ih
@izx Have you had a chance to look at my question?
izx
izx
@Mitch Sorry, which one would that be?
@jokerdino, so tell me, why the sudden debian-with-GUI lust?
@izx this one
1
Q: Can't login when switching to TTY1

MitchI'm running Ubuntu 12.04. When I switch to the first text terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F1, I'm presented with a prompt that asks for user name and password. When I input the user name and password, I get login incorrect. I'm typing the right user name and password. What could be the problem? Here...

@izx got bored with ubuntu
good day all
09:14
hi
izx
izx
@jokerdino Good. Did wireless finally work?
@izx nope
still in a mess
> you'd copy /boot/*$(uname -r)* into /chroot/boot/, and the whole /lib/modules/$(uname -r) tree into /chroot/lib/modules/
no idea what that means
izx
izx
it means you copy the ubuntu kernel/kernel modules into debian
and pray it works
actually, i want to install kernel backport
they said the driver works
so looking for sources.list
izx
izx
umm
why install backported kernel
when you're going to install sid anyway
09:18
because the driver is in 3.2?
izx
izx
You have 4G of mem, right?
yeah.
izx
izx
why not just play with debian in a VM first?
FFS :P
:P
yeah; it's not worth others' time
Bounty offered: Is there something similar to the Android AppDrawer/App Launcher? http://askubuntu.com/q/43093?atw=1 #softwarerecommendation
izx
izx
09:25
@jokerdino No, just that your network situation is...exotic
@izx lol installing 3.2 now
time to reboot
izx
izx
good night and good luck ;)
@izx good night
izx
izx
09:45
@jokerdino: idea: why not download a wheezy daily iso somewhere, boot into Debian, mount the ISo and use its repos to upgrade?
@izx not a bad idea.
for a second, i thought a new vamp joined our room o.O
actually, new vamp.
brb
hi and bye @eCleopatra
brb
10:01
screw it. debian is not worth my time
@izx i think i should just download a wheezy iso and install over squeeze
eh, am I the only one to see eCleopatra come to our chat room? Or am I hallucinating?
guys, great news. wireless working now!
@Mitch I tried running wubi.exe this morning and it works. I'm not entirely sure what I did though.
The only system change I made since yesterday was reinstalling all my Java binaries.
Glad that it works..
10:35
why is it that NO good hardware runs linux!
asus zenbook has too many problems to buy
my asus slider was an awesome idea but still cant get the slideout keyboard working
no 8 hour tablets are running ubuntu right yet
no dual core
no tegra3
no ultrabooks
why is Linux support for good hardware so slow
by the time I can run linux on any of these devices there's already gonna be a new mouthwatering device out there , i wont be able to buy
I hate windows and mac but they run the best hardware
and android is a pathetic waist of good hardware
android is a cellphone OS ;)
also, as I keep saying. Hardware supports windows and OS X. Linux has to support hardware
3
@JourneymanGeek, yes it is and it is a pathetic waist of good hardware on tablets
/me currently sticks to windows for for portable computing, has a smartphone, and runs his servers on linux ;)
my sl101 tablet is an awesome peice of hard ware that will only run android
if I could get linux on it it would be so freeking awesome
@JourneymanGeek, smartphone is ? android?
ya
lovely little thing. Mainly gets used to play angry birds, and misuse the sensors for things the manufacturer never imagined they'd be used for.
I run one of these en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_V and one of these thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X220 fairly stock (so, android and windows). I just SSH into my linux boxen as needed
10:42
angry birds fanatic..
hm i can probably ssh from my phone xD
i want to make a company that all it does all day is make linux work on new devices... we would make our money on hosting linux events and specific support for updates etc
i just wanna see windows die!!!!!
@JoshuaRobison lol good luck
Or go with a company that actually supports linux
10:44
dell is pretty decent
thinkpad is great
system76 the BOMB
the apple ipad at least is pathetic enough that I don't care if it runs only ios
@jokerdino, system 76 hardware is outdated
@JoshuaRobison like?
they have no good tablets or ultrabooks
wait, you want a tablet?
tablet or ultrabook that runs linux
8hours battery life please
dual core please
1gig memory please
10:46
oh ;/
at least
yea exactly
only android right
android tablet probably
yeah. android
or maybe the kde tablet?
