A: How can VLC be made to stretch a video such that it fills a display?

jade152GOM player gives you the full screen stretched at the press of a button or control and enter very simple and never any loss of picture

borderline spam imo

@edwinksl mission accomplished! (Just got the where in the world hat here, not sure how though..)

12:27 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix wait what? Banned?

@Zacharee1 she appealed to Seth and he unbanned her.
The ban was only on voting... not on being a user to the site.
It was based on failed audits, which I didn't know could happen
The software does it automatically if you fail to often or too quickly.

my office has terrible nerf guns ;-;

@KazWolfe i have a nerf sniper rifle at my desk at work lol

is it permissible to farm amped up hat here

@KazWolfe I finally got windows 8.1 setup working with rufus on BIOS. UEFI kept making error that it couldnt partition the disks

12:37 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix If it makes @Zanna feel any better, I once got review banned. Twice. In a day.

@edwinksl yes
@Windows3.1 don't care
@ThomasWard ooh, lucky. nobody here has a good grip either. It's sorta funny.

@KazWolfe ooo that's not very nice!
@KazWolfe what seems to be the problem?

@KazWolfe I have fun with mine, I fire over the cubes and it drops onto people's heads xD

@ThomasWard please tell me you at least have good trigger discipline.
i want to actually get a collection of good modded nerf gear and bring it in one day.

@KazWolfe define trigger discipline. We have weekly nerf fights. And I usually win xD

12:44 AM
@ThomasWard not having your finger on the trigger literally every second.

@KazWolfe I couldn't if I wanted to - the nerf sniper rifle is bolt-action
gotta reload XD

@ThomasWard still, don't go prancing around with your finger on the trigger :D

@KazWolfe don't have to. My cube's near the server room, I just go hide in there, only seven people including me have a code to that room xD
when the wars break out I hide until the last guy is left
then I go around evilly >:D

cheap.

12:47 AM
but it works! >:D
I did the same thing on call of duty 4 servers, except with a knife and a pistol xD

yeah. i'm going to go buy and mod some nerf equipment and swing by your office one day :D

@edwinksl you should check Discord

rofl
report mod abuse

1 hour later…
1:53 AM
god, i hate humans

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no it was on reviewing.
so many issues with chromium 55

@Serg this is why wolves are awesome

2:09 AM
@KazWolfe they sure are. At least they can be happy. Some humans are never happy with anything

can i just get species reassignment surgery?

@KazWolfe no...the Universal Alien Co-op will not approve of it.

@TheXed they can go shove it

@KazWolfe that they will...right up your....nevermind...

2:23 AM
@Serg Stop hating yourself... you'll be better some day!

@TheXed i mean...

@Seth Sorry Seth I use voting and reviewing synomonously :(

So apparently I have a new UPS driver (probably temp for the holidays) but she is like legit hot...but she didn't walk down the sidewalk, so all i can see is from her shoulders down...

...waits for punch line

Thats it...

2:26 AM
... here I thought your three-some was morphing into a four-some... I feel gipted :D

wait, what three-some?

Oh that was Fabby...sorry case of mistaken fake-dentities
Speaking of Fabby was he the in-house nVidia guru or was that you @TheXed

What have I walked in on...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no he was in the house...and @Serg negotiated a cease fire between us.

lol @NathanOsman run!... run quickly!!! SAVE YOUR INNOCENCE

2:29 AM
@NathanOsman do you really want to know?

@TheXed nnnnnnope.

and this is why i don't like [redacted]. they don't know how to live.\

He wants to know when Raspberry Pi4 will be released and if 2 or 4 GB of RAM and what Mhz CPU speed and what GPU and will it be USB 3.1 and... and...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix RPI4 will be released in 2020, and will feature 512 MB of RAM, 486Mhz, no GPU and USB 1, and will cost $350.00
(inflation)

@TheXed You are the ghost of Christmas past and thinking in 1970 terms... throw away that Radio Shack TRS80 Lisa and come back to us!
ooh my lots of anarchonism in my history :(

2:36 AM
Well I don't want to be the one to say "I told you so" but remember this conversation 3 years from now.

