@jrg what about just bread and water xD

jrg
@LordofTime we like to eat "well". ;P

you can eat well with just bread, water, cabbage, and a fire to make cabbage soup with xD
at least, in an emergency :P

@jokerdino yes.

@jokerdino yeah

@AmithKK I know nothing about food prices. Is that a over priced hunk of cheese?

@jrg a pound of cheese @ $10? tiny bit overpricedish

morning was anything earlier than an hour ago!

at 17/lb it better be sushi grad salmon or tuna...just sayin
i don't care how much money you have, if you spend 17/lb on a topping as opposed to an ingredient there's something missing in the mental faculties
3

@aking1012 its an ingredient :p
not a topping

we'll just disagree on that one. but i take your point

/me never skimps on quality of ingredients going into his cooking
now... behold... evil and Dark

5:04 PM
sushi == bonus. the only thing you have to "cook" is rice. and that doesn't count as cooking

@aking1012 I'd rather prepare my own personal recipe for spicy chicken pasta with red and green peppers and take the two hours to do it than make sushi. Since making sushi is hard for those unfamiliar with the process

fair point. /me needs to find a nice japanese girl that considers it a favor (native cuisine) instead of a chore (wth is that and how do you make it) to consider sushi a staple
:/

@aking1012 that, and i prefer actually cooked stuff :P sometimes you just want hot food :P

5:20 PM
@LordofTime Are you a chopstick master?
Also, cooking rice is, in fact, cooking. One may consider, also, the difficulty in deciding between types of rice.

sushi rice is very specific
and define "chopstick master"
puts away the doombringer orb he brought out in #ubuntuforums @ irc.freenode

I was referring to general cuisine. A chopstick master must not drop food more than once every 512 bites. The chopsticks may not be readjusted more frequently than every 64 seconds.
Also, why are we discussing cuisine in the AskUbuntu general room?

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS because it's off-topic everywhere, and this room works just fine for off-topic jazz.
3

^ that

jrg
cooking.SE doesn't like eating.SE discussions. much.

5:25 PM
semi-offtopicness is permitted on occasion

Q: Questions relating to installation of software in Wine

Lord of TimeHow should we handle questions like this one where the question is "How do I get the software installer to work"? While this is partly related to ubuntu, it is not directly related, and is related to either some inconsistency with Wine or other programs running under Wine.

Begins building all of the installers, source archives, and DEBs for version 0.2 of NitroShare...
I might even throw an RPM in there...

@GeorgeEdison :)
I'll be using it shortly. May be I'll get a band of 100 or more baboons to use it if its fast..

RPMs ARE EVIL

RPM is a symlink to /dev/chaos
every single RPM file

...and version 0.2 of NitroShare is released!

Ok, lets wait for nitesh to come up with another blog post. :P
umm.. I guess you know, whenever you update nitroshare, a guy named nitesh blogs about it. And it somehow ends up in my feed reader.

7:08 PM
Wait... you're joking right?
The nitesh? From Ubuntu Vibes?

Can moderators remove revisions so the text in them is not visible to the public? I'm seeing a post with an email in it that will, sadly, get spammed, unless there is a way to remove it from the revision history and the post.

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS no, and email doesn't count as sensitive information.

@LordofTime I'd rather have an RPM than an MSI.

7:30 PM
and I'd rather have a *.tar.gz than an RPM, an MSI, a .bin, etc.
BUILDING FROM SOURCE FOR THE ULTIMATE WIN

@LordofTime .run's are the worst.

as I said, building from source, ultimate win.

@jrg By being the worst, do you mean :(){ :|: & };:, no shebang, rm -rf /, /bin/false, or a combination thereof?

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS pfft.

@jrg I'm sorry, I don't understand your remark.

jrg
7:40 PM
I was being sarcastic.

@LordofTime is there a reliable source you can cite for that translation that you've now removed?

@ObsessiveFOSS was trying to get @jrg to respond to you :P
succeeded

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS I meant I think you're being silly, or perhaps misinformed.
but even that is probably not an accurate representation of the emotion.

@jrg I'd say misinformed.

Eating.se could be a good Area 51 proposal I don't want to have on my profile.

