01:37
awesome!
I want a new tshirt
my old tshirts from UDS are looking a bit faded
@JorgeCastro are you getting many good answers from bountying questions?
sometimes
I've gotten enough good ones that I always keep 3 bounties going
@ajmitch ok, I'm in, for this AU lens
did you just pull the branch and then ... what?
01:53
pulled the branch, ran 'debuild', watched unity get killed off
you could use the package from the PPA
nice
what ppa?
look at the branch, it has a recipe attached
you can follow that to the PPA
01:55
I prefer building stuff myself anyway, I think that you're still going to run into problems if you hit the pygobject bug
comment out the last line in setup.py if you're going to build it yourself
is it working? :)
I'm going to make a minor change to it...
Creates local copy of the branch...
02:13
Given that /usr/lib/unity-lens-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon segfaults on starting for me, I think we need a fixed unity
@ajmitch Quick question...
I've locally committed a change to the lens.
Where should I push it (so that the author can merge the changes)?
whereever you feel like?
probably to lp:~georgeedison/askubuntu-lens/my-branch-name-goes-here
replace name & branch name where appropriate
@ajmitch Now what would the best way of letting him know about the changes?
File a bug?
02:16
were you changing the data source for it?
...or email him directly?
let who know?
stefano?
Well.. actually I was thinking of the other guy who set up the dail build, etc.
Here's all I changed:
you could set up your own recipe if you wanted
It basically load-balances between the two services.
02:18
I figured you'd probably add that
please please please please don't hard code IP addresses in applications
that goes for @StefanoPalazzo, too :)
I didn't - mine is using a domain name.
I mean it in a general sense - I'd like one day to be able to use NAT64 & DNS64 at home & not use ipv4 addresses internally ;)
I should probably file a bug about it then
Should I file a bug to get my branch merged?
02:20
no, a merge proposal is better for that
I don't like "load-balancing" by use of random()
Ah, how do I do that?
it just feels very wrong
Nvm - I found the "propose for merging" link.
Don't mind me, I'm just a critic :)

Q: How to make apt-get accept New config files in a unattended install of debian from Repo

RamanI am writing a script for a unattended install of a package that is in our Repo, It is a Software Package with one of the Debians marked config. Is there any option that I can pass to apt-get/aptitude so that it accepts the new Config Files. Basically I need a apt/aptitude equivalent of dpkg ...

02:35
Whew... I almost forgot to update the DNS record for that subdomain.
There... fixed.
02:50
nice!
ok tomorrow we need to bug stefano to merge all that stuff into trunk
right, just updated the LP lens for the new API, though it won't work
@JorgeCastro did you get the lens working at all?
trying it now
I'll be surprised if you do
I'll grab the pygobject code & throw that patch at it
looks like it loads
doesn't return results though
you'll find that unity-askubuntu-daemon is segfaulting (well, python is)
02:55
ah
do you have that python bug handy?
the one for lenses?
yeah
Python lenses segfault with the new pygobject3 when the daemon is started.
unity
Critical / In Progress
I'm just patching pygobject & pushing it to my PPA now
woo!
/me salivates
be patient...
building it locally first to test that I applied the patch properly before I actually dput & push it to launchpad
/me can wait
I was hoping didrocks would cherry pick the fix
but he's just going to publish it all in SRU1
the patch is against pygobject though
I don't want to touch the bug without knowing what they do with those ones :)
03:05
oh right
ugh man, I hope it's not too invasive
I can see pitti totally dropping the hammer on it
though, not having python lenses not work in unity is a pretty big bug.
it didn't appear to be too bad
still a 9k patch though
hm, it may be in 2 parts, one against gobject-introspection as well
hah
this is how it starts
nope, 1st patch of 2 is just changing test cases, the latter patch is the one which I pushed to the PPA
it's a race to see which builds it first - launchpad or my laptop
allison is filing a few more bugs for submitted ARB apps today
@JorgeCastro want to ship me a faster laptop, say one with an SSD?

If I were to install only Google Chrome and VLC Media Player over the default Ubuntu install, and have a separate partition for my data. What's the smallest size I can allot to my Ubuntu partition (/)?
3-4 gigs maybe?
2.6gb is what my brand new install takes
and that's with Chrome
so maybe 3ish gigs to be safe?

@JorgeCastro Thanks! :)

Q: The "emphasis" symbol in the editor design issue.

DoR As you can see in the screenshot above, there is a small, light grey line to the right of the "Emphasis" icon in the editor. That shouldn't be there, right?