@TheXed the only inflation you should be worried about is the cost of ice-melt in Illinois and perhaps snow shovels if your plastic one breaks.

Ice-melt is untouchable right now...I didn't even buy any this year....and I just replaced my shovel

Just for kicks...here is a picture of me being hit in the back with a snow ball...

1 hour later…
3:49 AM
@Serg I just want to say one thing:

Doesn't look like he's going to take the "BAIT"
Guess you loose "HOOK, LINE and SINKER"

well you just "sunk" my hopes...

maybe you can "FLOAT" a different joke

I will "go fish" again...

Too bad when you "go fish" you aren't "holding all the cards"

3:59 AM
as long as I don't get "hooked"

When "hooks" are involved you don't want to be the "early fish that gets the worm"

Better then being a "fish" in the "frying pan"

Watch out for the "net" that takes you out of the "comfortable frying pan" and drops you into the "fire".

This "line" has gone too deep...

The "catch of the day" has gone bad it seems.

4:08 AM
Lets not "dredge" it back up if we can...we don't want to be "sleeping with the fishes"

That's a "line" I can't dispute.

Okay in all seriousness...
How do you eradicate high school drama when your school board behaves in such a manor:

I'm not good with negotiating with bosses... I just go find greener pastures or they fire me if they feel I'm too smart.

Oh I don't have to negotiate with them...I am just curious...

Curiosity killed the "catfish" :D

4:18 AM
that was a "stinger"

A "ray" of light in an otherwise dark room.

I am running out of bad puns...

Always throw the "puny fish" back into the water to catch them when they grow bigger.

the "sharks" have to eat too...

Your lack of puns have been saved from the "jaws" of defeat.

4:29 AM
You bit the "tail off that one"

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in answer: looking for a screen recorder for ubuntu 16.04 by user633570 on askubuntu.com

I'm not so "gillable" after all.

eventually this is going to "blow(fish)" up...

Well that would be "fin" with me.

but then again we could be "clown(fish)ing" around...

4:32 AM
You can always "spawn" some new puns

that would require me to go back to "school"

You work at one anyways... maybe you can "scale" the ladder

But we don't need to be "farming" new jokes...

fish farms make some people "Ill" don't you "inois"?
sorry for "stating" that :p

better then your "frozen fish" up north....

@NathanOsman That's awesome!

@Serg is going to think this thread is very "fishy"

hmm, I need to roll back a LP upload for 1 distribution. I have the .deb file and the .changes file for the version I need to go back to (from LP) but no tarballs. Any way I can do this?

5:18 AM
You mean upload a package with a smaller version number?

@NathanOsman well it would end with that, yes.
I copied a package to trusty that wasn't compatible. I was hoping there was an easy way to reverse that (since the copied package replaced the existing package).
I guess I'll just have to rebuild it to be compatible though.

Because you can't do that. It is completely 100% impossible to upload a package with a smaller version number.
Launchpad keeps track of the numbers internally and immediately rejects smaller numbers.
Trust me, this has been a source of much consternation.

sigh. I was hoping to avoid using quilt again.. oh well.
btw, nice hat.
@NathanOsman so, if I rebuild the source package with patches for trusty, how can I ensure it uploads for trusty and not yakkety (which I'm running)?
Do I just need to change the last entry of the changelog to target trusty?
hey, check it out @NathanOsman larry-price.com/blog/2016/07/07/…

@MuditKapil you're welcome.

It seems to me that OP wants someone to tell them that they should be putting the FQDN in the /etc/hostname file. Then just do it! askubuntu.com/questions/863132/…

Why doesn't he try both methods and answer his own question?

That's exactly what I am wondering too. =)

Plus he never linked any sources he just said he read it on the internet somewhere.

Yep
I think I might have found some things that he specified, but I am not sure. Nor was what I found definitive as being a correct answer either.

