But then the jvm languages became more viable: quora.com/Why-do-programmers-say-Clojure-is-their-favorite-Ruby

@ThomasOwens just pick a technology and play with it... create some data-meddling. Pick a random algorithm and figure out how to implement it with that. Pick something very unfamiliar- it'll break you out of the approaches that automatically come to mind for everything, and then you'll have more ideas of things to try for picking up languages/technologies.

Or just drink more SCOTCH
that will get the creative juices flowing too

@Ampt YES! Yes this is YES! Truth TO Pwower!?!

that is the only cute drunk creature I've ever seen

@Ixrec that cuts deep..

7:03 PM
and since I don't drink, time to watch Doctor Who

@Ixrec xmas special is playing in theaters here in a few weeks..

user41796
@JimmyHoffa He's never seen you, so don't be so sensitive

oh yes, I'm not missing that

user15026
@Ampt Cookies are the thing I am worst at baking, tbh :P

@Ixrec has it gotten better? The old guy could be an OK doctor, but I couldn't take the terribad writing anymore after about halfway through his first season

7:04 PM
but I've watched literally all of New Who at the moment so I'm trying some of the Old Who serials

@AshleyNunn Sorry, I meant to say Cupcakes.

@JimmyHoffa opinions on this thing vary so wildly and I am so terrible at judging what other people like and dislike that I'm utterly incapable of answering that

or maybe it was the second season when I quit? I don't remember anymore. The writing got so horrible with the doctor being a supporting character
@Ixrec is he still just a supporting character like he was for a long time?
I recall multiple episodes where he was barely even in them, it was all just that lass whom I can't even recall the name of..

this is not a thing I remember happening, probably because yay subjective, do you recall any specific episodes that might jog my memory of this?

She was a good companion, but it seemed like it was her show for a bit

7:06 PM
Clara?

user41796
Annoyingly loud PM is having a conversation I want to overhear for once.

yeah Clara; there was so much about her and her school and crap for a good long while
also, the doctor was an utter jerk to her for a good while
is he still an arsehole?

that part I do remember, I don't believe he's been a dick to her at all this season

user15026
@Ampt Those I can do!

certainly nothing like casually insulting her boyfriend for no reason

user15026
7:07 PM
For some reason I find cake and pastry way easier than cookies.

@Ixrec maybe they finally corrected that. Making the primary character of the show do both stupid and mean things is not really a winning strategy...

@JimmyHoffa What's wrong with Clara?
Between her, Karen Gillan, and Billie Piper, the Doctor has been one lucky SOB.

the more critical DW fans I know also seem to really, really like the 2nd to last episode of this season, Heaven Sent, which has the Doctor all by himself and can be viewed entirely independently of the other episodes, so maybe that'd be of interest to you (here is one of those fan's spoiler-free reviews of it)

@Ampt you're forgetting Freema Agyeman who BTW you can appreciate in Sense 8 on netflix...

@JimmyHoffa honestly her character development was just kinda meh

7:10 PM
@Ampt I'm a superhuge Karen Gillan fanboy.

@ThomasOwens who isn't?

She was good in...uh...that show with John Cho that got cancelled. She sang a version of Sia's Chandelier and I fanboyed hard.

I even watched that stupid horror movie with her in it

IMO she was spectacular in Doctor Who and has elsewhere rather failed...
@Ampt that was awful

Yeah, but Karen Gillan

7:12 PM
@Ampt I dont know who that is

@enderland do you watch Dr. Who?

No

Google her :)

What else was she in besides Doctor Who and that show with John Cho?

7:13 PM
That really bad horror movie
@JimmyHoffa Ok, I deserved that one.

hmm

user114359
@JimmyHoffa that would make more sense if cats liked water.

@JimmyHoffa wow

@enderland Friday.

7:24 PM
meowday?

mmm Karen Gillian

what was I doing just now

fixing our TFS server?

user114359
Guys, tomorrow is Caturday.

user114359
Unless you're between China and the date line, then I guess it currently is Caturday.

that was a memorable episode

@Telastyn oh please do this for me too; I'm tired of SVN. The tooling stinks.

