5:00 AM
@edwinksl I did

130 mbps... maybe I got carried away with quality for this video...

@Zacharee1 help me do my 20

morning :)
askubuntu.com/q/836346/61218 what does it mean? Why can't they give official link?
DV came from this room?

yes
because it's obviously a spam

5:15 AM
I think they mean the link given in the video is wrong

I was thinking same as Serg

First of all, why dropbox ? second , youtube video is probably for their ad revenue

dropbox was added later. It was tiny.cc first

I see your comments...
It looks like a question :\

Yes. it was a question

5:18 AM
44 GB of PNG images has become roughly 3 GB of h264 video.
And even with gigabit ethernet, this is slow.

hello guys

@Aamir hello.

@NathanOsman So... why not use Pied Piper compression?

how can I get physical address of my machine through terminal

@Aamir ifconfig will show MAC addresses.
@KazWolfe Is that where all of the 1s and 0s are compressed down to only 0s?
(Think about it...)

5:20 AM
@NathanOsman no. but the UX is amazing. check it:

I'm going to upload 40 GB of images to that?

@NathanOsman, is it possible to get in this format b8:ca:3a:9e:18:3a directly

@NathanOsman yeah, just set everything to the needed params. it'll go down to 1 GB.

@Aamir Do you know the name of the interface you want?
@KazWolfe No thanks. My Internet isn't fast enough to be able to upload that much in a reasonable number of days.

@NathanOsman the compression is done client-side, and then transmitted to the server.
source: i have a degree in bullshit-techology.

5:23 AM
How... does that work?

your effective upload will only be 80MB or so.
It's like running zip locally.

Won't that kill the quality?
Yay, encode finished! \o/

@NathanOsman Pied Piper's algo is lossless

@KazWolfe You really think there's that much redundancy in 40 GB of PNG images?

@NathanOsman Middle-Out thinks so.
wait, serious question. how serious do you think I'm being?

5:24 AM
Lol. Bash complete takes 5 seconds in this directory there are so many files.
@KazWolfe Serious answer: serious.

@NathanOsman piedpiper.com

looks like nathan is out of the loop :p

very

What am I missing... ?
<--- that awkward feeling when people are talking around you

@NathanOsman look at the site footer.

5:28 AM
Ah.
Stupid me.
I iz gullible.

it's all from a TV show.

I see that.

@KazWolfe looks like we are the only two who watch that

that's sad
(though i'm sure the show is actually sorta close... they put a lot of care into making the math and things real)
hell, they had an episode with C code that was perfectly valid.
and actually... fastcompany.com/3050180/tech-forecast/… (@edwinksl)
Protip web developers: If you do some sort of response to make sure I watch an ad, don't make it echo some nonce.
Because I can just pull that nonce and send all the ad-watch requests I want.

5:52 AM
guys, is there an escape code for the line number in sed?
like, if I want to include the line number in a particular place in the substitution

the line number is... the number

s/^Line\ /Line {line number}/
something like this

oh I see... good question

I found the = command prints the line number under the line, maybe I can use it somehow?
I'm kind of new with sed, was just reading the manual today :p

I'm embarrassed I don't know... thinking about it

6:01 AM
In about half an hour, I'll have a video from earlier today to show you all.

@Zanna can you include another command inside the replacement on s/REGEX/REPLACEMENT/?
@NathanOsman posting on your youtube account?

Yup!

yay, giant dog is passed out on bed.
i get to sleep on the floor!

@IanC you can do a lot of things...
I'm going to get breakfast and figure it out when I get back hehe

alright! I might be off to sleep, but just ping me if you think of something! :)

6:24 AM
@Zanna, I found a nice hack to do this sed substitution, it's really cool! You use sed to actually write a sed script, and then use it to make the substitution stackoverflow.com/a/12497890/6676042
I couldn't figure some of the other answers, but I'll try later
in the end it looks something like this:
sed -n /PATTERN/= file | sed 's/.*/&s\/PATTERN\/Line &\//' | sed -f - file
you will have a script with:
1s/PATTERN/Line 1/
2s/PATTERN/Line 2/
...
well, time to sleep, good night!

yeah, I was hoping to find a simpler way... goodnight :)
thanks for the stimulating question @IanC

@KazWolfe btw, since you put my answer into yours for the sake of completeness (I assume) I just wanna mention that it is totally possible to delete a file that belongs to root in a directory where you as a normal user have write access

@Zanna oh, yeah, that's right... It's the parent directory, isn't it?

yeah
my answer is not going anywhere... maybe you could refer to it more generally like "set restrictive permissions as in Zanna's answer" and not do the whole thing... but shrug

@Zanna the answer structure was more meant to introduce concepts, and then link them together into one for encryption

it's your answer, I already upvoted it, do whatever you think is best :)

yeah, it needs some reworking but i'm lazy
though i won't be sleeping tonight.

