10:05 PM
>:D

/o\

@terdon they use a different system for the flag bans nowadays. There was a period of time between flag weight and the current system where you couldn't get banned at all. (cc @Zanna)

aaah interesting stuff

@Zanna unfortunately the SE system is REALLY complex. Which is why we have such amazing quality (usually.. more editing people!) but it also means it's really confusing at times.
And scary to new people.

10:16 PM
yeah agree on all counts... SE is super awesome & scary & we need more editing

@Seth I haven't asked the question anymore since she mailed me she would skip anaconda anyway and jump to plain python.

@KazWolfe interesting font, but the kerning is bad

...which is the right thing to do i think :)

@JacobVlijm alright! tbh I have no idea what anaconda is and I know very little about matlab. I was just idly curious about the answer to your question since it sounded interesting :)
thanks for letting me know.

My brother finally finished Portal 2.

10:25 PM
when an Ubuntu version is released, might it go from one major kernel release to the next, or will it stay? I thought all versions are frozen on release and just get little updates... so if we have 4.8 in 16.10 now, it will be 4.8 forever, and only the minor numbers will change 4.8.0-32, 4.8.0-37 etc

@Seth Ah, thanks. That rings a bell actually. I do remember being told users can't be flag banned at some point.

@ByteCommander it pisses everyone off, which is perfect :D
@NathanOsman now he can play portal 3! oh.... wait..

Ba-dum-tshhhh...

hmm maybe I need to Ask A Question

Make it B Question
So let's jump to B or not to B
^ ok, faint

10:39 PM
super amazing
although he said "centripetal force" -.-

WOW!

@Seth what's wrong with that?
(haven't watched it, no audio drivers)

...going to zleep, see you later.

@Seth That is absolutely amazing.

@NathanOsman IKR!? :D

10:54 PM
I should get one of those :P
But don't expect me to use my own blood to test it :D

@Zanna I was always taught it wasn't a real thing, but upon googling it some more it appears others may disagree.
@NathanOsman I want to! :D

I have trypanophobia.
BUT. Pond water would be cool.

@Seth it is a thing (or at least a valid description), but centrifugal force is not, imh-physics-teacher-o

@NathanOsman Ah. I understand. A little anyway. I have to lay down for a blood draw and I can't see it or I get super faint. I've never actually fainted, but I've lost all my vision and hearing several times.

I nearly passed out the first time I got a blood sample taken.

11:07 PM
@Zanna did I swap the two in my head? I feel stupid -.-

Things in the room were becoming grey and I lost feeling in my arms :P

@KazWolfe lol
@Seth hmmm only really bad teachers make people feel stupid -.-

@NathanOsman I have a glucometer though and I have no problems with that.

Is that where you get a finger prick?

11:09 PM
yeah

super evil when the people feeling stupid are actually super awesome

Ah, those aren't quite as bad, I suppose.
I got one of those too once.

@Zanna Oh I had good teachers, but my brain does this thing where it flips two things all the time. I'll flip letters, numbers, even things like this :/
It's terrible on tests.

Oh... I'm one of those guys that watch the needle when getting a shot, etc.

@KazWolfe Plz.

11:11 PM
@Seth I'm talking about myself, making you feel stupid when you are actually super awesome and I'm probably wrong anyway

@Zanna oh, no you're right. I just double checked :)

@NathanOsman I have yet to even feel squeamish around blood/things

@Seth :)

@Seth sounds like dyslexia

@KazWolfe no need to say triggery things to everyone else though ;)

11:14 PM
@KazWolfe lucky :P

@Zanna Windows ME.

@JourneymanGeek yeah. it's the only problem I have wrt reading though so I don't typically say I'm dyslexic.
(I was doing college level reading at 11 or 12)

@Seth actually that's common. Dyslexics are usually very smart

@KazWolfe shudder

@JourneymanGeek Oh I have no doubt. But every time I look into dyslexia it seems most symptoms are much more severe than mine.

11:16 PM
It's a spectrum.

heh. So my college did lockdown drills today and apparently like an hour after the 3rd one a teacher found his/her office robbed.

@Seth 10/10
@JourneymanGeek everything is a spectrum nowadays.

o.O

@KazWolfe no one needed to leave anything for the drills though, so probably a coincidence.

Even my keyboard is a spectrum.

11:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek Fair enough.

I object to the "dys" in "dyslexia"

I didn't want to marginalize other people with more serious problems. Kinda like how I don't even joke about OCD anymore after reading the more serious symptoms of it.

@Zanna why..?

it's only "dys" because of our culture

11:21 PM
@KazWolfe those G keys on the end would throw me off every time.

@Seth I still get thrown off by the ESC every now and then, but i'm getting better.

if we had a different kind of society and education system, it would be the folks with the non-dyslexic type of brain who would be "dys"

@Zanna Actually, the "dys" comes from New Latin, which in term is derived from Ancient Greek.

I think that's silly. Something isn't working correctly (brain? eyes? I don't actually know). That doesn't reflect on the person, but something is not functioning properly with their body.
And I say this as a person with many problems of his own.
@KazWolfe Oh that's interesting. Source?

which, in turn, came from proto-indo-european
Noun: dyslexia (countable and uncountable, plural dyslexias)
  1. (neurology, pathology) A mental disability which causes a person to have difficulty in reading and writing.

11:23 PM
I mean, I don't think it should be considered a problem in the person
it's a problem in context

right, but it still is a problem/problematic.

for sure
I don't mean to dismiss people's problems
I teach dyslexic people

and it still makes reading/writing difficult in a sense, so... (of course, different amounts for different people. for me, it's very mild but for others, it's a lot more severe.)

4 times a week at the moment
and I think, that "dys" is saying "there's something wrong with you" and it's a kind of exclusion and denial of responsibility even

the heck? Their (my/our/whatever) body isn't functioning properly. By trying to paint that as normal you marginalize the chance of fixing it. Seriously?
It doesn't mean anything about the person as a person, but if you deny it isn't working properly you doom him/her to struggle their entire life.

11:27 PM
(that, and dys is literally a linguistic convention for thousands of years)

@KazWolfe I know about the etymology

There's nothing wrong with part of you not functioning correctly. In this day and age it's abnormal to have a perfectly functioning body. I know I've never met anyone with that.

hmmm I must be saying it wrong I guess

what seth said. abnormality now is being normal.

I'm trying to express the social model of disability
I don't want anyone to struggle
I just want people to not be excluded and everyone to take responsibility for helping others

11:30 PM
okay, i'm gonna do something really weird for me and challenge that.
if nobody struggles or has problems at all, there are a lot of social downs

eh you are changing the subject going that way I think
I am just trying to reply to what Seth said about dooming people to struggle by normalising their disability

@Zanna that has nothing to do with "dys"?

still, as an artistically challenged person... if I didn't struggle with art (or, more accurately if nobody struggled with art), professional artists doing commissions to feed themselves would be impossible.

@Zanna hi long time no direct chat :)... hi Seth, Kaz & Co :)

everyone could, therefore no demand for that skill would exist.

11:33 PM
@KazWolfe you're not wrong, but I think that's a (at least slightly) different subject.

this^

But a flower and leaf can be a work of art.

@Seth it is a different subject but still under the same "lack of struggling" category. yeah, i agree, it's not a mental disability but still...

You don't have to grow them, just see them and arrange them.

I have no disagreement with what you just said, but it's derailing...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix hiya :)

11:34 PM
How's the database culling coming along? (not right word though)

if you really want to be annoyed with me, zanna, we can go down that path.

nooooooooo wait....
.... I don't have any popcorn ready~!
*** attempts light humour to ease tensions ***

@Seth hmmm I think I am going to say that you are right and I should think more about it and understand better

@Zanna I guess what I hear you saying is that by categorizing people with disability as not functioning properly (bodily wise) it's a slur on their person. But that's both silly and wrong. IMO. I know a lot of people with disabilities and I don't know a single one that would say their body is functioning properly or who wouldn't give all they had for one that was.

@KazWolfe I'm not annoyed at all :)

11:37 PM
Of course there will be people that will use it as a slur on their person, but those are the people that use anything different from them as a slur and is a red herring.
And I apologize in advance if I come across upset or angered. I'm not. it's just something I care deeply about and I'm not good at conveying thoughts :)

okay, i'm about to do something really evil that will make everyone mad at me. i'm going to generalize people.
so... trigger warning?

@Seth I agree with you about this completely, and actually it's just my experience of dyslexics in particular, who all have crazy awesome skills in areas I am totally crap at. I think you get one end of the stick or the other, or something in the middle, and there's something wrong with all of us, and it's just the way we do our stuff that makes only people at one end of the spectrum suffer

The problem I have with this entire "politically correct" culture is that it is dismissive of problems. Just calling it by a "correct" and "non-offensive" name does absolutely nothing to fix it. You can call someone "mobility-challenged" or "crippled" -- it changes nothing about their situation. Most people who subscribe to the PC culture do it just to make themselves happy that they're "helping" even though names change absolutely nothing.

hey I just don't want to upset or anger you, if you come across that way, it should totally be me apologising for causing it, not the other way around

If you want to actually help, go help. Not dismiss it with a fancy "non-offensive" name. A rose by any other name.
</rant>
(no offense meant to anyone directly, just the culture in general)

11:43 PM
Unlike many mammals where everyone is the same the beauty of humanity is everyone is different not only in looks but also skills, experiences, intellectual areas, hobbies, tastes, preferences, habits, philosophies, careers, religions and art. A classically disabled person although physically limited in some motor skills perhaps, will be think more of himself or herself by the traits mentioned as we also tend to judge ourselves too.

backs out of the room

@Zanna don't be silly. if you opinions offend or anger me that is more my problem than yours :)

@Zacharee1 o/ :)

notes one has a mod magic wand and th other doesn't

I've been spotted!

11:45 PM
hehe JUST KIDDING :)

of course there are obvious exceptions to that but I'm going to assume we're all reasonable and not mention them. okay, I'm done :)

hmm I want to fix my opinions if they are harmful

@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's a special wand though. if I misuse it it will disown me.

Ohhh... is that a harry potter reference?

I think it's just mod awesomeness

11:46 PM
@Zanna anyone that disagrees with you will tell you your opinions are harmful, so that's not as easy as you might think :/
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nope. never read those books. just playing along with your wand joke.

@Seth that's quite a harmful opinion

@Seth Kind of silly to admit but I read most of them.

(PARADOX)

I usually decide who to listen to quite carefully

tsk

11:48 PM
oh no... thomas is here.
Begin containment procedures.

@KazWolfe and of course the room got quite dark when I spawned.
it takes about three hours for the shadowy mists to disperse

FTR @Seth used his mod powers to unban Zanna from queue review brought on by computer software. He also undeleted & mergedd a Q&A for me. His magic wand has only been used for good deeds!

@ThomasWard Please return to containment, SCP-4631

SCP CONTAINMENT BREACH

throws forever loop of noop's into hole

11:50 PM
@KazWolfe OVERLORD CONTROL MATRIX 101 ALPHA ENGAGED, REMOVING CONTAINMENT CONTROLS. QUANTUM COMPUTER SYSTEMS RECEIVING OMEGA-CLASS RESPONSES FROM DEPLOYED WORM, CONFIRMED CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS NOW OFFLINE, INITIATING AUTOMATED DISPERSION OF DARKNESS TO ALL LOCATIONS. DARKNESS HAS NOW BEEN TRANSMITTED THROUGH MATTER-ENERGY TRANSPORTATION INTO ORBITAL PLATFORMS, PREPARING FOR GLOBAL DISSEMINATION.

I need to remake that with the first words lasting longer. you can barely read them.

@ThomasWard how can a quantum computer confirm something? Aren't quantum particles always in a state of uncertainty until observed?

@Zacharee1 The algorithms they sent through can return data.

Schrödinger's moderator?

Start Procedure 4631-Gamma immediately. Containment may not be breached.

11:51 PM
@Zacharee1 Schrödinger particles?

SCP Containment maybe not Breach
@Seth they're both alive, dead and neither

@Zacharee1 Haha wait a second... You are telling me Quantum Particles are bratty kids misbehaving until you look at them and then they are stable? :p

Lock down Sector ██ NOW

@WinEunuuchs2Unix basically
@KazWolfe sector "Two Gray Squares"

@Seth changing my mind is usually not easy at all :/ but some folks inspire me to try :)

11:53 PM
@Zacharee1 Qauntum Mechanics are on drugs then... .that's like saying there were WMD's in Iraq but because we looked for them then they didn't exist.

Containment state: RESTORED

Quantum mechanics are special
@KazWolfe rip

DISPERSION ACTIVATED. DARKNESS NOW ENCOMPASSES TWENTY-THREE PERCENT OF PLANET, CONTAINMENT NOW BROKEN.

Simulators online.

DARKNESS NOW ENCOMPASSES FORTY-TWO PERCENT OF PLANET

11:54 PM
I feel like I'm in a surreal sci-fi video game ^^^^

All SCP staff assigned to SCP-4631, report to Agent ██████████ immediately.

guys guys guys
I have a simple solution

argh 6 minutes to use up close votes!

lol

DARKNESS NOW ENCOMPASSES SEVENTY-SEVEN PERCENT OF PLANET, INFILTRATION INTO EXISTING MILITARY INFRASTRUCTURE CONFIRMED SUCCESSFUL, PREPARING AUTOMATED DEFENSES

11:55 PM
sudo killall @ThomasWard-AI_1-test3

SCP-4631's records updated. Object class: EUCLID

@ThomasWard you have a bad naming scheme for your projects

sudo: Access denied

you know you've all thought it xD

11:55 PM
@Seth hue
@Seth want some beer?

DARKNESS NOW ENCOMPASSES NINETY-NINE PERCENT OF PLANET, FULL MILITARY INTEGRATION INTO DEFENSE NETWORK CONFIRMED, PREPARING ARMAGEDDON PROCEDURES

@ThomasWard ERROR: access can neither be granted nor denied in quantum mechanics

Good job, boys. SCP-4631 (Thomas ████) has been successfully contained.
He's back down to Euclid for now, so we can hold off until the next incident.

so we've just created a new universe

[KERNEL PANIC] Overlord system has died, Universal selfdestruct confirmed, but tried to kill init, resetting parameters to the beginning of all things
Whelp, there we go.
anyways

11:58 PM
What did I tell you, @Zacharee1? Installing the "███████████████" █████████ would stop him every time.

I just see gray squares

He thinks he's ███████ containment, but an XK-class event is averted. Works almost every time. :D

@Zacharee1 I'm good

do you get the reference

Is Linux Mint 18 Cimmaron still off -topic?
