@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Agree

o/ Hi Ravexina, how's it going ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Hi, not bad ...
if only it was possible to use apt + slackware

I haven't dabbed into Slackware yet, but for my senior project I'm using OpenWRT which has opkg instead of apt, which is alright.

I have used Slackware a couple of times, it's somehow nice... but you get bored after a while... and spending time to compile everything.
Have you ever used Devuan?

5:31 PM
Nope
I've used CentOS in VM, Mint couple times, GhostBSD in VM, NetBSD on raspberry pi, Deepin in VM and currently on one of my laptops.
Fedora once, but it left a sour impression after Network Manager just stopped working for no reason and I couldn't figure out why it's not working

you have pretty good taste ...
sadly these days I don't have much time to spend digging into new distributions ...

Neither do I due to school stuff
I'm very much happy with Deepin for desktop reasons, so I'll probably stick with that for a very long time. OpenWRT is perfect for embedded stuff, so I'll probably use it more often once I figure out how to compile kernel modules on it. And for databases class I'm just using Ubuntu 1804 server with mysql installed + sqlite for term project
So yeah, 3 distros is gonna be good enough for some time. And then we'll see, maybe I'll dab into a few new distros

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy same here

o/ Hi, Rinz ! How's sushi lately ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Deepin seems really pretty but I rather using OpenBox on top of anything ...

5:47 PM
OpenBox is nice and lightweight. Blackbox,too is a good option. I used to have Openbox on 14.04 with tint2 panel for a dock. But after awhile I got into Unity and Deepin's desktop is the next best thing to me after that. It has issues here and there, but over all I love it.

Q: Why aren't the official flavors of Ubuntu LTS like Xubuntu LTS or Lubuntu LTS supported / developed in the 5 year cycles

TerranceAccording to https://lubuntu.me/bionic-released/ and https://xubuntu.org/ it says support goes until April 2021 which is less than 3 years away. Also, it was commented to me from the answer here https://askubuntu.com/a/1085307/231142 that only the core of Ubuntu is supported for 5 years. Since ...

seems more like main site question

@jokerdino He asks how do we support the questions related to Xubuntu and Lubuntu which seem to be only supported in 5 year cycles
Aka what do we tell people who come with questions about their unsupported Ubuntu flavor, while core Ubuntu with same version number is supported for 5 years

well, only the main repo packages are supported by Canonical.

It's not about packages
It's about Xubuntu and Lubuntu - official flavors
Ubuntu 18.04 , canonical says they support it for 5 years, till 2023. Xubuntu website says Xubuntu 18.04 is supported till 2021. What do we tell people after 2021 with Xubuntu 18.04 ? Do we support Xubuntu 18.04 till 2023 or 2021 ?

hm, as we are supposed to follow the official support cycle, we should be telling them to upgrade if and when their flavour goes EOL

6:26 PM
As far as I understand Ubuntu and Xubuntu base is the same, so it makes no sense to treat them differently because of support cycle
Although I can understand it's a requirement

7:00 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy those 3 years are ONLY related to the desktop specific packages. For lxde that is 1, 2% of the whole installation
and we close bug related questions anyways so I don't see a problem:)
(also: I have yet to see a question that would need to be closed because it would be off topic due to the desktop specific packages being eol)

We're installing a server with 8 TB of RAM
Yup, no mistake: In-memory database server with 8 Terabytes of RAM (no, not disk! RAM!)
This thing has more RAM than all of @Videonauth 's HDDs together.
@RolandiXor :D Did you get a reply???

7:21 PM
@Rinzwind Well put that as answer on meta
@Fabby Holly Ritchie and Thompson, that's some huge database
Does it even have enough digits for primary key to go into 8 TB ?

@NathanOsman I'm still amazed about the lack of basic understanding of science and technology by the majority of the populace... :-(
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy There are no keys: it's a BI DB.
SAP HANA is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system developed and marketed by SAP SE. Its primary function as a database server is to store and retrieve data as requested by the applications. In addition, it performs advanced analytics (predictive analytics, spatial data processing, text analytics, text search, streaming analytics, graph data processing) and includes ETL capabilities as well as an application server. == History == During the early development of SAP HANA, a number of technologies were developed or acquired by SAP SE. These included TREX search engine...

That's something new

Also: something well-paid if you can say "I'm a SAP HANA expert..."

Well, I'm so far an SQL non-expert XD so I'll probably hold of on that stuff. But meanwhile I'm becoming an expert on building H-bridges to control a stepper motor. Yesterday finally got the thing to work with raspberry pi, but the motor lacks 1 Volt, so I'll have to finish up building a variable power supply and power it from there instead of Raspberry

You're reading yourself to be a robotics expert... ;-)

7:52 PM
Hello fellow users!
I have an old laptop with 14.04 with a intermittently broken screen that I've decided I can use as a desktop-ish machine instead by plugging in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Am I probably safe to do an in-place upgrade, or do I need to do a wipe/full install? (I'm guessing the answer is the latter but I'm open to some second guessing...)

