@DoR I don't support that either :D
@TheX nothing is - unless he is married and I attract all the single "flies"

I;m not and I dont; cheat either....

then his wife might think the "flies" are attracted to him as well - and I'd be forced to laugh at a brother getting a beat down :D

if you attract flies, you can keep them...

lololololol
we need to stop trolling the chat - Marco is not here

why is marco's presence important?

4:02 AM
because we should be ticking an admin off if we are trolling
otherwise we troll without cause

oh... of course
what does this mean?

hmmm tough one
normally I install the newest version - but this case I might suggest keeping the current version

ok
holy snap
it was like a BSOD but Linux style...

DoR
4:09 AM
@RolandTaylor I voted down that answer, he clearly didn't read the question

@TheX o.o oh noes
@DoR ahh
I just noted myself :/
now my vote is locked

my bottom panel is gone...

D:!
@TheX restart gnome-panel (gnome-panel --replace)
@DoR check my slick unvoting measure - edit the question, add " . " - remove vote - edit again - remove " . "

You did this to me!

did it complete the update yet?

4:13 AM
no it is finishing

DoR
@RolandTaylor MacGuyver!

@DoR :D
@TheX when it finishes restart gnome-panel ^^

I will

I've had panels and other components go nuts like that during updates

actually it will probably make me restart the computer eh?

4:14 AM
I guess that is why you are forced to restart on windows
yeah it will

should I be worried by this message?
(udisks:12303): udisks-WARNING **: Couldn't enumerate devices: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

not really

now it has just stopped working...
been sitting here for like 4 mins
Installing new version of config file /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ...

@TheX sure it stopped working?
dpkg is notorious for sitting and doing nothing :D

it doesn't seem to be doing anything

4:23 AM
@TheX check system monitor to be sure
it might be waiting on something

I looked everything was dead
down to that one last package...
and it won't install

is dpkg in the list?

nope

O.o
it died

I noticed :P

4:26 AM
I wanted to be sure so I don't run you into trouble

you already have... :P
I don't know why I am blaming you... I guess just because I don't want to take the blame :-P

it's okay - I get blamed for A LOT irl for no reason :P

4:46 AM
pie

DoR

LOL
-talking to una chica- going offline
cya ^^

DoR
@RolandTaylor later

5:36 AM
back for a public service announcement...
PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
bye now :)

DoR

2 hours later…
7:23 AM
@StefanoPalazzo hey!

7:46 AM
where can I view the upstart logs?

don't know if there are any logs? you can boot adding "--verbose" to the kernel line of the grub entry - this should add debug information to dmesg/syslog (or was it daemon.log?)

@htorque ok, i think i have the wrong info. when i say service apache 2 start | stop
thats the upstart, right?

8:54 AM
it's either upstart or upstart using an older job in /etc/init.d/ - if apache fails to start, shouldn't it have its own error logs? (something like /var/log/apache/*)

9:08 AM
unity-qt really looks like the old mutter unity
it's nice, although there needs to be a way to rearrange launcher icons (no easy way to do this right now)

@htorque yes, there are logs for each service in /var/logs/serviceName

and you don't find what you're looking for there?

10:09 AM
@htorque i can, but its not a lot of info, like why its not starting

1 hour later…
11:10 AM
Is there any application to list all codec details of a particular video file?

11:40 AM
@karthick87 I think VLC does that

11:55 AM
Uh oh, Firefox 4.0 on Linux won't have hardware acceleration. Reason: X drivers are "disastrously" buggy. :( osnews.com/story/24264/…

@iamsid is it true?

@KaustubhP Yes.

@StefanoPalazzo wow, nice desktop! oh.. right. nice rendering too!

It's not quite the same thing, i think they are talking about accelerating drawing the websites themselves, but anyway How cool that you can do this in a browser these days

12:03 PM
@StefanoPalazzo are your graphics settings maxed out?

What settings?

@iamsid if you're using google chrome (I think chromium as well), use --enable-webgl

@StefanoPalazzo Sank you!

@StefanoPalazzo Appearance > Visual Effects > extra

12:05 PM
:372280, no, I have them on normal
I find the wobbly windows a bit distracting :)

"Bit" is an understatement! :-E

@StefanoPalazzo ahh, right. but the panel shadows look very nice!

wobbly windows lead to far better user experience :P

Ahah, Zygote Media group!