By the way, it's 32° C here (that's about 90° F).

@GeorgeEdison It's more bearable up here in Upstate New York.

New York would be south of where I am, so... :)

@GeorgeEdison we're getting a dry breeze now. Edit: It seems to have stopped, and it's becoming unbearable again.
My 10Mbps internet connection is becoming unbearable due to a modem overheat, so I will go offline for about 20 minutes while I hook up a new modem and align it perfectly with my rack-mounted server I use for a developer's machine and for accessing HTTP servers.

8:01 PM
My wireless router gets pretty hot during the winter :)
I almost can't touch it now.

I'm sorry to hear that, even at 56.6 kbps over dial-up I use while my broadband is down. Please hold on.

:P
I remember dial-up (sadly).

8:24 PM
Hello everyone
And I remember dial-up too... now I'm spoiled by high-speed.

I was in a nice hotel last week with a wired connection that topped out at just under 30 mbps. Not bad.

That is nice! I work for an ISP now so I do most of my downloads at work

jrg
@RolandTaylor that looks very dangerous.

All I did was run 'unity' O_o
And I got this error message saying "That's a bad thing to wish for..."
Next thing I know...

I'm talking about that monster in the blender window.

I KNOW!

Attempting to get "unity" started all this :O
jk

I'm not fond of Unity yet... I don't know why.

jrg
heh.
@CoreyWhitaker unity is all well and good, as long as you agree with it. It is very opinionated.

@jrg - I couldn't help but chuckle a little at that. I'm still getting used to Ubuntu, I'm a longtime Fedora user and swapped to Ubuntu for better video card support.

jrg
@RolandTaylor i don't see you on gtalk

@jrg I decided to hide today :P

@RolandTaylor i don't like you hiding.

That's the point :P
Not you per se, but just I feel like a target is on my back...

jrg
well, you do. Well, you have a sign that says "Kick me"

O_o I do?
That explains a lot...

8:51 PM
IT EXPLAINS NOTHING! Does anyone here recommend Gnome fall back over the Unity dock? My Radeon drivers won't display the Gnome Desktop environment or anything but the Ubuntu 2D dock...

jrg
@Flabricorn sorry i haven't replied to your email, i've been gone since thursday and only got back yesterday evening.

It's fine, I know about Scout stuff.
It turns out there's no better solution than Binary blobs.

jrg
Did you follow Bruno's post on how to get the latest drivers?

I did, it's that they never released a driver that would work with PPC_64 architecture.
I have the best open source one the kernel provides.

jrg
OH, I keep forgetting it's your PowerMac.

8:55 PM
It's just a better machine for Ubuntu than a single core Dell.
Someone suggested a kernel patch because another reason I couldn't get an older driver installer to work was the kernel version + old driver = bad combination.
No go with the patch though... The 3.2 ABI isn't backward compatible with the 9-3 installer. Effing binary blobs.

jrg
:(
have you tried lubuntu or xubuntu?
12
Q: How do I switch to Xubuntu?

jrgI'd like to use Xubuntu in 11.10 instead of Unity, how do I install it and switch to it?

8
A: How do I install LXDE / Lubuntu?

jrgFor 11.10 and 12.04 For 11.10 and 12.04, you'll need to do this through a terminal. Open up a terminal (Super, then type Terminal into the dash), then run the following: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop You will get asked to enter your password, and you will...

those should help you along.

I actually was recommended for xubuntu but we has some shitty AT&T internet (analog) here. So, I already had a PPC release for the 12.04 release of Ubuntu so I decided - I'll get to Lubuntu when I have two hours to kill.

jrg
If you can get to the place where I had the class sometime, then you can use that connection. I'll be aroundish for the next week or two, or I can wget the PPC packages and send my sister to swim team with a thumbdrive for you.

Ha, thanks, really I just need to set it up overnight and let it download.
We're getting a new connection soon it's just FiOS doesn't cover my area and we're looking into something better that's not a corporation feeding a political party I don't appreciate with a steady cash flow.
So, gnome-fallback not worth it?

jrg
you could try gnome-fallback.
I've used it for those times I break my ATI drivers,it works.
but it's almost broken at this point, you have to do some hacking to make it work properly.