waist
the kde tablet is single core
forgot its name
italian name
10:47
spark
@JoshuaRobison ok fail too
the name was changed
vivaldi
its now called... right
I wish they had a little better hardware
I would not mind paying at this point
you know what, just get a ipad
ipad cant run linux
i cant run gimp
10:49
linux? why??
oh gimp.
i cant run inkscape... i am a graphic designer
and web designer
can't do any of that on ipad
a guy who is dying to use linux. i respecdt you
its a toy and a waist
i love linux
i cant stand using anything else
so boring
my eyes start bleeding with boredom
:/
ok. anyway. i got to go. dinner time here
your dinner over yet?
yes dinner time here too
10:51
right. you live in GMT+9?
you too? im in japan
im in singapore. gmt+8
nice
singapore :D ive heard great things about that country
wish I could go sometime
10:52
sure. why not
anyway, i am going off for dinner. talk to you later :)
but ain't photoshop better than gimp?
cos I have heard things like that
@ShyamK, at cost Vs. function gimp is better. I can do all things photoshop can but free!
plus gimp will be supported FOREVER
10:54
/me uses paint.net mostly. Wishes monopaint would get somewhere
Adobe will one day cease to exist and with them their beloved ps
then all my psd files will not work
@JoshuaRobison: by which time they'd have reverse engineered the format ;)
@JoshuaRobison hmm.. yes.. but some one once told me that gimp hasn't been developed for a long time... and that ps has grown alot in that time
@ShyamK: gimp is under active development
PS.. well, the big advantage is a lot of graphics design folk are used to it
@JourneymanGeek well then its good.. cos I use cracked versions of PS.. since I can't afford it... but I would prefer to use GIMP.. if there were a lot more tutorials for it.. :)
10:57
lol
gimp has the same functions. photoshop has like ... healing brush whch is just a combo of several functions... duplicatable in gimp just fine
@ShyamK: neither feel very intutive for me
almost every other tutorial is for PS.. GIMP has a few tutorials
/me is currently trying to teach himself the freebie version of autodesk sketchbook mobile ;p
and I would love to learn how to draw.. in GIMP.. PS well just seemed easier :)
10:59
I'd love to learn to draw
I've gotten pretty good at making things dissappear tho ;p
@ShyamK, gimp is not for drawing , you need to learn inkscape
Inkscape has AWESOME drawing features
@JourneymanGeek Abra-cadabra? Magic!!!
stuff illustrator does not even have
lol
dad's company sometimes helps people source for equipment
photoshop isnt even for drawing
its for bitmap and photo etc.
11:00
I just alter the images, just enough that you can't notice obvious things and bypass us ;p
@JoshuaRobison oh... thanks.. no wonder I felt it was hard to draw in GIMP (silly me)
@JoshuaRobison ya but you can draw in it easily...
heh
yes you can.that is true
gimp also has really nice functions for working with brushes and even community brushes etc
havent used it for that in a while though
mostly because I cant find an ultrabook that runs linux!!!!!
or a tablet
T_T
lol
/me sort of 'rescued' a office computer we're throwing out to get a dedicated linux system
its a little tricky tho, it has integrated s3 graphics
oh..
also what is the main difference b/w a Mac and Linux.. aren't they more or less the same? just one is costly and the other is free
commands and all are basically the same in both...
lol
both are posix compliant and broadly unixish
11:04
haven't used a Mac.. just curious... :D
OS X is based off some of the BSD family tho
BSD?
Big Software Developer company? :P
11:34
@ShyamK No. Another open-source project.
(or set thereof)
@ObsessiveFOSS ya was joking :)
@ShyamK, the main difference is 2 years after buying a $3000 mac they will no longer support your hardware and then all new software will not be installable on your machine.
with linux . new software is always installable and old hardware is always supported
good answer :)
@ShyamK, with mac you are stuck with the aqua desktop. basically stuck with what you get. with linux you have unity , kde, lxde, tiling wm , gnome shell, enlightenment or whatever you want
so Linux rules (as always)
11:37
@ShyamK Cracked versions are illegal, and dangerous. I had to reinstall Windows for a friend after he killed it with some cracked game.
shrug. my wireless driver was working in debian. but stopped working now
whatever. time to just chroot for a while
right now it looks like the best linux ultrabook would be the macbook air T_T

