Protip: if your wife tells the kids "supper is cooking, we can't make it go any faster", it seems "I have a blow torch" is not very helpful.
OMG lol this could go into a discussion why NAA or haf baked answers are not helpful :D

12:29 AM
man, CSS behaves so weird sometimes
it's a constant trial and error to get things done, and sometimes I don't even understand why things weren't right at the first place

lol

yes

12:59 AM
alright, I could reproduce the error in a smaller document, will try to organize it and write a question on SO
is 169 lines a little too much? :D
the whole slideshow JS script is a little long

1:30 AM
hacktoberfest shirt is here :D

MAN
nice shirt
not what the "MAN" was for: I think I had an "eureka" moment about the weird CSS bug

1:51 AM
@KazWolfe ooh, nice octocat!
I got mine like a month ago but forgot to post here.
didn't get nearly as cool of an octocat tho

@KazWolfe Still waiting for mine. Congrats.

2:08 AM
@NathanOsman NV editing is hell...

STEAM SALE!!!

I'm tempted to get shadow of war

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa

55% off Planet Coaster.
Gah.
I promised myself I'd buy it if it dropped below 50%.

hm. so tempted to get a vive now

2:12 AM
Lol.

wait.
when did i get civ 6
what

lol
maybe Valve put it on your account like Apple with U2

Nope.
Valve doesn't publish Civ.

... apparently i did buy it

They'd be more likely to throw Portal or L4D on your account.

2:20 AM
cool.

can you guys see this fiddle? jsfiddle.net/0mvqeptr

Lol.

never used the website, not sure how to share it

Yes.
I can view it.

cool
can you help me with a little doubt that is annoying me?

2:23 AM
What's that?

the code on the first fiddle (jsfiddle.net/0mvqeptr) and the updated fiddle (jsfiddle.net/0mvqeptr/1) is exactly the same, the images are the exact same size. I only changed the image that I decided to make visible and absolute positioned. Why does the latter has the image moved down?

Aaaand. I just spent a bucketload of money.

this showed up while I was making a script, and I could solve it easily with top: 0, but I have no clue why it behaves like this and this annoys me lol

Let me take a look.
I'm downloading 7.3 GB over a 5 Mbps connection so I've got time.
:P
@IanC they are in the same place for me...

I thought you had LTE >_>

2:28 AM
@TheWanderer On my Windows desktop?
I mean yeah - I could tether. And burn through my data cap in 15 minutes.

oh, you don't tether normally?

I only have 5 GB at full speed.
@TheWanderer 5 Mbps works for normal browsing / email / music streaming etc.
It's just large downloads that give me pain.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

@NathanOsman really?? I get the weird microbe image in the middle, and another image immediately to the left of it in the first. The second is the microbe in the middle and the other image is in the lower left corner, like a line below
I've to scroll the fiddle to see the image here

The images on the left are different if that matters.

2:32 AM
yeah, they are the same size though
the third and forth <img>s show in the bottom, and the second show immediately to the side
I've no clue why

@NathanOsman bet i beat you

@KazWolfe at what?
ARGH. WINDOWS 10.
STOP INSTALLING UPDATES.

@NathanOsman at spending boatloads of money on steam

You probably will win.

2:50 AM
well, I'll go get some rest, maybe tomorrow I'll figure this fiddle mystery
good night!

BITS keeps respawning.

that's a BIT weird

Is there a "blacklist service" button...

3:11 AM
@NathanOsman provided my vive is arriving saturday...

You bought one?

yereep

high five
Lemme know what you think of it.

will do

Does it work with Steam on Linux?
Or is it Windows-only right now?

3:14 AM
i will make it linux only

Okay.

it should work with linux but we'll see
worst case, wine

4 hours later…
6:52 AM
1 GB to go.

7:42 AM
Almost there...

Wow still downloading on that 7 GB ? in that time i would have had downloaded 50Gb or more easily O_o

1 hour later…
8:55 AM
BITS has always been a hard to disable forced background process.

Q: Is it okay to rename questions as this?

pa4080I'm asking about the question How to delete the files of adimistrator by using guest session. According to my answer there and to the discussion under the other answer, I assume the problem is solved. The answer of the question "How do I delete files of administrator by using guest session?" is ...

10:28 AM
@karel I would like to talk about askubuntu.com/review/reopen/779056 . In my opinion the answer you referred to in your comment ("Sorry, I cant'...") doesn't really cover the problem there (no VNC) and is only the least voted answer (due to being new, I admit). So for discoverability I'd rather reopen this question and have a woking answer here.

