlexA. bind your arrow keys to <nop> plz

xD I was about to say...

9:37 PM
@Doorknob wai

(also, abusing insert mode like that (to delete a single char) will get you slapped in the face over the internet by every vim user ever :P)

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Okay. You have v<>^ and !?. You have +-*,%. You have =). You have : and ;. You have 0...9. And i, but with no parsing required. That's all of the instructions ><> and Minkolang share, in ><> terms. Oh, and branches.

@AlexA. because if you're gonna use arrow keys, might as well just use Notepad

Haha

(oops, is @PhiNotPi around? <.<)

9:39 PM
Link me the code, maybe? :)

@Doorknob I have a feeling he won't be offended. I'm sure he's aware that there are more effective tools for code editing than Notepad.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Minkolang.

Lol, I'm a Notepad++ newb

Right now I use vim so that I don't have to leave the terminal to make a quick edit to something. I can just do vim somejuliafile.jl, edit, :wq, julia somejuliafile.jl

9:41 PM
I have IDEs but they take too long to start for just simple hacking

@El'endiaStarman So it's very similar then. Alright.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Notepad != Notepad++

@AlexA. Most definitely.

I think it's a viable language for this.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Heavily inspired by Befunge and ><>.

9:41 PM
Notepad++ >>> Notepad

Only by a little bit. :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ increment Notepad bitwise shift right Notepad?

@Doorknob That results in the mangled mess that is my use of vim.

@Doorknob Oops, no. Math symbol. >>> means is very greater than. ^_^

Usually that's >>, not >>>

9:42 PM
I know, but it's still a symbol.

No, it's a travesty.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE It definitely would be. <meme>IF I HAD FOR LOOPS!</meme> Or while loops that take only the top n elements from the parent stack.

I didn't even know there was a "very greater than" O_o
is there a "super duper greater than"?

9:43 PM
vim > emacs >>>>>>>>> notepad++ > notepad :P
2

D:
though probably true

@Doorknob vim > emacs > notepad++ > complete trash > notepad

same thing with paint
photoshop > gimp > paint.net > complete trash > ms paint

@El'endiaStarman It'll just take longer - if you have while, you have for, provided you can test for values. Which you can.

9:46 PM
@Doorknob You'll likely see it when you get to real analysis. That's when I first saw it.

you know, you could just onebox the image :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I remember seeing that you could put ! in front of links to force one-boxing (if possible).

@El'endiaStarman One-boxing?

9:47 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Where images, Wikipedia articles, xkcd comics, etc. automatically display in chat in a nicer format.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I would probably recommend removing the bit about Clinton from your post. Politics can be a sensitive topic for many, and Hillary has many supporters who may take offense.

@AlexA. Kay.
I dunno :P

No, ![description](link).

^

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Hmm. Yes, I think I see. I need a formula to convert (x,y) to n though.

He's pretty popular among the younger folks it seems (despite him being ancient).

we can all agree that if trump wins, we're screwed right?

@VTCAKAVSMoACE I think it's actually !link.

that's not gonna cause any debate

9:50 PM
So I was looking up Unicode's "very much greater than" character, and I found "U+22DA LESS-THAN EQUAL TO OR GREATER-THAN ⋚"

@DankMemes Yes, we can agree

@DankMemes Canada, here I come!

Wut? o-o Man, I really need to get better at markdown.
Ooh, I really want to see a language use interrobangs.

9:51 PM
ò.ó

@VTCAKAVSMoACE I am working on a langauge. You will see interrobangs.

Like, if fish used interrobangs... that would be so helpful.

What in the world is an "interrobang"?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ fangirls

9:52 PM
⸘‽

wow such

Oh, crap, it's starred... x.x

XD That would be me.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE What should the ‽ command do? Mine is a strip-based language.

Strip-based?

9:53 PM
^

Brainf*** is a strip-based langauge, eg.

Tape == strip?

Again, ^

@AlexA. Tape apx. strip.

apx?

9:54 PM
Strip can be more than one tape.

Approximates.

What are you language my head

@VTCAKAVSMoACE ^

RIP english
resisting urge to post the meme

Well, an interrobang would imply a not-if.
Because ! would be not and ? would be if.

9:55 PM
I always associate interrobangs with @Doorknob because he's the one who introduced me to them.

Well, ! is an inline-comment and n is negation. ? is if.

⸘por qué‽
whoops wrong order...

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Well, that makes it difficult to implement.

> because he's the one who introduced me to them.

9:56 PM
Whenever I try to type a normal interrobang I always end up with a reversed one. :/

D:

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Not really efficient in terms of computing, but perhaps in code size=)

Just use &# syntax.

My custom keyboard allows me to insert them :D
‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽

9:57 PM
I always use "compose + ? + !" which results in ⸘

@flawr That's what I meant.

the correct way to get an interrobang is apparently compose ! ?

What is compose?
Nvm we've been over this

uhhh

Haha

9:58 PM
whoops

WTF

I meant to reply to that and I deleted it
9

hahahaha

9:58 PM
-_____-

Stars are proliferating.

And you cannot even undelete????

Not in chat

@Doorknob Suuuure.

... adds confirmation dialog to "delete" in chat userscript
2

9:59 PM
haha

My revenge plan is down starring all your chat message as soon that feature is enabled.
