Does anybody know how to rewrite urls in nginx?
need this:
> index.php?book=some article
To turn in to this
> /tutorials/some-artice

@ThomasWard might know.
If you ask nicely.

@Seth Me?

well I'm not going to ask nicely for you haha

@Seth Lol
> rewrite ^/index.php?book=$ $2/tutorials/$1 last;
This won't work ^

8:14 PM
@JacobVlijm that's an eggsceptional piece of code
I think I'm gonna go back and edit couple of old answers. As i progress, i learn more and more, and i think it would be beneficial for others to see more ways of how things can be done

Announcement: InSync accounts for free the next 6 days for GMail users: insynchq.com/free

Sadly, some of those answers aren't highly voted, but perhaps with a few improvements, they'll get an extra vote or two
@Videonauth what is insynq ?

@Serg google drive client for linux
normally costs money

ah . . .well, i don't use it anyway so . . .whatevs

@Seth Pay Homage to the Darkness, for thou hast summoned it!
what's up?

8:19 PM
@Serg thanks for the reggognition.

@ThomasWard can you please pin my message about insync client being free next 6 days

@JacobVlijm i think we started a new tend of puns in the chat. Such a great opporTUNAty

#sergpuns

@Serg that is forTUNAtely true!

DO-NUT resist the temptation, join in guys

8:25 PM

EGGcelent idea

EGGsactly what i thought

Common, I bEGG you...

8:36 PM
It's OK, these puns are totally lEGGal

Knock, knock.

@ThomasWard scroll up a little, @blade19899 was asking for help with nginx

can at least someone star the message about insynv being free for a few days ?? This one here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34269985#34269985

Did they ever get their apt repository fixed?

@NathanOsman who's there ?

8:40 PM
@Serg hue

@NathanOsman hue who ?

@NathanOsman dunno i installed it back as they went out of beta and it went without a hitch

@Serg hue who hue :P

same with updating, never had any problems so far

@NathanOsman hue who hue wat

8:41 PM
OK, my turn @NathanOsman knock knock

virtual facepalm

^

@Serg who is there?

@NathanOsman nevah

@edwinksl meme overload warning.
@Serg nevah who?

Rick Astley 2020, make Rick Roll great again

It's already great :D

@NathanOsman hue, lord of memes warning others about meme overload

And besides, the whole point is to disguise it.

8:45 PM
my playlist has that song
so i get rickrolled often

You rickroll yourself?

spotify does

Lol.

Now, I think @ByteCommander will appreciate this Rick Roll version: youtube.com/watch?v=7uXH5baOwcc
highly recommended btw ^

still dances better than rick astley

8:49 PM
I like how this version is more upbeat

@Seth F it. Going to bed. This was my last try:

oh wow that one punch man cover

> if ($query_string ~ "^book=([a-z]*)$"){ rewrite ^/index\.php$ /tutorials/%1? break; }

In case anybody is feeling Communistic today, check out this Chinese rock band , Tang Dynasty. youtube.com/watch?v=gE95GulBfNo

is it OK to offer pay services in a comment to a question?

A: Full disk problem on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus)

Adrien BeauYou have a lot of kernels installed, they take up a lot of space (300 MiB per kernel). You also have a good number of other packages that were installed as dependencies, and for various reasons, are not needed anymore. You can safely clean all that with the following command: sudo apt autoremov...

(last comments under the question, by user jarno

8:56 PM
@AdrienBeau nope , not really acceptable thing
@Seth modly attention is probably required there ^

wow, it gets better (after the OP scoffs at the idea): If you don't value (...) me using my time personally to help you that much, you don't want to make Ubuntu better, you are just needy.

@AdrienBeau flagged, and flagged his asking for money comment
thats in no way acceptable

@ThomasWard can i ask for a modly favor ? Comments under this answer are no longer relevant, plus edited my answer and it's accepted by OP, so can you use your powers to send those comments into dark realm ? askubuntu.com/a/862800/295286

@MarkYisri was just a friendly advice ;) - some don't know about the auto indexed spam...

