on askubuntu.com/questions/826010/… this is what I did: suggest edit adding text from answer. Now that "answer" should yet be deleted.
06:12
complicated now!
anyone read this question? askubuntu.com/q/825989/61218
is it only me who isn't seeing this ?
I saw that one
pressing super + j doesn't inputting j on the chat input field.
have I missed something from the question?
I commented on the question for clarification
your answer is correct. But they wanted some more on their question.
@Anwar that is all I could answer. I can edit with more details later.
06:22
@edwinksl lol true
morning || afternoon || evening
Why some software I installed with command line can't be searched in software center(press the window key)?
and
I backed and restored up my system once but some commands worked before (like "subl") don't work after restoring the system.
I dont understand
need more details
@Anwar same for me as for OP, but super key does nothing in MATE
@anwar suggested edit
@Zanna er depends what mode you are in. Some modes using MATE advanced menu will use super to load menu.
@KazWolfe loosely speaking
So, I didn't misunderstand the question... good at least. but Super + J doesn't display J here!
06:26
oh... for me same! I just tried in terminal and it did
it does in a terminal, but not here
the question needs clarification
yes
tested.... works as same in terminal
wheeee
06:30
I cant stop laughing... askubuntu.com/questions/825992/… LOLOL xD :D :P
@NathanOsman your yacht?
@edwinksl "The Spirit of Tux" - I cruise around the harbor once in a while.
(Lol, j/k - I couldn't even afford a canoe.)
Nathan AwesomeMan
lol
@NathanOsman please host AU party on your yacht
Of course.
06:32
okay
i'll be there in two weeks
Dude, it would be faster for me to sail to you :D
okay, then i'll be there in 72 hours
Do any of you have this store in your country?
@JamesTobin I think you mis-understood their third question :)
06:33
negative
The prices are obscene.
though it was hard
@Anwar where?
i know because someone commited card fraud with one of my cards
@KazWolfe Most of the shoes were in the $400-800 range.
06:35
@Anwar same as me?
yeah... i know.
@Zanna yes
Also went by the Tesla store.
Apparently we have a Ferrari store downtown.
@JamesTobin they waned some command line option so that programs will show in Dash search.
just written an essay-answer :)
06:37
@Anwar Ah good! consistency...
Anyway, I am exhausted. Time to call it a night.
Goodnight, all.
night!
@NathanOsman good night :)
good night @NathanOsman

06:44
yay the chatbot has started
oops i think I just edited your post at the same time as you... sorry @Anwar ... I'll fix it from revision history
hello chatbot
@KazWolfe how do I trigger it?
it's not live
chatbot: go nuts
lol
@KazWolfe where is it right now?
plus until i get permissions and the test room up, hopefully tomorrow, it's just gonna be mod and RO only.
06:47
make a room for it
tempor-airily
@Anwar I mostly kept your post as my edit, feel free to roll back if you prefer, I think I understood what you were saying
thing is, i don't have SE api knowledge, so i can't check for powers yet
@edwinksl just found your python question... I don't think the answer makes any sense...
@Zanna yeah i am aware of that. you gonna comment? :P
@Zanna also please edit it however you wish to make it clearer
$ ls -ld /usr/local/bin/python*
ls: cannot access '/usr/local/bin/python*': No such file or directory
seems a good question to me
I don't know what to comment on the answer except that ^^
but maybe they mean versions you installed yourself
I daren't comment haha
07:02
yeah i think they meant the pythons installed and compiled from source
which is not what you were asking about
right?
nope, not what i had in mind
I'll comment then steels self
it may be because the question is unclear though, so i am ready to share some blame
damn you gimp
07:07
maybe we could edit your question to say you haven't changed anything from the default Python2 installation, you haven't added any packages?
@Zanna the motivation for the question came from the comments to this askubuntu.com/questions/825945/python-2-7-9-1-is-not-available
essentially steeldriver, byte, oldfred and i were all confused about the version of python 2 we had
well the problem there is painfully obvious
interesting... I hope your question gets some love
meh, it is fine to be honest, life goes on and people will still kill snakes at will
lol
I killed 2 snakes today. They were pythons. Their names were "python2" and "python3"
they spoke a different language
very vicious and poisonous, yet very insecure things
07:32
@Zanna Thank you for the edits.
@Anwar :) glad you find it OK
07:50
oh I've reviewed 777 close votes
at least it's not 4777...
I backed up my new iPad's data, corrupted it and restored it to an old iPod and instant kernel panic
@Zanna you will get to 4777 soon
777 is still pretty bad with R :p
there's really no reason to give 777 to anything imho
yeah
when would one do it though
hypothetically
could be an AU question...
could be a dupe
if not ima ask!
07:58
@JamesTobin Nice to hear that
or you wanna ask?
you go ahead
i am about to go zzz
@Edity :D
you realise i was being sarcastic, right?
@edwinksl good sleep :)
07:59
gah
I'm going to bed now
@Zanna may the upvotes be with you
likewise ^_^
may the OP's final verdict be positive @Zanna
heh :)

