Same thing what I said about Mir: it'll take years before any of them are stable

Yeah, you're probably right.
Which one do you think will win out? Wayland or Mir?
Or is there enough room for both?

There's always room for both. It's just the question of timing. Once any of them has proper support for variety of hardware and legacy apps, then that one will win. Mir seems to be doing better in that regard, as omgubuntu just today released article talking about legacy apps on Unity 8.

I hate politics.

Not you only

1:07 AM
someone make me go to the gym and work out...

@TheXed cracks a whip
( hey, you asked XD )

I'm really starting to hate politics this last week too :(
Happy Ubuntu 16.10 Eve everyone :D

@Serg well that was ineffective...

@TheXed there are hot girls at the gym ;)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no there isn't and if there were my wife would not approve...

1:12 AM
Oh well you asked for incentive, you didn't stipulate realistic

@TheXed how about this one - your wife wants the 6 pack back

That is a fallacy...hot people don't hangout at gyms...

And on your way back, pick up a 6 pack of beer for me and Serg

@Serg I have a 6 pack of beer for her...

XD

1:14 AM
@TheXed I don't go to gym so don't know.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix you should try it sometime...

@TheXed I already have Roller Blades I need to use more, why buy a gym membership I need to use more?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix oh right...I forget how spoiled I am...since our gym is a not-for-profit it is only 10 dollars a month...I always forget how expensive it is...for other people

@TheXed my fingers get a good workout typing in AskUbuntu :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix you could roller-blade to the gym and then work out then rollerblade back...
kill two birds with one stone

1:18 AM
I'd rather pick up two birds with one smile.
Now that would be a great way of getting into shape!
Oh it seems Ubuntu 16.10 came out today and not tomorrow. Is it worth the time installing it?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix how do you pick up a bird with a smile?

@TheXed "bird" is 1970's british term for American "chicK", ie girl.

Oh...
I see...that makes more sense....

Sorry... sometimes I forget how old I am...LOL

How old are you then?

1:33 AM
Does anyone else find it hard to do homework at work, even though i pretty much spend here whole day ?

@Serg I find it hard to do work at work...
So maybe I am not the right person to ask...
Where is it that you work anyways that you even have the option to do homework while at work?

My university's computer lab. We're supposed to be called IT, but really we're just front desk puppets, and soon we won't be even allowed to change printer paper

Paper is danger you can get paper cuts. Best left to a well trained professional.
5

@Serg where I work we are trying to convince people to stop using printers, and copiers...
its not working...
every other day I get a complaint about such and such printer or copier not working...
and I am always like well I have been told not to spend a bunch of time on printers unless it is a networking issue, and if it is a copier we have to call the copier lease company...
So I power cycle, and check for paper jams, and make sure I can see it on the network...
other then that I do nothing...
don't even put toner in them anymore...

Yeah we kill lots of trees at work... just the design of the systems, procedures and policies.

1:44 AM
in fact I have even been told not to buy any more toner...I wonder how that will go...

@TheXed well, this is university. Which means on daily basis people print shiz ton of papers, quizzes, exams, and other stuff. We're told that the new printers they're gonna buy will have larger capacity, but the thing is on daily basis we add paper multiple times. There's going to be a person walking around and refilling them, but . . .
I am pretty sure it all will burn and crash
You have a person on the spot, let them do the work ! Instead we're told not to touch them
And especially the unmanned labs . . . there will be couple rooms soon with no front desks
Boy, are they asking for trouble

@Serg but I work for a pre-k-12 school distict 6-12 each kid has a Chromebook, and each teacher has a Chromebook...the only ones that should be printing (and I have no problem with) is pre-k-5th.

@TheXed 6 - 12 ? they are supposed to print. I mean, papers, essays, exams. . . all that has to be printed

6-12 is highly encouraged to hand/distribute everything digitally...

Sure, blame it on the professors, but unless the district just tells them "OK, you shall not print" , then ain't nothing you can do. And even then professor can be like "screw the district, i do what i want in my classroom"
Mkay . . . i need to get at least something good done today

1:58 AM
What I understand is that yes it is better to do everything digitally, but it is hard to retrain someone after they have done things a certain way for 15-20 years...

