12:03 PM
making one's own beer....

Can you answer this? Misused mke2fs and cannot boot into system http://askubuntu.com/q/185420?atw=1 #windows

wow, controversy over 12.10... I have indeed been away too long.

12:20 PM
"You should never use normal sudo to start graphical applications as root. You should use gksudo (kdesudo on Kubuntu) to run such programs."

that's right

jrg
12:37 PM
oh, then i've been doing it wrong for the past two years. ducks

lol

jrg
(joking. but I know people who are like that.)

would it be a different when using gksu ? coz its run with root?

jrg
gksu is a synonym for gksudo iirc. and it's still run with root
@RolandTaylor: Man, 10.04 with a plethora of VMs flies. I'm going to need to figure out how to use the debian installer so I can keep doing this in a year. :p

erm like open normal window.. like firefox... we launch as normal user we dont need root passwd rite? so if i run gksu firefox & - install some addons, can normal user use that addons too?

jrg
12:49 PM
yes and no

ahaaaa

jrg
you're correct that we don't need a password to run firefox - but if we run gksu firefox and install addons, etc, it is only for root.
but thats more of a firefox thing than a root thing

if you run sudo firefox, all cache will be owned by root ;)

jrg
also, ubuntu doesn't have a root password - they do some cool stuff with /etc/sudoers and the 'admin' group.

i see... let say im open like this... gksu gedit - i put some conky script and save... then i make as startup application... would normal user can see the conky?

jrg
12:53 PM
yes

i would think so

jrg
but thats because the login item is run as the normal user, not the root user. :P
(Yeah, i know this is confusing. you're making me think about this too. :P)

what about edit? do i need to run gksu gedit ~/.conky to edit as normal user?

jrg
nope

why are you using gksu for that btw?

jrg
12:54 PM
yeah, why

wassup dawgs
/me acting down with the kids

no i just want to understand more about using gksu instead of double click gedit n edit

gksu is just sudo for graphical apps
like sudo nano but gksu gedit

ermm but.. okey let me test :D
aikkk

is Olive == Anwar?

1:05 PM
Yeah?
It took you this long lol?

lol
never occurred to me
i just figured it out because I had bookmarked answar's profile, just in case I need to cast vote, then it showed Olive Twist

O_o
smart !

I have 5 profiles bookmarked for voting

I see

that is if I still have votes left after reviewing

1:08 PM
;D

I want to consume 39 votes a day

don't consume too much

also because your answer or some other friends answer might not show up in the review so I have to go to their profiles

jrg
jrg to Bruno and Marco, I seem to have discovered a massive sockpuppet ring, over. ;)

I am outta here

1:10 PM
lol

good ... time to ban the joker...
2

yeah, that might actually do me good ;p

jrg
you'd get work done?

@jrg yippies

jrg
Something I've always wanted to do: Suspend a moderator, and find out if he can unsuspend himself.

1:11 PM
there is a bigger brighter world out there instead of being stuck googled eyed to your screen - trust me.

jrg
I think that'd break the system though...

@fossfreedom i know i know
you might also want to suspend Eliah. ;p
I would have recommended izx but he seems a bit inactive atm.

why suspend?

we are part of the massively addicted to AU group.
i think you also might like a timeout ;)

jrg
Ask Ubuntu Users anonymous.

1:14 PM
oh later, I will hibernate

jrg
the only requirement for joining: Change your gravatar to something else, we can't have people knowing each other. ;P

@msPeachy have a good sleep
@jrg lol if we can also mask the rep, I would totally be a random anon

@jokerdino not yet

oh

I meant I will sleep early tonight, later but not right now

1:17 PM
good thing you got enough posts to spend your votes on every day. or else, we would be in a big voting fraud ring ;p

I usually upvote questions, then look for accepted answers with 0 votes

since you already max out your votes, i don't have any more suggestions.

there are too many posts on the First Posts review

i think you and a couple of others are doing a great job

@jokerdino haven't yet,
I only vote 29 so far

1:20 PM
well, you would in some time
i mean today

yes, but you have suggestions or something?

i realized they are part of 10k tools
the anonymous feedback list

oh
what does it do?

We have a lot of Q&A sites in the Stack Exchange network now. 84 at the current moment. That’s … a lot of Q&A sites. But most people* don’t find us by browsing the site directory; they find us by encountering a Stack Exchange page in their web search results.

So that may lead you to wonder: what are the most freqently found questions on a given Stack Exchange Q&A site? In other words, the “Greatest Hits” of that particular topic.

(Trivia: did you know that the Eagles’ Greatest Hits doesn’t include their most famous song?) …

> I so non techy it's not true.

1:23 PM
i am so non techy so it is true

just quoting from a post on review now, he's funny

@jokerdino, is it possible to make a stack exchange on your own computer?