@Zanna I gave a general permission already to edit all my posts. I know I don't write very good English :). So, no reason for me to find that not OK.
I need to brush my teeth & go to work, but my flatmate is taking the usual 90 minute shower :(
I'm in Seoul
I slept at 1:30 AM today
Timezone diffrence: 3 hours
but I used Windows key deliberately there. OP seems to be not too familiar with Super Key. but I'll leave it now. They should learn it :)
You go teach the noobs OP
:)
@Zanna that is a lot of water wasted :/
08:08
@Anwar :) I saw your invitation to edit in your profile, that's why I feel it is OK to edit for you. But still, your post belongs to you and I always feel editing can potentially be intrusive... oh I didn't even notice you put windows key... I was copying from your edit, since I edited after you I was correcting my own edit, so maybe conflict with intentions of your edit
@edwinksl yeah I can't even... what are they doing??? Best not to think about it...

later all :) xxx
have a fun day at work?
meanwhile I seriously need a massage
I walked 24 hours mate
Feel like getting Parkinsons
08:26
I need a massage too :(
I thought you needed to go?
Boy, that question made my brain burn
@Serg the one where you wrote a novel?
@edwinksl yup
feel quite satisfied
@Serg it is a good guide for people who have no idea how to install software in ubuntu
08:34
Might look a bit intimidating, but at least it's descriptive
testing
I wouldn't even look at it, if Anwar's incorrect statement in part 2 caught my eye.
@Serg the question does risk getting closed as being too broad
@edwinksl honestly, it should be closed as too broad. He asked 4 questions in one and very non-specific questions ,too, some of which could be dupes
As I was writing, I found myself writing more and more "it depends"
That's a good sign that the question is too broad
yeah i will not VTC for now... maybe i will change my mind when i wake up later :p

Q: "Failed To Fetch" when installing KDE

SaraI'm trying to install KDE 5 on my Ubuntu 16.04 system as per the instructions in this tutorial, but I'm getting the below error message when running sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. Is there something I can do to resolve this? Need to get 682 kB/326 MB of archives. After this operation, 1,...