Crap, this bug is back.
@JorgeCastro it's not like it can't be resubmitted once it's confirmed to be working properly
03:23
yeah
you don't want to rush it in, especially as it has to be reviewed & checked that it works :)
/me nods
VMs are great for that, unity seems to work OK in virtualbox
@ajmitch not having that lens while AU has been it's busiest is basically like chopping my legs off
I have been like an addict without crack
the code is really quite simple too
heh
you've managed well enough without it :)
did you use the lens that much in natty?
03:25
yeah
every day
well actually, with the site being so popular now
it'd be a nice win-win, tell users, install this
everytime you want to figure something out, type it in there
sort of like built in unity help
And we'd find out how well my server stands up to the traffic :)

Q: Is there a way I can block a folder from Gnome and/or Unity search?

Paolo SanchezI sometimes browse erotic media files, and I have some of them stored in my hard drive. All said content is saved in one specific folder. Is there a way I can block this folder from Gnome and/or Unity search? I've heard 'use a separate user', but that won't work, as the files will still be in...

hahaha, awesome
Wow +1 for admitting to it.
03:28
heh
@GeorgeEdison ok remind me, this pings your server and marco's server?
your new branch I mean
I must have hit a slow PPA builder, it's still unpacking build dependencies
lp conspires against us
my local build is pretty much done
@JorgeCastro It pings both equally.
@ajmitch toss me a deb somewhere pls!
03:30
> if random.random() > 0.5:
^---- "load balancing"
@GeorgeEdison and if one or both are down?
@JorgeCastro what arch?
@JorgeCastro It falls back to the actual API if the request fails.
ah, so it's totally clever. :)
so what about the idea of shipping the data from the dump as part of it?
03:32
fully untested, built on my laptop
@JorgeCastro Oh yeah... that's getting more tricky now.
They're only releasing the dumps quarterly now.
oh, sucky. :(
Here's what I'm thinking...
@ajmitch hells yeah! that works!
Since the optimized binary format is only... hang on...
03:36
@JorgeCastro yup, lens works for me
Does it have my patch?
should I confirm on the bug report too that it works?
now I need to try out the LP lens as well
@GeorgeEdison nope, I was patching pygobject
@JorgeCastro sure
Oh yeah.
oh lol
he put the different SEs under filters
I would have put the tags there
03:37
With .tar.gz compression, the binary index file is 1.1 MB currently.
2.5 MB uncompressed.
@JorgeCastro yeah, probably something for stefano to decide :)
@GeorgeEdison well, if the hosted thing ends up working better ....
@GeorgeEdison maybe updating the local stuff 4 times a year isn't so bad if it saves hitting the network?
I might appreciate that when travelling or on 3g
sadly I can't really rely on hosted stuff for searching LP, but I at least know the right people to bug about LP being slow :)
@JorgeCastro Right.
ah man
I had forgotten how much the search sucks on the vanilla lens
03:40
The AU Data Server is using 19.8 MB of memory - after making 5924 API requests.
@GeorgeEdison ok I pulled the code for yours
how do I run it?
@JorgeCastro vanilla lens? how much did you hack it up to suit you?
You mean the branch with the changes to the lens?
the branch you made to that guy's thing
yeah, with your server magic on it
03:41
Yeah, it's identical (getting it running).
well, he had a ppa
Oooh. You want a binary package? :)
setting up a recipe & a PPA for the branch is actually really really easy on LP now :)
...or the branch URL?
@ajmitch George and stefano made it so that it hits their hosted servers and does search magic so the results aren't as slow and don't suck
@GeorgeEdison I have the branch URL and pulled it
03:42
@ajmitch I know - I've got all kinds of my programs set up to use recipes.
oh wait, there's a debian dir there
@JorgeCastro right, this is what I said initially about running debuild :)
@JorgeCastro Yeah, try running debuild in that directory.
ii unity-lens-launchpad 0.0.2 Lense for Unity integration with launchpad.net
need to see if that one works now
/me installs a bunch of deps
wow!
never seen a debuild crash my window manager before!
03:48
remember what I said about commenting out the last line of setup.py?
where it deliberately restarts unity, for some reason? :)
heh
now I do
I was a little surprised when unity disappeared on me as well :)
ok done
@GeorgeEdison ok, I should be hitting your server now
I don't see anything yet...
I was having some DNS issues earlier.
/me keeps trying
03:54
What IP address is audata.quickmediasolutions.com resolving to?
It should be 96.248.216.98.
@JorgeCastro so if this pygobject fix takes awhile to make it into -updates, do you think we should promote a PPA in order to get this available?
we could just stick it in the AU PPA
What does pointing your browser at this result in?
03:55
and then people to use the PPA until it's in -updates, then just push the lens into extras?
@GeorgeEdison I see some JSON looking results
@JorgeCastro Yup, that showed up on the server.
That's odd...
Can you see what the lens is printing to the console?
@JorgeCastro fair enough
(I think it's supposed to print a mesage indicating which server it's using.)
03:56
hopefully we can actually get some stuff into extras without having to wait until after UDS
how do I run the lens right from the source?
you can just run /usr/lib/unity-lens-askubuntu/unity-askubuntu-daemon
aha, got it
it's using api.askubuntu.com
Uh-oh :(
Sounds like an exception is getting raised somewhere...
We really need @StefanoPalazzo...
should I comment out everything but your site?
would that work?
04:00
You could try that.
On second thought... seems like something should get printed on the console when an exception is raised... weird...
It's working!
did that work?
I searched for unity keyboard shortcuts
Yup - that worked.
oh man
your results are so much better it's not even funny
just faster?
04:04
no
it returns better results
instead of the built in horrible SE search
I wonder why the load balancing is failing...
oh man this is so nice dude!
I've done quite a few searches and it's pretty accurate
Don't forget there's a web front-end here people can try out too: askubuntu.quickmediasolutions.com
04:10
ah, it returns closed duplicates sometimes
do a search for "change font size"
Hmmm... I need to figure out if it's possible to fix that.
actually, just "change font" will do it
ok this is awesome dude, thanks
/me heads to bed
night @JorgeCastro

