Someone else is celebrating Thanksgiving today?

Hi!

@GeorgeEdison Columbus Day...

Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492, as an official holiday. The event is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in Latin America, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, as Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity) in Argentina and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay. Anybody here with time to help me with a bug: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1060268

Morning \o/

@LuisAlvarado sounds like it's something not free-ing buffers right/leaking memory to me

the worst thing is, it affects so badly my system that after 2 to 5 hours the whole system locks and I need to reset my computer the hard way. Started around June and since then it has been a nightmare. I thought the 3.5/3.6 kernel with 12.10 would solve it but it didn't.

2:44 AM
:'( maybe someone with the card will be able to pin down where the leak is (or if it's even a leak). i'm really not sure how to run a driver under valgrind though (probably what they'll want you to do if my guess is right)

Q: Add Unix and Linux to the off topic menu

njallamSometimes I come across questions that I believe to be better suited on the Unix and Linux StackExchange site. E.g. PAM modules and RRadius authentication. When using the flag as off topic option, why can we not flag it to be sent to Unix and Linux?

I don't think we currently have enough (non-deleted) examples, and there's no progress on this question. So I'm voting to close this question as too localized. But if anyone has more to contribute, please go ahead (and then presumably other people will withhold their close-votes and this meta question will stay open for the discussion). — Eliah Kagan 5 mins ago

Q: Are questions about problems later revealed to be common hardware issues "too localized"?

Eliah KaganSometimes a user posts a question that they think has to do with Ubuntu, but it turns out to be a hardware problem. (And not one that can be worked around or troubleshooted by Ubuntu. There are, of course, many hardware problems, like failing disks, that can be troubleshooted and sometimes even w...

meta discussions are never too localized. Voting not to close.

@jokerdino Certainly. My intention is to put it to vote by the community, if the meta question should remain open. By way of clarification ...do you mean that no meta questions should be closed as too localized, or just that questions should not be closed as too localized (even if they have no answers)?

questions can be too localized but I believe discussions cannot be considered too localized.
It made sense when I first said it but not now. :P

7:29 AM
^that
what type of question should be tagged with ?
and why this question should not be closed as a dupe?

@OliveTwist Questions that are primarily about changeable settings, usually. At least that's what I think.

@EliahKagan thank you. I also thought as such

@OliveTwist The main bug reporting question is about reporting bugs against Ubuntu packages in general. Its answers wouldn't answer that question, and it's not clear anything that would answer that question would be an appropriate answer to the main bug reporting question.

thanks.. i got the point
I saw that, If a question is correctly tagged, the tags themselves give a very quick idea about the nature of the question. So, i always try to check whether tags are hinting at the question
BBL

@jokerdino As a policy, this makes some degree of sense to me, but are you sure there is a community consensus or rule about this? These eight meta questions are tagged and are closed as too localized, all by moderators:
Unless I'm missing something...you might want to post on meta (or if you prefer I do so, that's OK with me) about whether or not it's sometimes appropriate to close discussion questions on meta as too localized.

7:37 AM
Let me check if they are really discussions.
None of them are really discussions regarding the site, are they?

@jokerdino Unless we're thinking of different things when we think about what constitutes a discussion (or what it means to be about the site), it seems to me that -1-, -5-, and -6- are unambiguously discussion questions relating to Ask Ubuntu itself. -5- may not be a good example, though, since it looks like it should have been closed, just as off topic.

Re: Q1, lord of time wanted it deleted and Marco closed it, because it was mainly a rant. re:Q5, it was a bot that lived in chat and no one really liked. re:q6, IMO, it was a support question.
I might not make sense but that's just me.

Q: Upgrading lion and loosing Virtual Box

NewbenMy virtual box is not working since I have upgraded my lion OS. VT-x is being used by another hypervisor. (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE). VirtualBox can't operate in VMX root mode. Please close all other virtualization programs. (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE). So I found a forum thread here : https:...

Wait.. isn't he talking about nightly builds?

I love aptitude
it has a decent feature which is not available in any other package mgmt system

it is superior to apt-get
that's my opinion

it helps to get rid of the unmet dependency black hole

oh yes.
it also purges configuration files.
sudo aptitude purge '~c'

8:06 AM
niceee
i always considered aptitude superior but somewhere in the Internet i read something about it... (telling aptitude can now fully complement apt-get)
I strongly disagree with them

@jokerdino ppa:videolan/master-daily, which is mentioned in this answer, provides nightly builds, doesn't it?

@EliahKagan Looks like it does. Thanks!

@jokerdino @EliahKagan there is a nasty multiarch bug in aptitude fixed in 12.10 only: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aptitude/+bug/831768 hope they backport it.

Whose the first guy now?

On Stack Exchange sites in general, in cases I believe are clear-cut where I don't have enough reputation to reopen-vote, is it appropriate for me to custom-flag saying it should be reopened? Or should I always post on the site's meta instead, in that scenario?
This is the question I'm thinking of:

Q: Practicality of faster than light travel

Alexander HealyHow was a patent granted for a technology that violates basic physics? I apologize, I'm new to the site and thought I had linked to the patent. Patent number: 6025810 Filing date: Oct 2, 1997 Issue date: Feb 15, 2000 http://www.google.com/patents/US6025810?printsec=claims#v=onepage&q&f=...

It was extensively edited recently, and I strongly believe the new edit makes it clear and brings it in line with Ask Patent's FAQ.

I guess you are better off starting a meta thread.

Sorry, I should clarify.
As someone who is not the asker of the question, is it appropriate for me to flag it? A moderator wrote:
Once edited, this question can be 'flagged' to be reopened. — Robert Cartaino Oct 3 at 14:17
But I don't know if that applies to me, as I'm just some random guy. :-)

Well, since the OP doesn't have the minimum rep to flag, you should probably proceed in that case.

Q: How to make a string search inside files in a folder? (Utility name)