12:08 PM
wobbly windows lead to far better user experience for users with wobbly heads.

:D

:E

Oh hai @htorque; thank you for commenting on the cat << EOF thing. your downvote's completely justified
i just really liked the answer :P

12:11 PM
I hate downvoters who do not comment. (I used to be one of 'em.)

something doesn't work right; the poor lady doesn't have any texture

Happy Birrrrrrrrrrrrrrthday Wikipedia! :)

@StefanoPalazzo i didn't comment on it first, because the reason for it was obvious to me :D

@iamsid oh right! Happie burthday xD

12:13 PM
?

^ Best expressive statement in the room ;) J/K!

It's been 10 years! I feel like a relic.

Another message from our dear Jimmy Wales, what a day! :P

I HATE PEOPLE WHO KID. ALL WHO KID SUXS!!!111

you must be joking

12:17 PM
^^ Who? Me?

Many problems in physics do not have differentiable (classical) solutions (shock waves), but do have WEAK solutions. http://bit.ly/ayOk0F
I am starting to believe there is nothing more toxic to a Q&A community than the hypothetical "what if" question. Pure BS.
We haven't had much of "what if" questions on Ask Ubuntu, have we?

Are those the ones that I'd like to tag with [future]?
like "will unity run on my toaster" or "will btrfs replace ext4"

I don't know.
Probably yes. I'll see if there's something on meta.

we do actually have a hand-full of people here who can predict the future. Even though I don't like these questions, they have gotten great answers
4
A: Will the Compiz version's dash be the same as the current dash?

Stefano PalazzoI don't think anything like that has been decided as of yet. The best way to predict the future is to invent it. :-)

12:25 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Haha, I like the way you put it. :)
@KaustubhP: India won the toss and have chosen to bat.

I thought that was clever, but then I got Shuttleworth'd :-)

@StefanoPalazzo Your most impressive answer, imo, is the one on atheism.se! Masterclass.

Hai all

which one is that?
hello @MichealH Welcome to the askubuntu chat :-)

I got a Bot to post all new questions in #askubuntu on irc.frrenode.net :)
Its wriitten in Python
Come along :)

12:28 PM
@StefanoPalazzo

A: Is atheism a religion?

Stefano PalazzoI suppose the question you're really asking is Do atheists take it on faith, that there is no god. That depends on whether the question of its or their existence is a scientific hypothesis or not. Atheists take it on evidence that there is no god - or rather lack thereof. Arguments for: The e...

Oh yeah, that was hard work.

I need to work on my writing skills.

@iamsid wow, i didnt know you follwed cricket

@MichealH the last new question reported by your bot is 14 hours old?

@KaustubhP Both teams: South Africa and India are being stupid, in my opinion.
They should be rotating players. WC ain't far away.

12:37 PM
@iamsid thats true
just hope they dont burn out.

The thing about Arsenal is, they always try and walk it in.

I don't care about Arsenal or EPL. (in an indignant tone)
I <3 La Liga.

<3 FCB
(NOT fc bayern :D)

@htorque You're the man.
:D

12:42 PM
@StefanoPalazzo lmao!
i remember that one!

:) British sarcasm > countryName sarcasm. (and Kaustub is !funny.)

true, true.

@Stefano, No It gets the RSS and tells people when there are new questiond

but it's a bit late innit?
you can get the latest question with the API very easily

@iamsid wrt, moss and football, are you sid, and cricket?

12:47 PM
I am Sid, and I am an Indian. :)

indian food is great... "mildly hot" translates to "die, european, die!"

(Does it sounds wrongly cheesy like: My "name" is Khan, and I'm not a...)

:D

@htorque Are you Spanish/Latin-American?

@iamsid no, i'm just using a fake name :P

12:49 PM
:P
"2010: Mostly Windows free - salvation is near!"

@iamsid rly, didnt know that. no it dont sound cheesy! @htorque is deutsch i think!

i think last time i booted windows was in early oct. '10

I boot it every Monday through Friday (at gunpoint).

:D

Not on my computers though.

12:54 PM
@MichealH I've hacked together a generator that forever yields new questions as they come it: paste.ubuntu.com/554352 you should have to build in some error handling and register an API key for it of course

I just have W7, for my kid bros who cant use Ubuntu. Yet. MUAHA!

