@Videonauth hi!
half past nine in germany… ;)

idc :P
I'm awake since 4 am
anyone here who uses 17.10?

I have a Lubuntu 17.10 VM...

It can't easily answer that using my VM, because Lubuntu doesn't use GDM by default.

9:05 AM
yep all i found was a lightdm.comf file but no lightdm at all
and a greeter.dconf-defaults in /etc/gdm3

no lightdm installed in my custom instalation of ubuntu, and neither in my pure 17.10 VM

Did I get this right you guys actually don't use Ubuntu but just have some VMs to test your answers? :D

I don't use 17.10. Except in a VM.

thats it
let me quick test this

9:08 AM
I have a physical machine with 16.04 LTS that I use heavily, and also one with 14.04 LTS that I use significantly, though mostly as a file server.

nope does not bring me anywhere
system does not even boot up
or better to say does boot up but no greeter comes up

Can't you just check what packages are installed?

And for gdm? Or maybe it's called gdm3.

it is gdm3 ;)

9:21 AM
Also, you're looking for what display manager is being used, right? As far as I am aware, the term "greeter" is specific to LightDM, where it refers to any of a number of separate interfaces that LightDM can use for its graphical login screen.

i tried actually the solution on the page you just posted here but that does not seem to work

Hmm. I'm not sure what to do then.
You rebooted or restarted GDM after making the change?

reboot
and all i see then is a purple screen :)
i think it is due to canonical changed the paths for certain things

Q: Install multiple linux distro in parallel

DebianI am having Ubuntu and I want to install opensuse in parallel, is it good to keep both bootloader in MBR, or I should keep opensuse bootloader in other partition which I allocated to it during installation. In which case I will see options to login into ubuntu/opensuse.

@Videonauth Do you mind testing whether Super+D is the default shortcut to minimize all windows in 17.10?

@dessert seems it is

@Videonauth thanks!

@dessert askubuntu.com/a/979773/522934 this was a hard one to figure out
thanks to canonical who again brewed their own soup
all i could see was it didnt start up when i edited the line in dconf or in /etc/gdm3
till i went to launchpad and checked the bugs

@Videonauth I can tell – nicely done!

weird thing is changing the line in dconf did not had any effect at all and i think thats another bug
but changing the line in theconfig file had the effect that the system would not boot up at all :D

11:09 AM
one can never file enough bugs ;)

yeah later today, im going to figure out which packet to file the other one on
i guess its dconf-editor
im in for a break now
already done two answers today
ah no almost 4 answers already today
one is 13 hours old i did this before heading to bed

News from the review audits. I tried to comment on a question and got

I hope my American friends had a good Thanksgiving.

and what about your other friends?

I hope they had a good Thursday?
Today is the day I start playing Christmas music.

>_<
is it that time of the year again...

YES.

@guntbert That's good news!

@guntbert yeah that one is odd, had that happen only once till now

@Videonauth I see it more "good" (like @dessert said) than "odd" - it made me smile :-)

6:23 PM
@guntbert well then we can call it even :P
to be honset in 99.9% of all cases the audits are dead giveaways

this question was actually pretty fun to answer :) askubuntu.com/a/979899/522934

Bonus points if we somehow knew his IP address and could put it behind a paywall for him.

@TheWanderer Unfortunately that was an Obama project. No petitions have received replies since Trump took office.

hmm

I'm honestly surprised the site is still up. Normally most of whitehouse.gov gets removed when a new president takes office.

@Videonauth :D I found this one particularly funny:

A: How do you install Ubuntu on an Intel RST RAID-0?

FabbySometimes it's better to tell a user: Please don't do this! My machine came pre-installed with an Intel RST RAID-0 Windows 10 installation and the first thing I did was did was to remove the RAID-0 as no RAID is better then RAID-0!!! I followed the following steps to accomplish this: Take a ...

Meh... Don't ask: I'm still working...
(but shutting down the work machine now)
Some idiot in Latin America just mailed the entire business unit an email to send him the IPs for some stuff that isn't even in our data centers.
Tons of people will lose time on this.

Q: A command to list all apps that aren't installed via package managers or deb file?

answerSeekerIs there a command that can list all apps that aren't install via package managers or deb file? Packages installed using bins, shs, runs, tar.gzs, appimages etc. Bash or python script would do.

IMO a question beginning with “Is there” can very well be answered with a “No.” as long as it's explained.

Q: What has happened?

GaryI am trying to install a new installation of ubuntu but im having problems, I end up with this screen. I have never had any problems installing ubuntu before this, can someone explain what this screen means and how do I get my ubuntu working? thanks.

I just updated Firefox to 57
it's unusable
at least together with NoScript, I get crashes and complete rendering failures all the time
Not to mention that it's really ugly

10:32 PM
I also really miss Tab Mix Plus

@ByteCommander I just advised my father to just try it – what have I done?

10:48 PM
Well, remove NoScript before upgrading at least.
It breaks everything for me.
Without that, it works at least.
Still ugly
I installed uMatrix now as a replacement for NoScript
Gonna take a while to get used to it, it's muuuch more flexible and complex.

Sergiy?

No, a RL friend. But Sergy could profit from that too.