11:03 AM
@guntbert I've got a lot to say about this topic so maybe we can open a separate chat room to discuss it if it becomes necessary. You probably noticed that I commented under that question that the OP's solution is an exact duplicate of this answer that was posted by gary: askubuntu.com/questions/145537/… in the linked duplicate question. This answer was upvoted 3 times.
Even if the question was reopened and answered it still couldn't be closed again and subsequently merged because the two answers are the same. That was the reason why I thought that the edited question should remain closed.

Q: What happened to the "history" and "timeline" links on questions?

guntbertIn the course of this year I found two new links below questions history timeline Although I know I can access both via other paths (history: via the "edited" link, timeline: https://askubuntu.com/posts/#####/timeline) I found the explicit links useful. Why don't I see them any more?

@karel, yes, I gathered as much. My concern was ssh-problem vs vnc-problem, but I didn't think about merging the two - seems like a good idea. I am going to retract my reopen-vote.

@guntbert While we're still on this topic you are invited to check out this other chat room which I frequent: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/3877/raiders-of-the-lost-downboat where reviews are discussed on a daily basis.

@karel Ah, so the purpose of Raiders got extended beyond abandoned questions - good idea, will make sure to visit it more frequently

11:19 AM
@guntbert It's half of a dual chat room together with this chat room: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/66387/island-of-castaway-thoughts so users can say whatever they want and the chattier threads get migrated to the Island of castaway thoughts.

I admit I find it odd how a question that was clearly stated, on topic and included the details needed to answer it was apparently interesting enough to generate this debate on closing it as a dupe and yet nobody took the time to give it an upvote.

noted, thks
btw: I find no way to retract my reopen vote - when I click on the reopen link I get the same dialog as before

Hmm, then there probably isn't one.

RandomTechI'm doing a find by all files with certain extension and then i copy them to a certain folder, but most of them are override because they have the same name. 12:21 PM
@terdon Wanna draw attention to this question
It includes a little swearing, but seems off-topic too.

What they're trying to ask might be answerable but it seems rather vague to me. Are they asking why the decision was made? Are they asking how to file a bug or feature request in general? Specifically an upstream bug or feature request? It also refers obliquely to "all the other posts on the topic," but doesn't say what any of them are or give specific information about them.

@AJ OK. But please use flags for this sort of thing.

A J
Already done. But asking if I should edit or flag it.

Ah. Both :)
Although I don't understand what they're on about.
Is this some sort of nautilus thing? I don't use GUI file managers.

I just VTC as unclear
remember guys, DON'T FEED THE TROLLS :P

12:25 PM
Personally I think the "WTF" isn't vulgar enough to be worth editing out unless you're making other changes that improve the post, but if I encountered an edit suggestion that removed or reworded it without harming the post in any way, I wouldn't hesitate to approve it.
The post needs a lot of work to be answerable here anyway. In spite of being where the first question mark is, the "WTF?" isn't really what they're asking (or if so then it's unclear and primarily opinion-based). I don't think the post is rude/abusive though if that's what you mean.

No, I wouldn't call it rude/abusive either
What is this about? What left sidebar? Are you referring to a file manager? What file manager? To the Gnome DE? What is your actual question? Are you just asking how to report an issue to the Gnome developers? That isn't really related to Ubuntu so isn't on topic here. — terdon ♦ 38 secs ago

Thanks. I wasn't sure how best to comment; now I don't have to. :)

A J
@terdon I'd not either. Just flagged it for VTC.

Cool

could be duped i guess to this one askubuntu.com/questions/256986/…
i actually hit it already with VTC unclear so if someone wants to put it up the link is a potential dupe target

12:33 PM
@Videonauth Is that solution still relevant? It's quite old and some of the comments state the option has been removed. Others state it's been reinstated, but what's the current status?

works for me at least

@Videonauth Does that put a tree in the sidebar or just allow you to expand directories on the right hand side pane?

right hand pane expansion of directories
and if you switch off the side bar its pretty nice
@terdon all the options on that dupe target still work, and for each kind of the different nautiluses is a solution there, only 17.10 small style is missing but still the information from the others would be enough for a clever person to figure out how to do it on their newer ubuntu

@Videonauth Cool. Closed as a dupe

A J
Cool!

12:47 PM
I still wonder why people can get so much frustrated of computers and usage
:)
as if asking WT*? and half way cursing would bring them far

A J
well, they want computers to work as they want to use it.

sure but half way cursing doesnt get me answer, intelligent questions get me intelligent answers :)

A J
But since it wouldn't always, therefore this frustration and cursing.

people forgetting that on the other side of internet are also only people

A J
@Videonauth yeah cursing never works.

12:52 PM
and trust me i was often at a point where i wanted to punch into my monitor :D
but maybe the calm comming with age, i dont know

A J
@Videonauth same here.
but I googled all and learned how to solve more than half the problems in the simplest way.
now everybody come to me with their computer problems.
But I know Windows only and have zero clue about Ubuntu.

