3:00 AM
lol . . .

A 3 watt laser?
What could possibly be better than a 3 watt laser?

one of my vendors found a IBM Model M keyboard in their recycling pile..

a 4 watt laser ? XD @NathanOsman
Oh, wow !

@Serg I haz been bested.

And he saved it for me because I had mentioned I missed having a good solid mechanical keyboard...

3:01 AM
@TheXed you might actually find a use for the next version of NitroShare. How would you like to have an app on all your PCs (at school) that lets you drag-and-drop files to instantly transfer them... from any platform?
Puts on salesman hat.

what platforms?

All of them >:)
Windows, Linux, and macOS.
And Android is undergoing testing.

ChromeOS?

Can't ChromeOS run Android apps?
If so, then heck yes.

Because I now have more chromebooks then windows computers..

3:03 AM
Lol.

Limited Chromebooks...

Of course the student Chromebooks would be supported...but not mine...

Wait.
> "Outbound unicast connections from an Android app to the internet should mostly work as-is; but in general, inbound connections are blocked. Multicast or broadcast packets from Android will not be forwarded to the LAN through the firewall."
What the actual heck, Google.
Thanks for nothing.

Wait..so does that mean you can't download anything?

3:05 AM
> "As a special exception to the multicast restriction, Chrome OS runs a service that forwards mDNS traffic between Android and the LAN interface, so the standard Network Service Discovery APIs are the recommended way to discover other devices on the LAN segment."
So network discovery will still sort-of work...
But why block incoming connections?

@NathanOsman because they are inherently insecure...

But they should have an option to manually open a port.
I mean, that's how TCP works?

But they don't

(I am not about to try implementing STUN.)

My wife just complained about how loud my keyboard is o.O
Can NitroShare be used with BASH?

3:08 AM
complain about how loud she is get a louder keyboard ...

@JourneymanGeek I don't think you can get a louder keyboard then this..

@TheXed The new one can - but remember that it runs on Windows natively.

Model M?

@NathanOsman no I was just thinking about my rpi...
@JourneymanGeek yup

@TheXed Yup, it runs on ARM.
If I remember correctly, it's even in my PPA.

3:12 AM
Because I was just thinking it would be awesome to dump some files to a directory or whatever and then there they are on my webserver...

@TheXed NitroShare will definitely be able to do that.
I'll ping you when I have something to test.

@NathanOsman awesome...

@TheXed You an Android or iPhone guy?

@NathanOsman I have had both, but currently android...and windows 10 mobile...

Cool, so you can even push files to your Pi from Android.
Windows 10 Mobile... might have to look into supporting the platform down the road.

3:16 AM
@NathanOsman UWP...then it can be installed on desktop, and mobile...
one app many platforms...

@TheXed Bear in mind that NitroShare does need low level socket access to work. No idea if UWP apps can do that.

Look at me being productive and sh*t today . . . I got myself new monitor, put tempered glass cover on my phone ( which I bought like last year ), took photos and filled out passport renewal application.

@NathanOsman yeah I am not sure...

@Serg Internet high five.

@NathanOsman hi five, whiplash sound

3:18 AM
> "You can use both Windows.Networking.Sockets and Winsock to communicate with other devices as a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app developer. This topic provides in-depth guidance on using the Windows.Networking.Sockets namespace to perform networking operations."
So it looks good.
Far better than stupid ChromeOS.

Took photos for what?
@NathanOsman good deal.

3:40 AM

3:53 AM
by the way, i shaved
now i am Freddy Mercury's blond cousin
with manstache

:O
Look blue to me ;)

I need to shave...

damn it.
why does every code beautifier copy as a dash?
@here anyone want a live windows malware sample?

I probably shouldn't post my before and after pic, because I did so on my Chinese chatting app, and my friends said I look like a barbarian lol

4:12 AM
@Serg we like the barbs...(says the Sid Meier's Civilization fan)

well, Ok. I'll post to discord then . . .
unless anyone is against it

it's your face, you can do what you want with it.

Orly ? . . . . pays for plastic surgery to look like Brat Pitt
nobody hires still . . . well dammit !
Aaand posted . . .

that was a waste of money....but it is still your face...

Don't . . .freak out tho

4:19 AM
8% [7 libc6 14.2 kB/2,590 kB 1%]                                  2,990 PB/s 0s
hm...

PB ? O.o

Peta bytes..

I know. Sweet internet gods

@KazWolfe Pffffft. My Android does better than that.

but who has internet like that?
who pays for internet like that?
and why do I even care?

4:22 AM
BECAUSE TSHIRT

^-- good reason to care

Good night...

With that speed now we finally can download more RAM XD
@TheXed sleep well !

hopefully I don't wake up to a chorus of a cat typing me a story on this keyboard...

@Serg with speed that fast you don't need RAM :P

4:24 AM
@Seth your internet download speed doesn't have an effect on the performance of your computer..

wait... this means i can survive any ddos attack!
COME AT ME SCRIPT KIDDIES

I HAVEN'T GONE DOWN IN 15 YEARS

@Seth CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Haven't ever gone down because no server ._.
i used to have one on DO though, but i wasn't using it for anything basically

@KazWolfe that's.. not what I meant >.>
best snowden tweet ever:
You want to know how to stop the next whistleblower? Stop breaking the damn law.
3

4:26 AM

@KazWolfe HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH
I'm adding that to my gif collection.

actual recording of the people who took down that mozilla guy's site

> "...up to 857 PB of storage..."

@NathanOsman So a data hoarder's dream?

4:27 AM
Also:
Jul 2 '16 at 4:46, by Nathan Osman
No way. That thing can read at 161.28 GB/s.
There's that.

@KazWolfe The NSA's dream?

@Seth no, those people who download all the torrents of government leaks and everything.

hey, they do good service.

@NathanOsman old workplace worked with the SGI equivilent of that
was pretty cool

@Seth why thank you

4:30 AM
waiting for someone on craigslist to respond

Kaz's Law of Ask Ubuntu General Room: When looking on the Starboard, @NathanOsman's name will always be present in at least one of the slots.

DUDE.
I'm running glxgears in a VM running in my browser.

I should go to bed. I'm getting loopy again.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am running a browser inside my browser.

insert Xzibit meme here

4:36 AM
This. Is. So. Cool.

wait.

Even if it is Dillo.

misread the browser name . . . thinks he should take the mind out of the gutter at some point

aww...

Dillo doesn't even support JavaScript...
> "The overall speed is equivalent to a Pentium 90."
So there's also that.
I wonder if that thing could compile qemu.
Then you could emulate another platform.

4:43 AM
but i wanted to run a vm inside a vm inside a vm inside a browser inside a vm!

"Yo, I got my ARM VM runnin' in qemu runnin' in my browser."
Slower than watching turtles race or Visual Studio install itself - but still cool.

but much faster than the rate at which php is becoming a good language

@NathanOsman So . . . you've made a kernel module in the past, right ?

ooh! i have!
(it just called panic())

@Serg Yes...
@KazWolfe Har-har-har.
@KazWolfe Would have been easier to just install Nvidia's drivers.
Ba-dum-tshhhh...

4:48 AM
@NathanOsman so . . . stupid question: are there any "software" oriented modules ? or are modules only for hardware . . .things?

There are lots of software modules.
FUSE, for one.

5:05 AM
I was wondering about that and was going to ask a Q on U&L,but figured I'd ask you first
> Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE) is a software interface for Unix-like computer operating systems that lets non-privileged users create their own file systems without editing kernel code.
oh,wow

5:33 AM
So guys. iMessage finally got stickers. You know, the things telegram, Allo, and WhatsApp have had forever now.. and of course they're treating it like some new amazing feature.

there's some huge ants crawling on the outer wall of my house. I am not sure if i should start smacking them or let em be
also, freaking passport application form has a line where it doesn't specify which to put first , first name or last name
I'm about to have huge argument with my mom about that
What's also funny is that when they were applying me to come to the US, the lawyer put my parental name into application, so it is in my current passport now. And now i don't know what to do with it.It's not counted as middle name either, but . . . just pisses me off that my name got messed up like that, so it opens a hole for potential problems

1 hour later…
6:51 AM
@Seth I miss the stickers from Hive since moving my family to Telegram
@terdon done... still feel muddled and troubled about such cases but I guess either some stuff is doomed to be hard or some zannas are doomed to be dense about it :)
answer about another distro but now idk what to do askubuntu.com/review/late-answers/691247 :/

Hi folks!

hi :)

