all that to earn like +25 rep on Stack Overflow, I got less rep for answering that complex question than I earned to write a script that changed the terminal colors when you opened a new g-term
at least I can -s-l-e-e-p- get ready for work in peace now, guess the answer was more for me than for the OP :)

Yeah . . . Happens to me occasionally - I spend time on writing nice, beautiful answer, only to realize something is wrong or don't get much response to that answer at all
Eh, at least you've had fun with writing the code, right ?

@Serg not much code writing today, I just used gdb on the OPs code snippet :/
but it's fine, at least the question is answered

Meanwhile, 140 points on Unix & Linux and only 70 here

alright, I might edit the answer later to make it more easily understandable, but at least it's more accurate now, I'm done with that for the day! haha

12:13 AM
cc @Rinzwind ^

wow
Unifi/Ubiquiti has control software for Ubuntu

12:45 AM
@Zacharee1 I thought they had a webui?

they do
but you need the controller software
because it's localhost

1:15 AM
well, time to go to work
see you all later!

1:53 AM
woo, that was painful. ethernet wired to my room.
no more stupid wifi issues

So . . . How screwed I am ?
Green are classes, yellow - work

oh i was about to say, why are your classes so damn long
let's see. 2 hours studying for hour of lecture.
very. you are very screwed.
wanna know how i can tell, @Serg?

Yeah ?

you're not scaling time in a sane fashion.
you have hour increments, and then suddenly... 30 minutes.

Didn't wanna make the graph too large

2:02 AM
but 17 hours of classes, * 2... 34 hours of studying
so you have 51 hours each week to class.
including work, that's 86 hours per week busy
you have 168 hours in a week, subtracting 86... gives us 82 free hours per week.
let's say you have a sane sleeping schedule and get 8 hours a day, for 56 hours a week asleep.
bringing you to 26 hours free per week.

brb , editing

let's say you're in meals for 2 hours per day, that's another 14 hours.
meaning you only have 12 hours free per week to do what you want.
let's say you spend four hours a week shopping, doing housework, etc...
that's 8 hours a week free. Not fun.
Or, you get a tiny bit more than an hour a day to do what you want with your life.
and that doesn't include commutes.

much more engineer-like

Let's just say it's close enough
I'm screwed , probably

2:13 AM
so that's 13 hours of classes. 31 hours of work.
39 + 17 = 70 hours busy (classes, studying, work)
98 hours not-busy - 56 hours (8 hours asleep per day) = 42 hours awake non-busy

where did 39 come from ?

13 hours for classes, 36 hours for studying. (as per the 2 hours / unit studying rule)

ah

42 hours ANB - 14 hours (2 hrs/day in meals) = 28 hours free
take away four hours for home care and personal hygiene, etc, you get 24h free.
24h is definitely better, but that still doesn't include travel.
let's say 30 minutes of travel per day, that brings you down to free hours free / day.

It's about 1 hour each day, one way. So 2 hours for commute back and forth * 7 = 14

2:18 AM
so 10 hours free.
so slightly more than an hour a day actually free.

@Videonauth I wish I had 2M$v in funding... ;-)

provided you don't have anything unexpected, need to review lectures, etc.
or ~ 1hr 25 minutes per day free.

If I drop a class, I cannot use college insurance ( I think ) , but if I drop work - that's less money . . .

you can probably steal that 5 minutes from somewhere to round yourself up to 1.5 hours free / day.

And originally I was registered for 5 classes . . .

2:22 AM
that's one hell of an overload.

Such doge, much wow

@Serg homemade ramen :D

Mmmm, yumzy
and with tofu

@Zacharee1 your own?

Yehs

2:28 AM
i should probably make actual food one day.

@KazWolfe oui
Ish
Made it with my mom

i mean, teriyaki chicken plus top ramen (without the garbage packet) is okay, but not great...

My mom pan fried udon noodles and chicken meatballs today. I've taken all that stuff, but never get around to cooking it. At least she does it. And far better than i do

stahp making me hungry
i have no good noodles in my house, and all my chicken is still frozen.

Chicken is Frozen ? Well , you gotta . . . let it go . . .

2:32 AM
no, it was not cheap chicken.

Huehuehue

So, essentially, I'll have to pretty much wake up like 5:00 AM daily ( just to keep it consistent ) and come back home around 11
Screwed I am . . .

@Serg why? you get a whole hour free! /s

1 hour for me is basically nothing ~(._. )~ I'm a turtle, but definitely not a ninja

well, you could always not eat.
plus your plans are only to sleep like six hours, so that's a bit more time.

2:44 AM
OK, history class is probably going to be an essay . . . or exam with an essay . . . I might be able to pull it off. But EET 4640 and EET 4020 . . . might be a giant PITA

also the new nvidia shield looks awesome.

ok something is totally baffling me; I was having problems with PHP and apache so I just switched to a totally different Ubuntu image (16.10 server), which has no server package installed at all, to my knowledge (I ran a sudo find -name "apache" from / and nothing), yet when I navigate to the IP address of the server I'm still seeing 'It works!'. Huh?

@JustInTimeBerlake I think Ubuntu Server comes with lighttpd installed?

ah, ok
do you know where the document root is by any chance?

you can see what is listening though.

2:49 AM
I had a quick google but I could find info on default doc root
yeah, I'll check processes

netstat -tulpn | grep 80

"The program 'lighttpd' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt install lighttpd"
no processes on port 80

then there's no way that server is hosting a website.

yet I type my ip and up it comes
and down it goes...
stttttrrange

unless there's something similar on 443, there's something else going on -- if it doesn't show up in netstat, it's not listening.
what browser are you using?

2:51 AM
firefox and chromium

perhaps...

there's no way that server could be hosting anything without 80 open, so it was something else.

I got a message when connecting about a possible man in the middle, but that was just coz I changed server distros probably

on SSH?

2:53 AM
yeah

that's normal, different private keys for each install

yeah, I didn't think that was related

Yeah, I think I'm not going to be on AU this spring as much as before

:(
But good luck with your studies.

3:09 AM
Thanks。I'm definitely gonna need some luck in
Electromagnetic Fields class
I think all my plans to start learning new things are gonna go out the window, and gonna have to focus on the classes, because holly heck

3:39 AM
but onions are tasty

Especially in pho or barbecue

mmm

4:07 AM
sweet...my audio is broken in the latest windows 10 preview :-D

Realtek?

@NathanOsman Yeah I think so.

pssst lspci

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that doesn't work on Windows 10

I assumed you had Ubuntu setup in dual boot :D
Which reminds me is the Ubuntu Bash for Windows limited without the lspci and other juicy commands?

4:14 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nope, I have Ubuntu installed on a Lenovo Thnkpad
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I think you can run any command you want to in Bash for Windows, but that doesn't mean it will work.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix lspci probably depends on /sys being correctly filled in.
Which I highly doubt WSL does.

@Serg I finally got nautilus to set login wallpaper with only one password, plus added a whole bunch of error checking: askubuntu.com/questions/871312/…
@NathanOsman give M$ 18 months and they'll have Linux for Windows...retailing at $149 :D

Lol.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Good job. Have a cookie

Actually pretty shitty job... took about four hours for version 2.
sometimes working with bash...well just makes you want to bash your head on the wall

4:20 AM
WSL does not support low-level device stuff, @WinEunuuchs2Unix
this includes block devices and networking things

Well there's an opportunity to write a fake lspci that read the registry or device manager, etc ;)

Can't, i dont think any APIs are offered to read either of those.

Sounds like Ubuntu for Windows is just a glorified DOS shell... does it have zenity and other utilities?

some
not stuff related to X, though.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix On a more technical note, they've basically modified the Windows kernel to process Linux syscalls.

4:25 AM
it will be interesting to learn about it some day I guess
@NathanOsman That doesn't really mean very much to me.

yeah, WSL is basically a kernel module through LXSS.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well, you asked :)

it's sort of like a VM without the "virtual" part or the "sandbox" part.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix maybe you should start learning something else, Python for instance ?

@KazWolfe It's very similar to Wine.
Only operating in reverse.

4:26 AM
@NathanOsman hence forth the saying "careful what you ask for"

@NathanOsman yeah, basically, but down to the kernel instead of userspace.

Yeah, but it's the same with WSL - since you don't need administrator privileges to run Linux applications in WSL.

@Serg that script you linked to me this morning at 4 am looked more like C than what I pictured Python to look like :D
I don't know how you log these incredibly long hours Serg...honestly.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that was bash as well , and yes - that's C-style of programming. Let's just say, it's better style than pain bash scripting
I log incredibly long hours , because i am basically 24/7 on AU, I check it on phone AND on laptop

@Serg I was thinking of your code versus bash this morning.... the nice thing about bash is people can simply copy and paste the code.

4:30 AM
but yeah, @WinEunuuchs2Unix, if you want to understand WSL, imagine Wine, except it's "emulating" Linux, and it's in the kernel, running on Windows 10.

@KazWolfe I hate to say it but I haven't got wine installed yet :(

@WinEunuuchs2Unix My code can be copy and pasted too, even more conveniently, because I write in functions, and I can simply copy specific functions for re-use

but you know what wine is. same general principle.

Kinda like building lego script

yes I've read lots about wine...

4:31 AM
hey, what if i run wine in WSL?

you can call it WWSL then :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix red wine, or white wine?

I have white wine in the fridge... but am sticking to my beer :D

@KazWolfe try running WINE on WSL on WIN10 virtual machine on top of another VM, on top of Ubuntu workstation , connecting to it via Remmina from another machine
Totally pointless but sounds cool

Lots of W's there... add a few more by connecting over the WORLD WIDE WEB.

4:34 AM
@Serg that sounds like me at 4 am trying to get something to work.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix light beer or dark beer, or fruity beer?

but, we still need more abstraction! have the entire stack run on KVM

cheap beer...after the first two you ignore the taste.

heh, i drink coffee like you drink beer.

Someone said cheap beer is like having sex on canoe

4:35 AM
coffee is probably better for you but who knows?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I thought we where almost friends...

f'ing close to water

like how many peeps have had sex on canoe?...lol

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I am either going to have to buy you some good beer, or re-evaluate our relatingship...

@Serg that just sounds bad.

4:37 AM
Well it's pay day... I'll buy some Budweiser next trip.... or maybe MGD

so you all drink the instant coffee crystals of beer.

@KazWolfe no containers?
WHAT KIND OF HIPSTER ARE YOU?

I was thinking maybe I should quit coffee for a few weeks

@Serg 0_0

@JourneymanGeek One that gets extremely annoyed with too much virtualization
and one without a hipster beard.
and rectangular glasses with thin rims opposed to the more square-size lenses with giant rims.

4:40 AM
in Root Access, Dec 23 '16 at 11:12, by Burgi
the beard makes you look even wiser than normal

and without beanies or scarves.
so i'm a very non-hipster.

When I was a kid they were called Hippies

nope, no psychedelic drugs here.

just starbucks :D

nope.
i don't want anything to do with starbucks.
i'll make my own coffee.

4:45 AM
@Everyone any recommended links for cool wallpaper with Linux / Tux / Ubuntu / space stuff?
well your own coffee is good, grinding beans and what not.

yes, home-ground coffee. freshly roasted when i can get it.

BTW This Friday the 13th comes with a full Wolf moon... thought you'd like to know.

yes. i am on the prowl.

@KazWolfe Awoooooooooooooo!

@NathanOsman Basically.

4:50 AM
Thought so.

Except a lot more like a wolf than a person trying to imitate a wolf.
So, better lock your doors. Kaz is on the prowl.
Not sure about @Serg or @ByteCommander, though.

Well, I'm a Colorado Wolf, which means I'm very mellow . . . .
Like . . . I don't wanna bite ya, i just want ya ganja

as a bonus it's legal now

New challenge: Leave a witty remark on all the spam.
@Serg but munchies!

@KazWolfe I've plenty of noodles and potato chips

4:56 AM
I'm so not leaving a remark on that last spam for erectile

@Serg but the taste of human blood on a night like this is unique...
(and now i'm on a list)

Meh, Pho's still better
reading receipts from my bank's ATM is quite interesting, there's quite a couple things you can tell about a person by receipts

@NathanOsman How did your AMDGPU bounty turn out?

Not sure. I don't have access to my desktop ATM.
But I got what looks like a decent answer.
I awarded the bounty to the fellow.

That's good... I had to like beg people to answer a nVidia question so the bounty could be awarded
Intertesting though I read a question a couple of days ago where the OP says under Kernel 4.4.0-57 AMDGPU was working perfectly which makes it sound like it's kernel 4.9 in disguise.

5:07 AM
It does work in older kernels.
But not for Sea Islands or Southern Islands cards.
(Which is what I have. Basically GCN 1.0 cards.)

Hrm. My website keeps crashing.

Ruh roh

This is odd.
I didn't change anything.

for a week my Ubuntu kept freezing every 10 seconds, video would pause for split second and last word on tv would repeat. Mouse would freeze as would keyboard. Turned out to be blacklisted Nouveau driver was loaded in the kernel and I just had to "modprobe -r nouveau" it???

5:23 AM
Yeah, those types of problems are almost always universally caused by drivers.
@RPiAwesomeness ...and it has corrected itself. O_o

I have a rather interesting setup on my server.
Everything is running within its own Docker container.
So my website, blog, SMTP gateway, a wiki, George, tbot, Jenkins, URL shortener, sechatr, and some stuff for clients - all containers.
Oh, and Gogs (private GitHub clone).

I guess so

It's all monitored by Monit, which sends emails when things go down.
But email isn't cool enough so I wrote an SMTP-to-Twitter gateway.

I keep an eye on @nathanosman_dev's servers and complain loudly when they go down.

Jyothinath[this occurs all the time when I use ubuntu] i run ubuntu in 2GB ram processor Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz × 2 Graphics Intel® 945G x86/MMX/SSE2 os type 32 bit disk 155.3 i think this all is enough for Ubuntu...

What in the world?
I get the feeling something is missing from this question.

Hi everyone! :)
Yeah. There is quite a lot wrong with that question. I came into chat to check if I'm missing something about it... seems to me it's too broad, off-topic, and really sketchy.
Before it was deleted, I posted a comment that I hope doesn't make an assumptions (good or ill) and is polite but firm. I hope my comment is appropriate; if anyone thinks it's not, please let me know. (If any < 10k users feel like reading my comment, I can reproduce it here; otherwise, I won't bother.)

@muru wow. i did not know that there was a DOX api.
@EliahKagan Eliah in chat? Wat.

well, hello, and welcome

6:23 AM
Thanks!

I am getting sad, which will make me get fat, because i am eating too much chocolate, it is been two days and no one has answered my question, not even a try :-P

@RonnieDroid link?

@KazWolfe It is arch related
1
Q: Can't boot arch in EFI mode, rEFInd stuck in installation

RonnieDroidI have been trying to install arch on my mid-2011 Macbook air, I moved the ISO to an 8GB USB-Drive with: dd bs=4M if=/home/ronnie/Downloads/archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress && sync Then, I restart and get the rEFInd boot-loader and have four choices to boot from the liveUSB. The first...

ah, unix.se

yes

6:28 AM
oh, it's a mac.

Yes, unfortunately

the wonder of garbage UEFI implementations

though i use Ubuntu only
@KazWolfe Exactly, which is why i am worried to install arch in Legacy mode, because i am not sure what will happen then.

@RonnieDroid it... might work? let me look at a couple things.

okay

6:33 AM
try booting directly from your install media, using the Option key

I do, doesn't work

what does it do, if anything?
if nothing, your bootloader probably isn't configured correctly on your USB, try remaking it.

@KazWolfe It gives me the list that states, Archanywhere x86-64, UEFI shell v1 and v2

from the Option menu without rEFInd?

i choose the first option, the screen goes blank, and stays like that
@KazWolfe yes
Let me check one more time

@RonnieDroid I'm just going to guess off the top of my head that your ISO wasn't necessarily built right. Do MD5 validation first to make sure the ISO was downloaded right.

@KazWolfe Yes i checked that, tried different ways to make the LiveUSB, nothing works
@KazWolfe I am going to try it on my other laptop and see.

hm. i'll keep my eye open for anything, and i'll let you know if i find anything.

@KazWolfe Good, thank you.
@KazWolfe so i try it with two more laptops, it doesn't work there too, only works in Legacy mode

yeah, i'd suspect EFI on your install disk is strange.

6:43 AM
sane schedule or more money ?

@Serg sane schedule.
you can get more money later or doing odd jobs, but you can't get your sanity back.
and you won't hit burnout.

@KazWolfe But i tried many other arch based OSs, non of them boots in EFI mode, but Ubuntu works with no problem

@RonnieDroid Is SecureBoot active on your other machines?

@KazWolfe I turned it off

but i also won't have money to visit my gf in China. Or have backup if suddenly my father decides to increase monthly payment

6:46 AM
well, if you want to risk burnout...

@Serg Some times one needs to go for more money, if one has the stamina for it.

if you have a sane schedule, you can do the occasional gig.

@KazWolfe I just turned off fastboot in my windows 10 machine to see if that makes any difference.

@RonnieDroid You mentioned Archanywhere?
What about using the official arch distribution?

@KazWolfe Yes
@KazWolfe Tired that.

6:50 AM
Hm, strange. I can't think of anything else right now, but I'll go and ping the U&L guys too, because I'm not that good at arch
pinged u&l guys, keep an eye out for anything on the post

@KazWolfe Oh that would be great

paces back and forth around the AU room

@Serg did you have enough coffee?

not enough apparently

huh.
i'd still go for the sane thing

6:55 AM
Ideally, I'd love to take the "f*ck it all, and do something else" option, but there's not much plan behind it and it will piss off a lot of people

if father raises your rent, just don't pay the difference.

@serge just if theis will make you better, i work as a project manager and coordinator at an NGO. I work at an Android software repairing shop (Strange job, only find it in Iraq). writing my fist novel, Dating, and started learning python. :-P

I actually wanted to write a book this year for Ubuntu programming
Also, welcome to the ranks of pythonistas !
Python is an amazing language

and i am going insane, but i like it. so it depends on what you want the future you to be.
@Serg wow, that is great
@Serg Yeah i know, it was so fun to learn to do the Hello world and the loop :-D
and i am going insane, but i like it. so it depends on what you want the future you to be.
@Serg Yeah i know, it was so fun to learn to do the Hello world and the loop :-D
@Serg wow, that is great

Ideally, I want future me to be working as sysadmin or a dev in China, maybe even work with my degree there ^_0
