12:16 AM
snore snore urrgh...it's my iPad. Oh I'm awake.

why does amtrak have an onboard server with gps capability?
and more importantly, why is it running PHP?

@KazWolfe I hope driver doesn't follow buggy GPS and all of a sudden turn left off the tracks!
Haha j/k no steering wheel on trains... for obvious reasons.

their navigation code can still be in php
if that's the case....

12:32 AM
Ooooh, navigation

@KazWolfe they sure are awesome and especially in python, since there is API for almost anything

@Serg except getting amtrak data.
you need BS4 for that stuff
also, depressing fact of the day: l33t programming skills do not get the attention of the cute girl a couple seats over.

@KazWolfe well if you high-jack her android or mac, it might get her attention

@Serg not in the way i want.
though the train wifi is pretty damn insecure.

Hey girl , are you computer virus ? Because my screen gets all blue for you

12:38 AM
i'd probably be doing everyone a favor by ARPing the network and then tunneling to my VPN.

#cheesy_serg

@Serg but... linux.

@KazWolfe Hey girl , are you a bug ? Because you make my kernel panic

@KazWolfe You could try what I did today and smile at her :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix remind me to send you a picture of me force-smiling.
@Serg there is cheesy, and then there is serg.

12:40 AM
@KazWolfe Well I actually smiled back. blush

@KazWolfe thank you, I'm trying my best here

@WinEunuuchs2Unix ah, see... that doesn't happen with Kaz here.

I think geeks like us are probably 90% shy for the most part.

Probably.

Hi @Nathan I thought you were married anyway :p\

12:42 AM
For the most part . . . What really helped me is my Chinese. At one point I decided to go out and practice my Chinese with people I meet on light rail and on my university campus
That's how i met three of my best friends

@Serg yeah, what is with your chinese speaking?
i mean, you are american, no?

@KazWolfe I am Ukrainian who immigrated to the US. Learning chinese is just a hobby. I was always interested in asian culture, and originally wanted to learn japanese , but chance had it that i got into mandarin chinese

but why such a heavy focus on it? i mean, that's really beyond what most people call a hobby.

@Serg You are lucky to have one best friends. With three you are 3 times blessed!

sysadmin here. what are these "friends" you speak of?

12:45 AM
@Serg -- Yat, Yee, Sam, Say... Chinese for 1,2,3,4... I learned that taking Kung Fu for 1 month you should forsake your gym membership and take that instead.

@KazWolfe Honestly, I don't know. I guess I have passion for language learning. Plus in my mind Chinese is probably is linked to finding friends and other interesting achievements. My first love was Chinese, so there's that,too
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's cantonese chinese. I still want to learn that, because my best friends are cantonese speakers. But what I usually use is Mandarin Chinese.

look at serg here! Mr. Had Romance!

What it was Catonese???? I thought I was paying for high-price Mandarin Kung Fu, I should have negotiated $40 down to $35 :p

@KazWolfe yup . . . and was hard heart broken after that, but it was beautiful experience

yeah well i wouldn't know.
$salt

12:49 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well, I don't think it's worse in quality

@Serg No worries, after you graduate EE Xi Ping will personally offer you a high paying job in Bejing / Peking.

Bruce Lee was cantonese speaker by the way
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I hope that happens :)

@Serg bad example he died of a heart attack and his son died from a fake bullet.

@Serg but then you get all of your traffic blocked
and i don't think you'll be able to visit AU anymore :(

@KazWolfe AU blocks internet from China?

12:51 AM
i think china may block access to AU.

@KazWolfe le me is Unix user and I can haz onionz and torz

@Serg Also in real life my last name is "Lee" and it's not "Unix" like my sign on name claims it is.

@Serg i think tor is blocked?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix wait your last name isn't unix? mind fracking blown into millions of tiny pieces

@KazWolfe I'm sure China doesn't block access to AU, plus Ubuntu wrote a special version for China alled Kylinux or something like that.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix china blocks google

12:52 AM
@KazWolfe I know Mr. Wolfe although you use your real last name, not all of us do :)
@KazWolfe China has their own search engine, forget the name though.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix how do you know he's not a dog?

oog
you know what's fun?

eating pizza.

@KazWolfe not really blocked. Chinese great firewall sends packets to "probe" if it's a tor connection and only then blocks it.
Also, there's VPN and stuff

@Seth Well, I never!

