:'(
yes. /me is sad too. i put so much work in to getting my desktop just so only to backslide
@izx I've been laptop-only for the last three years :P
izx
izx
@GeorgeEdison There's something to be said for working on a multi-head beastie for productivity, for me at least...or maybe I've just gotten to used to it to give up (since ~early 2004)
it does help...a lot. at least for me
I sometimes plug in an external monitor.
I even had a third monitor on Windows thanks to my mini-DisplayLink monitor.
00:03
well...my lappie gets choppy under load so it's just no dice there.
After adding a USB number pad, a wireless mouse, and some decent speakers... it really isn't that bad at all.
@aking1012 I can run 3D accelerated games on my DisplayLink monitor - I was shocked :)
my laptop bursts in to flames if i run 2 monitors and do anything 3d accelerated for any period of time
izx
izx
@GeorgeEdison I don't count the time spent as a desktop replacement as "laptop time" ;)
I've been spoiled into sloth by a souped-up but heavy T520 and plan to ditch it for something lighter soon
thinking about setting up the desktop headless when it gets here and just remoting in to it from the lappie
@aking1012 That works for everything but streaming video and gaming.
izx
izx
00:06
@aking1012 That's one way to utilize its power for now
BTW @aking1012 the reason I originally asked is I have a beefy multi-core VPS or two if you needed something temporary for building stuff
oh. i'll be able to run builds on the desktop in a day or two
izx
izx
yeah, i figured :)
thx for the offer though
izx
izx
@aking1012 np, and if you need a remote shell on a fat pipe for anything odd that may come up just lmk
@izx will do

@aking1012: have you notice this in virtualbox (I certainly haven't in vmware):
> The resource usage difference between virtual and generic/server [kernels] is surprisingly large, with the virtual kernel system using 80Mb less RAM after a clean boot (130Mb vs 210Mb)
the generic image is larger, but nowhere near as large, even with any extra modules that may be loaded
i haven't checked ram usage specifically, but i know it is more performant
izx
izx
the -virtual kernel?
for me in vbox it seems to be also with guest additions
it would be interesting to run some benchmarks on both i guess, but i'm not sure if a real test suite exists for that...
my lappie doesn't even have AMD-V or Intel-VT so there's no way I can do that testing until I get the desktop here...
wow...i must need to fsck my disk. partimage just failed...

Whenever I make a commit (either in Git or Bazaar), my name and email address are used to 'sign' the commit.
Is there an environment variable with that information?
in git, its stored in your ~/.gitconfig
...or some way I can try and figure it out without asking the user for it?
@lazyPower Is there a non-Git storage location of that information?
Just curious since it would be nice not to have to depend on Git.
unless they have exported environment variables, no its all stored in your .gitconfig
brb
Hmm... the reason I ask is that I'm writing a script that generates Debian packaging - and the debian/changelog file needs the user's "Name <email>"
00:45
that's DEBEMAIL and DEBNAME
Ah, thank you.
01:07
we had a bunch of r-names in the ultraverse room a while back for 13.04 @GeorgeEdison that was fun.
design question, if you have a data model that represents a foreign datastore, would you make the sync a method on the model or would you create a helper class for it?
@lazyPower who is that directed towards?
Anyone that cares to answer
a method on the model that USES a helper class. that way you can test the class independently, but access it in practice as method
if i'm getting what you're saying...
sounds solid
01:15
hm.. anything like separate development - production environments?
or am I way off....
way off
I'm scraping a remote API and running a sync on the application DB. THe API itself is rate limited and extremely latent. So it makes more sense to cache
going back to surfing the web
however, I have really poor design practices, mostly from coding in isolation and/or my framework choices in the past.
at least, i'm not impressed with my design :)
simple example - you have a local stock database. you're trying to integrate a foreign data source for things you're missing in the local one. do you add a complex method to your local query routine, or do you add a class to access the foreign data store?

my answer was add the method to the model and have it utilize the class you build. this way you get the best of both. your model stays readable and not as complex. your class isolates the complexity and simplifies the interface so all you have in your model is
indeed. It allows me to keep my tests clean and it doesnt bloat my model

@aking1012 fair enough. it's a interesting situation, and one that doesn't fit everyone. (RE: 9-5 job)

@jrg oops. i took that statement completely the wrong way

I'm so tempted to do the stripe CTF
why? the top slots are all already taken. if i don't get leaderboards or a job out of it, it's pretty useless
jrg
jrg
well, i'm young and stupid. might as well. ;)
i suppose. or you could be saying they're farming talent with the CTF and i'm being dense by not assuming that to be the case. either way...
jrg
jrg
01:29
They are farming talent, they are logging all the stuff we do as well
that way, they go and can stop people from breaking into stripe in the future.
yeah, there was a middle-eastern/asian group trying to farm 0day at one point by putting up a minimal install windows server 2008 and offering prizes for breaches. i suppose they didn't think people holding 0day would know it's worth way more than an ipad or whatever
jrg
jrg
hahah.
@aking1012 sounds good. way over my head, tried to get my dad to explain it to me... said just about what you were saying, If it was local, he said it would be easier as a method, something about the data model having data to sync....
jrg

i trust the stripe people though, they've done well with what they do.

