Ok, as a rule, do not try to install desktop environments on Ubuntu, you will just get a broken system where you won't even be able to remove them properly.

If you want another DE then just pick one from the official flavours list and do a fresh install, I would advise you never try to install or remove one yourself on a system which already has another installed.

A: Can I share MySql database files with Windows on dual boot?

Yes, it works but with some quirks. MySQL uses the same fileformats across platforms so all you need is to share the data directory. One problem is that the data directory need to have mysql as owner and group in ubuntu. And Windows is case-insensitive and Linux is case-sensitive so keep all name...

Also, way too many settings. Do they even have a mode where they only show normal (what other DEs tend to show) settings?

I haven't had those problems with installation, but: 1) the profile pictures are in fact the worst ever and 2) their approach to settings is way too cluttered. (Although, some would reply that at least they aren't removing settings for the ultra-minimal another famous DE seems to be creating.)