12:54 AM
@Seth I've seen dogs they aren't smart enough to type... they just sniff urine all day and lick their privates.

spending an hour and a half gathering quotes, writing analyses on them, then making an outline for a 4-5 page essay @Seth

@Serg the great firewall is pretty hard to beat, unfortunately.

I wish I had pizza :'(

@WinEunuuchs2Unix *growls*

12:55 AM
@Seth my beer glass looks different, plus add a lemon.

I need to work on this more, but I can't until my teacher responds to my email

@KazWolfe that wasn't directed at wolves they are smart, just your cousin the dog.
@KazWolfe As we all know wolves can type and garner 26k points in AU.

i wish i had 26k in AU

AU says you have 26K points rep.

12:58 AM
wow, that was quick. doc sent, now to wait until tomorrow, when I have to finish the outline (maybe redo it), do a few more analyses, and then write a page of the essay (which shouldn't be too hard with all the analyses done)

Ask Ubuntu Kaz Wolfe
25.7k 11 99 241

One of my instructors told me today "I'm gonna try to get you an exemption from Linux Admin I, but you will need to put together a portfolio to show the head of the department" /me whips out Ask Ubuntu profile (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)
7

i think i know my own rep better...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix chat rep combines all earned rep (ie not counting +100 "trusted" rep) on every SE site the user has an account

I clicked your name, then I clicked User Profile and that comes up.

12:59 AM
i still know more about how much rep i have.

User Profile in chat is the Chat User Profile

after all, i track it like crazy.

if you want to see the per-site rep or the parent site rep, you need to click the link below the User Profile one

@Zacharee1 Oh.. thanks... explains why my rep is so low here...LOL

@WinEunuuchs2Unix O_o
Nope, not yet.

1:00 AM
kekkles

@NathanOsman I meant "here" as in chat is lower than in AU.

@Seth you just bypassed linux admin III.

Should I work more on this essay? urgggh

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I was answering this comment:
19 mins ago, by WinEunuuchs2Unix
Hi @Nathan I thought you were married anyway :p\

@WinEunuuchs2Unix check the direct reply. I don't think it's what you think it is

1:01 AM
@KazWolfe Seth was busy correcting L.D. James on the inner workings of $DISPLAY in chrontab.

This mobile site is terrible on phones but amazing on a tablet

@NathanOsman that was like eons ago.... no one can remember that far back in time!!!

@Zacharee1 You should try it on a Hololens...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's why you click the link

@WinEunuuchs2Unix That was Serg.

1:02 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix If you click the arrow next to the reply, you can see the message I replied to.

@NathanOsman have you? and those are available now?

@NathanOsman you wanna buy it for me?

@KazWolfe LOL my bad.... so many S words

@Zacharee1 No. And only to developers.

awww

1:03 AM
@NathanOsman i'm a developer.
@Zacharee1 is a developer.

@KazWolfe N. O. (which coincidentally are my initials)

@NathanOsman wait no, the DE is available for $3k

<<< used to be a developer

@NathanOsman you could be Meghan Trainor: "My name is N.O."

@WinEunuuchs2Unix what languages?

1:04 AM
ASSEMBLER, COBOL, BASIC, RPG, FORTRAN, C

Assembly*

Well FORTRAN and PASCAL were in school, that doesn't count.

Of those, I've never heard of RPG.

@Seth what a boss

RPG is a high-level programming language (HLL) for business applications. RPG is an IBM proprietary programming language and its later versions are only available on IBM i or OS/400 based systems. It has a long history, having been developed by IBM in 1959 as the Report Program Generator - a tool to replicate punched card processing on the IBM 1401 then updated to RPG II for the IBM System/3 in the late 1960s, and since evolved into an HLL equivalent to COBOL and PL/I. It remains a popular programming language on the IBM i operating system, which runs on IBM Power i platform hardware. The current...

1:05 AM
@NathanOsman IBM proprietary, so no wonder :p

We had the Assembly argument last week, I checked Wiki yesterday and they said for decades professionals say "ASSEMBLER" and it is sanctions.

and i say it's still wrong, as per the people who made it.
fite me irl

Lol, @KazWolfe, you're old :D

@KazWolfe Yes that RPG, but now days called RPG/400 (now days = 16 years ago)

@NathanOsman ?
where'd that come from

1:06 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix (16 years ago == over half my life)
@KazWolfe You knew the guy who created "assembler"?

@KazWolfe don't use the creator argument, especially if you say GIF with a hard G

@NathanOsman no, i know what he said.