@LnxSlck you want to setup a site for yourself?

like installing apache or whatever and run a site just like AU from you own computer?
@jok

i don't think that's possible. but i think there are open source alternatives for stack exchange

1:24 PM
... think that would be a very lonely site asking and answering your own questions...

i think he wants the data dump and set up the site in case AU goes down
you know.. like backing up the internet
4

backing up the internet - need a bigger hard-disk.

Heck, I don't think I have enough spare disk space for the AU datadump

lol i am removing duplication due to backups right now

jrg
1:28 PM
between my VMs, my ISO collection, my 10GB of ruby code, my MP3s, yeah i don't have space

i would buy a 1TB portable HD just because I can.

jrg
i've got 500GB in external stuff, plus about ~200 in cloud.

200GB on cloud?
oh my

jrg
long story, but yes

scam dropbox

jrg
1:33 PM
thats 15GB of it.
the rest of it is in 5GB chunks around the internet, and then there is a 50GB s3 bucket somewhere.

wow

@jrg I actually have the latest publicly-available data dump...

@ObsessiveSSOℲ Maybe you can download the absolute latest over the API.

@jokerdino Aren't there limits to API use?

It won't take more than a couple of hours

jrg
1:38 PM
@ObsessiveSSOℲ how big is it?

the whole of SE dump is about 4.2 GB

jrg
oh.
i thought it'd be larger

@jrg 85.3 MB while 7z'd.

and the bulk is from SO.

Remeber, it's text, and compressed...
My total for the entire datadump is 7.52, compressed.

jrg
1:39 PM
was forgetting they don't make the images available
(from the stack imgur)
ok, time to download that

yeah you get the link i guess

jrg
do they make 10K deleted things available?

i don't think so

jrg
probably, it's the full datadump

@jrg No, but if it was available at the time of the previous datadump, it is in the old one.

jrg
1:41 PM
i'll download and check for the "is mark shuttleworth on crack" one. :D

wait what?

@jrg Was there really something like that?
‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽

jrg
yeah, that was a good one. THEM WERE THE DAYS. WHEN THE UNITY HATERS WERE STRONG.
when every single post was a massive troll-oh wait that hasn't changed.

it won't in the near future

jrg
yeah, because i'll just be deleting anything that moves. ;)

1:43 PM
Funny, I was just considering writing a post called "is Canonical good for Ubuntu?"

heh
@RolandTaylor I was thinking it is time they became a NPO

jrg
august dump is the latest, right?

like earlier today

@jokerdino yeah

@jrg I thought it was June 27

1:44 PM
@msPeachy hey

I might have missed it on data.SE

jrg
or is that the wrong place?

or Data.SE is busted

jrg
1:45 PM
since waffles left data.se has been so boring.

Magnet URL for transmission---^

jrg
on the other hand, since he left we can now have that nifty stuff in our sites.

@RolandTaylor hi

I prefer MySQL over MS SQL Server 2008.

jrg
looks like data.se hasn't been updated in a long time

1:46 PM
well, torrents are blocked here.

SE uses the latter...

jrg
@jokerdino: I could make it available on s3 or something if you want.
then you can just wget it/download via chrome.

i don't what i would do with it but heck. why not?
@jrg that sounds right.
i'll axel or aria2c it

Neverball is a fun game.

jrg
ok, so the ETA on mine is going to be a few days, my debian ISO collection recently suffered some casualties so I'm re-grabbing the CD images.

1:51 PM
@jrg Have you abandoned the idea of VM testing images?

jrg
@ObsessiveSSOℲ yes, but not from choice. my VM got corrupted.

Ay! That ping startled me, causing me to lose my balance from a ledge 1/64 times the diameter of the neverball.

jrg
you mean your chair?

I don't know what to say..

No. In Neverball, which I am playing right now, using my nVidia card.

jrg
1:54 PM
oh, a videogame

Open-source, and available at neverball.org
Wasting my time on Columbus day...

is due to expire.
9:54 is kind of arbitrary...

jrg
Is that what today is? I'm just wasting time since I'm sick. :P

Ah.
I hope you feel better.

jrg
nice to know someone cares. ;)

Anyone have a high-performance computer whose time they want to donate to BOINC?

1:58 PM
My translation team membership is expiring.

jrg
i wish I had a HPCC. but i'm not sure what i'd do with it, so I don't.

I wish I had a HPLC

Just join BOINC with your existing machine. There's a team, called Ask Ubuntu users.

jrg
@jokerdino: high performance liquid chromatography...?

Yes that o.O

jrg
2:01 PM
didn't know you were into that stuff.

I have to clean the house. I'll just dictate to my laptop while cleaning.

jrg
In which case, the next thing you say will be: "We call this meeting to trans meaty soar..."

@msPeachy oh hai

@jrg well, it is part of my analytical chem syllabus

This stupid laptop which runs only Windows 7 right now due to severe graphics issues with its AMD A4 APU doesn't understand B O I N C.