My parents picked up Ubuntu pretty quick!
My parents need nothing more than VLC, Google Chrome, Rhythmbox, and Google Docs.

@iamsid what are GEGLS?

An Ubuntu easter egg.

whats with tHe cows with 5 limbs?

1:02 PM
And bullet-pumping udders.

lol, yeah.

@Stefano, Its okay, RSS works :) - paste.ubuntu.com/554358

@KaustubhP: M Vijay c Morkel b Tsotsobe 16 (32b 3x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

bloody hell.
whats the score?

1/21 (8)
No!

1:05 PM
cricket is the most complicated game in the word

@iamsid lol, that was the MMDDYY equivalent :P
@iamsid ainnit 21/1 (8) ?

No!
@StefanoPalazzo It's easy. :)

@StefanoPalazzo It just asaid theres a nex Question ;)

totally easy :D

1:09 PM
@StefanoPalazzo srsly, its easy.

even fielding positions are crazy

lul :D

Silly mid-on!
:P
Jajajaja. :P

@htorque any kid who is a fan can tell those positions by heart :)

1:10 PM
Silly point. :P

@iamsid even that site states the score as 28/1, not 1/28, which is the american way of doing things. create your own formats and measures :/

wickets/runs is the Aussie way.
I prefer 2010.1.15 :P

lol, cricketfail.

I love the slow/medium/fast format, and hence 2011.1.15 and 1/28

what slow/medium/fast format? you talking about local trains?

1:15 PM
:P
2003-11-09: the ISO 8601 international standard orders the components of a date like this.
I like ISO formats. Metric systems.

oh, please dont give me ISOs. I need practicality

Practicality is subjective! For an American 1/31/2011 is practical.

I was brought up in India, DDMMYYYY is practical for me!
thats what!

That's why ISO standards are created, to create standards that eliminate universal confusion.

yeah, like kilobyte = 1000 vs 1024 byte... thanks ISO for clearing things up :D

1:20 PM
@htorque i hate you! :P

i thought i'm the man :D

Only when you're supporting FCB.

;P

And u also have the IEC formats :)

How would I get in contact with George Castro? :)

1:25 PM
DM him on twitter?

His twitter is? :)
Does he have IRC?

I like the chat's preview system. Awesome.

I made a clock :P

58?

1:28 PM
It's metric!
or "decimal"

hh?

the day is divided into 100 hours, each of 100 minutes of 100 seconds

Eww!
I wanna stay sane. :P
(When I sound rude, I'm kidding.)
I find it strange when some guy can answer questions on bash scripting but asks simple questions on basic commands.

^^

this is a bit nicer
I desperately want to add the time on mars, but it's really hard to calculate

1:35 PM
UTC vs GMT, what's more generally accepted?

they are to all intents and purposes the same

Know something interesting?

@iamsid I guess I dont know. what is it?

Do you have an analog clock handy?

1:37 PM
nope.

Set the time in the analog clock to UTC and rotate the clock upside down, you get Indian Standard Time, and vice versa.
2

@iamsid awesome!

My god!
I mean the hour hand is a bit off, but OMG (: very cool

Hehe. :)

I am gonna tweet this OMGFact! @iamsid do u have twitface?
:P

1:39 PM
I am an anti-social.
I hate human beings.
:P

glad you have us bots to chat with you xD

Haha. :) Marco will terminate me.

/quit
sudo mv /dev/null whats wrong with that?

sudo mv /iamsid /dev/null
@KaustubhP /dev/null == Black Hole.

I kow about that, its equivalent to an electrical ground.
but u removed it cuz u had a parameter missing, thats all right?

1:46 PM
63/2 (17.5) Kohli runout.

F! Run fatty run!
he doesnt seem to be on the "fastrack" ehehehe.

He was short by miles. David Miller got him with a direct hit.
Lol, irony!

Silly Kohli.

@fluteflute @MarcoCeppi Is this answer fine?

A: How do I use bash's "<<" operator?

jgbelacquaUse info bash and then search (type '/' followed by '<<') . Here's a partial quote: Here Documents This type of redirection instructs the shell to read input from the current source until a line containing only delimiter (with no trailing blanks) is seen. All of the lines...

info bash

@iamsid Because it just quotes somewhere else?
I think it's fine, especially because it teaches people how to do similar things in the future

@fluteflute Yes, I too think that's fine.
That LMGTFY answer was plain rude.