9:07 PM
I've heard people have had problems with it, a lot of people on /r/ubuntu told me if I wanted to try it, I would need gnome-tweak-tool.

jrg
gtt is a must-have for that.
you could get away with ubuntu-tweak, but gtt is much better for it.

Alright, I figured it wouldn't quite be a great fit without it.
So xubuntu would be a good one, gnome-fallback if you're willing to work to get it functioning, or lubuntu.

jrg
I see your heroku site hasn't been hit with spammers yet.
Yup.
Mine got slammed, which was rather amusing until I destroyed it.

Ha, sorry I meant to ask if I could use that, I mentioned you in there. Yeah I'm honestly surprised I haven't been mauled, but then I guess there isn't a spammer quite interested in my meager page.
Gonna be back later, I'm working on my first ever Ubuntu application!
Also if you get back to the computer do you know if because I'm using a 32bit OS on 64bit architecture if that could be a problem?

jrg
9:30 PM
It shouldn't be a problem. :)
I use 32bit on my other laptop, which is a 64 machine.
Crap, Github got VC money. Well, there goes the town.

Coming across this (
http://askubuntu.com/questions/161705/need-to-know-about-type-of-shell-and-which-is-best-one) question I immediatly had the itch to do some formatting, but what do you guys think. Will this question be closed due to beeing to general/subjective?

It's a little general - also, yes formatting.

jrg
@Flabricorn After my initial reaction, I don't think it'll be that bad.
@MJB Yes, but it could be salvaged with a edit.

Well, it's still kind of disappointing.

Q: What is the default shell, and are there any other options?

JK PatelI am new to Ubuntu. Encountering the word shell, I got a list of many different shells. So I'd like to know: Which shell is used by default in Ubuntu? What other shells are available? Is there any advantage in switching to another shell?

(linked Wikipedia "shell (computing)" in question to defuse the "what is a shell" part ;)
@Flabricorn: you can edit questions similarly, and they will be put in a queue for approval (until you have 2k rep). My policy when editing is to stay true to the spirit rather than the letter, and that often requires cutting out lots of blather from newbies who may not know how to phrase things, or what the point is. Occasionally (less than 1% in my personal experience), you might make a mistake and the OP will comment to clarify, in which case you fix it per his request or rollback the edit.

10:16 PM
Oh, I was talking about the Github when I said it was disappointing, and otherwise he said he was going to format himself already so I hadn't immediately jumped into it.

izx
Oops... meant for @MJB, not @Flabricorn. Apologies.
Where are my glasses? Increases Text Zoom to 200%....

MJB
@izx Whoops... Let's compare edits ;)

Oh that would make more sense.

izx
@MJB The problem with yours (IMO) is it veers back towards the Not Constructive boundary ("which is the best?" "tell me all the available shells" "tell me more about the shell")
I'll leave it to someone else to approve/reject, considering my self-interest :)

MJB
No prob. I see what you mean. It's been a while since I was last active on askubuntu, I guess I'm still a bit rusty :)

izx
10:25 PM
Well welcome back then, and keep up with the edits -- Linus knows we need a few -- it was a massive improvement over the original, and I'd have approved it if I hadn't gotten to it first :)

I met an ubuntu user in the real world today.

O.o
hands @Flabricorn his Met-a-real-Ubuntu-user badge :P

It was weird... there was "natural light"... I don't like natural light.
And what was the weirdest part is that the person was female... O_O

izx
I prefer fluorescent @ 5000K (ironically called "Daylight")
@Flabricorn Oooooh. Did you perform your duty as an AU user and offer help with tech support should she need it?

Actually yes, and some people overhearing our conversation came over and started beating us with copies of Windows 7 and Mac OSX.
Luckily we had cut our old Ubuntu disks into shurikens. We sliced those cooperate motherfuckers.

10:32 PM
Quick +10/25 for our regular audience: Tell this guy to use sudo to install, enabling root account is not necessary, before I edit the title to make the answer obvious and some lurker jumps on it ;)

No, no that's all silly. But we did have a damn heated debate about Mac OSX and Ubuntu. They would not listen to the words: "Free"... and "I have not EVER seen a virus on there!"

izx
Ooh^2, an FOSS geekette too :P

Then I left because when I asked her what Distro she uses, she said "I don't know... which one is purple?"