I kind of guessed who it was
but let's assume it was two separate people just passing by...
VTC or remove version? askubuntu.com/questions/863386/…
I think we should close it

@Zanna meh, its fine

what do you mean fine? why fine?

because
idk but i cant remove it anymore
but..
why do you think I should remove it?

the installation isn't totally screwed
it can be fixed without too much effort

because I don't agree with "you have to reinstall" and people are going to see that first when reading the question - if they have done the same thing they might jump in and start reinstalling without need. You can remove it, click the little x button. But, it is completely up to you, if you think your comment should stay there, that is your choice

8:50 AM
probably should be edited and "mint" removed

@ByteCommander I think YMMV with mint... I had some unexpected things happen fixing my dad's mint system...

shrug
I never had Mint anywhere.
But I think it would react similarly to a missing ~ folder as vanilla Ubuntu.

hmm I could test their problem and see if I can fix it hahahaha
gonna get shower now anyways...

I've TWRPed up my phone!

@Zacharee1 nice ! :D Hi

hi
Installing a debloated Stock now!
so nervewracking

@Zacharee1 I have a Kobo Arc tablet but I'm afraid to touch it ! I've broken 2 tablets in the past

lol

@Zacharee1 happy days

12:04 PM
This boot is taking a while...
I hate the "YOUR BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED THE WORLD WILL NOW END!!!" message
and it's up!

@Zacharee1 is that message serious
what phone?

@MarkYisri I may have exaggerated a teensy bit
so I'm pretty sure the "second screen" on my phone is just a weird extension of the main panel
because CM14.1 and AROMA installers stretch onto it

@Zacharee1 does your phone have hardware buttons?

no
well vol and power

okay

12:21 PM
Now I just need to figure out why LG Backup isn't showing up
Anyone else get annoyed by the default Android click sound effects?

@Videonauth oh noes
it's a cartoon and it's causing me anxiety
but in other news, LG Backup is finally working

"Ford Mortgage" -- could it be spam? Who knows???
:p

Hmm fkraiem considering downvoting me... SNAFU

wat

1:39 PM
@Zanna on what, did he tell a reason too?

I am tempted to -1; just because it works for one person does not make it okay. You have no idea how much OP's system differs from yours. — fkraiem 14 mins ago
@Videonauth didn't actually downvote, yet :)

@fkraiem it's still a valid answer. It's not only for OP. If it works for OP, that's great; they got what they needed. If it doesn't, it still might work for someone else who visits this page. Besides, at this point, with the only other option being a reinstall, what's the harm in trying? — Zacharee1 9 secs ago

Thanks :D

ah that controversion thing, yes it is hard to find an answer which fits all the possible cases but on the other sdide youre normaly writing an answer to an OPs exact question and for him it seemed to work i guess

Later folks xxx

1:51 PM
In a directory there are nine hundred files , i need to copy 150 files , i have the name of all 150 files , what is the good tool in Linux

The name of 150 files are in text file saved as list.txt .. plz help
Any idea ?

2:02 PM
@user143252 you could do a for loop in bash to do that i think, guess @zanna could help you out with that
but this question has been asked before therefore should be an answer on that topic on Au or in worst case on UL

@Videonauth No, never a for loop. Always while. But user143252 already posted a question on U&L and got an answer.

well im not really fit today somehow

@Videonauth Don't worry, that's a very common mistake. We all think for loops at first. This is known as bash pitfall number 1:

yeah especially i not dabbled much in bash since my starting days, i have if already made a bash script for the tasks i need or im actually doing it in python :)
and there i would read the file into a list and then for each in list
and then all subprocess mv

now to get Google Assistant

2:45 PM
hi guys, some one here knows Python well?
i just need to read the arguments passed to the scripts
there is some recommended way to accomplish this?

@TheXed @WinEunuuchs2Unix OMG, i was reading the transcript and you guys . . . blew it out of the water, wow. Good job

@terdon haha I haven't really graduated to while yet, but if a list of something needs to be read, I will at least think, no, no, put the for down...

:)

@Benny you can do that sys.argv , import sys first and then use sys.argv[1] , sys.argv[2] and so on

@Benny use argparse for that docs.python.org/3/howto/argparse.html

2:49 PM
It's always: while read var; do something to "$var"; done < file

i see ArgumentParser

@ByteCommander i've heard of devilspie but never used it

Or, to be 100% safe:

@Benny what exactly do you want to do ?

while IFS= read -r var; do something to "$var"; done < file

2:50 PM
here is my mission
I need a command line tool/script that can backup a list of partitions from Android to pc (using adb connection).
And restore them.

