Q: How to copy files from multiple directories?

bigTreeI have a bunch of text files in several directories I want to copy into another. What can I do, instead of going inside each directory and cp *.txt in this directory?

The answers for files in multiple directories will be different from the answers for files under one directory. Of course, there are ways to make it work on both but that wasn't done and so now it's two different questions.

12:30 AM
what the...

Nice.
Some people would kill for that upload.

I only pay for 60/10

Some people would like their Ethernet card or Wifi card to work that fast too :)
On that note... HI EVERYONE :)

Wifi never, Ethernet easy...

@Seth I got to use your silentcast yesterday to show how Conky bar graphs the CPU percentage....what a great program you were part of!

12:34 AM
:)

lol even better...

^^^ That was 15 seconds of idle, then 15 seconds of chrome loading with 10 tabs.
If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then @Seth participation in Silentcast project is worth a million words.

Yay, silentcast.

You know it too? I think it's awesome.

kinda sorta.

:) that 140k rep is well-earned.
btw "LICEcap" sounds like something you put on your head when your hair has lice infection....
I think they were doing a play on words with icecap but it sort of backfires in my mind.

@karthick87 here: launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wiki-editors click join the team on the right, since you have a page I bet it won't be hard to get in

@Mateo thank you. I have clicked on Join the team and its waiting on Approval i believe.

Its not really designed for twitch gaming I suspect
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it works really well tho

@JourneymanGeek nah...but it seems to work fine...

Spam fail:
This is one of the weirder emails I've run across:
No attachment, no hidden JavaScript. Just a greeting.
I'm betting the From: email is an attempt to get me to visit the website, but based on the type of user they are targeting, that seems a bit ridiculous.
I'm debating whether I should ask this on Security.SE.

sounds like a good question to me

4:47 AM
@NathanOsman Sounds more or less like plain 'spam' to me
if it's pure plain text then meh, though I tend to run my spam filters to anything SpamAssassin has the score over 3.25 as "capture it as spam"
but meh.

@ThomasWard Mine is set to 5.
I'm not brave enough to set it lower.

@NathanOsman I'd start catching at a tier of 4 TBH
i've only ever had five false positives, because I broke DKIM, and that raised the spam score.
3.5 at the lowest if you do advanced handling

Hey, maybe you know the answer to this: how do I feed data into SpamAssassin? For example, if I constantly get emails that are nearly identical from someone, how can I tell SA to start recognizing it and auto-flagging?

5:04 AM
Downvotes are a natural part of the system, and should be owned by a user. Just because DVs are given out doesn't mean that a user should be able to disassociate themselves from their post.
We've all made bad posts on Meta, it's part of life. We can't just pretend like it never happened, it's not fair IMO

@KazWolfe Users are allowed to request disassociation of posts from their account.
but ultimately you're not wrong.

@ThomasWard "request"

The user seems to hate adversity to their suggestions though.
@KazWolfe IIRC that goes up to staff and CMs, not us...
so...

That doesn't mean they need to be fulfilled. But if we're playing that game, brb requesting disassociations.
@ThomasWard So?

blame Seth for the disassociation thing
not me :P

5:14 AM
That's why I pinged him in the first place.

I disagree with the disassociation but I don't have any say when I'm busy or asleep or both

I still think I have the privilege to challenge mod decisions, right?

is OP still around?

Probably, not on Meta.

@KazWolfe in theory, everyone does - as long as you aren't an arse about it.

5:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek Noted.

Cause as a regular user, I've done that a fair bit on SU
and as a mod, I do that sometimes to CMs on main meta

actually, @ThomasWard, you might be able to answer a technical question while we wait for the SE dumps.
Who "owns" anon posts? There has to be a bound user account iirc because of how the system is designed.
(effectively, what's the UID of anons?)

not necessarily
there's questions with no accounts but a name from migrations.

OwnerUserId would still need a value, no?
I mean, I'd assume it can't be null.

assuming that and name are on the same table?

5:19 AM
probably -1 or some other 'system owned' username in the backend, but we don't know enough about the structure of the system to answer that
that'd be a question for Shog.

and/or main meta

^ that

actually...
meta.askubuntu.com/questions/15858/… has a user id in the db of 6824 (according to SEDE).

Q: What are the different types of users and what can they do?

Jason CI'm generally confused by the terminology when talking about types of user accounts ("registered", "unregistered", etc.), because a) certain things have changed over time and so different posts use different words for different things depending on how old they are, and b) I think others are confu...

JUST got asked

that doesn't cover anonymized users though, I dont think.

Disassociation is his legal right and it stopped the whining.

So I can request a disassoc for any post with negative score on meta? brb doing exactly that.

@KazWolfe you can. And people have done it.
Wont earn you any respect though.

Do it too often and people will be less inclined to accept it

5:24 AM
That seems... wrong.

Of course if you've already trashed that then no reason not to. Case in point.

It destroys the entire point of reputation and downvotes.

@JourneymanGeek they have to, legally.

Its meta tho
@Seth really?

Doubly so on Meta because they have exactly zero actual value in terms of rep or meaning.

5:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek yep. It's part of the content licensing that you can have your posts anonymized at any time. It's what allows the editing model to exist.

That's new

No..
unless you meant new to you?

just my two cents, i really don't think such blatant abuse of the anonymize feature to escape downvotes is right in any way. If users do this, why should they be allowed to participate in our system which depends on the entire voting system being unmanipulated?

yup. Where's this?
Not saying you're wrong, but its something that I'm clearly unaware of

I think this might be worth bringing up on MSE, actually.
This can't be the first case of abuse of this rule.

@gongsun Have you asked a question on the main site?

Sorry i'm not good in englist i'm afraid no one cant understand me

That's why we have editors :)

5:41 AM
@KazWolfe though, why does dissociation on meta matter at all?

@JourneymanGeek I just consider it an unfair abuse of the system in order to evade downvotes which don't even mean anything.

> "which don't even mean anything"
I mean, sure its going to matter if you want to be a mod, maybe.

exactly. so why should people get all upset about them?

Why are you? ;p

Because I have a lot of downvoted-on-meta posts.

5:42 AM
I consider those a badge of honor ;p

And just because they're downvoted doesn't mean I want them deleted or disassociated because that seems an abuse of the system.
I posted something dumb, I got downvotes.

Clearly, this person does not

It seems unfair to me and everyone else who got roasted by meta that someone can just come in and disassociate themselves (with absolutely no penalty) with a post because nobody liked their idea.

Its about the idea, not the person.
The idea is terrible.

@KazWolfe A few imo extremely important things: 1. Downvotes on meta mean people don't agree. This means in no way the post is bad or even that the idea is bad by definition. It can be, but not necessarily.

5:45 AM
Yup!

@JacobVlijm No, I get that. And I accept that. I'm fine with downvotes because people don't agree or an idea was excessively stupid. But I shouldn't be able to say "nope, backsies!" because of that. I'm sort of insulting the community and how all of the SE system (and meta) works by doing that.
Dorian is responsible for his post. He can't just run away from that because the community tore him a new one. I can't punch my boss and ask him to think that someone anonymous punched him.

2. Also, if, looking back, the discussion went into a direction you regret, it can very well be you want to forget about it. In real life, you can say, hey, hanshake, let's move on. On the internet, things are there for ever. I asked for a dissociation in such a case.

hm. I was actually going to link an example, but it looks like someone deleted it. Oops.

@JourneymanGeek we're all 10k here, if it's on AU

5:49 AM
rip.

Of course, if you continuesly post and ask for dissociation, you are doing something wrong, but the option is a useful one imo.

@JacobVlijm and words would be had with that user, no?

Disassociation shouldn't go without consequence when used for things like that, though.
I agree, there are proper uses for dissociations. This was definitely not one of them IMO.

@JourneymanGeek exactly.

As a one off. Sure

5:51 AM
And that's why I'm rather confused with @Seth right now. He did say "we're not babysitters." Why not then just say, "shush, stop complaining. You got downvotes. Be quiet."

^ see my arguments above

@JacobVlijm At the same time, though... Punching my boss and then "k, handshake, let's put this behind us" won't stop me from getting fired.

So?

Its not the same though
More like you had a bad day, and you yelled at your boss.

5:54 AM
And your boss gave you a chance
and your co-worker won't stop saying you yelled at your boss and got off easy.
Sure, you messed up, but your co-worker really ought to let sleeping dogs lie too.

I'm open to a meta discussion. MSE probably suits better.

@JourneymanGeek exactly.

@JourneymanGeek At the same time, you can't just pretend like it didn't happen. It did. You can't just blot out history and hope the problem goes away.

@KazWolfe see now everyone involved went "we're ok" and you're going "But boss. HE PUNCHED YOU"

@KazWolfe but then it is between you and your boss, not a story every passenger has to be aware of.

5:58 AM
The local mods are fine with doing it in this instance, they're clearly feeling its in line with the spirit, and letter of the rules (though yeah - I'll leave it to them if they want to clarify it), and that its hopefully a one off thing.

@JourneymanGeek And I'm sitting here saying "But boss, HE PUNCHED YOU and when I did that, I got fired!"

@JacobVlijm heh. Took the metaphor right out of wherever I pull metaphors from.
@KazWolfe this isn't a punch tho
there's quite literally no aggrieved party
Its closer to yelling "WHY ARE YOU ALL IDIOTS" in the office. and not even flipping a table.

doesn't matter, i'm just personally displeased with how this went because I feel it unfair and an abuse of the SE system, but that's just my opinion.

Which I'm sure has been noted, and if it happens again, you're free to go I told you so.

Will do next time if I notice more abuse.