So . . . starting a blog

administration doesn't see it that way...all they see is dollar signs...

@TheXed retraining is possible . . . it's just older generation who haven't had much exposure to tech. Take my mother for example. She has learned how to watch youtube and read news, even chat on social network, but file transfer form camera to computer is " . . . too advanced for me."

@Serg Not in k-12, I don't think.
or did you transition back to college?

@Seth I didn't transition anywhere, i'm still talking about k-12. At least in my high school professors were asking for hard copies of papers

2:02 AM
yeah but your school didn't have a no printing policy, did it?

Well i shouldn't say training is hard...we can do that all day and all night and they get it...it is a mindset and habits that hinder progress...honestly...

@TheXed habits play role too, but I am convinced it's the "not my comfort zone" type of thinking and willingness to learn. I see that lacking
@Seth maybe it had , i don't remember anymore
so, what should i call my blog ?
"Sergiously ?"
Sergiocity ?
Sergalicious ?

2:22 AM
anyone around

still asquare

2:42 AM
@Serg if I change the source code is it possible to make single click work like it used to in old versions of ubuntu

@William Unity is desktop name, launcher is part of Unity desktop. If you change source code, sure , it might work

@Serg do you know what the source is named at minimum
is it called laurcher or unity
I'm downloading the unity source now
I could never get your script here to work askubuntu.com/questions/651188/single-click-expose
do you mind posting a video of it working or something

@Serg "Power Serg" ?

sergalicious definicous make dem boys go loco

...and sound like two year olds...
jus' sayin'

2:57 AM
do you guys know anything about the ubuntu source code

hi

howdy

I mustered the motivation to go work out...
now I am eating chocolate...

can you help me

@William no I am all out of chocolate. Sorry.

3:02 AM
@William well, there's tons of files there and i don't know which one in particular is responsible for expo or launcher
time to go home . . .

@Serg hurry back

@Serg I will attempt to figure it out thank you
next question can you post a video of your script working
it doesn't work for me
another question how do I set a key on my keyboard to a numpad return

Cool my icons are now a normal size...
which they haven't been since I installed Ubuntu on this computer

What's the weather like up there @NathanOsman?

3:22 AM
Another question is there a way to set a key to the numpadkeyenter key?

@William which key ? look into setxkb program

@Serg I would like to set the CapsLock key to a NumpadEnter key
I would like to refrain from using sexkb and solely use keyboard maps if possible

3:45 AM
@Serg oh hey...

good night i figured it out suprisingly kinda happy it works

4:05 AM
@Seth We have multiple rainfall warnings from Environment Canada.
And it's quite windy.
They're predicting a pretty nasty storm on Saturday.

4:39 AM
Which of these takes the longest?
Vote now.

5:11 AM
Grrrr, downvote on a working answer, which addresses the question,and no comment why the downvote.

where?

on U&L

5:30 AM
I've got so many nested template definitions here, I'm worried it might gain sentience:
template <typename Func1>
    inline typename QtPrivate::QEnableIf<!QtPrivate::AreArgumentsCompatible<QObject*, typename QtPrivate::List_Select<typename QtPrivate::FunctionPointer<Func1>::Arguments, 1>::Value>::value>
            registerMethod(const QString &name, Func1 slot, bool readAll = true) {
        registerMethod(name, Q_NULLPTR, slot, readAll);
    }
Worst of all, it doesn't even work ಠ_ಠ

5:49 AM

this is not a duplicate askubuntu.com/q/836793/61218

6:16 AM
@Anwar you're giving some good advice there :)

7:01 AM
I don't know how many times that's happened to me.

7:21 AM
@NathanOsman lol

doesn't happen to me since i don't dual boot no more

no windows here

i should try dualbooting because yolo
i have free access to windows i think

7:33 AM
This is getting creepy.
For the third night in a row, I've been stuck on a different C++ template bug.
And without fail, each night, I never get the problem solved until after midnight.
No wonder programmers get no sleep.

someone blindly upvoting everything...