04:36
anyone home?
of course
hey. are you using Ocelot?
When you click the home folder launcher on the unity bar, does nautilus open?
yes, it does
04:41
i get a segmentation fault. i opened nautilus via zsh, and this is what I encounter.
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension
** (nautilus:4641): DEBUG: SyncDaemon already running, initializing SyncdaemonDaemon object

(nautilus:4641): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_action_set_visible: assertion `GTK_IS_ACTION (action)' failed
zsh: segmentation fault nautilus
remove nautilus-open-terminal
or you can keep it, and install an updated ubuntuone-client-gnome from oneiric-proposed
yeah. removing it worked. OO still buggy though. eg: banging my mouse cursor on the left of the screen doesn't bring up the unity bar. i have to minimize all windows, and then the bar appears.
@KaustubhP same with me
@CaptNemo Hey. So is there any workaround that you have made? Or is it minimize and use? Also, when you press the Meta key, to bring up the unity launcher panel, what happens?
Does the transparent panel show up?
I switched to gnome shell long time ago
However, the transparent panel did work
04:53
I guess I should do too.
Actually, the Unity bar is there, its just not visible. I was clicking on a pinned tab in Chromium, and Nautilus opened. Which suggests what I said above.
^yes that happened as well with me
Er... what do I do here?

Q: Apt-get update with an @ in password error

it would remain forever in edit history not matter what, so just leave it ?

@CaptNemo Actually, mods. can purge it from the edit history, IIRC.
i didn't know that. Still the question said "For eg" now, so its not really the pwd by my guess

A: How do I install Pencil?

Capt.NemoAddon Install You can install the xpi file as a Firefox addon. To do this, drag the xpi file from your documents to Firefox. It should show a popup asking you about installing the package.

xulrunner package is missing in 11.10
where should i report this?

Q: Best practices to ease the OS upgrade procedure

GuandalinoI'm going to install a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS), supported until April 2013. My question is about the upgrade to the new LTS version, and in particular I'd like to know which best practices I have to adopt to reduce potential upgrade issues when 12.04 will be released. For example, don't install...

I havent ever upgraded LTS
@CaptNemo Good idea, but I don't think it's really necessary.
10:08
hi all
Hey, nice to see you!
morning
How can I sync Thunderbird with my Google Apps contacts?
@Greg Using the Google Contacts plugin for Thunderbird I guess.
@OctavianDamiean oh there's no way to do it like a usual LDAP server? It needs a special plugin?
10:19
Can you answer this? How can I build an installer by tracking filesystem changes? http://askubuntu.com/questions/68412/how-can-i-build-an-installer-by-tracking-filesystem-changes #installation
I guess that plugin will do the job, just seems a bit odd that Thunderbird includes contact synchronisation as a standard feature
10:32
Welcome to AskUbuntu! As it stands, your question may need a little more information in order for it to be answered. If you are not technically savvy don't worry, just add as much information as you can, so that you can get an answer (and a good one at that).

@RolandTaylor me? no way!
i like my soul :D
@StefanoPalazzo hi
U1 is getting on my nerves a bit. It's syncing "md2.py and 1940 other files" for two days now :\ the first 8000 files synced fine
hi @StefanoPalazzo
@htorque what do you have to do with your soul?
@RolandTaylor that's really good!
@RolandTaylor all that power, must be a devil thing!
10:48
@StefanoPalazzo what is :P?
@htorque God is stronger than the devil.... :> muhahaha

I added it to meta :)
mods never lose their mod status, right?
@htorque no. I guess, if there are extraordinary circumstances, they can

if there are moderator elections any time soon, there's no way you're not elected
I am considering taking a run for mod

@StefanoPalazzo yw, but there is one way: i'm not running for mod. :P
I'd vote for you (:
