Uh sorry, yes of course.
I meant the "bonuses (100)" bit

What we have a problem with is mainstream news trying to find stories that will get ratings. Anything that creates controversy or what conservative morals would consider appalling gets on the news.

@MarcoCeppi have google not yet approved/rejected chromify-osd?
@fluteflute Not yet. I'm starting to worry it won't pass inspection :\ $5 potentially wasted
@MarcoCeppi that would be a pain!
Can someone ping me please?
@fluteflute No! Go away :)
@MarcoCeppi Hmm my chromify-osd is broken and horrible chromenessy ones are back...
All I'll say is wait for the officially packaged one to come out. I've setup the auto-update URL, etc so when fixes and updates come out it'll be rolled out to you all

I think we need a new unity-qt tag
unity-2d?
yeah unity-2d makes more sense to me
yeah 2d
also I dunno if you guys say mark recommending it on questions where people have problems with 10.10
so if you guys want to go through the unity tag and link those together that would be swell
<--- leaving for airport
hope you guys enjoy unity this week! It's been a tough one!
\o/ yay the qt trolls will be happy with a qt unity...
only people like me are still furious that there is no future for standard gnome-panel/etc -_
@RolandTaylor there is a future...
16:46
@fluteflute an empty one :/
I mean gnome-panel isn't going to improve much or anything... but then has it really changed much in the last few years?
it could improve a ton with a little effort
or they could just have done like KDE and created an improvement for the DESKTOP/LAPTOP form factor instead of creating the nonsense they call a shell
/rant off
@RolandTaylor you go improve it ;)
@fluteflute haha
every patch would be rejected if I even knew what I was doing :P
I'll probably just learn vala and write a better panel
Good luck ;)

@RolandTaylor I thought gnome-panel was staying as a desktop choice
@Oli it is - but it will not be getting a lot of love, so obviously in about 3 releases or so it will be dead :/

@RolandTaylor In fairness it hasn't had much more than regression-fixes in as long as I've been using it.
@Oli true, but that's the real problem
at least in ubuntu we've had the development of indicators etc
Oli
Oli
Not really. All its functionality (and opportunity to break) comes from the panel applets it holds. They're mostly light and easy to fix.
but the panel should have been either maintained or rethought as was done with KDE's panel

Q: Why was QT chosen for unity-2d and NUX for 3d?

JoãoHi! I would just like to know the reason(s) behind this decision (Pros./Cons. of using QT and NUX). What are the accessibility problems of QT? Thank you very much and keep on the awesome work! Ubuntu Rocks :D

Should that be two questions? I'm not sure if they're kinda related
it should be
also a bit confusing
btw what is NUX?
not sure
but the new unity depends on the nux package...

Jason SmithUnity uses a toolkit called Nux. Nux is an opengl toolkit designed to be run as both a standalone widget system, or embedded into existing opengl applications. Do we think @JorgeCastro 's addition of the nux tag is appropriate there?
You could say the nux tag refers to the answer, not to the question...
I can't use unity, because I can't open the "additional drivers" program to install my 3d drivers....
17:59
@DoR Thanks for adding a screenshot to that answer on unity-2d :)

A: What GUI toolkit will Ubuntu Unity use?

Nick HSUnity will still use GTK+, just without the GNOME desktop environment.

should we reword this answer?
honestly it sticks out like a sore thumb
and it's wrong
19:15
@Roland I don't see the problem with it personally :P
IMO the problem is, that it's not clear what the questioner meant. to me it sounds like "will my gtk+ apps work in unity" rather than "which toolkit was used to write unity"...

Q: Ubuntu finances and future of project

Sherlock HolmesWhat are the chances that Ubuntu will go belly up when Mark Shuttleworth's money runs out? In other words, how healthy are the finances of the Ubuntu sponsors Canonical? Is Ubuntu still losing money?

I think you're right... (after I spent some time asking it :P)
I reckon there's probably some use for a ubuntu-project tag but it;s not really worth creating because it's more of a meta-tag that would get needlessly appliesdto lots of things...
yeah
I wish I had normal votes
Because I would totally vote to close that. But it's more of an opinion than a bonified fact (Not exactly a duplicate).
mmm
have you ever suggested it?
Yeah, it was a huge outcry when beta sites came online
19:59
And they said no? :p
The end reason for not: "You're all moderators. So if you think it should be voted to close - you obviously think it should be closed - therefore just close it"
Which I understand where they're coming from...
Remember, 5 people can reopen what a mod closes
Hmm I'm just thinking that isn't quite a duplicate...
@badp But then the moderation team looks like douche bags because we closed something
20:01
@MarcoCeppi Moderators moderating, what douchebags
I would much rather be the one that pushes 2 - 4 votes over the edge than be too zealous
Unless it's super obvious. This one has some wiggle room
@badp I know, you would think so right? However, I'd like to be the enforcer of the communities will, not the police pushing back on the community. Rather an arm of it.

As we get more and more questions in Stack Overflow, the issue of duplicate questions becomes more pressing. The odds of any question being a duplicate, however small, increases with the total number of questions in the system. So it’s worth considering: what makes a question an exact duplicate? As I see it, there are three classes of duplicate questions, from most clear to least clear.

The impending launch of the serverfault.com private beta has interrupted work on this slightly, but better handling of accidental duplicate questions is currently very high on our priority list. We’d like to streamline this so it’s easier, with a friendly UI. (If you have ideas about what UI makes sense in this scenario, we’d love to hear it.) That said, we have implemented a moderator level function to merge duplicate questions — so if we determine two questions are accidental duplicates, we can merge them together without losing anything except the text of one of the questions; all comments and answers are preserved. …

Point #3 applies here I thinnk
@MarcoCeppi on Gaming we needed to discuss whether game recommendation questions should be allowed or not; mods didn't feel like pushing the envelope; we couldn't come to a consensus on meta or chat; we needed 3 months to come to a conclusion via a flawed poll.
Well - I kind of go off the basis. If someone can make a valid argument on Meta - and no one offers a decent rebutle. That's gold
The fact a user went to meta and posted shows that they're at least interested in the community.
We've had things like this happen. Where we've done it one way, user posts a different way to handle things and that was better than the first so we just naturally took it up

Q: Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

dandan78A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used...

There are a few tags on Stack Overflow that have bugged me for a long time. Namely:

But I could never quite articulate what, exactly, was wrong with these tags. It’s been bothering me more and more as time goes on. So much so, that about two months ago, I was compelled to ask on meta: Should we permanently remove the [subjective] tag?

There are some weak arguments in favor of keeping [subjective], but that’s about the best its proponents can muster. The arguments against it are much stronger. I felt Shog9 made the best case: …

@htorque I don't know what I mean (which is unusual for a grammar pedant like me)
@DoR it isn't a meta tag - it's an indicator like the color red for questions without an answer
ok, let's make those questions blue! :P
