inless youre on a SSD then -n 3 might suffice

yep, or just dd /dev/zero into the file
I once watched Def Con talk about security fails. Some idiot tried to hide a file and overwrote it somehow with "F**k you" over and over, or something similar

yeah saw that talk too, but in fact even with shred you can see that there was a file, but you could not make out what was in it

Mhm

only way around this being directly visible is to shred the whole remaining free space
so you have a constant magnetism pattern in case of an HDD
SSD its enough to overwrite it, the nand gates will be at some point in some random states anyways
well, i have to get my ass out of the seat and attend to my household duties
ttyl

9:21 AM
See ya

hmm
S.M.A.R.T. Test says my ssd is all right
I have SSD иец
btw
and have it under Windows is painful too, coz it's just doesn't fit there

9:39 AM
@Videonauth NO NO NO NO NO! >.<
No shred on SSDs!
And one or two passes of overwriting on a modern HDD are more than enough.

lol
SSDs should have a secure delete option
though in theory some drives have internal encryption so changing the key should be entirely in theory, enough

Overwriting a file over and over again on an SSD just wears your cells, but does not guarantee you're overwriting the cells you actually want to erase at all.
SSDs can only be erased completely (full-disk) at once by the disk controller.

yup
tbh, with the extra speed, and if it matters, FDE is not as painful as it could be

Can anybody recommend a dual-band, half-height mini-pci WIFI board that is both fast and isn't prone to the coughing fits that Intel's iwlwifi driver seems to be? I've got a broadcom one that won't go any faster than ~72mbps a pile of Intel ones that are all completely rubbish in their own little ways and now Realtec on that is also locked at quite slow speeds.
Just looking for a known-good card that can manage ~300mbps without choking. Any clues?

@Oli I've got Atheros QCA9565 , b/g/n , works without hickups , had it for something like a year or so.

Oli
10:45 AM
ath9k driver?

Yessir

Oli
Oh that's nice and cheap. What sort of throughput can you get? Done any iperf tests to a wired server?

Well, I've only done one of those speed tests online, but that factors in routers that are between me and the destination
Never done any wired tests though

Oli
Ordered. If nothing else it's another brand to add to the trophy cabinet.

Yup. At least you won't have any driver pains with it, unlike broadcom

10:54 AM
> logrotate ‐ rotates, compresses, and mails system logs
What does the rotates part actually do?

moves file.log into file.log.1
$ ls /var/log/syslog*
/var/log/syslog /var/log/syslog.2.gz /var/log/syslog.4.gz /var/log/syslog.6.gz
/var/log/syslog.1 /var/log/syslog.3.gz /var/log/syslog.5.gz /var/log/syslog.7.gz
/var/log/syslog is current one, the rest are older ones and are compressed

rotates: /var/log/syslog.1 | compresses: /var/log/syslog.2.gz
Gotcha!

pretty much that
@ThomasWard Just curious of your opinion on this : unix.stackexchange.com/a/337042/85039 (not just my answer, but the question itself in general). Is the user's "fear" substantial enough ?

Hello guys

Hey

Please if anyone of you used arch and could help with my question on Unix and Linux please go over and have a look
1
Q: Can't boot arch in EFI mood, rEFInd stuck in installation

RonnieDroidI have been trying to install arch on my mid-2011 Macbook air, I moved the ISO to an 8GB USB-Drive with: dd bs=4M if=/home/ronnie/Downloads/archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress && sync Then, I restart and get the rEFInd boot-loader and have four choices to boot from the liveUSB. The first...

1 hour later…
12:25 PM
Ping @programFOX
I'm all alone :(
Meh, I'll go back to my course! PHD in biology yeah!

good morning

12:52 PM
@UbuntuUser Waste of time! Why would you get a PhD in biology? Don't you have anything constructive to do?
(I have one too :P)

1:06 PM
Hey guys. I know this question is all over the internet. But really, should I learn python or c++ if I want to be a Linux developer (one day) and is bytes and bits a good site to learn python from?

@RonnieDroid What's a Linux developer? If you want to modify the kernel, learn C (not C++). For anything else, learn whatever you like.

@terdon I mean to make software for it. No kernel stuff (because I know I'll never get there haha)

@RonnieDroid You can make software that runs on Linux using pretty much any language (although I wouldn't recommend objective C or .NET). For some things, scripting languages like Perl or Python are better, for others compiled languages like C work best. There is no one, good answer to what you're asking.
If you don't know how to program at all, you might want to start with a high level scripting language (so Python, Perl, Ruby etc). Or, conversely, you might want to start with a low level one like C to learn the very basics. It all depends on how deep you want to go.

@terdon okay. Thank you for the help. I know nothing until now. So I think I'll go with Python just because it is much easier (that's what I read) then if I learn one, I think I'll be able to learn more

Yes. Learning any language will make learning the next one easier.

1:15 PM
@terdon thank you, see you around later.

Oli
Most higher education CS places tend to start you with a high level language and let you build something, then teaching you about C to ruin your life, then teach you about assembly to make you really value C and then let you do whatever you like... By which point you end up back in a higher level language but appreciate what they're doing.
I don't think I'd ever advocate learning something as complicated as C++ as a first language. I'm sure it's possible but I've worked with people who started with C and C++ and it makes for some really cranky programmers.
C is a bit better because it's hard to do enough to get opinionated about. 99% of your first week with C is spent swearing at, crying on and pleading with the compiler.

@Oli well I already ruined my life writing my first novel (which still needs editing but I'll take a break from it for now) so I need to learn with fun, no ruining-lives languages please. Haha
@Oli oh good to know

Oli
Python is a good language but it has a few really nice (if you like that sort of thing) idioms that might ruin you for other languages.
Java is okay too, but mostly —unless you become an android developer— you get to put it down and forget all about it once you're done learning.

And, of course, none of this is in any way a question of opinion ;)

@Zacharee1 thanks <3 I will if I can handle the AU withdrawal ;)

1:24 PM
@Oli thank you for the information. So as I want to learn to make software for Linux, I think python well cover that, and I have no plans to do anything more than that for now.

Hey guys, I found a good question here: askubuntu.com/questions/871442/… I looked up a lot but didn't find a solution that worked. Any ideas?

Q: Why can there be only one accepted answer?

Ubuntu UserI read the tour page, and it said accepted answers aren't always the best, they just mean that it worked for that user. Well, it is possible to have two working answers, so why can we only have one accepted answer?

Hehe that's me there!
@Oli Hey guys, I found a good question here: askubuntu.com/questions/… I looked up a lot but didn't find a solution that worked. Any ideas?

@UbuntuUser why did you post two answers?
Oh wow. Make that three answers.

@terdon because I thought that something would work, it didn't, try again, and again, then I gave up

@UbuntuUser there's nothing wrong with correcting an answer.
Though I personally try to test first

Well, since it would work normally, I didn't want to delete it.
And they all worked on my ubuntu

then post them as one multipart answer

2:42 PM
Yes, that ^^
@UbuntuUser I deleted one of your three answers since that was just an request for more info from the OP. In general, while it's OK to post multiple answers if they each offer a different approach, it is usually better to post a single answer with both approaches.

@Serg simple indicator question askubuntu.com/q/871492/367990

Can anybody help me with this ? :)

Q: Names/Text missing in my Ubuntu 16.04

rohithI updated my Ubuntu 16.04 and now I have this issue. The file names and some texts are missing. I had this issue earlier but it didn't exist after rebooting the system. I don't want this problem again, do tell me what I can do :)

People need to not do that :(
If a question's on the main site, people will eventially see it. Dropping it into chat is just noise.

oh well

3:37 PM
Hello everybody ! :)
@terdon @UbuntuUser : I just saw this question -> askubuntu.com/questions/871423/dd-command-unrecognized-operand which includes a link to another question -> askubuntu.com/questions/710535/… for which I provided a working answer a long time ago. Today I received two downvotes ... Haven't you seen that the machine in the old question had a Legacy BIOS ? I am asking because of your comments on the new question. I updated the old posts.
@terdon @UbuntuUser I updated the old posts by highlighting this information to make it better visible ... in case you downvoted my correct (I tested them of course before posting) and working (accepted) answer, please revoke those downvotes ! Thanks in advance ! :)

3:53 PM
I didn't downvote you, @cl-netbox and I got the first ping.
The OP of the 2nd question mistakenly thought that you were giving a way of adding something to the bootloader and not a way to remove it altogether.
That said, what does the linux.bin do in your answer? I don't see how that could have ever worked. What am I missing @cl-netbox?
Also, what makes you think either I or @UbuntuUser had anything to do with your downvotes?

@terdon It copies the first sector of the ubuntu partition to the Windows partition ... I always did this in times when I dual booted ubuntu and Windows Vista using the Windows boot loader on an old Legacy BIOS machine !

@cl-netbox That's what the if= and of= do, but what does linux.bin do?
The error message has nothing to do with EFI/BIOS whatsoever. It is about giving dd an extra operand it doesn't know what to do with.

@terdon bcdedit /set {***} path \linux.bin ... this tells the Windows boot loader where to boot from ... again : please believe me, that did always work ... this is the problem with old answers and users not reading things carefully ! :)

@cl-netbox I am asking about the dd command:
dd if=/dev/sdXX of=/sdYY linux.bin bs=512 count=1
What is the linux.bin supposed to be doing there?
Did you mean of=/sdYY/linux.bin maybe?
@cl-netbox ?

@terdon Please wait ... I search for it on TechNet ... as I said : I used it years ago before I switched to linux completely. :)

4:08 PM
Yeah, well, I'm pretty sure you didn't, I'm afraid. That's just not the right format for dd.
You want of=/sdYY/linux.bin if you're trying to create the bin file.

@terdon You are right ... I accidentally added a space ... I update the answer at once ! :)

Well, that explains your downvotes :)
Looks like it was you who "didn't read things carefully".

@terdon Did I ever say I am perfect ? I wanted to make the answer as short as possible ... in that old time I copied the first sector to an USB and from there into Windows ... later I tried it directly ... and saw that it worked ... used it over and over again ... :)

Well, just make sure next time before calling people out in chat, that's all.

@terdon As you can see, I care a lot about the quality of my posts ... so without talking to you I might have overseen that space forever ... please bare in mind that I wrote the answer more than one year ago. :)

4:22 PM
And that's perfectly understandable. All I'm saying is that you came on a little strong there. A simple "hey, is anything wrong with my answer?" would have been much better than addressing specific users (neither of whom had anything to do with your downvotes, AFAIK) and accusing users of "not reading carefully". That's all.

asking people to revoke downvotes (even if you qualified it with "in case") is a risky thing. you can't prove who downvoted you, so it is your words vs. their words and that isn't a productive exercise at all.

4:33 PM
I think 8 months of using OS X made me a stupid Ubuntu user, now i can't find a question i can actually answer :-D

@terdon okay ... I apologize ! ... by the way, I found an old technet blog post -> blogs.technet.microsoft.com/port25/2006/10/13/…

@cl-netbox No need to apologize, I know you get passionate about your answers :)
And yes, of course the right dd command (as shown in that post) would work. The error the other OP was getting was because of the space.
And a good thing too since your command would have wiped the beginning of their drive. That's 100% for the question you answered, but not very good for what the OP wanted to do.

@terdon Answer updated already ... is it "perfect" now ? Hope so ... :)

Looks good to me :)

@terdon Thank you ! :)
@terdon : when this user wants to boot ubuntu by using the Windows boot loader, it won't work to add something to the EFI partition -> askubuntu.com/questions/871423/dd-command-unrecognized-operand

5:31 PM
Ah, forgot to say : please excuse me @UbuntuUser that I mistakenly bothered you ! :)

Anyone here who has experience with pass?
This thing, specifically: passwordstore.org

5:47 PM
If anyone hasn't voted in George's poll yet...
Which will happen first?

poll doesn't load

wow those 4 choices
tough poll

I know :)

All 4 are unlikely, ouch
I'm between ipv6 and linux one.

hey guys, i wanna ask something, i was thinking of using something light weight on my laptop, but has good looks nonetheless, also i have a very specific need, something that is more towards web based usage. i like peppermint os. but is there something a little older, with a stable history, just asking !!!!!!!

5:58 PM
@daddyodevil lubuntu, or elementary.io

WOW @Fabby is making the news techcrunch.com/2017/01/13/fabby-grabs-2m xD
kidding

Lubuntu is more lightweight but I found elementary.io more... immersive.

lubuntu, i mentioned good looks , and elementary, i dont like how they display the menu on top, tried it, didnt like it @arda

kubuntu?

kde is neither light not web friendly

6:00 PM
It's not that lightweight, but uses KDE plasma which is considered good looking by many
ChromeOS (or whatever the install-to-any-pc branch was called)

i know, kde plasma 5 is real eye candy, but in my usage it went up to about 1.3 gigs of ram usage in a basic install with my required softwares on boot

How much ram do you have?

8, but running around 15 - 20 tabs in chromium and matlab and weka in the back, leaves barely 100 mbs at times while i work , i am university student, i need to run algorithms on datasets

I think that that one new-ish ubuntu flavor announced a lightweight version.

ubuntu budgie
ya , i love the budgie DE
I am waiting for a stable release of 17.04, and i cant really afford to have my system crashing on me, my supervisor will kill me
so not using the testing releases of ubuntu 17.04 or debian
as i said, i really loved peppermint os, but it crashed bith in my actual laptop and the vms i made with different setups
i would have loved to get arch, but cant really afford giving days to just setting up, and keep fixing issues of software compatibilty ( trust me arch takes time ) !!!!!

Does anyone know of an instagram client for Linux that allows uploads?

Does anyone know if it's possible to use both PCI-E graphics card along with on-board video for dual monitor?
i am able to achieve this on windows by installing on-board video driver
i just want to know if i can do the same for windows as i don't have the adapters to use my card's aditional ports

9:10 PM
crap, I just noticed a big mistake on an answer of mine -.-
to be honest I'm more bothered with the fact I don't know what the issue is then the answer mistake itself

9:46 PM
@nosthertus That depends on your BIOS/UEFI.

@NathanOsman UEFI has the muti-display enabled

And it isn't working?

not properly
the second display just shows ubuntu loading
and then it stays like that

Hmm...

and image of ubuntu loading but frozen, nvidia-settings cannot detect the monitor though

9:50 PM
What type of onboard graphics do you have? AMD? Intel?

it's Intel

@Hizqeel I think I'd call that an answer. Not a good answer but it is giving a limited workaround. . .

@nosthertus then it isn't surprising that nvidia-settings doesn't see it.

neither display menu sees the second monitor

But the loading screen appears, so it's allocating a framebuffer.
Very strange that the display server can't see it.

10:05 PM
yes, it shows the loading dots animation, but then it freezes when it gets to login
and something more strage is that it gets to work again on ubuntu logo when shutting down
i don't know if i should install ubuntu again just to try if i could have a second monitor working on on-board graphics
the graphics driver were installed through software update, using proprietary tested

Yeah.

10:21 PM
Someone remind me of trying askubuntu.com/a/869676/367990 later, please... I'm sure I'll forget it again until I'm on my Ubuntu laptop the next time.

user136984
Well, I'm back to what some think is a scary old sock! :D

user136984
Happy Russian Old New Year for tomorrow!

user136984
And goodnight! :)

@terdon I realized that later but Should we flag a NA to such answers giving a limited workaround on an Old Question like that?

@Hizqeel well, if you feel it is actually trying to answer, then no, don't flag. If it's bad, just downvote. The NAA flag should basically be used for things that are, well, not answers. Say, if I ask "How can I list all files in a directory?" and someone answers "With cucumbers!", that should be flagged.
The age of the question is completely irrelevant.

10:29 PM
@NathanOsman George is the man, but I can't be bothered to log into twitter right now.

Got it !

@Hizqeel there's some more detail here:
16
A: How do I flag correctly?

terdonThe following are some guidelines for flagging on Ask Ubuntu. These guidelines are derived from existing policies set out in the help center, Ask Ubuntu Meta and Meta SE, and were further refined by a discussion between the current mods. First, a few general points about flagging: As a general...

@TheXed Lol

11:08 PM
guys, how can I insert a newline in an answer without breaking two lines? So there isn't much space between the lines?
oh, I tried html <br> and it worked

11:20 PM
@IanC please no. Use Markdown and not HTML wherever possible. That is, leave two trailing spaces on the previous line followed by a linebreak.

@ByteCommander thanks! I'll use that instead then

Here's the official guide @IanC askubuntu.com/editing-help

11:41 PM
That moment when you get SIGINT and SIGTERM mixed up.

So what process did you INTerminate?

@ByteCommander lol, that indicator question was too easy, there's like tons of them already

v(^_^)v

._. i need to fix my sleep somehow

who doesn't...?
@Rinzwind I might have a new suggestion for your music playlist. Do you know "Nemesea"?

11:51 PM
yeah . . . and school starts next week . . . .gosh

started this week for me already, you lucky boy :p

^_^v

man, let me tell you a story about frustration
A guy spends some time writing an answer which he believes is right. But then reads it again and realizes it's wrong. So he grabs gdb, opens like 5 tabs on gedit and disassembly a program, writing what EVERY assembly instruction (maybe 2 or 3 I didn't know the purpose) did, mapped the whole stack, examined the memory on the stack
after hours of work, he realizes his answer was actually right, he just quoted the wrong part of the man page of gcc
the end
