5:00 AM
Hmmm, yeah, same thing.
Lemme fire up my debugger.
@Seth Does Chrome work correctly?
Interesting.
Navigation is blocked: intent:#Intent;action=com.google.android.apps.authenticator.AUTHENTICATE;S.request=[...]
I'm seeing that in the browser console.
Sidenote: as a temporary workaround, you can manually load https://github.com/sessions/two-factor/security-key after getting bumped back to the login page.

5:15 AM
@NathanOsman well I'm logged in from a previous session, so I'd guess so.

Still debugging the JavaScript.
My hunch is that this is actually a problem with GitHub.
But I'm not sure yet. Still debugging.

@NathanOsman there's a browser console?!

With remote debugging, yes.
You have to connect your phone to a PC with Chrome.

@NathanOsman figured that might be the case.
Ohh

@Serg I knew it! Yeah, I think we both need the competition a bit to get sharp :) @WinEunuuchs2Unix Thanks a lot! Fun it is indeed :)

5:18 AM
@Seth ---^
After a POST of the login form, you get a 302 redirection to https://github.com/sessions/two-factor/security-key, which, for some inexplicable reason, results in another redirect back to the login form.
I'm trying to figure out where the second redirect is coming from...

That explains it though.
Hm, still happens if I turn the brave shield off.
@NathanOsman can confirm it works in chrome though, just logged out and back in.

So the question becomes... what is GitHub expecting from Brave that it isn't getting?

Dunno. Maybe time to ping Sampson?

Yeah, probably.
I don't really have the time to pick apart minified scripts and trace any further.

@BraveSampson can't login to github on brave for Android w/ TFA enabled. It flashes the TFA pages and then dumps me back at the login screen

5:25 AM
I'll add what I found.

@NathanOsman yeah no problem. Just needed someone to confirm it was broken :) thanks!
I still think it's a pity I never got to meet him before he moved to Florida. He was only like a 40 minute ride away.

Yeah :(
And I wasn't too far away either.
But. There are a few conferences in Seattle so - one never knows.
Out of curiosity, I looked into Amtrak's prices for tickets down there.
They are actually quite reasonable.

5:41 AM
Yeah, Amtrak's not bad at all. I took it down to Oregon last year. $37 USD if you book enough in advance.
@NathanOsman LFNW is in may!
I've got plans to go, assuming I'm well (I better be..)

5:52 AM
$107 CAD rount-trip.
But I wonder if it makes a difference how far in advance I book.
$83.57 to go in May, that's with the value option for Cascades.
Wait! It's in Bellingham.
Well.
That's $31 CAD. Round trip. Excellent.

6:15 AM
:D
Hopefully I'll see you there!
Now to bed. Goodnight.

Not A Number?

Is that an Answer?

No. But I wonder whether it's rude.
Google Translate can't make any sense of it.

I don't know spanish

but it suggests "maybe you meant 'hijo puta'" at some part, which means son of a b1+ch

Hi @all!
Do you agree with my comment on askubuntu.com/a/884004/175814 or did I miss something?

#htc to release just 6 to 7 smartphones this year https://goo.gl/QebMBs https://t.co/1DtE6grCzR
"just"

@DavidFoerster I voted to delete the post because it's a rant and barely makes sense. But I agree with them that secure boot is FUD
I don't really agree with your comment though since they don't mention any drawbacks

@Zanna Secure Boot has valid use cases but many chipset manufacturers implement it in a way that makes it hard to use it with anything but Windows or disable it at all.

they are just saying (unclearly) that it has no benefits (M$ just want us to THINK there are benefits)
"there aren't any" is a valid answer to "what are the benefits of foo?"
@DavidFoerster yeah and I do think the intention of secure boot is to make it harder to escape from Windows

1:52 PM
@Zanna I wouldn't go as far as to say that Microsoft uses it to sabotage Linux intentionally, but they certainly don't care if it does and designed their certification requirements for UEFI and Secure Boot to only regard interoperability with Windows.

yeah...

The specs provide methods that allow the relatively simple installation of other operating systems but they're optional.
… so every el cheapo mainboard manufacturer is going to ditch them.

yup, I can't get anywhere with it switched on

I don't understand why there's no common base for UEFI firmware that mainboard manufacturers can buy/license instead of everyone fumbling together their own stuff.
I only know of Intel to make a serious effort to provide a good and complete UEFI implementation.
… and they're probably not licensing it to other manufacturers because they see it as a marketable advantage.
That's the only reason why I'd consider buying an Intel mainboard btw.
… even though they're overpriced and lack features and have undocumented remote management interfaces.

speaking of Intel, I am spending hours researching a (wrongly, imho) closed question... I need to track down one patch to see whether I'm just lucky or the Bay Trail c-state bug is actually fixed in 4.9

1:59 PM
I don't know anything about that.