2:05 PM
You are on Win 7?!

Unfortunately. It's my only actually portable laptop, and its AMD A4 APU hates Ubuntu. No graphics, with or without flgrx.

Well, that's not a big crime. Carry on.

@RolandTaylor you're still fiction?

Anyone know how to get the two ATI Radeon 6480G GPU's working properly? I can't boot, with or without nomodeset and if I try to use fallback graphics, it doesn't want to boot at all.

@msPeachy yesh, always :D

2:11 PM
:P

wow nice

First Posts is getting smaller and smaller

it is around 1k here

it used to be 1k plus

oh it is?

@ObsessiveSSOℲ He will find you and he will bludgeon you.
brb

@ObsessiveSSOℲ how did you get the inverted F?

Crap. He knows my IP address.
Google: flip text

okay, read you meta posts about the missing dot on the review status thingy

2:16 PM
> Okay so whats happened is I came upstairs and saw my computer running Windows 7 with a blue screen

i like reading stories! Moar stories.

@msPeachy Did you like my posts about a plurals bugs?

@ObsessiveSSOℲ on meta.so?

@jokerdino lol, I get all that on review, it's fun reading posts sometimes.
@ObsessiveSSOℲ link

2:21 PM
@msPeachy haha

Q: Missing period in explanation about review queue badges

ObsessiveSSOℲWhen mousing over the badge progress in a review queue, one gets the following explanation: These badges are awarded once per review queue which is missing a period. Can someone fix this admittedly trivial problem? Look at the bottom line of text.

i like how they personalize their questions so much.
You got to mention you got OCD.

Q: I lost 15 reputation and I can't find any records of why

jokerdinoI note that since the Recent Reputation History Changes, the reputation changes are updated immediately and with more details. But, today, at one point of time, my reputation on Ask Ubuntu just dropped from 6395 to 6380. I tried looking into the cause but I don't see anything different. No accept...

here's a good one: Complicated.. Instal hang on black screen similar to CMD

yeah that makes too much sense.

@jokerdino complicated, it a facebook status

2:23 PM
heh

@ObsessiveSSOℲ okay done
@jokerdino did you get it back?

No. But I got to know the reason.
I also got three upvotes (as compensation?) around that time from an anon user.

maybe that was me
lol

i don't think it was you
it was pretty old stuff

yeah I wasn't here then

2:29 PM
lol funny you two upvoted that ;p

lol, me and obs

i guess

well, it's like automatic to me, if its on meta and its from you, I'd just click on upvote

O_o

I answered a post on meta that was closed as a duplicate, but the main question to which it was duped to doesn't have an answer, does that mean, will my answer be removed?

2:32 PM
which meta was it?

so

good evening

if it is on meta.AU, i don't think so. i am not too sure about meta.so.

@OliveTwist Morning.

@OliveTwist you tricked me

2:33 PM
I think, we consider this as on-topic askubuntu.com/q/197819/61218
@msPeachy sshh

@msPeachy probably not

@jokerdino oh okay,
@OliveTwist good evening to you too

i'll just ask on meta.so chat for a merge.

@ObsessiveSSOℲ good morning

@jokerdino well, thank you

2:35 PM
@OliveTwist good day

How did you write that FOSS?

@msPeachy i'll see what they respond and let you know

well, its just a trivial question anyway

@jokerdino good evening
Are we ready for 12.10 fully (with these kinds of questions)?

Q: How To keep web apps running in messaging menu?

kmassadaUbuntu 12.10 introduced all sort of web apps, and some of them get added to the messaging menu. My question however is the following. These web apps must remain open in a tab, for the messaging menu to keep count of your unread messages. Is there a way to keep the count going, even with the ta...

don't close. it is a decent question

2:39 PM

thank you both
today I saw some of the questions have "too localized" votes, but I didn't fully understand why?
the questions may have been closed already

i probably ignored it.

good night friends

good night

2:43 PM

@OliveTwist you tricked me
how ?

by changing your name from Anwar.

2:46 PM
no. i mean how she figured that out?
did you help her?

She had a bookmark.
And then asked me for confirmation.

oh
bookmark of question i guess

bookmark of your profile.

Oh
I've a bookmark of your profile ;P

:O
What would that be?

2:48 PM
Answer may come later or never. :P
but, don't worry.
no bad intentions

Just curious.
Hah, you will beat me in a matter of time.
that was just a joke anyway.
you are not what?

i am not fully confident about that
...silence..

@OliveTwist oh okay
but you will.

hi @OliveTwist

you know what? @jokerdino

2:57 PM

I thought, you became angry for my previous comment
(for the silence)

no i wasn't. i was wondering if i should recover my deleted backup or forget about it

@smartboyhw hi
how are you?
@jokerdino backup of your whole partition or only home?