@Zacharee1 Okay, jrandpa.

@NathanOsman I had a "crisis" and lost the world of software development.

and he said it's "assembly"

1:07 AM
@NathanOsman probably some online statement....
@NathanOsman I say it with a hard G because of the acronym and because it doesn't sound stupid. I'm just pointing out that you can't really use the way the creator says it to back up your argument :p

@Zacharee1 yay for saying both "jif" and "gif"

Sigh. Let's start from the top. It's an acronym. The expanded form is "graphics interchange format" not "jraphics interchange format". Right? Right.

@Zacharee1 I'm going to come to your house and dance around chanting "ASSEMBLER" ten times.

Here.
Let's just do this, okay?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix why should I care?

1:09 AM
Take GIF, and get rid of it. GIF sucks.

^--- this

Replace it with APNG or WebM.

No, with FLIF: flif.info
It's better than PNG and WebM/P and even JPEG.

but WebM has support.
so.

@NathanOsman Right, but the creators say it's supposed to be JIF. _I say GIF, because JIF is stupid and my graphics ain't no peanut butter. "The creator said it so it's right" is invalid as an argument. <-- all I'm trying to say

1:10 AM
@Zacharee1 Fair enough. You triggered my fanboy-ism :D

@Zacharee1 creator decides the name. that's the rule.

sigh

And why it's not GNU/Linux.

@KazWolfe Then it's JIF

@KazWolfe you don't have to beat the great firewall, you just have to get around it.

1:11 AM
@Serg if you bypass it, you've beaten it.

@Serg so then you could say you're beating around the great firewall/bush

@Zacharee1 #zach_puns

:32866806
uhhh
alright mobile
@Serg huehuehuehuhe

@Zacharee1 how about "fighting firewalls with gasoline"

oh yeah, did you all hear about how the Note 7 is dead?

1:12 AM
besides, I'll probably get involved with Ubuntu Kylin then

yep.
Long Live OnePlus!

halted manufacturing, and sent out return kits to everyone
@KazWolfe or LG :(

@Zacharee1 Samsung lost 17 billion this morning on Note 7... they made a mistake discontinuing it.

@Zacharee1 GTFO

@WinEunuuchs2Unix mistake discontinuing it? xD

1:13 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix how is cutting losses a mistake?
also... [[citation-needed]]

Actually . . . . i should post my indicators on them Kylin forums. I wanna spread my market

@KazWolfe I feel sorry for LG. They make nice phones, but Samsung always kills them (lose $100s million every year)

@Zacharee1 yes they should have taken Note 6 Edge and called it 7 and given it away to all users.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix That is called "fraud"

There is no Note 6 Edge, wat

1:14 AM
@Zacharee1 yeah, LG is good, but still overpriced.

@KazWolfe It's called saving 17 billion dollars.

@KazWolfe there's an XDA article. Their stocks dropped ˜9%

When I was getting this iPhone, I was deciding whether to get a G5 or the iPhone.

Wait 1 year and they will recover what they lost.

@KazWolfe not their non-flagships. But I think the V20 is actually a pretty fair price: $800. Cheaper than the Note 7 and arguably better specs/features

1:15 AM
The public has a short memory.

one year? six months, tops.

@KazWolfe If they gave me 1 billion dollars I would have saved them 16 billion dollars for free.

LOL.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Hindsight is 20/20.

@KazWolfe yeah, the G5 was a bit of a flop
still a nice idea, but badly executed

1:15 AM
That said buy Samsung stock long tomorrow before markets open in NYC.

I've had my own issues with Samsung batteries.

@NathanOsman orly

Unless you have a time machine to go back and tell them that the G7N was horrible, you can't do anything about it. They couldn't have saved the 17bn.

I'm kind of glad I have an Anker battery in my phone rn :p

The temperature gauge went wonky on one of my old Samsung smartphones and it would report a capacity of 0% unless the ambient temperature was greater than 25° C.

1:17 AM
I have an Alcatel One Touch Idol 3, 5.5" nice little phone. cheap like Borsh.

Poor Sammy :(. The Note 7 was a great phone (not a phone for me, but still great). Too bad they couldn't actually fix the problem.

i'm sure they could have.

Meh, OP3 all the way.

@NathanOsman that is... stange to say the least

@Zacharee1 Yup, but reproducible.

