I don't know what that guy is doing, but it looks like a really bad idea: askubuntu.com/q/862949/367990

It's just sudo's secure path thing
they are getting the wrong python because that local dir is before /usr/bin in their path
(you're supposed to do that with anaconda right?) (vague recollection of @edwinksl answering a question about it)
we can fix this folks...

anaconda puts its python interpreter in front of the one in /usr/bin by default
so you are right about sudo being a hack
that ln -s "solution" is also a hack
but it is also late, so i will let you all deal with this snakey problem

@edwinksl I don't know what they should do - they need to install the module in anaconda?
I don't know how to do it
anyways, catch you later :)

9:28 AM
Idk how to tame anacondas either. I only know ordinary pythons...

@Zanna need more info imo. i have no idea what OP is trying to do

Q: What happens to hats at the end of the Winter Bash?

ChristianF97The question says it all - do we get to keep them or do they go away?

@AskUbuntuMeta they go away, RTFM please

lol
the OP doesn't even appear to be wearing a hat...

hat hater smh

9:37 AM
hahaha so why are they asking

good morning!

no idea although OP does have 2 hats

A: What happens to hats at the end of the Winter Bash?

Here are some of the happy children from last year: No, the hats simply d...

@IanC evening (?) :)

@Zanna still 7:40am here, just got back from work, what time is it in England?

9:44 AM
09:43 - do you mean 7:40pm?
because for sure Brasil is more than 2 hrs behind?

I thought it was more too, but I just realized we are in GMT-3, +1 hour from summer time :p

wow!
morning!

christmas got close really fast (actually, I think this whole year went by pretty fast)
spending the holidays on your hometown with your folks @Zanna?

@IanC yeah for a few days at least :) what about you?

I got lucky this year, my days off starts tomorrow and goes up to christmas eve, so I'm meeting my parents and we are going to my aunts house :)

9:57 AM
new year's eve?
that's awesome :)
gonna go do some stuffs, later all

actually just up to christmas eve, I'm gonna have to spend news year here because I'll work on 1st Jan

(PS to non-English-L1 folks: you're right, stuff is uncountable, I am using incorrect grammar as a kind of crappy humour)
@IanC awww

but it's good enough I'll be able to spend christmas there, I used to go on my aunts often last year, then I got this job and haven't been able to go there once this year

@profile101 Did you extract the .zip file? Are you running make build_dev inside the project folder?

yes @IanC thanks a lot, your comment mean getting water in desert, i updated question, please check update part in question....

ugh i upgraded to 16.10, and gpg wiped my priv keys. Had to reimport.

can you run ls on the folder you are running make build_dev in and write the output here on chat? @profile101

@IanC pls check above image

I see, this file you downloaded isn't the project, it's Composer, which is supposed to install the dependencies of the project you're trying to install @profile101

11:03 AM
@IanC i downloaded from here : github.com/tecnickcom/tc-lib-pdf

you downloaded it from getcomposer.org/installer, this is a PHP dependency manager
the instructions to install it are here getcomposer.org/download
after you install it, you have to download the GitHub project, unzip it and then run make build_dev there
oh, it might be installed already when you ran curl https://getcomposer.org/installer | php, try downloading the TCPDF and installing it @profile101

okay you are telling i downloaded wrong zip file @IanC , okay i will check and let you know......

you didn't download the wrong zip file, you downloaded Composer, which takes care of PHP dependencies, you need it to install TCPDF, but then you need to download TCPDF itself.. @profile101
wget github.com/tecnickcom/tc-lib-pdf/archive/develop.zip
unzip develop.zip
cd tc-lib-pdf-develop
make build_dev
^ On the folder you want to install it @profile101

Q: What to do with obsolete question?