I have a question for moderators related to this answer posted as a comment: OP would like to self-answer but can't due to too many deleted and/or not-upvoted answers. I think moderators can convert comments to answers and vice versa. Is that true?
If not, what can I do in the mean time? My best idea is to post a community wiki answer myself and delete it once OP can post their own.

answers can be converted to comments but not vice versa
and mods cannot lift question/answer bans
(all this AFAIK and I don't know much)

Nope, we can't

a mod can look into their ban though
they will have to improve their existing answers

8:50 AM
She deleted all of them (in hopes to lift the ban).

well she should undelete them
what's with the disparaging comment haha I'm going to flag it
+1 to your CW

Hello, I saw this somwhere in a chat: askubuntu.com/questions/895100/…
It's a question written in spanish, I could translate it... but does that even make sense? I fell sorry for the guy
feel*

@SamuelSantana you can translate it yeah, that will be OK. It might not help them but maybe it will help someone else :S

@Zanna Nice! I didn't know that. I always used the edit option in the drop-down menu to the left of the messages.

btw you can hit the up arrow to edit your previous message(s) in chat (see?) ;)

8:55 AM
oh, that's a nifty feature

ikr :)

well, the question is kind of ambiguous even for a native spanish speaker... anyhow, thanks for the thumbs up! I will translate it and see what happens

@DavidFoerster I still don't know how to make links with different text!!
@SamuelSantana translate, and if it's still unclear, it can be closed as unclear and they can edit it

yeah!

8:58 AM
Good morning ! :)

morning!

@Zanna Good morning Zanna ! :) Everything fine today ? :)

@Zanna with markdown formatting like everywhere else on SE
@cl-netbox: Hiho!

@DavidFoerster Good morning David ! :)

wth
now it works...
o.O
@cl-netbox fine now I can format my links thanks to @DavidFoerster

9:04 AM
@Zanna nice :) what do you mean with format links ?

often overlooked and well hidden
Hi all

hmm I'm sure I remember that it didn't work that way when I used to do it. Seriously I am losing my mind

I always get puzzled when to use () and when to use [] - I usually get it wrong on the first attempt.

@cl-netbox I mean if you type [any text you like](link here) it makes a properly formatted link

@Takkat Good morning Takkat ! :)

9:10 AM
well I have edited like 6000 posts... I know the syntax... I just thought it didn't work in chat for some idiot reason

And I never
**get used** to not be able to format on a two-liner
Hi Netty

I haven't tried it for months
SE is awesome, etc

"etc" is what?

Hey, never mind about the translation, that guy has asked the question in english here ¬¬: askubuntu.com/questions/895261/…

I think someone pranked me about how many backslashes to use
I swear there were backslashes
@Takkat more praising adjectives

9:12 AM
:)

@SamuelSantana ugh what a mess

@Zanna ah that ... I also have to remember and look it up every time when I need to use it in a comment. :)

@Zanna yeah, sorry about the confusion

@SamuelSantana how is it your fault? Thank you very much for your efforts
Is it me or does sleep deprivation make you hungry?

I think its normal

9:22 AM
@SamuelSantana Si tienes muchas ganas, lo puedes traducir. Sino, simplemente votalo como "unclear" y punto.
I usually do precisely what you did: leave a comment explaining that they need to ask in English.

@terdon ok, ¡gracias!

that sounds fancy, do that have beans?
hides

wait til jokerdino gets here @JourneymanGeek

@terdon Every now and then you surprise me once again ... speaking Spanish ... is there something what you are not capable of doing (nearly) perfectly ? :) Good morning terdon ! :)

9:25 AM
@Zanna He speaks the same thing as me

@cl-netbox I spent 7 years living in Spain :)

Just dig Aarthi (ex SE staffer) up, and we'll be confusing you guys in badly transliterated tamil all day.

@JourneymanGeek Πρόσεχε μην αρχίσω τα ελληνικά!

@terdon cool :)

@terdon that's greek and latin to me. more the former.

9:26 AM
Heh :P

@JourneymanGeek that's what I mean ;)

@terdon did you live there as well ? :D

@cl-netbox Oh yes. . .

Today is relatively quiet ;p

@JourneymanGeek BANG !!! :D :D :D Good morning ! :)

9:28 AM
I got bored and decided to throw away my old, mostly dead monitor
its apparently impossible to open up
also bought flour. That kinda boring day

@terdon All I can tell is that you're saying something about the Greek.