Args:
bkp_tool -b <partition-list> <directory on pc>
bkp_tool -r <directory on pc>

Example:
bkp_tool boot,recovery,cache,nvdata ./backup/

This will backup partitions:
boot
recovery
cache
nvdata

into ./backup/boot.img, ./backup/recovery.img ... etc..

from /dev/block/????

@terdon @Zanna what are you guys trying to do, read text line by line ?

@Serg Yes. I'm pointing out that for var in $(cat file) is BAD®

@terdon agreed, not a good practice and tedious

i found this docs.python.org/3.3/library/argparse.html i think this is exactly what i need

@Benny see my link and make sure you read the documentation ofor your python version

2:52 PM
I just stuck my head in, not trying to do anything except have fun and maybe get some tips, as per usual

@Benny OK, and you're trying to write that bkp_tool yourself right ? Yeah, you can use argsparse API for switches. I've never used lists with optins,but i think you can convert string to list by split(",") function

Thanks ! :)

@Zanna Even if you haven't graduated to while yet , start looking at it ;) It's a very frequent technique used in bash scripting, and there's whole lotta things you can do with it.
I told OP to put error into pastebin. He pasted it into comments /facepalm
3

@Serg for sure, I am always trying stuff :)

Also, who chose the font for StackExchange ? This is not the first time OP confuses letter l with number 1 on my answers

3:31 PM
@Benny If you think this may not be the last time you need to parse command line arguments, do yourself a favour and check this out: docopt.org

3:53 PM
@terdon that simple UTF escape question turned out to be not so simple, eh ?

4:04 PM
@Serg Not really, why? Just a simple sed call

@terdon tnanks for answering my question , work done :)

@terdon where's this?

Oh beware @Zanna the sed abuser is lurking :D
kidding

@terdon yeah , I also thought it was simple .replace() call , but OP keeps having issues

@Serg we lived up to your expectations?

4:26 PM
@TheXed yes, you guys did magnificent job. #Proud

lol great
So Christmas break has started off with a bang...hasn't even been 24 hours yet and I got a call that power was out at one of our buildings so I need to "come in and turn the server back on"

which wouldn't be a big deal but it so happens to be the building furthest from my house...
~30 miles...

@Serg I think that's the OP's problem though, not your answer's

probably

Q: How can i delete from a text file these special characters

Insanebench420I have a file with special characters that were created during copying from terminal. Now I would like to remove them. I tried grep and sed but didn't work maybe I'm doing it wrong. Special character is an ESC inside a black box, can't copy it but if I do, it turns into a box with numbers insid...

@Videonauth haha I love it

@TheXed Ain't that fun, huh ? Well, at least it's not during the semester. When we had power outtage , a lot of students got pissed, because printing servers went down, firewall went down , internet went down,so everything went down

So I am like isn't there anyone there that can press the power button on the server?
"Oh no we can't do that without you being here, what if something goes bad"

@terdon Ahh nice :)

So I am like, press the power button, if something goes bad let me know, then I know I am driving up there for more then just pressing the power button.

4:33 PM
Yeah, nobody wants to be blamed for things. Let it burn, just don't get blamed by bosses

@Zanna since youre one of my few followers on twitter, please let meknow if the amount of retweets and twees becomes bothering ok?

@Videonauth you are on twitter?

@TheXed yes I am

@Serg yay!

@Serg anyways waiting on the power so I can drive up there and press a power button.
@Videonauth what is your username?

4:35 PM
@TheXed you just typed it to ping me :p

@Videonauth I don't believe is making assumptions...

and its in my profile as well :) well on twitter its alle lower case letters

I got it.
aright gotta move to the next project cya later

I have twitter too, but i never go there
Cya

@TheXed well can you gove me a hint who you are of those folowed me this week ?
nvm got it figured :)

4:42 PM
@Videonauth I will if I notice, which is highly unlikely as I follow about 600 folks iirc and the feed changes every few seconds... I used to be active, not these days :(

well thats enough for me, just retweetet the past weeks alot i thought usefull and/or funny