he says to select best server but should i have to reinstall kde plasma then
@Sara I don't think reinstalling is necessary , you're just downloading updates from place that's temporarily unavailable. Elder Geek gave you proper answer, but his screenshots show Ubuntu settings not Kubuntu . But idea is the same
Ah, I see . . . so you are using default Ubuntu, but you want to install KDE
@sara After you change sources, like Elder Geek showed , try running sudo apt-get update
then try to install KDE again
Oh, look , it's pi oclock again . . .3:14
kde now installed but unfortunately i when i go there i get black screen
WAIT , don't touch that spam !!!
I wanna try something
I think it werks !!!
@Serg do u mean me
@Sara no, that wasn't for you, sorry. I got a little excited
Hmm , maybe your graphics card doesn't play nicely with KDE. That can happen. You can ask another question on the site, maybe someone has better ideas @Sara
09:19
@Serg what about install kde again
you know the internet speed is terrible
i don't want to wast time
@Sara you can try reinstalling, but its your choice. Is there a good reason you want KDE ?
It's a demanding desktop.
i hate default ubuntu
How about Gnome ?
want something cool
Hehe, anything can be cool, if you put some work into it :p
09:22
Gnome3
you mean
Yeah. There's also MATE desktop, which is based on Gnome 2
There's also Cinnamon
he he
@Serg do u work in Grocery
@Sara haha, no, I'm studying engineering. I mean this type of Cinnamon
This is type of desktop is default on Linux Mint

50 points so far, ain't bad
I think mate is named after the drink.
MATE (/ˈmɑːteɪ/; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmate]) is a desktop environment forked from the now-unmaintained code base of GNOME 2. It is named after the South American plant yerba mate and tea made from the herb, mate. The name was originally all capital letters to follow the nomenclature of other Free Software desktop environments like KDE and LXDE. The recursive acronym "MATE Advanced Traditional Environment" was subsequently adopted by most of the MATE community, again in the spirit of Free Software like GNU. (GNU's Not Unix!) The use of a new name, instead of GNOME, avoids conflicts with GNOME...

@JourneymanGeek yerba mate plant, out of which they make tea

hello serg
Hi, Edity !
i gotz new ipadz :)
Nice !
I wanna get one, but never save up enough for it
a ipad air, 16GB, with cellular data
I waiting 12 min on KDE plasma I still getting black page I can move mouse
@Sandro switch to something lighter
@JourneymanGeek No the herb (cinnamon is a herb too :))
Like what
xUbuntu is a lot lighter than kUbuntu
@Sandro Gnome is definitely lighter than KDE. LXDE, XDE , Openbox, blackbox
Cinnamon
Mate
Any of those is far lighter than KDE
What else . . .There's also razor

Sarayesterday i installed kde plasma on my ubunut 16.04.1 as i mentioned on this question "Failed To Fetch" when installing KDE and had black screen problem that i could logged in with kde and had mouse pointer but i couldn't do anything except log out. one of my friend on askubuntu chat suggested me...

OK , i should get some sleep
@Sara Try running sudo apt-get -f install
It sometimes helps fixing things
i did it, i get same issue
of course it ended with some error

My touchpad is breaking, the left key keeps getting stuck in the pressed down state as it moves and gets stuck underneath the actual bit to be touched to move the cursor on the touchpad. This is obviously a laptop, is there a way to easily replace the touchpad or at least its buttons if that is all that is required?
11:08
@ParanoidPanda Hmm, you could always switch to a usb mouse, you could also buy used version of your laptop and use it for spare parts, or you could reassign the touchpad buttons to keyboard shortcut. ( not sure about the last one, but that's a possible question for the site :)
user136984
@Serg: I will look into fixing the hardware issue, but have asked about the workaround! :)

Q: How to reassign touchpad buttons to keyboard?

Paranoid PandaI am running Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 with GNOME 3.20 on a Lenovo B590 laptop and my touchpad keys seem to be starting to break in the sense that they are always getting stuck and becoming a nightmare to use. As a workaround until I have managed to fix this annoying hardware issue, I was wondering i...

user136984
12:03
@Sara: It is a very bad idea to try to install new DEs on Ubuntu as I have found. It is better to just do a fresh install of whichever flavour it is which has the DE you want.
I sadly have to agree ^
what do u mean @ParanoidPanda reinstall kde
If you're fine with swapping themes every time you switch DEs, or using a theme that works for both, it's fine then
but @MarkYisri says that kde have some conflict with gnome
Where's @Anwar ? He's an expert on this topic I think...
user136984
12:06
@Sara: You shouldn't try to install a DE on a flavour which that DE was not pre-installed on.
user136984
For instance, I tried to install GNOME and remove Unity on the standard flavour, and everything stopped working... :D
user136984
I haven't looked at your question(s) so sorry if I've got the wrong idea about what you are trying to do.