6:48 AM
why not?

dog is passed out in my bed.

A bugle call ought to fix that.

@NathanOsman sedatives.

Fine. A bullhorn then.

@NathanOsman human sedatives.

6:50 AM
Fine, a ramjet engine then.

not sure how i'd get one in...

150 dB, but who's counting...

either way, as to why i can't just move the dog...
she's one of these:

@KazWolfe Simple attach it to a rocket.

6:52 AM

yes, these dogs are giant.
and they are not easy to move.

@user2582546 What and why.

Delivered in glorious 1440p for your enjoyment.

7:00 AM
@NathanOsman 2/10 not enough drone crashes

@KazWolfe I actually have one on film, but I'm reluctant to share it.

@NathanOsman PII?
(Also, my god that's stable footage. I can't get anything close to that on my drone, but then again... engineering platform)

@KazWolfe PIII.
It has a gimbal, so of course it is stable :D

@NathanOsman Personally Identifiable Information ???

Ooooooh. My bad. I took the PII to mean "Phantom 2".
Nope, no personal information in the video. Just embarrassment since I'm the one who crashed it.

7:03 AM
remind me to share with you some footage of what we did.

I don't like to watch these things. It is too hard on my nerves.

including a propeller flying off at full speed because it wasn't mounted properly, and crashing no more than a yard from a car.

@KazWolfe Yup, that's why I always make sure the props are on very tight.

@NathanOsman yeah well, the aero engineers in our group forgot that.
and his car almost paid the price.

Lol, I wonder how the insurance claim would have sounded...
"Hit by falling aircraft."

7:05 AM
and provided this drone is built to generate about 3 lbs of thrust...
that prop flew
then there was the time one of the EEs decided to put the gyrometer on the bottom side of the drone because there was space.

Oh fun.

then the time i flashed the wrong firmware
And the time we decided to try auto-takeoff, but nobody expected the drone to shoot up 30m.
Where it drifted into a tree.

Auto-takeoff on mine just hovers it to 1m from the ground.

And the time we used a bad motor, causing the battery to short out.
fried every electronic on board.
then the time someone decided it would be a good idea to kill another drone in the fleet, using our telemetry channel.

I want to go to your school :D

7:12 AM
then the time someone decided to select the wrong mode on our controller, reversing the throttle.
imagine arming the drone inside, and having it immediately shoot to full-throttle into the ceiling.
that person is still not allowed to touch the controllers.

Lol.

tl;dr engineering club has lots of horrors

hello

Hi

morning @Arronical :)

@SmokeDetector I remember days when spam was about... wait, I don't remember what about was that spam, but surely not about nootropics

@Zanna o/
That was one of my favourite spam titles yet, 'to be traditional and strong; that you would'

8:45 AM
hahaha
that you would

It's like we came in part way through the conversation... intriguing!

expression of agreement in my dialect
"I need to get some breakfast" "that you do, love!"

I read it that way too. I'd imagined someone previously saying 'To improve my attractiveness I think I need to start taking a dietary supplement, maybe ground unicorn horn'

that you do!
hahaha

My Brian does immediately lean to the bizarre, sometimes I think I should be concerned.

9:18 AM
I think you should be proud

Haha, cheers!

;)

10:05 AM
@Arronical Brian?

I do talk about my brain as a third party, he's called Brian. Again, slightly worrying.

yeah, just a little.

@Arronical that way you can never make a typo...

Yeah

that one is maybe not offtopic. bash can be asked on AU.

Q: How is it that an Ubuntu Server has graphical.target as default systemd target?

Rémi B.I'm an Ubuntu user for a while and at work we have many VM Ubuntu servers and all of them run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to deploy our web applications, databases and other tools. I'm currently studying Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, desktop and server, to be able to upgrade our production servers in a near future wit...

The joke was on me!

