They are a bunch of dot files and folders
I had two backups almost identical.
I had a backup of home. but after i reinstalled my Ubuntu, i didn't restore it but also didn't delete it
When I copied, I forgot to copy the hidden folders and I lost it.
I haven't restored it either.
i extracted it to a dir and look at that folder if i need anything from old
almost same
the backup lives in my home
If all of them are hidden folders, i wouldn't think about them
15:02
i remember copying the dot files of tomboy, gtg and task because they had data i wanted.
not sure about the rest.
not sure whether i would need them or not
I would save, .theme, .fonts, and would delete them
@jokerdino save them for a month. then you can decide what to do
well, i have already deleted them.
now wondering whether i should try recovering it
this is what happened:
i had a full backup including the dot files inside folder1/folder2/full backup
i then tried to copy the content one folder up. and forgot about dot files
and then deleted the full backup
and then realized i missed the dot files
hmm.. that is a problem
if you already haven't write anything big in your home and have a feeling that some files may be needed in future, you can consider recovery
15:06
yeah
i am gonna use photorec?
I heard of it.. many ppl recommend it and says "It's execellent"..
but, I have very little experience with it
I only tried to recover some deleted .deb files from USB drive, and ...
sorry... the result wasn't good
it gave me some .deb files with huge size
i used foremost for recovering from usb
but, this might happened because of usb drive
the result may be different on an extX partition
15:10
very well.
wait a second
very well on ext4?
i have a full backup on my usb drive
Oh.. very good then :)
lol it's all there \o/
\o/
need some uptick
For the possible close voters: The question isn't that unclear (IMO). He was asking whether he needs installing something like DirectX (as required in Windows) before playing games on WINE. — Olive Twist 28 secs ago

good job editing the question.
thank you
regarding CCSM gray out. if you deselect auto plugin sorting, it happens that way
Nice! Answer it @jokerdino
you can do it.
i'll upvote it
you should answer
15:19
no, i don't have good internet connection for screenshots.
Ok, then.
and i am feeling pretty tired and sleepy
I've postponed an assignment here
ouch
maybe you should get back to work.
thank you.. i'll after finishing it

ok then

Q: GUI not showing after installation of 8.04 on virtual machine

user1008497I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 on VMware Workstation, but it's stuck after installation. Here's the image of phase that i am stuck in Could someone instruct me on what to do next? I am confused.

@jrg the good news is, once I get it working...
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
jrg
jrg
:)
what kind of laptop is it?
17:31
A Toshiba p300 16V it seems
can hold two hard drives, just like this one
has a nice optical drive (no bluray, I don't think)
But as for the major specs I can't tell yet

@wisemonkey hi
how r u doing today?
I'm cool
good looks like u got new laptop
technically, it's not new
it's second hand
jrg
jrg
17:50
but its new to you
I got it because it was lying around somewhere where I was working :P
@jrg well yes :D
jrg
jrg
openvas.org down for everyone?
I'm excited - just I want it to turn on
you work now too?
@Joshua always - I'm freelance
17:51
well i know that...
@jrg yes it is down for me
jrg
jrg
lovely.
lol yea I pick up plenty of computers from school and use them as servers :P
@RolandTaylor I like Toshiba, they make durable machines...
@Joshua indeed!
The first toshiba I ever used was hot - but it was sturdy
it was a beast
@Joshua o.O I differ that opinion
17:53
@RolandTaylor they are hot...
@wisemonkey nobody asked you :=P
BTW, I have another laptop too - a compaq evo400c (Pentium 3!) with 256GB of RAM - no optical drive, and 11GB HDD
aww man :-/
I'll go to my corner
Gonna put Lubuntu on it, or maybe Ubuntu minimal - and use it as either a server or a portable for writing notes down
@RolandTaylor you have Windows 98 on that laptop?
@Joshua 2000
17:54
ahh
jrg
jrg
Ok, so it's not quite a dinosaur.
it's getting there though. ;)
It had Linux on it once IIRC
My hard drive on my work computer is failing...
I used to use it before some years ago, then it went back to the owner, now it's mine :D
@Joshua :(
oh :S
jrg
jrg
@Joshua youch
it's only got what, 2200000000 bad sectors on it, right? That means it will perform fine for another 45 seconds.
17:56
I was able to make an image with acronis though...
So I should be able to get a new hard drive and restore the image...
Have to say though... this was pretty awesome...
Good evening everyone