A: Installing 12.04 onto a Dell studio with Windows 7 drops to grub rescue prompt

user85822 I hate spending hours searching Google. So do the rest of us, Ms Peachy. But if you seriously "like trying out various flavours of Linux" as you claim in your profile, then you got to put in effort. Else change your 'handle' to "Ms Cheeky" Oh, and before the powers-that-be pounce on me and...

I have no idea what this guy is talking about
11:50
@msPeachy he thought you asked the question :)
So much for that post...
@msPeachy there were no survivors
LOL, but he's like quoting something I said, I don't know, I don't remember most of my comments.
> Any suggestions? I hate spending hours searching Google.
stuff in the question
no one does, that is why they are so unimportant...
11:52
@jokerdino okay got it.
@msPeachy :)
earlier today, i thought you changed your gravatar and called another girl a vamp +.+
and then she ragequit.
@jokerdino lol, really?
lol search for ecleopatra
I wanted to change my gravatar to my new pet
@BrunoPereira ok, thank you
@jokerdino who's that?
@msPeachy the new girl that came to chat
11:57
Doing expense reports is so stupidly dull, I am sure I can outsource that to India, any ideas how?
@BrunoPereira yeah pass it to Amith :P
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira Amith.
ehehe
askubuntu.com/questions/155785/… <- someone closed this as a duplicate, but it's not. Can it be undone?
jrg
jrg
@SteveKroon can you tell us why it's not a duplicate?
12:01
@jrg I explained in the comment - my question is not about the freezing/kernel panic, like the question referenced in the duplicate
Can you answer this? How to associate all file types within Wine with its corresponding native applicat... http://askubuntu.com/q/51325?atw=1 #wine
jrg
jrg
@SteveKroon looks like Bruno got to it before I did. If you give me a bounty reason (attract attention perhaps?), then i'll gladly bounty it for you.
Yeah, attracting attention was the reason
@jrg Thanks!
jrg
jrg
There is the option to add in more details to the bounty - anything you want there?
@jrg No, thanks.
jrg
jrg
12:05
bounty offered.
@jrg tyvm
jrg
jrg
glad to help.
it wasn't a great question, was it?
jrg
jrg
it didn't attract attention.
but that changes now. :)
12:24
@jokerdino I guess not too many people care about broadcom?
@msPeachy yeah. :(
i own one :|
@jokerdino I have no idea what should be done to better organize it, your suggestion make sense.
@jokerdino Are you using it now?
@msPeachy thanks
@msPeachy yeah. it is inbuilt o.O
my wifi = broadcom chip
@jokerdino Oh I see. You didn't encounter issues with it? There must be something wrong with it since too many people are complaining about it
@msPeachy i do have problems every release. i usually scrap my way through.
jrg
jrg
12:27
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHG. panics all my code is gone!
what???!
@jrg For a coffee ?
jrg
jrg
crap crapc rap
i distinctly remember writing all those tests, now its gone. :\
it isn't on github, isn't on bitbucket...
and the ec2 instance doesn't have it either. ugh
@jrg cat ate your homework?
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira On a scale of that to this, this is worse. much worse.
12:31
@jrg :/ I always upload my code to the cloud :/
jrg
jrg
@hakermania so do i.
that's why i'm so perplexed.
@jrg then shouldn't it be there?
jrg
jrg
EXACTLY MY POINT. either i'm having 18-hour-long hallucinations, or it's just gone. :(
@jrg do you keep it only at the cloud?
jrg
jrg
there should be five copies: One on bitbucket, one on my laptop (quantal), one on my laptop (precise 1), one on my ec2 instance (precise) and one on my other laptop (precise). none of them have this 500 line file that I wrote. :\
12:36
@jrg Wow, you shouldn't be experiencing problems with so many copies. Maybe the upload failed on all of them? And still, don't you have the original? I don't get it.
jrg
jrg
A-HA! git stash
never commited, just stashed them. can't remember why...
jrg
jrg
crisis #1 for today: Averted.
i am gonna burn my debian install :D
12:38
reminded me of this for some reason
@JourneymanGeek i love that one
geeks are sometimes stupid
it reminds of this story written by a great writer.
I think oliver said it best
jrg
jrg
@JourneymanGeek I never git stash, must have been my pairing buddy who did it. ;P
so i'm not that stupid. ;P
12:39
in his story, he creates two doors for a big cat and a small cat.
When we give geeks a pile of potatos, they spend more time designing a better potato peeler than peeling a potato
7
he forgot that the small cat can go through the big door .
@jokerdino: heard that story about edison iirc
@JourneymanGeek that was slhck?
12:40
Geek spends more time building a machine that peels a potato than peeling it?
@JourneymanGeek edison?
@JourneymanGeek oliver?
jrg
jrg
still lost majority of the code, but i'm not completely back to square one. :(
Hello all
@JourneymanGeek right. oliver it is.
I got my hands dirty with Unity3D (Game Engine) on Windows today :) I am looking forward to see it coming to Linux, it is awesome!
12:42
lol, my memory is photgraphic. Sometimes i run out of film ;)
@hakermania mark it as the gaming engine
@JourneymanGeek :P
Did @jrg lose his code?
@hakermania thanks
@AmithKK as it seems
Why for setting a bounty you have to w8 2 days? I knew that my question wouldn't be answered without a bounty...
@hakermania: precisely so people won't wait for bounties before answering a question/
12:51
@JourneymanGeek You're right...
izx
izx
@jokerdino agree re wheezy iso. Try the xfce+lxde one: cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd
Fortunately you no longer need a human proxy to download ISOs...
he dosen't?
izx
izx
So one would hope..!
(apparently he can ssh to port 80 ;)
hey
i got the wireless working and again, i messed it up