Alex TimmerI asked a question some time earlier. I didn't get any answers, but by now I found out that the question itself is obsolete, because the problem isn't a Ubuntu config error, but rather a hardware issue. I've since edited the question to reflect this, but I was wondering what the right practice wo...

i will try above commands @IanC
@IanC pls check above image

11:17 AM
I don't think it's finding composer, try running which composer and write the output here @profile101

@IanC can you please tell how to find its running which composer

I mean, it's definitely not finding composer, you probably didn't install it right

looks like i installed correctly when i used abov comands suggested by you
wget https://github.com/tecnickcom/tc-lib-pdf/archive/develop.zip
unzip develop.zip
cd tc-lib-pdf-develop

try to follow the instructions here to install Composer and then start over
those commands didn't install anything, they just downloaded TCPDF source code
well, got to go, hardly had any sleep since yesterday, maybe someone more experienced with PHP can help you, but you should try installing composer first

i will try @IanC thanks a lot

11:22 AM
np, good luck!

11:44 AM
@Serg @Videonauth @ByteCommander @Kaz wanna get back to the bot ? :D Hi !

12:08 PM
@MarkYisri Hi. I'm at the university, having classes atm. So not now.

@Byte okay, fine with me

12:30 PM
hi all please check this link : sbdev2.kidsdial.com:81/php/site6/tcpdf/examples/example_011.php , i can bale to download pdf in our server , is that means tcpdf is installed in our server ?

12:47 PM
what's wrong @profile101?
i can see it

here i can see it too

i wanted to confirm whether it installed or not @MarkYisri is it correctly installed ?

@profile101 If you installed it correct, no one can tell you from here, all we can tell you is, that it displays the example pdf. You know we dont have glass balls here to guess your configuration

@profile101 how can we know if something is installed on your server?
You just told us to look at some random pdf file.

> i can bale to download pdf in our server , is that means tcpdf is installed in our server ?
This completely does not parse.

1:03 PM
thanks guys, is there any other way i can check "TCPDF" installed correctly or not.....

@Videonauth "glass balls" sounds weird in English... :P

indeed it does

It would also be "crystal ball" at least...

1:17 PM
@profile101 well now since you heard that it displays the pdf go on and test its function like downloading, bookmarking etc

is downloading fine @Videonauth also rotating and other things loooks fine, but still not sure it is installed correctly or not

I think it is save to assume that you installed it correctly, since it works, but if you configured it correctly for your needs you only can confirm going through the donfig files and check them intensely for maybe mis-configurations, with that i cant help you as have now experience with tcpdf

thanks @Videonauth i will update you regarding this soon.....

@Zanna Jut in case you want to transcribe a video once again... askubuntu.com/questions/513435/…
(I'm at the university, so I did not watch it, just check whether it's worth the effort first in case you're going to do it)

1:52 PM
@ByteCommander 777 ... bwrrrrrrrrr shakes head

2:03 PM
hmmm it's a long video...
suitably pugatorial task

@Zanna ar you both talking about a deleted post ?

yeah, LOA deleted post

Hello.

hiya

Whats up?

2:05 PM
ah ok no wonder I was unable to find any video :p

I'll see if I can transcribe it and then we can undelete the post...

A: Accessing shared folder between Windows 7 and Ubuntu VM from the VM?

user284234In fact, I just typed the wrong username to my Windows 7 host machine. Here is the proof that I succeeded to access to the shared folder:

@MarkYisri probably deleted his SE account
then usernames get anonymised

You guys should be proud of me, I have gone a full 24 hours without having to use physical violence to solve any disputes.

(INSERT @TheXed TO TABLE nice)

2:14 PM
hmm do we really need this post? the video is from 11.10 and surely the post is a dupe?
no I'm not transcribing this, it's long and rambly and says the same thing as the top answer, but at great length

Hello everybody ! :)

Aww... fell for a review audit.
Answer looked valid but contained a non-obvious spam link.

2:35 PM
@cl-netbox Hi !

@MarkYisri Hi Mark ! :)

@ByteCommander I got banned for that yesterday!

@Zanna You got banned ??? What have you done ? Hi Zanna ! :) Good afternoon ! :)

I got banned from reviewing for failing an audit - because I thought it was an audit, only the other kind of audit... Stupid me
good afternoon :)
nothing to review - I suspect people are hat-hunting in the review queues hehehe

@Zanna hmmm ... whatever these audits are good for ... in your case I think it shows some weakness of the system ...

2:51 PM
happy side effect of hats...
@cl-netbox very kind of you to say :) I was careless. Seth very kindly unbanned me
I must say @cl-netbox your hat is very nice indeed

@Zanna of hats and mod elections
Hi :)

@Zanna You're welcome - truly meant : you are one of the most reliable and valuable "improvers" of site content ! :)

Q: Winter Bash 2016 - All Hats

DavidI decided to start the traditional secret hats post, but instead of just another "here is how you get the secret hats" post, to also add in all the hats. @WinEunuuchs2Unix lol

4:50 PM
what to do with this? I usually flag these, but am I right? askubuntu.com/questions/518664/xrdp-first-login-fails/…
trying to judge how likely it is that this could work on Ubuntu...

@Zanna left a comment to see if OP tested it on Ubuntu. I don't think it's fair to post " This works on my other Linux" answer , while we're clearly an Ubuntu site, so . . .

thanks @Serg I think that is a good action... but if they do not reply, should I flag it I wonder?

@Zanna that's a good question for meta ;)

@Zanna The answer is off-topic because it applies to Red Hat only (as per poster's own link). I've left a comment but there is no close button and the flag button only allows for 5 unrelated actions...ie spam, mod intervention, low-quality, etc. Should I flag as "low quality"?

user136984
5:16 PM
The guy doesn't really offer much proof for this but it's still interesting to read something completely different once in a while... And he is writing in a reputable news paper so it's interesting.

Well, so far so goo. Answered like 3 questions, quite satisfied with them. Good start

@WinEunuuchs2Unix flag it as not an answer

@Zanna it is an answer, arguably, it's just not suitable

@Seth have you listened to fun.?

@Zacharee1 Seth listens to all the fun we have in this chat . . . he's listening even when you sleep,muhahahaha

5:21 PM
Sigh
@Serg that's generally how we use NAA.

le sigh ?

Q: What should I do with answers about other Linux distros?

ZannaWhen I see an answer "here's how to do this in Windows", I flag it and leave a comment explaining that this is off-topic. All such flags have been marked helpful (but if I was wrong, please tell me...) I would do the same for Mac... And I think I should do the same for answers that say "here's ...

@Serg it's not an answer to the question of how I can do this in Ubuntu, arguably

@Zanna that was fast

@Zanna true . . .

5:29 PM
@Zanna Done :) Thanks for pointing it out in the first place!

Is there a limit on how many answers you can post in a day ?

@AskUbuntuMeta There was an answer somewhere for Linux mint and it had 10 upvotes o.O

@jokerdino well that's somewhat of a different thing - LM is Ubuntu-based, and a lot of solutions are applicable. We're talking about solution for RHEL and whether it can be applicable to Ubuntu

answered but rushed

@Serg just a side thought

5:40 PM
@Zacharee1 no?

@jokerdino changed it to Cinnamon Desktop instead of Linux Mint

> (Tested on mint 17.2)
Sorry, just having a little fun.

@jokerdino What's also wrong with that picture is that the question is about Gnome Shell . . .

Also use this → to replace that arrow.
What picture? :O

@jokerdino look at the title of the question. It asks for "GNOME shell"

5:44 PM
yeah, there is an answer for fluxbox at the end even.

well . . .uh . . . that's awkward . . .

I guess it is helpful for someone somewhere so I am going to let that poor answer stay.

rolls eyes, but says nothing

I mean the fluxbox one.

^^ that's called non-verbal communication

5:48 PM
Yet to decide on RHEL.

When you look at RHEL link on github it quite clearly states different steps for Debian and Red Hat. The poster only listed his Red Hat answer.

Well, I personally downvoted the minty and fluxbox one. I mean . . . it's not exactly fair to have answer give a solution for different desktop, when OP asked for GNOME shell specifically . . .

ahhh
poor them :/

hello

Hullo

5:56 PM
kak ty? @Serg
wanted to go out and get some ice cream, but it's raining -.-

@IanC I'm alright, and you ?

@jokerdino o.O hmmm... glad I asked then

@Serg all good too :)

@Serg haha I think that is a mean downvote, because they can hardly delete or edit it in that case...

Hello.

6:06 PM
'lo

@Zanna mean but fair, no ?

Sergie is a meanie. See, it even rhymes.
It's a fair downvote, yes.

Roses are red, violets are blue, this doesn't rhyme, but if answer is not for what OP asks , it deserves downvote or at least a comment

@Serg yeah I take your point... I guess I only downvote answers if I expect the poster to do something about it...

Usually the stressed syllable and all succeeding ones are used to construct a rhyme.
So "mergie" rhymes with "sergie" but generally "meanie" would not.

6:09 PM
American poetry usually doesn't rhyme

Well, that too :P

Sorry, this is post modern rhymy whimy stuff.

Fair enough. Carry on.

In before rhymy doesn't rhyme with whimy.

Also, speaking of American poetry, we have to remember the one and only, Robert Frost

6:10 PM
That is an oft misunderstood poem.

Should have brought Bear Grylls along.

haha that makes me think of Philip Larkin

For absolutely no rational reason whatsoever, I want to change my gravatar to a water bear.
2

Yep, "The Road Less Travelled" is often misunderstood as "taking difficult road", especially when they put it onto congratulations cards, but it actually means that both roads were equally similar

It's subliminal influence.

6:12 PM
Panda poop , how profound

why would the roads be similar? I thought it meant the road that fewer people went down

o.O
@Zanna Roads look similar I think.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back
He explicitly says in first line of each stanza that they're the same

oh I see, you were talking about the whole poem
but what does it mean, do you think?

Sometimes , when you write a script, it's easy to jump into it, and feel all genius and cocky, and then claim that this was innovation. But there's often similar solution, which doesn't need no script, and doesn't put more strain on a user. Sure, it does the same job and may be fun to write, but . . . the other way is just as good if not better
@Zanna it means , that you dont' have to complicate things in life sometimes
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

6:18 PM
damn, I really am hopeless at poetry...

@Zanna it was my worst subject too.
Don't feel bad about it :D

I used to love literature

Not all literature is poetry though.

In high school and fist few years of college, i wrote many essays and read many books. Amy Tan was my favorite author and i learned a lot from her

hmm I love literature, mostly only when I can get something from it haha

6:20 PM
@NathanOsman it's the same idea though. You want to tell a story, and the story always has some message in it
That's essentially same as using awk, or sed, or python to do text processing. Or writing a program. There's always functions, mains, subroutines. You choose different tools, but always with a purpose
You draw, you write, you pain, you write code - but all that is to some extend art ; all aims at some purpose, all has sets of tools to select, and all can be done gracefully or brutally or moderately

hey, @Zanna, what did you do before you got the Blue In The Face hat?

@IanC Hi Ian ! :) How was the discussion with the bankers ? Did it meet your expectations ? :)

And it's all about skills, about polishing the skills, about exercising your mind to recognize what needs to be done and how it needs to be done
Oh, Kaz is back . . . well time for derp
@KazWolfe how do you like my new avatar ? Luppy enough for you ?

@KazWolfe updoots to comments

Hey @cl-netbox! It was alright, asked all the questions, turns out the mortgage correction is a small (no inflation readjustment), I can pay anticipated and it will be debt directly from what I owe them, and reselling it before finish paying works a bit like I expected

The cd/dvd controller might be built into the motherboard though

@IanC I really do understand what you mean ... but nobody can help you with it ... you have to decide completely on your own ... :)