Funneh

I left... just... apparently she only used it because her brother was a software engineer.

jrg
10:40 PM
@Flabricorn you wouldn't happen to be hitting on my sister would you?
;P

izx
LOL!

jrg
Because she uses a purple distro, and she only uses it because her brother is a software engineer (after a fashion).

Isn't your sister around eight?

jrg
she's 12. groans
There is a big difference bro. ;)

Installed the Lubuntu - Xubuntu and then I was like: Fuck it. MYTHBUNTU! TROLOLOLOL and now I keep getting system errors, and package manager errors, crash report detected, and internal errors.
Golly, twelve already?

jrg
10:45 PM
Uh-oh.

I got it.
I think.

@izx nixie pixel ftw

Hahahahah. Yeah broken package dependencies with Mythbuntu.

Q: How to uninstall a program in Wine?

AlexanderHow do you uninstall a program in Wine? I tried installing a windows program through wine but it didn't work and now I can't figure our how to get rid of it.

I love the smell of quick-closes when @jrg is in da house ;)

jrg
coughs Only when it's obvious. ;)

izx
This has been marked as a dupe, but to the incorrect question ("how do I install extra drivers"). Should be duped instead to this exact one, which is explicitly about installing nvidia drivers for the old GeForce FX/5xxx series.
Can any piano players expand on what this bit means: shortcut keys for switching applications (Super+1, Super+2...) are very difficult to use now...it doesn't seem to register the keypresses as a chord

it doesn't register that the keys were struck together

izx
ok, I thought so, wanted to confirm..thx

@izx I believe the "chord" is a shortcut, even with only 4 years of piano. Perhaps they mean broken chord, in which keys are pressed separately?

izx
11:23 PM
You both seem to be right, his problem seems to be the super key doesn't appear to be recognized and 1, 2... etc are typed out instead in the open app.

jrg
darn, we're a bunch of nerds and none of us can google things? ;P

izx
Too lazy :p

@jrg I prefer "geek" over "nerd".

izx
And it's confusing:
"heard as if sounding simultaneously. These need not actually be played together" <---- wiki

jrg
Well, they traditionally are played together.

izx
11:26 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS Someone's touchy...

@izx Yes, almost obsessively.

calling something "broken cord" isn't correct imo. what you called a broken chord would be called an arpeggio or similar to one

jrg
but then it isn't a chord.

exactly so

@aking1012 You are correct. It's my bad that I'm using nonstandard material translated from the Russian.

11:28 PM
heheh

izx
Thanks maestros, I've edited the Q for those of us who didn't have the benefit (or curse, YMMV) of playing piano as a kid :P

an hour a day at 5 am for 16 years...arguably a curse

@izx It's both a benefit and a drawback... It, by way of competitive inhibition in my schedule, keeps me off local rowing teams.

izx
Invent something that will slightly damp the vibrations in pianos and transfer the stolen energy to a paddlewheel ;)

@izx Through handling the local team's website(unfortunately run on Windows Server 2003) I have learned that a paddlewheel is not acceptable for a race.

SU chatters ask me to nominate myself :D

SU is nice for rep-farming, from my limited experience, if you have the necessary generalized knowledge.
Nah, we need you here.

well, I have a good answer to rep ratio in SU.

11:40 PM
Hey, can someone check this suggested edit? As one may see in the comments, the author agreed to my edits. askubuntu.com/suggested-edits/14891

@izx It's a trap. They won't really vote me in :P

Feel better man.

@ObsessiveFOSS hmm sounds like a dupe answer

@jokerdino you just made a starwars reference without seeing the movie

@Flabricorn What?

jrg
11:42 PM
ITS A TRAP!

@aking1012 I probably learnt the reference somewhere else.

yeah, it was meme-ed

@jokerdino I am going to delete my answer once this is suggested. Also, coincidently, I am watching Star Wars right now.

jrg
Time to update my laptops to the Q kernel.
@jokerdino have you done that yet?