Yeah we don't want that here

Q: Ban lmgtfy (let me google that for you) links

John NolanI've just asked a question on stack-overflow which was a prime candidate for googling. I admit it was a poor question and with a little bit of research I would have found the answer. What annoyed me was someone in the comments put a let me google that for you link. It got right up my nose. I fin...

@iamsid Yes, because that's not saying HEY look at info bash - but it says here is where I got the below documentation, info bash
I do something similar with From the [X man page](manpagelink):

@MarcoCeppi Perfect. Now I get it.

Then put the snippet from the man page. That way they can get the solution now - and know where to get additional information in the future

Teaching a (wo)man to fish in a dignified way.

I think Google has started indexing our content hardcore

2:17 PM
Yes. Delay is around 2-3 minutes.
w.r.t. Questions

Well our traffic as a result is, in one word: Awesome :D

:)

Indeed I see questions posted a few minutes ago and Google them... and find the question as the top result!

RE Wobbly Windows @StefanoPalazzo: It gets ALL the ladies. Everytime I show off wobbly windows they're all like Weak knees: CAN YOU INSTALL THAT ON MY COMPUTER

Marco, is there a screenshot of how this site looked like during beta?

2:18 PM
@iamsid Yeah, somewhere around here
It looks just like the other public beta sites though

@Marco hehe :D

Q: How to deal with Google questions

I've seen a lot of questions that can be answered with a simple Google search. For questions like this, an answer can be found by just cut'n'pasting the question directly into the Google search field and scanning the first few hits. Every new user wants to try out the feature and ask a question...

FOUND IT! @JorgeCastro made a video when we were in beta
2

Oh! All beta sites look alike.

Yup - the theme is called "Sketchy"

2:23 PM
HELP! some files in my home directory have been mysteriously changed to size 0 bytes

That video was back when @Jorge only had 900 rep :)

And Oli?

Less than me :D I'll wait for him to get to the users page

Hahaha

I don't think Oli got really in to it until a few weeks before launch

2:26 PM
Oli and Jorge: Member for 5 months.

I know for a while I was the highest rep user on the site

All the folders have a file by the same name as the sub-folders. ANd I lost my data :/ i.imgur.com/jm1Nq.png

After public launch I kind of became less active in answers

@MarcoCeppi But you're the Chat W* :P

True, if I stop talking and start answering I might be able to catch up :P

2:29 PM
@KaustubhP google.com/search
:P

@iamsid lmgtfy :D

@MarcoCeppi I can't post lmgtfy links in chat! google.com/search

Okay so I had around 2.6k rep at the time of the video and Oli had 2.4k
@iamsid It's a plugin on chat - because lmgtfy is a site that jerks and myself use :D

Good 'ol days. :)

do you guys write opensource software ?

2:31 PM
@WilliamK I do occasionally. Rather I license some of the software I write with open source licenses

Lol true! Sometimes gpl is longer than the code. :P

Okay, need to get back to work. I'm going to be pretty disappeary today

Hmm bad timing to ask you as you say you have to go back to work...

@fluteflute Sunday is the last day for that :)

@Mr.Taylor: Hi.

2:34 PM
Saturday - Work for work, Sunday - Finish APTURL for MPT to review and upload :D

Nice! Look forward to it :)

No weekend?
Oh yes, you're a roebaat.

megatronousya the monitor only had the problems thnx neways guys

2:49 PM
@GeorgeEdison Does StackBot check if a question is closed before posting it?

Is it fair that some users gain reputation on closed questions?

@iamsid Yes, just because it's closed doesn't mean it's a "bad" question. The same happens for the inverse. Downvoting a closed question to drive home that it's not a good one

@iamsid duplicates for instance?

Yes.

For example "will Marco Ceppi ever run out of funny pictures" is a good question, but offtopic.

2:56 PM
That's ontopic on meta ;)

it's on topic for MarcoCeppi.SE

It's on-topic on meta.askmarco.com

The answer is, and always will be, no
ask.marcoceppi.com :D
Maybe after APTURL tomorrow I'll put something stupid there

Lol! I didn't know that it existed for real!
You're a living legend.
:)

Naw, I own Marcoceppi.com - so it's really just ego inflation. But we had a discussion like this a few weeks ago
UGH