@AaronHall I’d really recommend a new installation, takes only half an hour if you don’t need to save any data.
An upgrade is possible of course, but if you don’t really have to do it – why bother?

8:15 PM
ok I'd like to be able to back up files I want to keep over the network to my usual laptop - is that possible? Can I set up ssh and scp? If yes (I think it's yes) is there a good tutorial I can be pointed to?

Lol, not a robotics expert, I guess
I used to think I've at least some expertise in Linux. But disabling boot messages just drives me nuts
I'm seriously close to breaking another laptop screen because of this

afk...

8:42 PM
This is driving me nuts! I am assuming that we on the Ask Ubuntu site continue to support the Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu that are all 14.04LTS where they all have a 3 year support but yet the Ubuntu base has a 5 year support. I never thought about it until now when someone asked the other day about Lubuntu 18.10 and an answer said to them that if they liked the older version in 18.04 that it was supported for another 2.5 years.
If the official sites like lubuntu.me or xubuntu.org only support for 3 years then why are we supporting them for 5?

Random thought, what would be your approach in trying to identify and classify scenes in a movie?

@RodrigoSilva um . . . database. Timestamp as primary key when scene begins, and maybe an id key to reference table with list of nouns for scene type: 1 for action, 2 for romance, 3 for monologue, etc

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy is there such a database?

@Fabby well I still would be fine having 2 TB more HDD instead so much ram is seldom used or needed ;)

I was thinking if running an object detection algorithm and setting a threshold for when most of the objects disappeared, I would assume the scene changed, would work

8:49 PM
@Videonauth No, you get the 1TB after we've tested the 2TB.

will be fine too :P more space is more space

@Terrance "We" = "Canonical"?
(You talking about extended support?)
@RodrigoSilva Sergiy was talking about any SQL database of your choice.
MySQL, Oracle, MicroSoft SQL, SQLite, ...

@Fabby Oh, right. I'm not at that stage yet, I meant in a more high level way

@Fabby no, about closing questions for being about eol releases

Fetching and storing the data would be a future issue

8:53 PM
@RodrigoSilva Ah, a meta question then.

He ended up deleting the second user too as I kept addressing him as his first user...
:D :D :D

@dessert Deleted...

9:40 PM
@Fabby I am actually talking about how we support it here. Once the Ubuntu LTS goes EOL we tag it as off topic. Since Xubuntu, Lubuntu and Kubuntu are only 3 year cycles on their cycles why aren't we tagging those as off topic after 3 years?

@Terrance Good question and I think only canonical can answer that... There are a few of the employees around here, but none of them are in char AFAIK.

@Terrance I know this can be confusing and kinda irritating, but we're just here to answer questions. Pretty much all of our off-topic question policies are only there to prevent us from having to deal with questions we can't answer. EoL essentially being "upgrading is the answer". Obviously that doesn't apply to all questions where the OP is using an EoL release, which is why the close reason says "specific to an EoL release".
If the question can be answered or seems unrelated to the version, just remove that information. We're trying to create (basically) a knowledge base. So if a Q can improve our knowledge base then great. That's the goal. I don't think being overly worried about other distros support cycles is very important.
(although it is interesting. I had no idea that the other distributions didn't have the same support cycle)

10:10 PM
@Seth Fair enough. I think then we need to discourage answers then suggesting to people that are using it that it is only supported for that long when it will still function just fine up until the underlying version of Ubuntu itself goes EOL and can no longer receive any updates of any kind.
The only reason I am really bringing this up is that I made a comment yesterday on an answer here where to me it seemed to tell OP that the Lubuntu in question would only be supported for another 2.5 years. I made the comment about supporting for 4.5 more years here and I though that Thomas Ward was going to tear my throat out about it.
(Also, I didn't know until yesterday about the different support cycles either.)

@Terrance Well technically it is only supported that long in many senses. No more updates, many of your problems will only be solved by upgrading, etc.
It's a messy situation that I've thought a lot about, but I'm not really sure how to fix.

@Seth I agree 100%
It indeed is very messy!
Of course, I never make it the 5 years myself, but I have seen plenty of questions on here about it.

10:27 PM
yep. I've seen quite a few questions from 8.04 and various 9 releases. People don't like upgrading for some reason.

That they do not!

Usually by the time it gets to them asking here there's little we can do except say "upgrade" but we can't (or at least shouldn't) bad all EOL questions because a good number are questions from recent releases that really have nothing to do with the version of the OS

I have an old NEC Z1 that the last Ubuntu I could really run on it was 10.xx. I wouldn't dream of asking questions here on it as I would find a way myself to do whatever it is I am looking for. But I also know that new applications simply will not run on a system that old.
@Seth Good point! I have seen that many times here myself about it not being about the OS as much as the applications themselves.