@terdon it's usually the other way around

Yup. That's 100% on topic on U&L also, I just felt it was a better fit for AU. And I posted it here so that someone can actually answer :)
I'm guessing that the server is still booting to init 5, hence "graphical", even though there's no GUI. Either that or 'graphical.target' is pointing to whichever is the default runlevel (be it 3 or 5)
But I don't know

@terdon I don't know much about that stuff anyways :(

user136984
2:04 PM
@Fabby I didn't say "tracer", I said "tracker". :)

user136984
I hope I did anyway as that's the one I meant... :D

Almost to 1.5k :)

user136984
2:21 PM
16.10 doesn't have many new updates, but it does have one which is rather important to me (although I haven't installed it yet and I am still on 16.04.1) and that is it finally allows one to view the changelogs of packages coming from PPAs!

user136984
And I am actually thinking about switching (or at least having a look at) from the Numix GTK+ Theme to the Arc GTK+ Theme! :)

user136984
Which should now be installed by default as an alternative option to the default.

Is this one of those cat homework questions again askubuntu.com/questions/836533/…? What do we do with those?

user136984
Or at least that is the case in GNOME, I think it's possible that in the normal/other flavours you will have to install it from the repositories, but at least it will be there and you won't have to install some OpenSUSE one! :D

@Arronical CLose them as dupes of each other or as "unclear what you're asking" or as "go back to whoever teaches your course and tell them they're idiots"
Oh, no, hang on
I thought it was another of the "use cat to number paragraphs" questions.

2:28 PM
@Arronical grep is not allowed? the question seems pretty useless to me

Cat is pointless here.

It looks like there are helpful comments to guide the OP there now. Thanks for the guidance.

@Arronical yeah, I didn't want to give him a copy-paste answer

this. and it could be graphical.target is inactive
OR he believes he is using a server but it was a DE install where the DE was deleted

user136984
What is happening with 16.10? When will the announcement be made about its official release and when will one be able to upgrade to it and download it?

cant you speak indonesian — NORRIS RAHMAN 58 secs ago

user136984
I'd got the idea that it has already been released, but it doesn't say that everywhere, just a few places.

@ParanoidPanda maybe wait for email from ubuntu-announce?
@Anwar yeah OP seems mad or something

user136984
@edwinksl: It seems that not all ISOs are ready.

@edwinksl idk. btw, someone vtced that as OT
It was OT because ?

OP appears to be using elementary?
or am i misreading what OP wrote

2:47 PM
@edwinksl yeah I was wondering about that

I'm not sure about that too!
From the apt-get update output I assume they have some elementary PPAs

user136984
This is the first bug on LaunchPad, it was opened by Mark Shuttleworth, and it's what got Ubuntu going!: Microsoft has a majority market share :D

@Anwar either way, that sources.list/sources.list.d is an absolute mess

agree

hiya folks
quick question

2:50 PM
Is there a changelog for 16.10

there is a release notes for 16.10 but until it's officially released it's not 'fixed' (slightly fluid)

what's the best way to deactivate password for user without reconfiguring sshd?
I want to use a key I've just setup

@Anwar He's not even using Ubuntu. . .

@terdon he said he's on 16.04!

passwd -l <username>

2:56 PM
@terdon I think he was lying gist.github.com/Anachron/2f7f3d81e3b98695433a :(
The format of Ubuntu's sources.list doesn't match with that one.

askubuntu.com/users/320386/arronical iam using elementary OS kernel ubuntu 16.04 — NORRIS RAHMAN 17 mins ago

I misread that one. Thought he was referring to some elementary os kernel (didn't think much). Though he claimed to be using 16.04 in a comment below the answer

yay i finally got up off my butt and updated NGINX PPAs >.>

user136984
I think that one of the reasons that 16.10 hasn't been officially released yet is that not all (most, but not all) of the ISOs have had all the testing they require. So please all of you, get testing! ;)

@ParanoidPanda Can I slap you with something official?

user136984
Never mind, it's just been released!!! :D

finally we can stop closing 16.10 questions

user136984
@ThomasWard @edwinksl: Yes, I just got that, I think I posted my message just a few seconds before it got released officially or at least before the email was sent out! :D

@cl-netbox Never rely on that until the official release annoucements go out heh. (This is because emergency respins and such sometimes happen). It's out now though

What are changes ?

@Anwar read the release notes
the full changelog is waaaaay too huge

3:24 PM
@terdon from redhat " For example, the graphical.target unit, which is used to start a graphical session, starts system services such as the GNOME Display Manager (gdm.service) or Accounts Service (accounts-daemon.service) and also activates the multi-user.target unit. Similarly, the multi-user.target unit starts other essential system services such as NetworkManager (NetworkManager.service) or D-Bus (dbus.service) and activates another target unit named basic.target. "

So it looks like server has disabled the GUI stuff but is still pointing to graphical just so it can easily call multi-user, right?

yes think so
@terdon there made an answer. But not 100% sure about it D:
Ill check the downvotes when I get home :DD

Cool