@Serg The more i think of this, the more pissed i get seeing such a comment

9:08 PM
@Sethv you should

sethv rofl

I'm winning "Just here for the hat" hats in many communities, irony is I haven't been doing much for the hats lol

Ah theres the guy with that battlestar i got something to nuke from the orbit
@ThomasWard check this out and some ot the other comments from this guy :askubuntu.com/questions/863172/…

@Videonauth The things is, if you want to rewards someone in monetary form, handle it privately and outside of AU. That's acceptable thing. But when someone comes and says "gimme moneyz for my answer", now that's a wrong thing to do. All content here is under creative commons license , so it's not for profit
4

Thomas can you please nukeitfromorbit.com before i burst and do comments i might regret later
@Serg yes or do it like me i have a link to my amazon wishlist in my profile, but even I would never ask for someone to go there
and in fact since im here on the site i got one item from it, and it was more than a nice surprise
but i always will answer and help regardless

9:22 PM
@Videonauth exactly, amazon wishlist or paypal button would be acceptable. As long as it's a voluntary action , there's no problem

same thought here

heh maybe consider doing a patreon

phew they are gone, time to calm down

@Serg Thanks for the rickroll :)
You've seen the latest SUSE song? "Coding in the name of"

@ByteCommander yeah that one is cool

9:27 PM
@ByteCommander link ?

Lovely. I approve this message

@Zacharee1 now that's just rude . . .

lol

I already flagged it 15 minutes ago... my close votes are used up for day.

10:02 PM
Answer flagged as abusive and nuked from orbit, question protected.

@SmokeDetector is wearing a hat too?? :o

Yup. Itz the hat season
Tis a season to wear ha-aats, falalalala lalala deeerp

I guess I only got 4 so far

we can't lose to SU
else people like JMG will gloat

10:13 PM
I'm on #111
lol
I only have 2 hats here, my other 2 are on different websites

#18 with 5 hats

i am also accidentally #1 on another site lol

#6615 on StackOverflow, but that's not a surprise
#100 on UnixSE

why do you only have 4 here though

I think I've a chance on ChessSE, the second place has only 2 hats! :D
but I still have none there
@edwinksl I only have 2 here
the darth vader one, and this trophy

10:17 PM
2?
please fix, thanks
i expect to see 10

sir, yes sir!

very well then

let me see which one I can try to get here

where in the world is easy

what do you need to do on that one?

10:23 PM
i think you just need to visit the site?
that seems to be the case otherwise i don't know how i got that hat on 7 sites without doing anything special

user136984
Goodnight! :)

I'm tired of Canada being treated like a third world country...
YouTube Red is available in Korea and Mexico but not Canada.

I'm tired of America and American companies treating people as their own personal data mines.

So true, so true... we need more such people here on Ask Ubuntu:
user image
4

@edwinksl not sure why I didn't get it yet then, I'm constantly visiting here and UnixSE :p

10:29 PM
@NathanOsman YouTube Red?
Sounds like RedTube, just by Google...

why are you paying youtube money?! you're already giving them so much info. why also give them $10/mo?

@KazWolfe it's included with Google Play Music.

@ByteCommander truth

Except in Canada, that is.

10:31 PM
@NathanOsman any specific reason why it's unavailable in Canada ?

@NathanOsman why are you giving google money in addition to unprecedented access to everything you're doing online?

@ByteCommander so much...

I don't see no problem with buying products and/or services

@Serg no idea. We're always last to get new Google services.

does that answer needs flagging? http://askubuntu.com/questions/632285/what-process-is-responsible-for-media-keys-in-unity/863239#863239

Or is it "saveable" through editing?

10:32 PM
@KazWolfe because no ads?

@IanC what's wrong with it?

And offline video.

@NathanOsman github.com/gorhill/uBlock (GPL v3)
@NathanOsman github.com/rg3/youtube-dl (Public Domain license, respects your freedom)

I'm not really sure what the question is about, but it doesn't seem related to the question and lacks a bit explanation? @Zanna

@KazWolfe that one violates their ToS.
I have a VPN in the US but then I need a US account.

10:34 PM
@IanC added comment requesting edit, no need to flag for now

but as I said, I'm not sure about what the question is about, which is why I'm asking here before doing anything
@Serg cool! I'll skip it

but licensing.....
and the GPL revolution. LONG LIVE GNU
ALL HAIL THE EGOIST RMS

Oh please.
MIT is much better.