@JourneymanGeek what's cooking?

"Careful or I'll start with the Greek"

We're going to try to make home made pasta

Is what I said.

9:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek nice! I'm going to make baked polenta chips
@terdon lol

@JourneymanGeek nice and tasty ! :)

My favourite (nonsensical) Latin phrase is: ignem sub culo tuo facio.

@cl-netbox depends, it can also go terribly wrong :)

It's entirely correct and translatable but it totally uses its figurative meaning in Latin.

show off

9:33 AM
please enlighten the peasants among us

Don't shoot in the back?

"I make fire under your butt."

@JacobVlijm true ... but mostly self-made pasta is better than buying factory-made pasta :) Good morning Jacob ! :)

Ah! ignem must be the same root as ignite, I see.

Hey Netty (borrowed from Takkat)

9:34 AM
@DavidFoerster hahaha ... German slang :D

@cl-netbox Yeah, we created that phrase during my Latin class (at a German school).
Germans translating their idioms literally to other languages seems to be common trope.^^

@DavidFoerster Ich mach Dir Feuer unter'm Arsch (translation for @terdon in case German is one of the few languages he doesn't speak) :D

I get Arsch :P
It's annoying actually, I'm the only one in my family who doesn't speak fluent German. My mother was raised speaking German and my ageing grandmother who's not entirely lucid anymore keeps talking to me in German and I have to remind her to speak Greek.

"Da ist Saft auf der Dose." (lit.: "there's juice on the can.") is what an electrician might say to their colleague to express "there's power on that outlet."

That works in English too, actually. Using juice for power, I mean.

9:42 AM
Personally I like to get into the devil's kitchen. ;)

@Takkat: Yes, but never go "onto the wood way".
@Takkat: And definitely never go "fox-devil's wild" ;-D

@JacobVlijm it's experimental pasta so yeah

LOL

@DavidFoerster hahaha

9:45 AM
Oo

@JacobVlijm That's how it looks when my flat mate cooks rice half of the time.

Well that will stick to the wall

She's an excellent cook otherwise but she often fails at rice.

@DavidFoerster So his dinner parties wil be... quiet :)

She's probably just distracted posting on Reddit or Pinterest and forgets about the rice.^^
@JacobVlijm I don't understand that joke or pun. What's the connection between "rice" and "quiet"?

9:49 AM
I mean, not many people will enjoy eating dinner she cooked (when it is rice)

@JacobVlijm They could still complain loudly about the rice^^

post at the top of unanswered is a rant

...Now the second :)

the third ! :D

Rakesh Bariaat startup the Gnome Display Manager login screen does not appear the screen remains black and only the mouse cursor is visible, nothing else happens . so help me how can i start

10:30 AM
@DavidFoerster she should get a rice cooker
its nearly impossible to mess up with one. Other than my dad's aunt who blew one up by accident

o.O
Iranians taught me to cook rice. Mostly I get it right :)

10:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek I considered one as her birthday present but our kitchen is crowded enough as it is.

11:39 AM

11:59 AM
@Zacharee1 that's more of a husband-cooker than a rice-cooker.

12:47 PM
yum

experimental home made pasta was success

It meets the table cloth design :)

Q: Using date variable with wget --post-data

M. DuinkerkenFor a project I want to use wget in a cron to download a data file. In the wget statement, a start- and enddate have to be defined in the following format: wget --post-data="stns=235&vars=TEMP&start=YYYYMMDDHH&end=YYYYMMDDHH" Since I want it to be done by a cron job, I would like the start- a...

@JourneymanGeek you earn our respect. This is artwork.

@JacobVlijm literally our first attempt at this, and maybe the 3rd or 4th batch of anything made in this

@JourneymanGeek awesome :D

Hey Guys, Anyone who can help me web server very strange access issue, i don't where else to go :-(

Yes, i do have internal DNS server and its works fine
That's why i can access the server with test.example.com from inside

Q: Should we get reputation points for passing review tests?

DorianI'm aware that one can get "punished" for failing several review tests in a row, but where is the reward for passing these tests? Other than the satisfaction of helping the community of course... I also know that badges are awarded for reviewing hundreds of posts. But shouldn't we get a small ...

@AskUbuntuMeta no!

@AskUbuntuMeta with a minus sign with it? sure :D