@AJ Obligatory XKCD:
'Hey Megan, it's your father. How do I print out a flowchart?'
2

A J
That's gonna be on the wall. :D

I showed it to my almost-70-year-old father yesterday and he actually laughed and printed it out immediately with no prompting, bless 'im!

@AJ You can use WSL on Windows 10. You can even ask some questions about it here! :)

1:00 PM
@terdon definitively star worthy

A J
@EliahKagan That sounds a good idea, but I didn't upgrade my old laptop with Windows 7 to Windows 10, so I suppose that's not an option. :)
Anyway, my friend installed Ubuntu 12 as a secondary OS on Windows computer.
It hid the partition where it was installed.

I might be biased here, but trash windows and install linux :) thats what i did and i not regret it yet after 2 years

A J
Well, I have been using it for like 15 years.

@Videonauth how long had you been using Windows when you switched?

i was a windows user too since windows 1
yes one as in one not missing a zero
speaking of the version which has fit on three floppy disks

A J
1:05 PM
great

@AJ No it didn't! Windows can't see most filesystem types by default. It isn't hidden in any way. I don't know of any other OS other than Windows that has this limitation. But it's a problem with Windows not knowing filesystems, not with Linux hiding anything.
Which is not to say you should switch. Use whatever you like, whatever works for you.
I just wanted to set the record straight on the technical aspect.

A J
@terdon Ohh. But uninstalling Ubuntu didn't bring it back. He had to replace the HDD.

@AJ Oh man. No he didn't. He just had to reformat it if he wanted Windows to see it.
He replaced the HDD instead of formatting?

A J
@terdon Because he didn't want to remove Windows. And the support center was unable to help.

Next time, just use a partition manager, that would have shown it.
@AJ Wow. There was absolutely no reason to remove windows. He only needed to reformat the Linux partition.

1:08 PM
what a great support center then lol

Yeah. . . Typical "help center" where they read the answers from a book.
Poor guy though.

yep because read monkeys are cheaper than real tech people

A J
@terdon Seriously? But I guess since Windows didn't show it, he was unable to format it and thus had to replace it. He might not know about the Partition Manager.

yeah the partition manger in windows is kinda hidden in the sysadmin menu

A J
Though I did work on Linux, but only for learning Shell Programming.
@Videonauth yep. just type diskmgmt.msc in run

1:14 PM
o/ jacob

Now this is fun: "Downvote there is no such directory in 16.04. Please mention ubuntu version your solution is for. *" In other words: "*Please mention in 2015 that you answer will not work anymore in 2016" askubuntu.com/a/631342/72216
Hey @Videonauth! long time no see.

A J
I am favoriting this room to join it again in one-click.
But gotta go now. See y'all later. :)

Later!

@AJ Yes, seriously :) And no, Windows (I assume you mean explorer) won't show it. You need a partition manager to manage your disks.

@JacobVlijm unbelievable

1:17 PM
@JacobVlijm That's the right thing to do. If an answer is no longer relevant it should be downvoted so it isn't shown at the top any more. I don't see anything wrong there.
Just edit it in since the downvoter was nice enough to explain why.

Sorry to say, but that is silly. An answer should be valued and voted on in its own context. @terdon
....which was 15- something then

@JacobVlijm Context changes. You don't vote to reward/punish the poster. You vote based on whether this answer is useful now. If it isn't, then the answer should be downvoted since the entire point of the voting system is to help users get the Right Answer®. So if it is no longer correct, downvoting will help show that.
2
Yes, it would have been better if they'd simply edited your answer to indicate that it's obsolete. But a downvote is also helpful.

@terdon then you will have quite a job, downvoting all non- cli answers, older then a few years.

@JacobVlijm I'm not saying you should go out of your way to find them. I am simply pointing out that if the context has changed and an answer is no longer useful, it helps everyone to make that clear. And downvoting is one of the ways you can make that clear.
Perhaps not the best, but one of them.

i would have to admit i not even find them right now in my home directory but then i only altered the default profile to fit my needs

1:25 PM
Not my logic, the context of that question was 15.04. Sure, if an answer becomes dangerous or otherwise harmful, a downvote + explanation might be useful, have done that. If not, either edit or leave alone. In this case, an edit would take less time then what he (or she) did now. @terdon

@JacobVlijm Agreed. So why don't you edit?

Sure, if I'll finish in chat :) @terdon

All you needed to do is answer with "Thanks, answer updated" or even better, ignore the bloody downvote!

Yeah, I know. But hey, I am a drift frog (Google translate sais, but I doubt that is English.)