Seconded ^

but how else will you support the egotistical RMS?

10:35 PM
MIT is what I personally use

im personally using MIT or WTFPL

looks strangely at people arguing about licenses, shrugs and walks away...

@KazWolfe I don't care about RMS , quite frankly. I kind of care about the youtubers who put out videos every day , bringing me contents that I love, which is why I don't block no ads anymore. I've come to realize it's my favorite content creator's money,and byjeezus I do want to support them

(if you can't tell, i hate the guy)

I couldn't tell,but ok

10:37 PM
(hence the word "egotistical")

Alright, I'm gonna go smoke and then vacuum , I guess. Otherwise my father will freak out. Sigh . . . The "tough love" bullcrap is old.

no smoking

I think I'm gonna be like . . .the chillest dad ever . . .If I'm gonna ever become a dad . . . Probably gonna spoil my kids sooooo much . . . And of course teach them Linux and raspberry

@NathanOsman Do you know if there is any way I can get PyQt or PySide to be portable for Windows? Like, install one of them on a USB stick or something like that?

In theory yes.
I'm mobile so I'll have to look into this later.

10:40 PM
in practice , it sounds like PITA ^

@Serg and when you become a dad, quit smoking

@Edity maybe . . .

Hey, it can't be as bad as PyGTK.

@seth why not extract the deb file or wheel and then manually port it over?

@Serg yes definitely

10:42 PM
@Seth by the way, I asked earlier but forgot: is there limit to how many answers one can put out per day ?

I don't think there is a limit unless you start getting flags.
I've never come across one.

@NathanOsman oh ok. sorry to bother you. Don't worry about it :)

@Serg I think so, but it's a rare enough occurrence I do not remember any details.

meta.stackexchange.com/a/164900/295160 Aha, there is 3 minute timeout

10:44 PM
@Videonauth that's not portable.

@Seth not a bother. It's just too hard to do on a phone :D

@edwinksl lol chown/chmod makes another victim

what does chown/chmod do?

@IanC maybe you can deliver the bad news to OP

@edwinksl hahaha,
After a certain point it's just funny.

10:47 PM
puts hand on OP's shoulder "I've some bad news for you..."

@Seth evil mod spotted

Oct 31 at 22:10, by Byte Commander
No, doing chmod 777 is like drinking vodka. First it seems to solve your problem, but you'll soon wake up with a massive headache. @Zacharee1

is chown slightly better than chmod in this case
better as in easier to recover from

possibly. but both are pretty bad.

most things seem to be root:root from my 1-second cursory look

10:48 PM
^
I didn't go inside the folders
can we run find so we find any files that are not root:root?

@Seth lol i was typing when you posted your comment

yeah but i am lazy

@NathanOsman I imagine GoogleRed in Canada is subject to CRTC rulings which in turn is controlled by large corporations and lobby groups like the Canadian Music/TV Industry.

I'm not really a find pro, really should learn how to use it better

@edwinksl oh why am I laughing? I'm a terrible person...

10:50 PM
@KazWolfe have a upvote

let me ping the find abuser @Zanna
oh hi there

the test you want is -not -user

find -not -group root -not -user root /usr/lib @Zanna would that work?

@IanC try and see?

it worked with the path before the expressions

10:52 PM
find /usr/lib -not -user root -not -group root
you have to put the path first
the output is nothing - it's all root's

interesting

@Zanna I always forget that part lol.

so actually salvageable

@Zanna I've three files that have a group different from root though

i also have an empty output
$ find /usr/lib -not -group root
/usr/lib/evolution/camel-lock-helper-1.2
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesud
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/utempter/utempter
/usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

10:53 PM
/usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/utempter/utempter
/usr/lib/evolution/camel-lock-helper-1.2
owned by root
but groups are not root
run find /usr/lib -not -group root, see if you get anything

ah yeah

so not too bad actually

$ find /usr/lib -not -group root -ls
   797531     28 -rwxr-sr-x   1 root     mail        27176 Apr 25  2016 /usr/lib/emacs/24.5/x86_64-linux-gnu/movemail
   791614     12 -rwxr-sr-x   1 root     tty         10232 May  9  2016 /usr/lib/mc/cons.saver
   659381     44 -rwsr-xr--   1 root     messagebus    42992 Oct 12 13:29 /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
   921107     12 -rwxr-sr-x   1 root     utmp          10232 Mar 11  2016 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/utempter/utempter

@edwinksl Indeed

nice
at least not chmod -R...