I know far more about it than I actually care to at this point haha

2:47 PM
this one looks ok to me - doesn't it make sense? askubuntu.com/review/low-quality-posts/678997

@Zanna Yes, it's fine. It's the OP's own answer to boot.

looks fine.
probably it got enqueued automatically for being so short?

@terdon yeah exactly, I thought maybe someone flagged it because = should work the same as == in that context, and I don't know enough to know that. I am inclined to trust OP, but I have seen enough senseless self-answers to have a doubt...
@ByteCommander that doesn't happen I think? Anyway it's not that short

I'm not sure, but I believe there were some conditions on which a post automatically enters the LQ review queue...

cross-posted question with useless answer askubuntu.com/questions/883885/…

Q: Attempting to use or disable window spread causes instant logout

gracious1Lately, whenever I try to use window spreading, Ubuntu actually logs me out, and I end up at the login screen. I log in again, and everything seems normal, startup applications run, etc., but then if I try to spread windows again, the same thing happens. I had used unity-tweak-tool to set hot c...

@Serg extremely interesting question. Unfortunately you are not allowed to answer. Only me :)

Unity may be the bane of my existence.

Q: Adding interactive application to Ubuntu panel?

DjokjulaI want to change the clock on the Ubuntu panel into something more exotic. I am interested in finding a way to add an icon to the panel and be able to change it (like Psensor and Slack applications do, see picture) based on time or some other conditions. My current Ubuntu panel How i want it to...

When I try to spread windows or disable window spreading, I am logged right out! Poof!
Very annoying, esepcially when my pointer ends up accidentally in the hot corner, which I cannot disable either without being logged out! :(
BTW, hello @JacobVlijm, nice to see you again.

Hey @gracious1 great to see you!

5:52 PM
Did you see my puzzling question to-day?

@gracious1 yes, I looked. So far nothing pops up in my mind :(

It is very bizarre.

I would not be good for the Unity answer as I have not used Unity since shortly after it came out. Found Xfce and have never looked back.

Searching 'xfce' now.........

@gracious1 did you see Seth's comment?

5:54 PM
@JacobVlijm Checking.....

@JacobVlijm I am looking forward to your answer for the Ubuntu Panel question. =)

What does "intempestive" mean? Does that mean a dialog or some intervening things appears before being logged out?

@Terrance oh. that is so much fun. Unfortunately I need to teach in a minute...

@JacobVlijm Good luck teaching! I will be watching for your answer on that one. =)

5:56 PM
Wow. So this is a bug that nobody has fixed. :(
But even trying to disable window spreading logs me out :(
What is weird is that this was a reported in 2015?? But window spreading had worked for me until a few days ago.
Oh goody, I can try completely reinstalling xorg-server.

@JacobVlijm Oh, don't worry about that - I won't answer that question. Too busy with other things

6:26 PM
OMG. I just solved my own problem. Can I answer my own question?

@gracious1 You sure can.

ok. I'll give it a go.

Can't upvote yourself, but you can accept your own answer after a certain period of time.

2 days after the question was posted.

@Seth yeah that part isn't hard and once you have that on GMail you can add the 'Send As' alias in ThunderBird that works properly. Because Google is weird :p

6:48 PM
How do you format things like 'Shift' and 'Alt' to look like keys?

in posts: <kbd>FOO</kbd>

@ThomasWard Thanks!

top is code/raw, bottom is how it's rendered

@ThomasWard yes you can

@Rinzwind prove or be slapped.

6:53 PM
@ThomasWard Is there a different code for making text look like a button?
Or is that just wishful thinking?

@gracious1 as in a keyboard button? Other than that, not really, sorry.

No I mean as a web button, like a back button

ah, then no.

Or a "Submit" button

@gracious1 why would you need that here though

6:56 PM
Okay, thanks for the other thing, though. Very useful.
@ThomasWard Because I mention a back button in an answer I am composing.

MOO

Gratz to Lithuania! It became 99 today

@jokerdino And possibly in violation of the Endangered Species Act!

@Rinzwind wat

Happy birthday Lithuania.

I did not realize that Lithuania is younger than the USA.

7:03 PM
Germany is younger than USA.

@jokerdino I thought Germany was older but not by much?