coconut desktop
sudo app-get install coconut-desktop
i did that why i get sudo: app-get: command not found
@ByteCommander
apt-get
or simply apt on 16.04
but I never heard of coconut desktop...
user136984
@Sara: That's going to be hard to do, Unity is so connected with the system that you won't be able to remove it. And installing a new desktop environment may break it.
12:14
user136984
You should try to find an Ubuntu flavour with it pre-installed.
@ParanoidPanda common i don't want to remove unity
user136984
You're still going to have a conflict with the new desktop.
From my personal experience, Unity and XFCE go pretty well together, but Unity + Cinnamon was a disaster when suddenly Cinnamon stopped working.
user136984
I wouldn't advise having two desktops installed on the same Ubuntu system, definitely not when Unity is one of them.
user136984
12:16
@ByteCommander: Unity is quite dominant on the system and very integrated with the system so conflicts are common.
user136984
I would advise getting a system where the desktop you want is the pre-installed default and where there is no Unity.
user136984
Otherwise you are likely to have problems.
user136984
You'll probably also want a different DM and that is what will probably cause the most trouble.
Yeah... I can just say I had those two combinations in the past and Unity+XFCE worked mostly fine.
Dunno how much black voodoo magic was included.
i think i should have to forget kde, gnome, beauty in ubuntu
working like a mine worker
hay got it
i can not install anything on ubuntu
right now i tried to do this sudo apt-get install notepadqq
what happened
user136984
12:29
@Sara: Well, it wouldn't help that that package doesn't actually exist.
user136984
I just did a search for it and it is not present in the repositories, at least, not under that name.
@ParanoidPanda what about hexchat
i used
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/hexchat-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install hexchat
and get same problem
sudo apt-get install hexchat

@Sara: What is the output from cat /etc/apt/sources.list?
user136984
12:39
Have you installed anything from any PPAs and then removed the PPAs without downgrading or removing any packages you installed from there?
i don't see any sources.list file there
user136984
That's impossible, it must be there. What is the output from ls /etc/apt?
@ParanoidPanda i don't think so , not sure
user136984
Please provide the output from ls /etc/apt
apt.conf.d sources.list sources.list.save trusted.gpg.d

user136984

Right, so please show the output of the command cat /etc/apt/sources.list

A: "Failed To Fetch" when installing KDE

Elder GeekYou are having temporary difficulty reaching http://ir.archive.ubuntu.com I've found that one good way to resolve this problem is by opening Software And Updates. Choose Download from Other. Choose Select best server You'll see this: Click Choose Server to select the recommended server

@Elder Geek
user136984
@Sara: That just says to try another mirror, the Main Server is the most reliable though.
ok i did what everything u said and now im in update cache process
user136984
Ok, that's not guaranteed to fix your issue, however it is best to get everything from the Main Server, and some of your repos appeared to be disabled.
user136984
And it's one of the first things to try.
user136984
Mirrors sync with the Main Server, however if you want to get updates faster the Main Sever is the one to choose as it is what the mirrors sync from, but they may not sync as regularly as you may want.
12:55
@ParanoidPanda question: some of the American company ban my country ip
that doesn't cause the problem
like i can not download jdk with my country ip
user136984
Well, that could potentially be a problem if the server you are trying to install from is blocking your country IP, however unless you get such an error from the main server I doubt that this could be causing it.
sooooooo
user136984
Oh dear, sometimes I forget who I am... As in I am so intensely using my computer that I sort of forget that I exist outside it until my belly starts rumbling! :D
user136984
@Sara: Maybe you should just try doing a fresh install of Ubuntu.
user136984
That should fix most problems.
