oh damn, i reinstalled ubuntu 5 times
is that an unstable operating system
user136984
Perhaps you should try a different flavour?
user136984
@Sara: What do you get if you run the command sudo apt-get install vim?
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
user136984
God! My inbox is being spammed right now by yakkety-changes-request! :D
user136984
@Sara: That's probably gnome-sofware running in the background. Open it, go to the Updates section, and then close it and try again.
13:09
You rang @Sara
lol yes rang
Give me sec. Trying to catch up.
catch up what
:D
Your current issue
user136984
@Sara: He's probably just going to go up and read through the chat history.
13:11
Is the software center open?
yes
close it.
user136984
Well that wouldn't help.
user136984
(It being open.)
try the apt installation again.

user136984
What was the output from my dist-upgrade command I gave?
LD
user136984
Because the previous one said 76 not upgraded so it looks like your system is pretty out-of-date.

13:22
I think you've broken your system by trying to install KDE.
sorry that needsd to be sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/kde-config-telepathy-accounts_4%3a15.12.3-0ubuntu1_amd64‌‌.deb
user136984
Have you tried to install or remove any other desktops?

@ParanoidPanda yes Gnome3
user136984
Did you install gdm?
and also kde finished with same error
@ParanoidPanda u mean kde
user136984
13:24
Ok, as a rule, do not try to install desktop environments on Ubuntu, you will just get a broken system where you won't even be able to remove them properly.
user136984
@Sara: No, I mean GDM, it's what GNOME depends on.
user136984
LightDM is what Unity depends on.
user136984
And I assume that KDM is what KDE depends on.
gnome will work with either lightdm or gdm - tested
user136984
13:25
@ElderGeek: Ok, maybe depends on is the wrong word, however have you ever tried to remove lightdm and install gdm on a system?
user136984
Or any other DM for that matter?
user136984
If you have you will know that this completely messes up the system and is very hard to undo.
remove no, switch between yes
user136984
Well, I have tried to install gdm on a system with lightdm and that worked really badly, especially when I tried to remove either.
user136984
This whole area of switching DEs and DMs I would say is a risky one.
user136984
13:27
Things could easily go wrong if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
user136984
@Sara: The best thing to do is to install a flavour and stick with it, don't try to install or remove any desktop environments or display managers. Otherwise you get problems like you are experiencing.
@ElderGeek i can not install anything in terminal
DE's not so much, DM's I agree - but as you say "Things could easily go wrong if you don't know exactly what you're doing." and as I say "It's only daqngerous if you don't backup"
Are you still getting lock errors @Sara
user136984
Well, when I tries to install GNOME on a Unity system let's just say things didn't go too well...
computer@computer-Inspiron-N5010:~$ sudo debsums -c 2>&1 | cut -d " " -f 4 | sort -u | xargs -rd '\n' -- dpkg -S | cut -d : -f 1 | sort -u | xargs -rd '\n' -- sudo apt-get install --reinstall

13:29
Especially when I tried to remove Unity, now that was my big mistake! :D
user136984
In my experience KDE and Unity also don't go very well together, both try to take too much control of the system and it doesn't end well.
user136984
It's also hard to remove them.
Not a big KDE fan.... Reminds me of Windoze...
@Sara do you have a recent backup?
From before everything went south?
user136984
If you want another DE then just pick one from the official flavours list and do a fresh install, I would advise you never try to install or remove one yourself on a system which already has another installed.
13:32
@ElderGeek no i don't know how to get backup in ubuntu i was win user
user136984
Of course if you want a flavours which is not on the official list then support here will no longer be provided.
user136984
@Sara: You just zip up your files you want to keep and move them onto a USB, in terms of that the UI is very similar to Windows.
@ParanoidPanda i can not install anything because i getting unable error
user136984
Or any file manager that is.
@Sara I would agree with @ParanoidPanda on this. Backup any important data while booted from the live media
user136984
13:34
@Sara: So my advice at this point would be to do a fresh install and then not to attempt to install any DEs or DMs in the future.
@ParanoidPanda do u mean reinstall ubuntu
@Sara Yes he does
user136984
Yes
If you want KDE - Install Kubuntu
@ElderGeek @ParanoidPanda would u plz to give me an advise to not reinstall ubuntu
user136984
13:36
Sorry, but it's going to be very difficult to fix your system at this point and it seems you may have landed yourself in dependency hell or similar so a fresh install would be the best thing to do.
user136984
Just backup all your data and reinstall.
user136984
I can't really help you much further.
user136984
Sorry.
now the problem is the software like GIMP how can i get them backup
i downloaded them with disaster
with terrible internet speed
@Sara If you had sked me previously I would have advised backing up prior to the additional desktop environment installation attempt.
@Sara gimp will come with the kubuntu installation image as I recall
user136984
13:38
@ElderGeek: I need to get on with some other stuff now, but you should be able to instruct upon how to get archived .deb files from the system.
I don't have a lot of faith in those archived debs...
user136984
Nor do I, they might have corruption in them too so I wouldn't back them up if we're looking at possible corruption etc.
user136984
But they should be in /var/cache/apt/archives/.
user136984
Perhaps Mr Backup @Fabby can lend a hand? ;)
error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/kde-config-telepathy-accounts_4%3a15.12.3-0ubuntu1_amd64‌.deb
13:40
I was reading what this was about....
user136984
@Fabby: It's funny! I keep looking at your profile picture small and thinking it is a beautiful purple landscape with a waterfall and river and everything! :D
It's a pic of me with my helmet sticking out of my encounter suit!
@Sara the intelligent thing to do is reinstall.
@Fabby It appears we have some serious corruption after a failed attempt to add a DE
Back up your documents; videos, music, ...
user136984
Aww... Why was this downvoted? :(
13:43
then re-install. If you have terrible Internet speed go buy the cheapest coffee at Starbucks.

If you are having trouble with the current system you can backup when booted from the live media
----^ What he said
user136984
I would ask more questions there about things I don't know in Java if the response wasn't so negative. I'd have probably learnt a lot more in fact.
Hey @Fabby, nice to see you once again!
@ParanoidPanda If I had to guess I'd say lack of reseach....
13:44
How is life going?
@ParanoidPanda upgoated
user136984
@ElderGeek: I'm just really bad at research, and I'm using a really bad search engine too which doesn't help... I searched for these things but didn't find anything!
Yeah, just dropping by...
@ParanoidPanda It's just a guess.. (wasn't me) ;-)
Last week was OK, all the weeks before were 12-16h work days, not counting the DR tests on Sundays and migrations on Labour day... @ByteCommander
13:46
I need coffee. Back l8r
user136984
@Fabby Thanks! :)
You're not a terrible researcher, you're just lazy... >:-)
user136984
@ElderGeek: So do I! I haven't had one in months (I ran out and have only been drinking green tea)! :D
user136984
@Fabby: Well, that and not knowing what to search for. :P
user136984
13:47
I did do a search on SO first...
@Rinzwind You've always been legendary!
@Fabby but I can not prove it >:=D
:D :D :D
Oli is still on 142 :-X He has been a long time
Do you at least get your extra hours paid well?
13:49
Nope...
fabby
what is wrong with this
With what?
8
A: Can I share MySql database files with Windows on dual boot?

RinzwindYes, it works but with some quirks. MySQL uses the same fileformats across platforms so all you need is to share the data directory. One problem is that the data directory need to have mysql as owner and group in ubuntu. And Windows is case-insensitive and Linux is case-sensitive so keep all name...

1st command does not work :X
sudo mv /var/lib/mysql /dev/{sdXN}/mysql_data
Reqding
what does this need to be :X
it worked on a non-ubuntu (unix) system _O-
13:50
@Rinzwind What is that supposed to do?
A device file is no directory.
copy mysql database to a device
thing is
I stole it from a UF post _O- _O-
But a block device is like a file, not like a directory?
my now-me does not get the 5 year old newby me
it needs to be a mv to a dir :P
Yeah, mount the device somewhere, e.g. at /mnt, and then mv to /mnt/wherever
@Rinzwind: very good. moving the MySQL takes care of the Windows privileges. easier then chattr and shit.
13:54
it this better
?
I mount mine in /home/mysql @ByteCommander
I made it into a {mountpoint}
is that better?
As long as it isn't in /dev...
I agree ---^
fine fine fine
there :D
I hate editting 5 year old mistakes :P
13:56
Got to shut down, there's a lot of stuff to tidy up here and I won't get it done with the chat window open.
Seeya.
Ciao
@Rinzwind no bye
I aint going
oy.
@ByteCommander bye
13:57
better :=)
good that downvote got canned :=D
I have trouble finding good questions to answer :(
It's the weekend.
even so :P
@ParanoidPanda I on the other hand am out of green tea...
user136984
14:08
I really do like green tea, it's just that I also have a coffee addiction. :P
does the mini iso install grub? or is that manual work afterwards?
I haven't used it in a while, but I think it installs (bios-only,) grub.
cool
it askes for it it seems
I stopped playing with it when everything I have became uefi, but that's my memory.
14:24
I found a sort of interesting question to answer, wrote a fairly useless script for it, then steeldriver showed up (before I posted anything) to say "you can use rsync like this", rendering my script really useless XD
your mistake :=D
Doesn't matter, I had fun :)
@Rinzwind See the edit I made to celtic warrior's answer. It confirms this model does not have duplex.
ah cool
@chaskes Shaemus is here?
14:31
changed the comment @chaskes :D
@jokerdino um, not getting the reference...
@Rinzwind :)
There is a professional wrestler Sheamus, who is fondly called the Celtic Warrior.
Oh, ok. ;)
@jokerdino So he paints himself blue and wrestles naked?
No and no.
14:51

Does anyone know how to set the selected row in a JTable?
user136984
I can get the value of the currently selected one, but there does not seem to be a method to actually set which one is selected.
@Anwar was it me? Sara was here talking about problems with multiple DEs, and everyone was telling her it was a bad idea, just install the flavor with the DE you want...
Yes. that one.
I didn't read the Q either, so idk, I just thought of you
I would say install multiple DEs to experiment and then go back to the one you liked most. or use them with some problems here and there
thanks @ElderGeek :)
No Probalem @Zanna
Multi-DE was particularly problematic in older days. But I think it is lot less now.
15:09
Actually there was so much corruption there were not a lot of choices
I don't think that the root cause was the multiple DE's per se, she had multiple failed attempts.
@Anwar You're correct, I would say. It's a lot better, but I find whenever I mix them I still end up frustrated eventually. I generally use fresh partitions instead.
user136984
@chaskes: Thanks! :)
Right, her case was completely different. She was having trouble reaching the repositories. Had nothing to do with DE's really.
Not to mention unexplained dpkg locks...
Particularly KDE doesn't play well with other DEs. but a Unity with Gnome-Shell + LXDE + XFCE would not result in horrible experience
15:13
@ParanoidPanda I got to relearn my java for work (unused since 1.5), so it was a welcome refresher!
Corrupt .deb files in the archives that dissappeared when removal attempts were made..
Yeah it seems to be repo issue with her but I just thought everyone saying the whole idea is a no no deserved a second opinion
I think mixing KDE with others is a lot better than it was in the past.
Perhaps I'll try it someday. I never really cared for the KDE interface though.
I think her problem is sudo apt-get update
It seems she didn't run that command
15:15
Once KDE hit 5.5 it really won me over. I have kubuntu (on a separate partition from unity)
or did she?
@Anwar yes I think so, it was a bit confusing
It's not apparent though. Did she say it?
Because I have only 1 explanation for that.
Since they can fetch other files from the same archive, there should be not block..
@Anwar it was pretty early on. I'll find it
^ where?
They said 'I used'. I can be when the added the repository. but not after the package file is replaced in the repo
or may be a temporary problem? ...
user136984
15:29
@chaskes: I've seen a really nice looking KDE screenshot of the desktop, but when I installed KDE, not only did the installer break halfway through and corrupt things, but also the bottom bar and default profile picture looked awful.
user136984
Also, way too many settings. Do they even have a mode where they only show normal (what other DEs tend to show) settings?
I haven't had those problems with installation, but: 1) the profile pictures are in fact the worst ever and 2) their approach to settings is way too cluttered. (Although, some would reply that at least they aren't removing settings for the ultra-minimal another famous DE seems to be creating.)
Just under 12:29pm time mark @Anwar
She said " i used
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/hexchat-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install hexchat
...."
@ElderGeek hmm... I'm not sure either. Did they do it when they messaged? I mean after the question is asked?
@Anwar I couldn't say for certain. I know it was suggested.
@ParanoidPanda ?
@Anwar most recent attempt at that was just under 8:13 - not sure how I missed that before...
Time to go. I must mow
15:51
hmm. Then I think there is some blocking based on package name
'engine' might have triggered the filter :P
maybe you are going to fix her problem @Anwar apt-wizard ^_^
but I'm confused as well now
since they did sudo apt-get update!
I think I found something new
I was trying to reach that deb file ir.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/…
@ElderGeek haha I wish I had some grass... :)
try to fetch that file. sometimes it works, sometimes doesn't!
seems to work ok right now for me

yes. working now