Yes, even though all the little states have been around since antiquity.

Unless you mean modern post-Soviet-Era Germany, after the fall of USSR (when East and West germany reunited)

The current Netherlands got formed in 1833 (after Napoleon got defeated)

All the little German states have been around since antiquity, but there was no unified Germany until 1800-something.

7:05 PM
Germany as a nation only happened in the late 19th century.

German principalities fighting amongst each other.

German Empire (1849) is the earliest I can see

Before that, it was the Holy Roman empire, then were broken into confederates by Napolean, and Mr Ironman united it under Prussia blah blah

Well, then there is the Holy Roman Empire.
Which was neither holy, nor Roman, nor a empire.

1384 Burgundian Netherlands <3

7:06 PM
<3

@jokerdino so then you're right, I'm wrong, but my head hurts 'cause i'm not in a history mood so blah

oh we go back to the year 1000 even :D

you owe me coffee now

I don't believe that HRE is considered "Germany" although I guess that is what Hitler considered the "First Reich"?

and a lot of it

7:07 PM
pours a barrel of coffee.

not enough
an oil-tanker's worth of coffee would work though

Well, do Germans think of HRE as "Germany"? We are not taught that over here.

I don't think so.

ask a german :-)
but I doubt it

It's only Germany after it was united by Bismarck.

7:08 PM
@jokerdino That is what I was taught.
But Hitler considered HRE the First Reich.

yes, that's why I say it is younger than US.

@jokerdino I assume you mean the person Bismarck, not the Nazi-era mega-battleship Bismarck :P

That's why his Nazi Germany was the Third Reich.

(my brain isn't functioning without coffee)

@ThomasWard Yes he means the person! LOL

7:09 PM
@jokerdino if we want to be hyper specific though
@jokerdino "Germany" as a united nation disappeared post-WWII
East and West germany were the two it became

well, Hitler needs some history yeah.

after the fall of the USSR Germany was once again reunited
so in reality the latest recognition of a united "Germany" nation is after the fall of the USSR.

Also, I remember that Berlin apparently was in the middle of East Germany or something..

Well, I think West Germans considered themselves the true Germany since East Germany was just the Russian quarter; the French, British, and Americans had released theirs from occupation.

and that would be 1988

7:11 PM
@gracious1 the point remains though that a singular "Germany" in the world's eye didn't reappear until after the berlin wall was taken down, right near the end of the USSR, technically in 1988, or more specifically 1990 when "reunification" happened.

Yes, part of Berlin was in the part that Russia had occupied right after WWII.

"age of Germany" therefore is "Which perspective?:

@ThomasWard It is very odd to me to think of these European nations as younger than the USA.

and worlds-eye-view History would suggest the latest reformation of the 'Germany" nation to be the 'latest' age/timeline of "Germany" itself

Their history is so much older than ours.
Of course we managed to wipe out the Natives, and so wipe out their history. :(

7:13 PM
now, if we instead say "History of the Germanic Peoples" then we go back to ancient times.

Maybe it was when the nation became republic.

So is the the Fourth Reich?
And France has had how many Republics now?

careful with that word, since Nazi-era Germany, "Reich" is pretty closely associated with dark evils
some out here get real upset when the word is said outside a WWII-era history course.
just saying.
god I seriously need coffee... when can I go off-shift blurgh

Actually, the USA is really in its Second Republic, too, but nobody calls it that. First there were the Articles of Confederation. Then there was the Constitution, which completely changed the government.
Okay, I'll delete my Reich comment.

7:15 PM
@gracious1 I don't think anyone in the USA really considers it a "United States of America" until the constitution, since the articles of confederation were more or less a loose alliance of states but not a united Nation.

What is kinda weird is that France's longest land boundary is with Brazil o.O
Ah, the French Guiana. mb

Well, it was called the "United States of America" under the Articles of Confederation, too.
Even though it was a very loose confederation.

and I'm not sure we call it the USA due to recent things, but I'll save my political rants for Tumblr where nobody can do squat about them.

@ThomasWard I'm with you. The USA is turning into a nation that I do not recognize.
But I'll stop now, too.
So French Guiana is a full department, now. That's like Hawaii being a state of the Union. It's all odd.
And Greenland is bigger than Denmark.

Too yuuge
@gracious1 Greenland does not come under EU, does it?

7:19 PM
How did this start? Oh yeah, happy birthday to Lithuania!

lol
@jokerdino nope

But Denmark is in EU ._.