@Joshua you, some random dude trying to make a gangsign (and failing epicly at it I might add), and your wife?
@jrg lol it is Scott Stapp from Creed...
jrg

Oh shush @RolandTaylor
let a guy ask a question.
Scott Alan Stapp (born Anthony Scott Flippen ; August 8, 1973) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist. He is also the lead vocalist and lyricist of the rock band Creed, of which he is a founding member. His debut solo album, The Great Divide, was released in 2005. A second album, Between Lust and Love, is currently in production. Despite various criticisms and controversies, Stapp is recognized as one of the most successful artists of the modern rock era and has won several accolades, including a Grammy Award for Creed's song "With Arms Wide Open" and numerous ...
Do you have a pass to see Mr. Jrg?
Creed is an American rock band, formed in 1995 in Tallahassee, Florida. The band consists of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist and vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. Creed released two studio albums, My Own Prison in 1997 and Human Clay in 1999, before Marshall left the band in 2000 to be replaced by touring bassist Brett Hestla. The band's third record, Weathered, was released in 2001 with Mark Tremonti handling bass before the band disbanded in 2004 due to increasing tension between members. Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshall went on to found Al...

@jrg thanks! Its your answer to this question: askubuntu.com/questions/149821/… I was wondering, does deleting the HP_Tools partition have any downsides, as in if I don't put it back in place will the HP G62 stop booting up properly/booting into windows?
@RolandTaylor oh you joker ;)
jrg
jrg
@Oyibo the only downside is covered in the post, which is that if you need to reinstall windows for some reason, you'll need to scrouge around for those yourself/download from the link in the answer.
@Oyibo pretty sure the HP_Tools is your recovery parition... so if you ever want to restore Windows again, you should probably leave it there... unless you used the utility to put it on cd/dvd...
jrg
jrg
thats the only downside.
(that i've found over the past year since I did that)
@jrg You heard we were building an IRC bot?
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison yeah, i heard it was getting off my unoperable server. ;P
jrg
jrg
oh, this is different.
@jrg ah yes I just preferred to ask you to get a good idea of the risks seeing as I'm installing Ubuntu for a friend :)
@jrg Just started it last night.
@Joshua there's HP_Tools and HP Recovery so I wasn't sure about it
jrg
jrg
@Oyibo those are the risks. I've been running this way for a year, my little sister (13) is also running her laptop this way, it works pretty well from what I can tell.
18:09
@Oyibo oh then it must be HP_recovery that is your recovery partition. Couldn't remember for sure...
But if you want to be 100% safe use the utility that allows you to put it on cd/DVD
@jrg seeing as this isn't my laptop I'm doing this on, I'd rather be cautious, especially seeing as I've never reinstalled a HP_Tools partition, its relatively straight-forward from what I read in the links you posted.
@Joshua yes I'll do so to prevent any problems from arising ;)
jrg
jrg
@Oyibo i haven't either, but it seems to straightforward from both what the links say, and from how i'd go about doing it even if I hadn't read the docs.
@jrg So you managed to do so without deleting and reinstalling it? Did I missread something? Or do you mean that you saved it on a CD/DVD?
jrg
jrg
I saved it to a CD/DVD.

@RolandTaylor lol. my wife just saw our conversation about shaking Stapp's hand...

Q: How should we deal with bounty questions that are confirmed bugs?

fossfreedomThis question is with reference to this bounty question: How do I theme the Sound Menu playback buttons? Hi all

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yup
i'm waiting for my install to finish, and then i'll see if it touches any non-archive.ubuntu.com repos.
Yeah, i'm guessing it's service configuration guis mostly. (read as system-config-* from redhat, but for ubu)
jrg
jrg
it's not done yet, but i see a ppa and translations from archive.zentyal.org.
looks pretty stockish to me.
The point that concerns me is bait questions that become an advertising method. "How do I configure XYZ service with Zentyal?" -- "With Zentyal(link) it's SO much easier than with regular stuff. Just click these five buttons and blamo--you're done. If you have any questions, purchase a support plan and check with our paid support personnel." -- No wait... shuts up b/c he just drew a parallel without meaning to

Q: Do we count Zentyal as a on-topic Ubuntu derivative?

jrgI have encountered a vergence in the Ubuntu derivative landscape, Zentyal! So basically, my question is this: Because the zentyal packages are in the Ubuntu Archives, and because they have a partnership with Canonical about this stuff, do we count them as off-topic or on-topic?

20:13
Is a question about installing Ubuntu on a PS2 on-topic?
jrg
jrg
ok, they ship their own samba4, iptables and openldap. shipping stuff that low level = not ok.
@MichaelMrozek ummm... that sounds incredibly localized, but yeah it'd be on-topic.

@MichaelMrozek i think so, but if it's not - it certainly gets epic points for most awesome OT question in recent memory

@GeorgeEdison You're in the wrong namespace

@MichaelMrozek Are you sure? I'm not using #stackirc because I'm testing - I'm using it because that is also the official room for discussing the project.

Good morning!
@msPeachy hi
hello
@msPeachy finally someone!
What package do the recovery mode features belong to, for purposes of filing a bug?
It doesn't appear to be Linux...
and it's not a gang sign, it's the "rocker" sign here

22:22
@msPeachy Do you know what package it is? ---^
lol, nope
Hello my friend, we meet again It's been awhile, where should we begin?
Should I install Windows 8?
:-) Windows won't boot!
:-( Ubuntu won't boot, also.
@Joshua I don't know. Do you want to mess up your eyes and computer?
jrg
jrg
@Joshua only if you want to explode it afterwards... (i'm buying a 5-pack license for testing purposes)
@ObsessiveSSOℲ Yes! that is what I live for... messed up eyes and exploding computers @jrg
22:29

jrg
jrg
wow, windows 8 has improved a lot over the past year.
Is this menu in recovery mode of all recent Ubuntu versions?
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveSSOℲ yup
jrg
jrg
well, ok - not all of them, some of the menu items have changed over the past ~3 releases.
but yeah, the general idea is the same.
22:32
I am asking specifically about the network option.
jrg
jrg
oh, the network option. hm. yeah, i think it's been around
I am currently seeding the SE data dumps at 5Mbps.
(That's megabits, not megabytes, though)
@msPeachy sup?
@RolandTaylor i bet 0 A.D. would be epic on your new computer
@Joshua I hope so
but we won't know till I get it to turn on lol
jrg
jrg
22:37
@ObsessiveSSOℲ it says there are 4 seeders. that right?
@RolandTaylor gotta make breakfast be back when I can
I don;t think so.
jrg
jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: So OpenVAS is actually pretty cool.
Just wish i could run a scan from the CLI, I haven't figured out how to do that.
@msPeachy cool I'm going to grab food shortly myself
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveSSOℲ not bad, i'm getting 1.1 MiB/s down on the datadump.
22:55
@jrg .i believe it has a way to do it with NASL scripting (i also believe there's a snort plug-in that launches an openvas scan somewhere)
jrg
jrg
Ok, thanks. i'll go hunting for those.
can you tell i'm too cheap for nessus? ;P
nessus is still free, it just requires registration
jrg
jrg
only lets you do 30 scans.
crap...that changed
jrg
jrg
and i need something i can legally use at work
which i can't.

@jrg maybe nexpose? if it has a limited commercial version
jrg

they have a community version... wonder what that gives you
i haven't looked at community nexpose, only community metasploit

> The Nexpose Community Edition is a free, single-user vulnerability management solution specifically designed for very small organizations or individual use.
> Scanning capabilities for more than 32 IPs
@RolandTaylor why is it taking so long for you to turn on?
jrg
jrg
eehhhhhh... technically that's all I need for work, but work + my VM lab = more than 32.
@jrg I think one of the answers is already valuable...so I suppose we should keep it open. (I'm out of close votes for the day, so I wouldn't be VTC'ing it right now anyways.)
jrg
jrg
@EliahKagan yay for keeping it open.
@Joshua needs a new power cord
23:01
OHHHHH... yeah that would make it a bit harder then...
jrg
jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing requires keeping multiple VMs. I'm lazy. 'nuf said.
virtualbox lets you fork snapshots now. nuf said ;)
jrg
jrg
besides. learning the tools available in a default BT install will come in handy someday.
wait, wat
i did not know you could do that.
you can revert to a previous snapshot without losing a newer snapshot since about 2 versions ago
jrg
jrg
23:04
oh, i only started playing with VMs seriously about 2-3 months ago. guess i'll look into that more.
it's neat. don't try the "differencing disks" option. it sort of works, but can lead to unbootable VMs. just use snapshot forks
jrg
jrg
ok
also, had a decent day
jrg
jrg
i see. :)
there has to be a canonical question for this already:
