I wonder why the moderator flags are this good

Q: How can I set that Alt-TAB switches only actual desktop windows (not all ones) used Unity in 11.10?

RegiszHow can I set that Alt-TAB switches only actual desktop windows (not all ones) used Unity in 11.10? I set a plugin for it in compiz manager, but it could not solve my problem. Thx!

dupe?
nearly every single one of them is a delete or worse
all want the marshal badge now that we got a push from the installer :P
19 points to go. too bad that's still ~100 flags. :D
11:27
no more flags
for a minute :)

Can anyone recommend a screen recorder?
@Greg gtk-recordmydesktop works really well for me
@StefanoPalazzo does it record portions of the screen? Can I set it to only record a specific region?
yes you can
cool, I'll check it out
I recommend to use openshot as well, it can convert the file into something that nicely uploads to youtube
11:42
@StefanoPalazzo!!!
hi @Jorge :)
I am now running that guy's port of the AU lens!
it needs a pygobject fix, but ajmitch gave me a .deb
I see! I couldn't get it to work
your pygobject is broken I bet
Python lenses segfault with the new pygobject3 when the daemon is started.
unity
Critical / In Progress
that's it
fantastic
11:44
ajmitch made a deb!
anyway, the guy ported it, and then george made it so it uses his server
and the matching is totally great
so, when will this fix land in ubuntu?
as soon as possible
so what we were thinking
until then
(since it has to be an SRU)
we can put the fixed python in the PPA
and then we can bang on the entire thing for a while
then when the fix lands in ubuntu itself
THEN we submit the lens to the software center
that'll give us time to tweak it, etc.
right, so, after markjtully has merged George's branch, I'll merge markjtully's, and then have the recipe build that
meanwhile this fix will go into a ppa and be added as a dependency to the lens?
what does this mean in the software centre? Dependency is not satisfiable: python-gnome2-extras
11:48
we can just copy the python into the PPA for now
huh?
@Greg it sounds like it's looking for python-gnome2-extras and can't find it
@JorgeCastro yeah, how do I get it?
Teester's code is really nice too. my hero <3
I will add ajmitch to the lp team
so he can push that python into the PPA
11:51
@JorgeCastro is my AU search server broken? It seems to work fine from a browser
either it doesn't work
or the load balancing doesn't work
but george's server worked
by itself
investigation needed
oh good
I would've been annoyed if it failed, it's been running for months on end :)
well, I'm not sure
also
mark put the seperate stackexchanges in the filter
which I think is wrong (and looks ugly)
I think the tags for the site should go on the filter
since it's a .... filter
um. how do I subscribe to a merge proposal?
it looks like George put in a random choice of either my search server or his, not only one of them
12:07
What are the requirements to run for moderator? I mean are there reputation restrictions like on SO?
@OctavianDamiean > any community member in good standing with more than 300 reputation may nominate themselves to be a community moderator.
"good standing" probably means they a) reserve the right to remove your nominations and b) you mustn't be suspended :D
feels dumb because he knows that this must be written in some obvious place
see, you don't qualify if you don't know where to find that information :D
(just kidding, just kidding!)
why all this talk about elections, are there news about another one coming up? Because that would be brilliant
That was exactly what I was thinking. :D
I have no idea who started the discussion. I just joined it.
Like a sheep.
12:11
well,
moderation works great at the moment. But of course two more can't hurt, especially since we've got awesome candidates
@StefanoPalazzo he just made it randomly pick one for poor man's load balancing
@JorgeCastro nothing wrong with that. it's fair and zero overhead
we could start a discussion on meta about getting two more mods. if that goes well, we can ask the team to run another election. Definitely possible. But I suggest we wait until the 11.10 frenzy is over
today doesn't feel so bad
only 3 pages of questions needed editing when I woke up
13:16
I think now that there are all three moderators on deck it won't be so bad to keep up
we're doing well today :)

@Trufa You sure you don't want to go to Unix and Linux SE?
This is what I got when I ran it with with --debug
gist: 1295503, 2011-10-18 14:07:05Z
@Oxwivi I hadn't really considered it, I don't know if it is an accurate idea but I have the impression that unix&linux.SE is more for unix general problems rahter that day to day stuff like updating and such
But I could be totally mistaken
i have the impression that ask ubuntu is more for ubuntu general problems rather than arch specific ones :P
user image
2
just kidding ;-)
@Trufa Well, I get that impression as well, but AU considers anything other than Ubuntu off-topic.
Yeah, if it's a general issue, then there's no problem as far as I can see.
@htorque :) lol
there's a general linux stackexchange for non-ubuntu distros
(and ubuntu is also on topic there)
14:15
@Trufa I reread the issue you described, I'm reasonably sure that it's going to fit in to Linux and Unix SE.
@Oxwivi cool :)
I'll ask there

Q: Creating a local in-house testing web server

Thomas ClaysonWhat we are trying to achieve is to have an in house Linux-based (probably Ubuntu) web server which we can test on before pushing to our remote dedicated hosting server. One bad things about unix & linux. SE is I think the exposure is much smaller than on AU.
@Trufa It really is, unfortunately
@MarcoCeppi Yep... you get used to the really fast answers in SE...
I'm willing to bet we're right around number 4 on the "most-popular-site-o-meter" in the SE network
@MarcoCeppi Can I post here too after a while? Should I delete my question there? how long should I wait?
16:29
@Trufa Your question is about Arch it just won't fly on AU
@MarcoCeppi ohh that's a pity
@MarcoCeppi well, I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer or ask in the Arch Linux forums.
or ask arch people to use linux.se
You could always install Ubuntu :"D
2
any distro could use linux.se for support
@MarcoCeppi hehe
16:50
Good, now the only result I get is me asking :)
that better be a pretty stable kernel :D
@htorque When did Kernel.org come back online?
@MarcoCeppi This week.
Is kernel.com a part of the linux family?
@MarcoCeppi i think two weeks or so, but they aren't completely back.
still shows "mainline: 3.1-rc4"
@MarcoCeppi doesn't look like it is :D
17:05
heh, yeah was about to say :P
EH?
where did the imgur stuff go?
The earliest news of kernel.org being back online is Oct 4 (according to my feeds), sorry it seems I messed up my sense of time.
it seems to just recommend free imaging solutions
you can no longer upload right?
17:06
and i thought there was something wrong on my end

Q: What's wrong with Imgur? Why can't I upload any images?

Soner GönülImgur is having some trouble I guess. I can't upload any images on Stack Exchange. It looks they have some maintenance issues.

aaha!
i heard they lost all images...
just kidding :P
@htorque Maybe we could hack up some script to retrieve them from Google Caches?
(In case it ever happens)
or we'll get a "fixed 100 broken imgur links" gold badge :D
2
@Oxwivi StackExchange has a backup of every image ever uploaded via the Stack Exchange image uploader interface. They will never be lost.
<3 redundancy
17:24
the built in imgur thing is like my 2nd favorite feature
it's so nice to just use Shutter and directly upload
@MarcoCeppi Really???
I didn't realize that.
you know something I realized this weekend
we have some retarded tags
2
Q: How can I create launchers on my desktop?

tinuzIn older versions it was easy to create a launcher on my desktop all i had to do is right click on my desktop and select the create launcher option. But on 11.10 the option disappeared from the menu.. How can I get it back?