10:56 PM
maybe the OP has a chance?

@Zanna You could write an answer out of that.
They're not going to have all the files you do, and likely vice versa, but you might get them going enough to recover their stuff.
(according to their latest comment they have unpushed code they're worried about)

@Zanna for the rescue! :)
I'll go for some more ice cream
almost took some big stormy rain in the street to buy it

oh you southern hemisphere people

hmm will they be able to sudo? I better test it out...

oh, he mentioned sudo was not working, can he chown the files to another user if he owns them though?

10:58 PM
I'm going to make a note of those owners so I can fix it haha
no

15k!

I'll do a complete test...

Protect mode enabled! :D

@Zanna you are breaking your system for science?

what better reason to break a system? @edwinksl :D

11:00 PM
good point

see you on the other side friends :D

good luck @Zanna! I'd use a VM.

ooh, new hat
now, to 20k!

now comes the worst part of eating 1L of ice cream, the regret

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I hate the CRTC.
If there was ever an organization that needs to die that's the one.
2
Though I don't really see what they have to do with Internet content.

11:15 PM
fixed :)
@Seth thanks :)

@IanC nooooooooooooooooooooo...
Lol. Autocorrect sure added a lot of O's.

@NathanOsman and I was telling my roommate that this ice cream was terribly sweet, so he says "and you are telling this after eating it all?" and I'm like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yay, 200 points today again, finally.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Thanks for the sed/tail benchmark question, that answer is nicely paying out.

@ByteCommander gratz. I'm still on 76

11:34 PM
hmmm, found a few doable old questions. Sadly OP isn't likely to come back, but it'll be fun to work on these AND maybe will bring me closer to a silver tag

rescue answer posted :D
hope OP hasn't already reinstalled :S

i see there are many chown -R /usr/lib questions

hmmm maybe we should have duped it instead

sudo doesn't work right?
hence the need to go to recovery mode

yeah no sudo

11:43 PM
so your answer stands out in that regard

chroot didn't work either

many answers just use sudo chown -R root:root without checking

Apport is actually useful sometimes - helps me find bugs in my own indicators

I got the same error in chroot, so I'm not sure recovery would have worked
I'm unable to test in recovery mode, as my keyboard does not work in recovery mode...
which makes things tricky...

we could dupe other questions to this one

11:45 PM
I don't agree with the accepted answer to this one...
I don't want people to see "just reinstall"
because I would probably never recommend that with chown

Um... how would I handle a question-in-link? (cc @StefanoPalazzo)
or any other mod/respected editor online?

o_O
I guess just edit it in..?

pretty much the whole system is owned by root... unless you are lazy or have nothing you care about, there's no need to reinstall as there are not that many things to chown after running chown root: /the/whole/shebang
@KazWolfe just VTC as too broad

holy moly that wall of text

there's a list of questions at the end

11:50 PM
yup, tl;dr
btw, dkms is roasting my cpu while installing the kernel updates... :-/

oh it's bedtime
that was a nice little bit of excitement :)
later all

but there is a nice scripting question
you sure you want to miss it?

@ByteCommander You're most welcome... Should thank @Zanna for not getting it right in the first place (poor girl had a lousy day yesterday what with being banned and all). I'm surprised myself how much traction that question got... 1,000 views in 24 hours.

see you later, good night @Zanna!

\o/ I'm on #3 with 9 hats
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it has been in the HNQ for a while

11:55 PM
@edwinksl oh really??
@IanC goodnight :)

oh well, I guess I'll just call it a day now too. good night

@NathanOsman I couldn't agree with your more about the CRTC... They think they are the glue that holds Canada together and empower themselves in all areas of thought control, the economy and to a certain extend the job markets.
@ByteCommander I have 9 hats too... what's the HNQ?
@Zanna sweet dreams :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix thanks :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hot network questions. That list of questions you see in the right side bar of every SE page.

@edwinksl did I miss it?

11:59 PM
shutdown

shutdown why? is NSA coming?