6:18 AM
hm.... this makes no sense.
i have a usb device plugged in, and it's using a good amount of power, but it doesn't show in lsusb

maybe it needs more power

it's pulling at least 520 mA from my computer.
that should be enough such that the machine is aware of it.
It's a charging pad, so it's not exactly a HID or anything.

er
would a charging pad have enough brains to be detected?
I'd assume its power only, and self contained

right.
but it's still pulling a decent amount of current, so the USB controller should be aware of it, right?

nope
You can draw power without beinf a detected device I think
You can check it with a raspi

6:26 AM
I know you can with low currents, but the second you try higher currents, don't the systems require negotiation with the controller to increase power output?
hang on...
no, not the cable.
strange.
i could have sworn that the system was always supposed to know about usb devices, even those just drawing power.
bah, there goes that idea.
Wait, if the data pins aren't connected, the system can't even do any negotiation. If there's a resistor bridging the data pins, that would allow for high charge currents without detection irrc because there's nothing to detect.
I wonder if there's a product that will act as a USB ammeter and then feed that data back into the computer.

Could I get a bit of advice about whether a question would be "on topic"? I've got a strange bug with "Albert" (quick launcher), under Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS and Xfce (4.12) desktop: if I run it from terminal, it's fine; but if I launch it from menu (or "autostart" on login) I get a system freeze. Could that fly as a question on Main?
I've looked around at "desktop freeze" items, and can't see anything that seems to map on to this kind of behaviour.

hmmm :/ could get closed as a bug report
hopefully the devs will come back to you... you could try if you want, maybe someone knows

@Dɑvïd could get closed as a bug. have you tried changing your launcher/.desktop file to open a terminal on launch so you can get some debug messages? That would be your first step.

@Dɑvïd you should also check if this happens if you run it as a different user. Create a new user, with default settings, and try it there. If the problem doesn't occur, you know it's specific to your setup.
But yes, for reasons that have never been very clear to me personally, if something looks like a bug it is automatically off topic on Ask Ubuntu. That's not the case in any of the other SE sites this would be on topic on though, so you could always try Super User or Unix & Linux instead.
Or you could just switch to another launcher like gnome-do or synapse

@terdon - Pretty sure it happens related to the flood of bug reports we used to get on alpha and beta releases. It was discussed on meta. It is on a stable LTS, so at least I would deem it with much less prejudice and just let it ride. At this point it's not playing with site SNR. It really really used to though.

@RobotHumans I'm pretty sure I've read most of the relevant meta posts and know I've argued against this. Development versions are one thing, but I've never understood why asking for na workaround for bugs is off topic.
shrugs. I don't make the rules, I just enforce them :P

11:59 AM
@terdon When it's not a dev release, and we're not flooded with them - I don't close them. :) Heck sometimes I even fix them

@terdon @RobotHumans Thanks for the suggestions. And actually, if it's on topic at U&L, I'm happy to try there. The problem trying to "debug" (for a non-dev like me) is that beyond launching from terminal (where the problem does NOT occur!), I don't know how to track it. The system really seizes up solid, and immediately. :( Perhaps there are log dumps of some kind? But best to post on U&L -- thanks again for the help!

@Dɑvïd I am guessing the difference will come down to the difference in environment between running GUI and CLI stuff. Do try it with a new user first though, that's the most relevant bit I think.

@terdon Will do - thanks again!

@terdon - good call. Just spitballing here, but it could even be the app relying on some environment variable that is in .bashrc, so launched from the GUI it could stall looking for the variable/block trying to open a file.

Yeah, something like that.

@terdon question!
does every line in /etc/password require a "home"?
0
A: Why do syslog and uml-net have /home in /etc/passwd?

RinzwindSlight guess: Inherited from old times and to not break stuff. I assume every line in /etc/passwd needs a home (needs confirmation). And /etc/passwd is something we take as is as part of the Linux system (and not a Debian/Ubuntu specific feature). In the old days syslog-ng was pretty common and ...

related :D

@Rinzwind Dunno.
OK, just learned. @Rinzwind yes it does. See man 5 passwd:
/etc/passwd contains one line for each user account, with seven fields delimited by colons (“:”). These fields are:

       · login name

       · optional encrypted password

       · numerical user ID

       · numerical group ID

       · user name or comment field

       · user home directory

       · optional user command interpreter
Since it explicitly mentions that password and shell are optional, the rest are presumably required.

that does not make it mandatry :P

g.rocketAs far as I can tell, both universes have equally objective ideas of speed. Do we know how fast the two ships can go? Which is faster?

Somebody needs to give that the correct answer. The Enterprise is faster, but the Falcon can go further in less time.

A quick question, if someone has a better idea.. I wanted to access (ssh into) my colleagues machine (ubuntu) over internet for troubleshooting an issue.. He is connected to a broadband connection and i am connected to a broadband connection.. Is there a possibility here to ssh into his machine?

yeah
you'll need to arrange port forwarding on his router if he's using NAT and allow yourself through any firewalls.
Then use his public IP

Either that or STUN... which is super complicated.

6:00 PM
@Seth thank you.. He is not sure whether he is using NAT.. But he is able to login into his router settings accessing 192.168.1.1
Do you have any idea where we need to check that?

@karthick87 I have an alternative solution for you : install teamviewer on both machines -> teamviewer.com/en/download/linux That's the most easy way to access his machine. :)

we have tried that.. Due to some reason teamviewer keeps crashing in his machine :-|