@aking1012: excuse me, a 12 year old isn't going to care. I became aware of this infosec world 6 months ago, if that. I'm still getting used to the idea. ;)
This just automates it from what I've seen, should make more people try it out.
yeah. it works fine for me. every once in a while on huge allocations i get freezes. other than that, i don't have a noticeable performance impact

Once that's done, it's on to GTK+!
In the meantime, I'm packaging libSDL.
This is starting to get ridiculous:

@aking1012 Yeah, it seemed to me like a common multimedia framework.
very common
04:51
@aking1012: By tomorrow I should have that NSIS-generating script working.
...and I've finished another utility method that generates Debian packaging.
AAARRRGGGHHH!!
@AmithKK: I did it again - I accidentally sent the packages to your PPA :P
I have no idea why LP does that to me. Not to worry though, they will fail and disappear shortly.
Now we will send the build to the correct PPA... I hope...

@Takkat Can you help with this: Is there a problem between flash plugin, and Lubuntu?
I can't tell (Lubuntu only in a VM at home). But it may be likely. Flash plugin was always evil.
especially when on 64-bit.
But myself I never had an issue.
I installed lubuntu restricted extras, and installed flashplugin-installer, and no go. it 32bit. any thoughts?
06:15
Hm - did you install a flash-thingy in addition to that from restricted-evils?
Tried with the adobe one?
Did all that, and I can't play flash, it says missing plugin in chromium.
Chromium should already come with its own flash.
Oh wait - this was Chrome I guess.
But its not working..
Not at all or is it only certain flash sites that refuse to play nice?
Not at all
06:23
That's weird. Here its only the smurf effect on YouTube that made me disable it there. There should not be too many difference between Ubuntu and Lubuntu.
I know, I'm lost. Nothing that I've tried works..
Did you try with Firefox?
Same problems
The world would be better without Flash.
I guess, I'll keep at it.

Hi all
@fossfreedom Can you help with the flash problem I'm having?
it would very useful to produce some sort of wiki or procedures, that can be used for answers
there's a lot of repeated questions that have the same answers
@fossfreedom lol hi and thanks.
and having a wiki or something would vbe very useful
09:08
@Mitch I could try - what's the issue?
@LnxSlck there is a meta Q about canonical questions. Is that what you are referring to?
I installed lubuntu 12.04, and I can't get flash to work. Every time I try to play a flash file, I get plugin missing. I'm using chromium.
@fossfreedom, not really, for example, i keep seeing questions like: How do i install Nvidia card?
@fossfreedom, if we had like an official procedure, we could point users to it, instead of repeating the same answers
@LnxSlck meta this - lets get a consensus on the way forward.
@LnxSlck I like what I'm reading
like this flash question
we should have like a full procedure on installing flash
and then simply point users to it, and only if they had problems following the procedure, then we would proceed to questions and answers
just my 2 cent
@Mitch, have you installed any flash plugin?
09:12
Yes, Adobe's
@Mitch askubuntu.com/search?q=flash+chromium ... 2.5K questions! - sorry cant help - dont use chromium.
@Mitch, how did you install it?
Sudo apt-get install adobe..... It not working in Firefox either.
maybe you need the plugin link
What plugin link? apt-get install flashplugin-installer?
09:16
something like /location/ibflashplayer.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/
The file exists. I've tried apt-get, synaptic, and even downloaded the file from Adobe, but no dice.
Bounty offered: How do I add a Notebook to a Box in a VBox? http://askubuntu.com/q/155298?atw=1 #applicationdevelopment
@mitch, the file exists in ~/.mozilla/plugins ?
@LnxSlck yes it does
09:33
@Mitch, i suggest you remove all that, and try a clean instalation
@LnxSlck I did, I even re-installed the OS, and still no flash.
@LnxSlck Here is a good one for you.. The system is a PIII 1Ghz w/512 RAM. Can that be part of it?
@Mitch it should still work - you may need a compositing manager such as xcompmgr to get it to display. But that doesnt sound like your issue.
It is the system. Here are the requirement from Adobe:
Linux

2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel Atom 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks
Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) 5.6 or later (32 bit and 64 bit), openSUSE® 11.3 or later (32 bit and 64 bit), or Ubuntu 10.04 or later (32 bit and 64 bit)
Mozilla Firefox 4.0 or Google Chrome
512MB of RAM; 128MB of graphics memory
Now with YouTube, using HTML5 will display with no problem, But other sites that use flash will not.
@Mitch ... generally those statements are from companies that dont have such old equipment to test with.
@fossfreedom I agree, but doesn't make sense?
09:47
agree - and I can only sympathise. I only use firefox and can only recommend the flash-aid plugin to fix flash issues.
@mitch, no
@fossfreedom Come think of it, your're right, the system had XP, and flash ran OK
@Mitch, have you tried other flash plugins besides the proprietary ?
@LnxSlck That's affirmative..
@Mitch, you have?
09:50
Yes I have. I've been at almost non-stop for the past 48 hours
@Mitch, which one you tried?
Gnash
and lightspark?
No, not lightspark
try that
if that doesn't work, i tell you, removing all of flash and correctly installing it should work
i have ubuntu 64 and didn't have any problems with that
it was very simple to install
10:09
I will and let you know. Got to go into a meeting now. BRB..

@fossfreedom, I tend to stay away from yes or no questions on the main site
it's often hard to proce when the answer is "no" and if no body knows there generally is no answer....

I guess a "how to install xubuntu on arm device" might be a good question

Anyone want to take a few minutes to help me with this new fedora server (never used fedora :/ )
basically I just want to get a LAMP stack going with phpmyadmin as well.

my attempts to setup phpmyadmin have been futile

i take it you tried the google results?
most of them
I usually try for a good hour before I come here
probably royally mucked things up in doing so

It was initially blank. so this is what google told me to do
doesn't work either way
and it's not even the path the error specifies
it's probably not in tmp, it's probably in var