@JacobVlijm lol well it is English, but it doesn't mean anything :)

1:30 PM
WHAT, you're saying I don't mean anything? (kidding)

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! (Well at least all the Americans here :D)

@AndroidDev Happy Thanksgiving!

oli you still around?
or even better to ask @terdon maybe, here is a guy who wants to be migrated, i flagged for mod attention too, but i guess since you're here --> askubuntu.com/questions/979221/…

Done
@Videonauth migration has a few issues. First, it requires a mod and second, it keeps the datestamp of the question so it appears on the new site as though it were asked X hours ago instead of having just arrived. It is usually easier and better to suggest to the OP that they delete their question and then post it on the target site instead.

@terdon ok

This information can be easily found on the internet already. I don't think that this site should just replicate easy to find content from somewhere else, by having somebody ask a seemingly on-topic question and get it answered by the OP itself it at the same time. For me this looks more like a scheme to get some upvotes by replicating interesting content from the internet at this site. — Steffen Ullrich yesterday

user136984
Why do they have the tick box and link to the official guidance (which I followed all of) if they don't want this sort of thing?

@ParanoidPanda I think you did the right thing there, sharing knowledge this way is strongly encouraged on the SE network, at least last time I checked:
> To be crystal clear, it is not merely OK to ask and answer your own question, it is explicitly encouraged.
Jeff Atwood on July 01, 2011

The FAQ has contained one key bit of advice from the very beginning:

It’s also perfectly fine to ask and answer your own question, as long as you pretend you’re on Jeopardy! — phrase it in the form of a question.

So …

if you have a question that you already know the answer to

if you’d like to document it in public so others (including yourself) can find it later

it is OK to ask, and answer, your own question on a relevant Stack Exchange site.

To be crystal clear, it is not merely OK to ask and answer your own question, it is explicitly encouraged. …

Just because of one stubborn idiot who doesn't understand how the site works and then a load of sheep who probably didn't even read it properly in the review queue.

user136984
But I guess that that is how the site works! ;P

@ParanoidPanda Just edit it and it will get out of the cv queue :P

user136984
8:44 PM
Really?

Yes it will. I don't find the link now, but it was discussed on (our) meta once…

@ParanoidPanda Isn't that basically what "don't accept 3rd party cookies" does?

user136984
@ByteCommander: No

user136984
Read the description.

user136984
There is documentation about it on the Mozilla site if you know what to search for.

user136984
8:47 PM
But considering that they made up the name First-Party Isolation and then didn't announce it nobody is going to search for it.

user136984
That rejects third-party cookies. This isolates advertising cookies on a per-domain basis so that they don't cross track. Regardless of accepting the cookies.

Hmm, I guess I'll try the add-on then.
So am I right that if I visit e.g. site1.com, which sets a adwebsite.com cookie, and visit site2.com which does the same, both sites will only see their own 3rd party cookie from adwebsite and never know of the existence of the other?

user136984
That's correct.

Do you use the new 57 already btw?
I think I saw it on a Win machine today and almost fell out of my chair due to how ugly it was
Especially their new NoScript is totally unusable and has huge graphical icons and it opened warning popups looking more dangerous than some cryptolockers...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Yes, I've got the dark compact theme and it is actually quite nice. You do get used to it. I guess that as I had that before the design change isn't so large. But it is a little ugly I must admit in terms of the menus. They are less homely than before. I feel like I'm almost using a browser wearing Chrome for clothes.

user136984
8:56 PM
And yes, NoScript, not only offering less protection, is terrible.

user136984
But I'm sure that a few bug reports could sort that out.

I guess I'll stick around with sudo apt-mark hold firefox for a little longer...

user136984
Given that it's actually missing out the "temporarily allow this site" functionality which used to be quite useful.

@ParanoidPanda The SE network can be really harsh to newbies, I had a number of similar experiences where (IMO of course) I posted a good question or answer and it got just destroyed by high-reps.

Hmm, can't install the FPI add-on, it's stuck at "Verifying" for minutes now
Also only 46 users so far o_O

user136984
8:58 PM
@ByteCommander: Probably not such a good idea not to upgrade. As there will be important security fixes in the new version.

user136984
@ByteCommander: That's because nobody really knows about this feature. I told you so. :D

user136984
It was 15 users when I got it the day before yesterday.

yeah, sooner or later I'll have to go up to 57 or down to 52 ESL

My Q&A probably helped it.

Welp, I won't be one of those users. It simply refuses to install.

user136984
8:59 PM
@dessert: It's stupid though given that I've been here for a while now and have a reasonable amount of rep on this site.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Why not do the about:config way?

user136984
There's really not much difference.

user136984
Apart from one is an add-on setting it and the other is you.

I'd have liked to try the "soft" solution first which I can quickly disable with a click, in case something stops working

user136984
Well, you can still enable the option in about:config which makes it lighter.

user136984