1:18 AM
@KazWolfe couldn't as in didn't (ahh, colloquialisms)

0
A: How can I get one wallpaper for each day of the week?

davidlj95Have you tried Variety? I started using it last week and it's really useful

low quality

hmm

link only too

@Zacharee1 same way they couldn't save 17bn.

I NEED TO REVIEW OMG

1:18 AM
@Serg I saw that one, I was going to post something but was too lazy.

@NathanOsman this

@KazWolfe exactly
crucify me all you want, but I can't stand 1080p displays

(and no, they couldn't have saved 17bn because they didn't know the problem existed.)

I can see the pixels and that really bothers me

@Zacharee1 ಠ_ಠ

1:19 AM
@NathanOsman *phone displays

@NathanOsman he has to have them 4k or better.

@Zacharee1 For the rest of us with normal eyes...
There are no phones with 4k displays, are there?
Just 2K.

exactly.

@KazWolfe well if they'd fixed the issue instead of saying they did and then not, then they would've only lost less than half that
2.5k/QHD is what I can deal with

@Zacharee1 you miss my point. trups, btw.

1:20 AM
@Zacharee1 Just get an iPhone. You know you want one :D

@NathanOsman oh yeah, glorious 750P!

The point is, hindsight is always perfect. "If they never released the phone, they would have saved $17b."
Not how it works.

That is mildly funny.
@KazWolfe ...without a time machine, anyway.

@NathanOsman exactly. They couldn't have "saved" anything here.

1:21 AM
@KazWolfe no, what I'm saying is they would've lost less than half that amount if they'd just actually made sure the issue was fixed instead of rushing out replacements

They needed better QA is what they really needed.

@Zacharee1 unless their QA thought it was fixed?
It's impossible to get 100% test covreage.

@KazWolfe yeah, but these occurrences are pretty frequent now

@KazWolfe No, but testing a battery is kinda... well, obvious.
Use heavily, subject to wear and tear, apply heat.

if explode, batry iz bad. if no explode, iz gud
2

1:22 AM
Simple things to automate.

You want more than that.

RIP THE BATTERY IN HALF

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, I was looking for someone to write an answer under my guidance/collaboration , but nobody responded, so i guess i'll have to write one myself

@Zacharee1 Is that syntatically correct LOLCODE?

You need to test battery over-charge/full-deplete, overvolt, overdraw, and a few other things.

1:23 AM
@Zacharee1 That is not going to end well.

and short.

@KazWolfe Actually, holding the Note 7 under a bright incandescent for a few hours while it's on full brightness with GPS, BT, etc is enough to kill it
@NathanOsman is it?
@NathanOsman you brought up wear and tear :D

@Serg, are you talking about L.D. James?

@Zacharee1 so test batteries forever to see if they blow up. Got it, no new innovations,

@Zacharee1 wear-and-tear != heat death of the universe

1:24 AM
100% test coverage is impossible.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix nope. He posted on his own. I was asking in chat for someone who wanted to collaborate with me.

@KazWolfe well if a few batteries from one batch decide to combust, then you know there's something up with the source of that batch

There will always be something in day-to-day that just couldn't be tested.

@KazWolfe the fact that this doesn't happen regularly proves, at least to me, that testing is generally sufficient to prevent explosions

@Serg, you just need to hack into the default wallpaper.

1:25 AM
and what if samsung's test batteries were just fine, but the production ones failed for some reason?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Caching.

@KazWolfe I'd think they would test at least some batteries from each batch of production batteries. Otherwise, that's not very good QA

@Zacharee1 yeah, they tested 100 batteries from each batch. Coincidentally, none of those 100 were from Machine 14, where the explodey batteries came from.

@KazWolfe I don't buy Samsung's bad supplier of battery argument... It's go to be in the control circuits/EEPROM.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix not necessary to hack into anything. there is command line function that can change wallpaper.

1:27 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix i can tell you with 100% certainty it's not.

@Serg OK... I was looking at the screen.

Source: I had a number of LiPo batteries blow up in my face. These things had no control circuits/EEPROM.

@KazWolfe well that's just bad testing. If they use different machines, then those machines should also be inspected and have their output tested

@KazWolfe OK I don't have an exploding Apple or Samsung phone, you win!

@Zacharee1 50 machines, 100 batteries per machine per batch.
test 100 batteries per machine = no output.

1:28 AM
That would be 50 batteries to test each unit
because you don't need to test them all
just one or two

testing just one can result in a fluke.