Well, at least I have it solved now. Goodnight everyone.

night :)

@terdon can something be done about "sample bash output" in answers ? unix.stackexchange.com/a/316355/85039 The single quotes make it look as if everything is colorized. I sure can escape each and every one of them, but . . . maybe there's a simpler approach

7:59 AM
use the pre tag

@Rinzwind can you edit my answer , so i have example ?

just to make sure: you want it all 1 color?
the 1st bit (bash)
ie demo

yes, only demo

done
wait
not done
DONE
It wanted an edit summary :X so not used to those

@Rinzwind neat, thanks

8:06 AM
haha yeah when editing on another site I always get thrown by that. I should actually write edit summaries :S I only do it if I want to communicate with OP, like "I did this because..." or "I'm not sure whether this was part of your code or your formatting so please check"

yay it got approved >:)

by me

@Zanna hey yes I know you got 100k rep on AU but we on U+L do not trust you.
I blame @terdon for that >:-D
+2 rep on U+L :X

So you're just like me, you mostly spend time on AU here
I only got 1.7k on U&L, not nearly enough privilleges

Ask Ubuntu 140,052 rep 17273378
Anime & Manga 786 rep 66
Chess 331 rep 15
Unix & Linux 195 rep 6
Super User 188 rep 18
So even chess rated higher then U+L with me >:)

8:11 AM
haha
U&L is my second-highest, 343

ah my nice 140040 is gone :(

wasnt palindrome anyway
no need to be upset

140052 is 12 nicer then 140040 anyways :=D

ok, im out , gnight guys

8:30 AM
VTD'd

thanks, maybe I'll get my point back hehe

Happy Friday folks. Anyone using Yakkety?

I can't do an upgrade on this monster I think, I'll have to get the iso and mod it and install over.

askubuntu.com/q/836853/295286 the question in question

aah but it's not the one i think - lock screen is different (on MATE anyway)

@Zanna Well, you know, you young whippersnappers, always changing your versions, flavours and distros! Once time begins t take it's toll, comfort and stability seem more appealing ;)

9:01 AM
haha I only change when pushed generally
I installed MATE to answer a question haha

How did your adventures with Arch end up?

had to give the laptop away, next time I get a random laptop from someone I'll install Arch again

Hi there

Q: General questions about free software and open source

Manuel FernandesWhat is the primary difference between a Free Software Licence and an Open Source Licence? if you have a project that is intended for use by academics and may be included in a product which might have patent bearing or commercial code, Which license would you select?

Oh! Now I see the SmokeDetector at work! Interesting! :-)

@Serg Good evening you here ?

9:57 AM
A few minutes ago there was a "question" posted by a frustrated person. I have hesitated on how to flag it? should I flag it as rude, or should I take it seriously and try to answer it (in the comment section)? I'm really surprised to see someone saying that this community doesn't encourage new users or long posts! And the complain about being grammar nazi?! Then how should we speak/write here? Like analphabets?! Being corrected by someone should not be considered as offensive, au contraire!
Some people have a very simplistic idea of freedom.

@CristianaNicolae I think flagging as rude/offensive is the way to go. If they really want a discussion on how helpful the community is they could ask a question on Meta, without all of the abusive stuff.

10:26 AM
nice - another Yearling badge. Time passes in no time.

@Arronical Some people, especially new users, really don't realize that there is a Meta website connected to AU.

Informed badge awarded 30865 times, that is 5% only.

@CristianaNicolae Yeah, I've noticed that, funny because my natural curiosity made me click on it in the first week of using. If the post hadn't been so rude, it would have been appropriate to flag it for migration to Meta, which has the side effect of teaching the user about Meta. That person just wanted to vent, friends/family/therapists are a better outlet for that. Plus I think I saw that they had roughly 200 rep?
@Takkat Haha, after all why would you want to find out how something works before using it? Next we'll be expecting people to try googling their question first, or actually asking things about Ubuntu!

10:43 AM
lol - so true.

11:11 AM
@Takkat wow I can't believe it's so low!

@Arronical Actually, I usually google my question first... Maybe that's why many times I stop asking here... He-he! Besides of that, I saw that some people tend to use the comment section just to say "go, search on Google", which is half logical and half rude.

@Zanna it always was. We don't even have to read it all... it counts when we just scroll down to the bottom of the tour.

