@ThomasOwens just pick a technology and play with it... create some data-meddling. Pick a random algorithm and figure out how to implement it with that. Pick something very unfamiliar- it'll break you out of the approaches that automatically come to mind for everything, and then you'll have more ideas of things to try for picking up languages/technologies.

The whole thing is because I'm living in main without branch isolation, I check in less frequently because I don't want anything in source control that's not fairly solid and stable, but then I'm in fear of losing my drive... local git over SVN wouldn't help me with that fear

@JimmyHoffa it wouldn't? local branches and stashes are a big deal for me, it means I can commit what I'm doing in one branch and go do something else for a while without any risk of them getting tangled (or me having to do the equivalent of what I just said manually with Windows Explorer)

though I've never tried git-svn personally, I have enough tools getting in my way as it is I'm in no hurry to add more