"create"
really.
there was one I saw the other day that made me laugh out loud it was so ridiculous
Also, I think I am going to start writing clever poems when I flag dupes
It looks like if you just do a tag edit it won't bump the question anymore.
@JorgeCastro I've always enjoyed your dupe flags so far
I think I will try to get more creative
are the dupe reasons private? (mod only?)
or are they recorded somewhere
They're private. I think mods+10k can see it.
17:31
perfect, mwahahaha.
@MarcoCeppi it does get bumped, it's just slow
see the front page, heh

@GeorgeEdison Nothing special there.
Posted by Alison Sperling on October 18th, 2011

Peter Grace joins Stack Exchange as Sysadmin in the NYC Headquarters, expanding the System Administration team to 3 people.  George, Kyle and Pete are working hard to make sure our growing sites continue to make the internet a better place.

Pete has been married to his lovely wife Kristy for eight years and they have two sons Nate, 3 and Ben, 1.  An avid gardener, Pete has successfully grown pumpkins, radishes, cucumbers, swiss chard, snow peas and more.  In his spare time, Pete enjoys playing computer games and guns with George. …

What do you mean?
@GeorgeEdison Well, those are just remixes of existing wallpapers, which I didn't find interesting. Just my opinion.

@Oxwivi the Americas board.
@jrg Yeah, I was kind of avoiding it too. Though might as well throw my hat in as I'm applying with @jrg to the America's board
18:58
@jrg "...I strongly dislike Pi. I'm also known to go off in tangents..." I see the subtle humor there :P
brave people
jrg

@JorgeCastro awesome, thanks
jrg
jrg
HEY. We should make this thursday night "Ask Ubuntu spams the Americas board" night. :)
@MarcoCeppi oh, 9th in line? i'm not sure that will work.
19:01
@MarcoCeppi for a sec there I thought you were applying for a place on the board itself :)
good luck though :-)
@ajmitch He'd have surely made it. XD
@MarcoCeppi: You speak Italian too?
@JorgeCastro No, not yet. I must do it next time, now that I'm a bit less busy than I was last month. It should be a little more than two weeks from now if memory serves
@StefanoPalazzo or you can merge that guy's work so we can have the PPA working today!
19:03
@JorgeCastro I think I should fix up the version in the changelog before I upload it, since an SRU will be versioned lower than the .deb I created
won't take long
Question.... what is this: keyserver.ubuntu.com
what am I thinking? :D
I can just merge the two branches, without waiting for either.
@StefanoPalazzo we never know :)
right, the responsibility lies on your shoulders :)
YEAH!
merge that badboy
and of course, add that guy to the team so he can just fix it on his own
19:04
that guy looks to have been added to the team
@GeorgeEdison Holds all the PPA PGP/GPG keys and a bunch of other keys for Ubuntu
what do i need to do to get a patch in a source package updated? i reported a bug months ago but nobody seems to care. :-(
@JorgeCastro yeah I've added him today
@StefanoPalazzo merge merge merge!
@htorque link me up
@MarcoCeppi Yeah, but it provides space for "adding a key".
What's that all about?
I feel like I should test before merging :D I'll do it anyway.
@GeorgeEdison You can upload your personal key to the server
@GeorgeEdison You can do it from seahorse as well
Binary package hint: ureadahead The patch "0001-trace-add-trace-events-for-open-exec-an.patch" cannot be applied to current kernels, please update it.
ureadahead (Ubuntu)
Undecided / New
@htorque is that something to apply to kernels, or ureadahead?
19:08
kernel
right, getting changes in there is a little different
but it's part of the ureadahead source for people that build their own kernels
I see, how messy
@htorque post to the ubuntu kernel mailing list perhaps?
Hi!
19:11
or IRC, actually, they prefer IRC
kernel is fine, as ureadahead is working. :-) it's just an outdated file in the package.

Q: How can I add more workspaces?

alanI have searched and read through other answers, but I couldn't find one. I can't change then number of workspaces. Compiz desktop size in general settings doesn't work. I've tried some gconf commands, but that doesn't work either.

quite similar to another question, but 11.10 requires that unity be restarted to get the extra workspaces...
an annoying thing that I found when checking my answer for the original question
it doesn't.
but sometimes compiz settings won't apply.