@CristianaNicolae Yeah, it's not always constructive to do that, but I can understand it gets frustrating when someone has obviously not tried to find out by themselves!

11:48 AM
takky!
anyone know how to install a router in Ubuntu? >:)

Q: How to install MikroTik?

Monika LachowiczI need to install MikroTik , but I can't do it using Windows on virtual machine, because my CPU has no virtualization support and don't let me to install this. How I can do it using for example terminal ?

@Arronical Some people simply don't know how to do a correct search on Google. They may be self-learners (with all the intrinsic risks of self-learning), very young or very old. Besides of that, the very fact that they first come here, on AskUbuntu to ask a question, may be a sign of their high trust in it. (No need to search elsewhere, AU is the one I need.) :-)

all I find on microtik is an --actual-- router :X

@Arronical doesn't usually bother me - most of the questions I can answer would never have been asked if OP did research >_<

@Arronical easy rep :=D

@Takkat yeah and obviously I have never and would never go to the tour and scroll to the bottom just to get a badge after making an account on another SE site...

12:00 PM
@CristianaNicolae I get that, sometimes I even struggle to come up with sensible phrasing for a question on here, never mind a useful google search. I always try to be kind to the new ones, I but I can see why when someone asks a question like "How do I make a directory in the terminal?", some users get frustrated.
@Zanna You're being too modest again! Installing Arch, modifying the installation iso, using chroots, not exactly basics.
@CristianaNicolae I'm mostly a self-learner myself, and vividly remember knowing so little that my questions were really clumsy, and seem really embarrassing to look at now. I think it's nice to be patient and welcoming to new users of both Ubuntu and AU, and I always try to exemplify that.

@Arronical Today I had a discussion with my mother regarding a basic Google search. During a common on-phone conversation she happened to mention the fact that she has googled for a certain company but all she could find were phone numbers and physical address, but no e-mail address. "That can't be possible!" I said and Googled for that company.
In seconds I've found out their e-mail address! Immediately told to my mother about it. Guess what she has replied to me: "Well, yes, I've tryed to click on it and all I got was a 404 error!". Me: "Huh?!" Our phone call was suddenly interrupted and thus I have never got the chance to figure out what she was actually talking about. Because, obviously, we were talking about different things.

@Arronical Heh thanks :) you just reminded me of the beauty of arch-chroot

@Arronical Anyway, she is basically,a self-learner (too proud to learn from me, because : "You weren't even born when I was programming PASCAL!"), and sometimes, she makes newbye-style mistakes. So, even a person who uses PC every day and has plenty of experience, can have problems handling a .pdf, a player, or Google search engine.

@CristianaNicolae Haha! I get frustrated because I can only find the email addresses of a company, when I want a phone number! That's when gethuman or the like need to be employed.

Q: No rule to make target when execute "make"

Ender PhanI am getting stuck with Makefile when I'm trying to execute the make command line to compile those C files ( https://github.com/Arvin-X/liinux ). I am guessing it conflicts with the version of kernel header which does not match with Makefile properties. Makefile: obj-m := liinux.o KERNEL_DIR = ...

As far as I can tell, that's asking "how can I fix my Ubuntu so this compiles". I mean, the solution won't include any C code, only installing things from the repos. I think

3:40 PM
currently installing trusty unity :)

god i hate morning traffic. It's like " I'm gonna be on time today" and you get on highway . . . Nope, late again. Duck

Yeah. It's even worse than morning breath.

interesting comparison

4:03 PM
morning breath is fixable with quick brushing. traffic is minutes of crawling behind other cars

@Serg I am glad that I am salary..

so i have an ubuntu/matematica question
i'm trying to execute ubuntu shell commands from mathematica mathematica but they don't work

what's mathematica?

Do you think the ISS has to honor No Fly Zones?

4:15 PM
@TheXed its to high up for them to care

@William but maybe they should...

@TheXed lol

I mean they have things up there like Raspberry Pi's and Russians...

do they have anything that flies?

@jokerdino besides the ISS?

4:20 PM
hmm, debris

:32919863 1. I was sort of hinting that it might be better not to assume we know stuff, but I guess I'm the only one... 2. It reminds me pleasantly of mata atlantica

@Zanna 1. Fair point. 2. Read your first point.
Btw, I didn't get pinged o.O

and it didn't reply to the post either!

yeah, looks like it happens if you reply to a deleted chat message.

oh. interesting.
I meant to explain what mata atlantica is, but my phone rang
sorry

4:30 PM
Found it on Google, no worries.
The Atlantic Forest (Portuguese: Mata Atlântica) is a terrestrial biome and region which extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina, where the region is known as Selva Misionera. The Atlantic Forest has ecoregions within the following biome categories: tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, and mangrove forests. The Atlantic...

I have been in it :)

:O

but the really cool thing I learned from George Monbiot's book Feral, is that actually our woods here are part of the same forest...

> Your mom was a terrible idea.

Importing woods from Atlantic forest?

4:32 PM
someone is spamming with your mom comments not sure if there spam technicaly

;)
@William link?

in The Nineteenth Byte, 1 min ago, by Geobits
Your mom was a terrible idea.

ah chat room flags.

just makes me laugh

@jokerdino we have destroyed our woods appallingly, but there are tiny pockets of the ancient forest tucked away on the coast... we were joined onto the other side once... and if it weren't for the sheep and the logging, we would have rainforest here!

4:36 PM
apparently your-mom is a coding golf language.. weird name that.

Rainforest?

yeah, apparently the definition of rainforest is where some types of plants can grow on other plants because it's sufficiently wet

GUYS 70 CVS WHY

Oh
@Zanna Huh, cool. I stand corrected.

it's definitely wet on the west coast anyway...

4:37 PM
To put it mildly :)

@Zanna ah, neat! and sad. :(

@terdon ??

@terdon hardly... you didn't say I was wrong!

Cheers
@Zanna Well, I was writing it out when you explained what rainforest actually means :) So I thought you were and was already high up on my pedantic-know-it-all horse

4:39 PM
xkcd 386 and stuff

So, temperate rain forests are a thing. Huh.
@jokerdino Someone wrong on the internet?

yeah

@jokerdino we can recover a lot of the biodiversity just by fencing out the sheep. I'm very hopeful because sheep-farming is not economical - it makes huge losses and is heavily subsidised.

Indeed.
@Zanna Tsk. Obviously, you're not Welsh.

@terdon hehe all good :)
@terdon not at all... but I know there are people who are passionate about their sheep-farming way of life although it is destructive :S

4:42 PM
welp, just like i thought. Prof wanted me to check computers in classrooms and there ain't nothing to check

flat and flat

i rushed here for nothing basically

@Zanna Sadly people are passionate about all sorts of destructive crap.

Hm, I must be hungry.. eating too much chat messages. brb for food.

@terdon true... and mostly the problem is landowners have too much power, obvs

4:43 PM
i now have time till 2 pm., then I'm gonna tutor C and go to work at 5

gtg, meeting my friend at Tate Modern omg I am late

good afternoon!

hi Ian

hey @Serg, whats up?

ain't much , surviving

4:45 PM
how is the indicator going?

Tutor c? the programing langauge?

yes @TheXed
@IanC stopped development for now. gotta catch up with classes
:32920646 why ?

@jokerdino what does that show exactly?

Because C, and C derivatives always made me want to shoot myself in the foot.

@Serg exams week?

4:49 PM
It's a trouble because I'm tutoring civil engineering students. They don't care about programming as much. C is totally ok language on basic level
@IanC sort of, I've exam on Monday, and we have to redo an exam in Data Communication class - average there was 63%
everybody fupped up

damn, was the test really hard or was it one of those teachers that like to cross every single thing? (or both? :p)

@IanC not hard and not that professor. We just didn't study well enoug
that's repo for tutoring
basic stuff so far, loops and functions
I need to add do while loop there
the way i see it is that most programming languages are of same syntax and have same elements. Real programming is on the levelnof ideas and synthesizing basic elements with those ideas
OK, 11 pm. how do i do stuff ? go and then come back to campus or what . . .

@Serg, I think a beginner with basic level of programming can start with C, because you can start making some programs without understanding it completely (like with most languages, except a few that have some harder concepts even for basic stuff)