@JimmyHoffa do that many places actually use SVN instead of a distributed system?

I think I'm going to suggest moving to Github enterprise

there are still lots of places that use SVN

7:44 PM
@enderland uhm, yes? There's enormous amounts of code still written in cobol being managed in CVS...

SVN is still fine for many projects

Software is typically a reflection of the era the organization began creating it.

user41796
@enderland It's reasonably well entrenched and works perfectly well for many projects. So why not?

@GlenH7 because it's kind of irritating.. that's why.

you must have a low threshold for irritation then
have you ever had to use something such as SourceSafe?

user41796
7:49 PM
@JimmyHoffa quit being so elitist.

user114359

@ScantRoger you voted to close too. — Snowman 20 secs ago

user114359
Arguing about topicality when five people agreed to close the question is similar to rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.

my company has had both git and SVN repos in use for a looooong time, and the one repo so big and central you could conceivably call it "the repo" is one of the one using SVN

lol

7:51 PM
we recently got github enterprise to replace our own proprietary git hosting
@Snowman well, it's also not even an issue of topicality, it's just an opinion poll

@Snowman gotta make the last photos look great
I feel that way when I edit a question clearly on the close--> delete train

user41796
@Snowman Looks like he was just trying throw that link back at you. Meh, whatever.

@whatsisname ... with what? "yes......" ?

user41796
@whatsisname WAT? => VTC as unclear.

user114359
7:55 PM
@Ixrec I disagree that it is an opinion poll. This is not subjective. I am sure I could look up in a SE textbook and find a definition of a feature. The problem is it is a trivial question where the answer is "here, I googled this for you."

Well, if he wants to somehow turn acceleration data into gyroscope readings, the answer is no
if he wants to fake it, thats a different story
either way its not clear

user114359
@GlenH7 I have thick skin, doesn't bother me. I just think the whole thread is silly.

user41796
Indeed it is

This would be much better if you edit to explain more what you want to do and why. Right now... it's not really clear what your intent here is. — enderland 25 secs ago

I'll happily accept that there are two valid readings of the question, one in which it is trivial and lacks research effort, another in which it is a hopelessly unanswerable opinion poll; which one is not terribly important as that will only decide whether it is downvoted into oblivion or closed into oblivion

user41796

@GlenH7 My "this could be a good question and the OP is likely to return" vibe is high on that one for some reason

@GlenH7 honestly my irritation is just our current setup disallows branching... living entirely in main is not my favorite feeling; feels like having no safety net :/

user41796
Oh blech

user41796
branching is your friend

git-svn?

user41796
and that's not like C++'s weird-as-all-get-out friend concept. Branching really is your friend.

Q: Maintain hundreds of customized branches over master branch

Fernando TanCurrently we have one master branch for our PHP application in a shared repository. We have more than 500 clients who are subscribers of our software, most of whom have some customization for different purposes, each in a separate branch. The customization could be a different text field name, a ...

until it's not :)

user41796
@enderland Just because someone is your friend doesn't mean you should take advantage of them and abuse the relationship. That's just not cool.

user114359
@GlenH7 friend isn't weird. Think of it as being similar to Java package-private visibility. It works differently, but serves the same purpose.

are you saying you can't have hundreds of friends and have good relationships with them all? and that you need a smaller, more manageable number of friends?

@Ixrec I've been thinking about doing just that, but when all of git only lives on my local; it doesn't make me feel a lot better... The whole thing is because I'm living in main without branch isolation, I check in less frequently because I don't want anything in source control that's not fairly solid and stable, but then I'm in fear of losing my drive... local git over SVN wouldn't help me with that fear

user114359
@enderland No, he's saying to be careful with C++ because your friends can see your privates.

user41796
8:11 PM
@Snowman When I did C++ work, I didn't do anything on a scale to where I would have needed it. Ergo it's been relegated to the weird bucket. :-) Pay my no heed.

user41796
@Snowman And at that point, you better be dang friendly...

@JimmyHoffa it wouldn't? local branches and stashes are a big deal for me, it means I can commit what I'm doing in one branch and go do something else for a while without any risk of them getting tangled (or me having to do the equivalent of what I just said manually with Windows Explorer)
though I've never tried git-svn personally, I have enough tools getting in my way as it is I'm in no hurry to add more

@Ixrec I'm not concerned about tangling - for me it's all about wanting to have backup in case I come in one morning and my local drive bit dumped all over my desk.. If I haven't pushed my local work in a week or 2 that's a lot to recreate..

ah, well then you need...dropbox?

user41796
@ThomasOwens - Thanks for the delete hammer

8:13 PM
Anytime.

@Ixrec yeah, because putting my company's source code in drop box is a great idea :P This is what source control is for, but I can't push to it often because we don't have an "unstable" branch

yeah I don't know what the real solution is to that

any pushes I make go straight to main and if a release is needed tomorrow well... it better not have big bugs..

@GlenH7 because it's kind of irritating.. that's why.

@Ixrec branches. That's all. It's what I've done for years and most places do

8:13 PM
at least you aren't arguing that SVN is good :)

SVN's fine

Booooo
your opinion is bad and you should feel bad

in fact for my non-code projects it's the best choice

user41796
SVN's fine. It's just another tool that serves a purpose. It's not the end all be all, but no tool is

8:14 PM
the added complexity of git is only a net win in coding, because coding is weird

8:16 PM
incidentally, the "non-coding projects" I'm referring to are fan translations where the progress is strictly linear and most of the people that fiddle with the scripts after me are not programmers and thus being a simpler tool is a big win

@GlenH7 dear work, why you do dis

I'll argue SVN is good

I'd say SVN is good up to the point where frequent branching becomes useful
then you need a tool that does branching better

it's more the merging thats the issue than the branching

technicalities

8:19 PM
either way git is better

git is better for some projects

@whatsisname merging is a fact of branching unless you're just doing the weirdest branching behaviour I've ever seen

s/some/all/g

and worse for others
@Ampt: only in your world

git is better when the model of every developer making feature branches which get merged into master is the most straightforward way to let everyone on the team work together in parallel without killing each other

8:20 PM
@whatsisname s/your/every/g
I can do this all day you trashcan dwelling heathen!

lol

hehe :)
what, in your opinion, is a project that benefits from SVN?
I can't think of much outside government work

user41796
@Ampt A project that needs to check in large binaries

@Ampt: anything that isn't a purely software project, the benefits of git go away

8:22 PM
I gave an example earlier, though "projects that don't contain code" probably isn't the sort of example you're looking for

@GlenH7 and SVN is better at that?

you can't branch and merge electrical schematics and mechanical models

user41796
actually, yes

I've heard lots of large binary files is another case

user41796
I'm not saying it's a great use of a VCS, but it's one case where git's approach burns it

8:23 PM
@GlenH7 this is an old myth based on not doing shallow branches - resolved.

user41796
They're just tools. Treating tools with fanatical adherence doesn't really benefit anyone.

So when you want a VCS to not act like a VCS, svn is better :P

@whatsisname so basically when you need to "lock" a file?

SVN handles having a huge repo with a lot of different projects much better

@whatsisname you can if they're structured right :D

8:24 PM
@enderland: sort of

@GlenH7 shallow branches is another layer of complexity though; I'd rather avoid it if it's not necessary
oddly enough our mega-repo at work is so big as to essentially require shallow checkouts and shallow branching for just about everything, and none of our git repos do

@Ampt: I know you might be just trolling me, but but "structuring it right" requires a significant amount of wetware work that git and any other technical solution has no answer for today

I also have no idea if electrical engineers would have any interest in "branching" and "merging" their schematics
that may be a totally useless workflow for them

@GlenH7 having no adherence to any sense of quality or rules however is why lots of places can't have nice things

@whatsisname Lets say you have a CAD file of a building. If two different architects work on two different floors, why shouldn't they be able to be branched and merged?

8:26 PM
@JimmyHoffa that was one heck of an equivocation

the answer is they should be able to be. So it's a matter of structuring the data in such a way that it's easy for git to understand that these two things happened in different parts of the repo

@Ampt the real question is, would there be any use in branching and merging any more complicated and nuanced than that; the simple first vs second floor example is trivally done via some form of copy paste

things like binary blobs don't store well in a VCS because changing one part changes the entire file structure

a case where merging is non-trivial would be if, say, one guy redid all the wiring and another guy repositioned all the bathrooms
but would any merge tool really help with that?

8:27 PM
@Ampt: structuring that data to make that possible requires a huge amount of effort on behalf of the building engineers, as well as on behalf of the tool to recognize what's fixed and what isnt

@Ixrec likely no, it wouldn't other than pointing out they maybe conflicted

exactly

but it's better than the current solution which is emailing the latest around the office

oh yes, SVN's better than nothing for almost any collaborative work

and it's not really the merging tools job to understand why the conflict happened

8:29 PM
it's going from SVN to a more complex tool that requires some justification imo

just that it did

software doesn't have to live in the physical world, so git can i.e. cut/copy/paste to its hearts content to make merges happen

and to alert the user that it didn't go well

making git intelligent enough to know how to move pipes and cables around is orders of magnitude more different

it's going to try it's best to resolve, but it doesn't always get it right (or in SVN's case, ever)

8:29 PM
at that point it wouldn't really be git anymore

Then it would be revit
(which actually has that ability)
but I got to go play air hockey
be back in a bit

Almost nothing runs Google's stock Android.
Nexus devices, mostly.

user41796

8:32 PM
Maybe a few others. Honestly, I do like what Samsung has done in TouchWiz. It's not bad.

user41796
VZW is throwing some significant incentives to upgrade. But I don't like running anything other than stock android

Is it rootable?
You can always put stock Android or Cyanogen on it.

@GlenH7 republic wireless... !!

user41796
@ThomasOwens An evolution of their proprietary DB / CMS for small businesses

8:39 PM
@GlenH7 Intuit has a DB/CMS? I thought they just made QUickBooks and Quicken and TurboTax, and then bought Mint.

@Ampt: have you ever used their revision control tool?

user41796
@ThomasOwens what do you think backs quickbooks and quicken?

I haven't, but I have used PTCs and it's a disgrace and I've heard autodesks is similar

@GlenH7 I dunno...some kind of SQL database.

user41796
No, proprietary DB / CMS. Those two products have been around long before SQL DBs have been small enough to integrate into a product like theirs

8:40 PM
and those are from companies specializing in those fields
Altium at least had the good sense to just say "fuck it" and built in SVN support

Hmm. I need to get an Exception out of a SwingWorker.
The doInBackground() may throw an exception. I need the caller to get that exception.

@whatsisname who's revision control? Revit?

whatever autodesk uses for Revit

No I haven't

and I'd bet you $100 it doesn't do any sort of branch merge functionality of any kind
and is just a CVS grade revision control and costs $500

8:48 PM
Do you guys want a really sweet version control system? Go check out ClearCase.

@ThomasOwens oh shut it you

@whatsisname the proprietary VCS in the app I use is horrible

@whatsisname IDK, let me ask real quick

and I'm sure costs a lot of money too

it's certainly theoretically possible but it is a huge hassle, but it's not a hassle in software

JonnJust read the question about the Big Rewrites and I remembered a question that I've been wanting answered myself. what a mess

merging makes more sense if your data can be "merged" meaningfully

and furthermore, a lot of times that's more easily solved by just doing things in multiple files and telling each other "you work on this and I'll work on that"
and then at that point you just use SVN and everything is the cats whiskers