@jokerdino It's under the Danish Realm, but not part of the EU. I don't really know how all of that works. I'm still trying figure out how the UK is one nation yet four nations.

OOPS
@jokerdino "Greenland, an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark is one of the EU's overseas countries and territories (OCT). "

Oh, it is part of the EU. okay.

7:21 PM
"Greenland chose to leave the EU predecessor without also seceding from a member state. "

Well, that's by virtue of being under the Danish Realm then.
You are confusing me.

yes or no Greenland?!

No it seems
"Between 1973 and 1985, Greenland was part of the EU. Following a referendum held in 1982, it withdrew from the EU and is now associated to the EU under the Overseas Association Decision."

Algeria left EU because it became independent from France. But Greenland left EU but still part of Denmark?

@jokerdino Correct

7:23 PM
phew

It is autonomous country under the Danish Realm.

So maybe Scotland can join EU but still be part of UK?

I know that some Scots think so.m

They just need to be autonomous.

Why does Apple send out emails for WWDC so early? It isn't until June 5...

7:25 PM
@jokerdino Are you Scottish?

No, I don't drink.

Brexit looks like a big mess. And wow, I just learned a new word: Euroskepticism (or Euroscepticism)

I don't think even the #Brexit camp expected it to happen lol

If I lived in Scotland, I would vote to break away from the UK, and join EU.
The only reason Scotland and England were ever united is because Old Queen Bess didn't have any kids!

Well, it won't be United anymore if they broke away.

7:30 PM
Who here is from Lithuania?

No one that I know of.

@jokerdino Well, there's still Wales and Northern Ireland.

poor them
@gracious1 me too

Look at the last comment here: askubuntu.com/a/883705/72216 How do I convince someone posting the 1000.001 dupe isn't that useful :(

@JacobVlijm Because a later dupe by them got a mod attention comment.
You a normal user can't convince someone. When a moderator says "Hey, please don't do something" it usually makes people listen.
and if it doesn't, we've got the ability to tell them to listen if absolutely necessary.

OK, I just realized I made a stupid comment to someone's answer when something didn't work. I thought I had installed a certain program but I hadn't. So I went to delete the comment, but the person has already replied to my comment with "@gracious1 you need to install the program". I went ahead and deleted my comment; how can I get this person to delete his comment so my name isn't showing up there looking stupid for all the universe to see?

flag it as obsolete @gracious1

ok
That's not considered malicious?

malicious? why?
nothing bad will happen to them

ok
Oh, I only have 10 flags, like a cat with nine lives. :/

well, the more you use (correctly) the more you will get :)

8:39 PM
@gracious1 Your flags reset everyday. :)

I get 100 flags a day and I never manage to use 10

^ same here

@Terrance Oh wow, if only cats' lives did that.

@gracious1 I hear ya! Wouldn't that be nice? =)

@Zanna I guess that's a privilege I can look forward to.

8:42 PM
I only have 32 flags a day right now. Most of it has to do with how much Rep (points) you have.

no it's about flags
the more helpful flags you use, the more you get

Ah, silly me!

I had 100 flags long before I got 10k, iirc
I think there is a meta post explaining it in more detail..,

Maybe I only use mine for evil and now I am at 32 remaining a day. >:)

It's both valid flags and rep.

8:44 PM
I remember using flags other than for spam, about 2 times total.

A: What happens when all ten moderator flags get used up?

OliFlags aren't refilled but you can earn more, as pointed out by this answer. default 10 per day one bonus flag per 2000 reputation (capped at 100k rep) one bonus flag per 20 "flag weight" above the default (capped at 500 flag weight) maximum 100 Flag weight is something you earn ...

> How many flags do I have?

When you start out, you are allotted 10 flags per day. This number may increase to up to 100 flags per day:

You get one bonus flag per 2000 reputation.
You are awarded additional bonus flags when you flag correctly - one bonus flag for every ten net helpful flags (helpful flags minus declined flags).

@ByteCommander yeah but I think the flags make a bigger difference, it's easier to flag than get 2000 rep!

ah thanks :)

8:45 PM
=)

9:07 PM
@Zanna I think that flag weight is a thing of the past though.

@terdon when I looked this up before, I noticed that it wasn't possible to check my flag weight using the link (or modfied version of it), so I thought this may have become a secret thing that only mods can see

I think it was removed altogether. I seem to remember something along those lines. I've never seen it since becoming a mod anyway.
The system might still use it internally since you can still get flag banned, but that's automatic; the mods have nothing to do with it.
Yep

A: We don't need (to see) flag weight!