But it's better than not doing it at all

"oh crap, the battery we tested from machine 9 failed! throw them all away! but the battery from 14 passed, so let them go out."
see?

if you get a positive, then you inspect other batteries and the machine

I still think it's a trickle charge versus fast charge issue.

1:29 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nope.

if you test 2 or three, then you're more likely to figure out a false negative
@WinEunuuchs2Unix phones with the green icon update still exploded

it has nothing to do at all with battery control/circuits.

@KazWolfe well Serg is the Electrical Engineer in the family ask him.

it's the battery cells themselves.
No control circuits or load or anything. They just decided to go boom.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix And I've made drones, and those batteries (unprovoked) decided to blow up.
those batteries use the same chemistry as your cell phone.

@KazWolfe I do want to say, this is a Lithium battery that's being dealt with. That stuff is extremely dangerous and should be heavily tested: routine inspections, multiple batteries from each machine tested in each batch, etc.

1:31 AM
@KazWolfe Next time you make a drone don't have the hell-fire missile seek back to the launch site.

It's just not excusable in my mind to be lax over potentially fatal defects in a product
and yeah, Apple's let a few defects slip, so has Moto I bet, so has LG in all likelihood. It's just that it wasn't as large scale as the Note 7

@Zacharee1 especially to the tune of 18 billion dollars... they should fire the president and hire us!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix still 17b for now

@Zacharee1 I added a billion in change because 18 is my favourite number :)

Don't you guys remember antenna-gate?

1:34 AM
@NathanOsman NO..... I remember watergate (well not really)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the battery was sitting on my desk, just doing nothing.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you can't just change facts to match your favorite number.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix The original *-gate?
:P

@NathanOsman no, the gate that held back the water.

and the failure thereof.

1:35 AM
@KazWolfe Can you tell that to our presidential candidates this year?

@KazWolfe I used to sit at my desk doing nothing all day and making 140k/yr. Now I work for $20/hr and run around all day like a gerbal :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix [[dubious-discuss]]
@DonaldJTrump @HillaryClinton You can't just change facts to match your favorite number

what is a dubious discus double brace?

@KazWolfe This one?

That looks like a Mathew not a Nathan

1:37 AM
@KazWolfe har har

@Zacharee1 her her

@NathanOsman say that out loud

@NathanOsman didn't know you were into that

@KazWolfe xD

well whatever, imma not judge. guys gotta do what guys gotta do

1:38 AM
@Zacharee1 you're pronouncing it wrongly.

@NathanOsman I have 13 days of Thanksgiving left-overs can I die from too much turkey?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Probably.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yes.

Better have a hot dog every once and a while to be sure.

I haz a guestion

1:39 AM
@NathanOsman Haha you wish, you just want my 2 k points.

I'm being srs

@Serg no

@WinEunuuchs2Unix We can't move points around.

@KazWolfe o rly?

How do i make chrome have apps transferred between machines ?

1:39 AM
@Serg sync them with your Google profile.

@NathanOsman Yeah, i think sedatives in turkey are lethal at a certain point.

@KazWolfe Shog moved them to /dev/null

@KazWolfe I was joking, I'm not really that paranoid :p

@Serg chrome://settings/

@KazWolfe probably after you'd die from ingesting so much turkey

1:40 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Use the reply button. Kthx.

@Serg log in? Mine does that

Eating that much turkey is dangerous. Better eat bacon instead to be safe.

@NathanOsman I just want to say, you started it, bacon

@NathanOsman actually bacon is more dangerous

@Kaz, sorry reply button?....lol I'm AU challenged (or meta if you will)

1:41 AM
I've reviewed 666 CVs >:D
@KazWolfe actually, the inability to joke is more dangerous :p

@Kaz hb... can I have that badge? Haven't got one in a blue moon :(

omg these fricking audits

1:43 AM
@Zacharee1 if you fail the audits they stop coming.

@KazWolfe uh no

@Zacharee1 they do
as does your ability to access the review queue, but the audits stop coming.

I figured that's where you were going

mostly because you can't see them anymore.

and done

1:45 AM
Ah, how lovely. Now I can use a proxy extension for chrome at work
yay

We use Windows XP VM at work, so disgusting :(

Windows 7 here. Our IT department was smart enough not to upgrade to 8 or 10

It gets worse, Navision from like 2009.
I had Windows 7 on my laptop but I bricked the 500gb hard drive using Intel RST and EnhanceIO at the same time to the mSata... Now I can't get Win 7 to reauthenticate.
