jrg
@StefanoPalazzo Eek, sounds like we abuse the flag.
So precise...

I can only vouch for the ones I saw. But there wasn't a single invalid one among them

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo Wow.

isn't that brilliant?

jrg
Dangit @JorgeCastro, you beat me to updating the Ask Ubuntu unity lens question.

12:02 AM
@MarcoCeppi: I'm going to just sign George Edison and then you can edit it if need be.

ugh, it's 2 in the morning, and there's an episode of House that needs watching and a piece of lasagne that needs warming up. I best combine the two for maximum efficiency.
see you tomorrow everyone :)

@StefanoPalazzo thanks for updating that lens
it's AWESOME now

my absolute pleasure. all credit should go to Mark

It's going to get better once I get the data dump index packaged :)

12:12 AM
@JorgeCastro I should really get the new package name in before too many people install it

crap
I totally forgot about that dude

it's only a cosmetic change really
nothing to really worry about too much

12:33 AM
Time to play the upgrade game!

upgrading to precise already?

hah
@ajmitch I'll be doing server stuff this cycle
which means I can hold off all the way until at least A2 before going precise

Q: Are there mockups for the desktop-oriented Unity?

This question is under a spam attack.

@ajmitch Yeah, on my netbook

@JorgeCastro awesome, what server stuff are you doing?

12:41 AM
juju

nice
that looks like an interesting project
I might try & find some spare time to play with it

I keep wanting to use Juju, but I keep wanting it to be a Puppet replacement.

yeah it's not that

it'd be nice if juju could get into debian soon as well :)

I will work on the messaging better so it's not so confusing

12:43 AM
Yeah, I keep finding that out each time.

though I see that Spamaps is on irc now, he owns the debian ITP bug

I just can't personally fathom a use case for it yet to allow me to play with it

@ajmitch Yeah I plan on bugging him

I'm still lurking in #juju on irc & have been on the mailing list, just haven't spent much time on it :)

1:01 AM
@MarcoCeppi some spammers tonight, I flagged em

Yeah, I just plowed through the mod queue

PLOW
on the plus side I can fix the questions they bumped.

darn, I wanted to get my flag weight up a bit :)

Anyone alive in here?

no, we're all zombies

Oli

BRAINS!

Oh that is sad.
I was really hoping someone among the living would be able to help me.

ask anyway, the undead may be able to help still

Hello

Oli
Brains?

Here is my question.

Q: Installer does not see windows trying to dual boot.

TheXI am trying to install Ubuntu alongside windows. What I boot off the install media and run the installer I get to the patition selection window and it tells me that there are no other operating systems on the computer. I know there are, as I can restart and it will boot into windows also I can mo...

Oli
1:08 AM
@TheX Is it Windows 7 Stealth Edition?

Lol it must be.

Oli
And have you looked at the disk (from the LiveCD) with something like Gparted? Can it see the Windows partition?
And are you using RAID?

Yes.
I can mount it and see the documents too
No raid.
Unless you are talking about the bug killer I think I might have some of that in the garage.

odd
it's like they keep spamming the same questions

Sorry I didn't mean to be annoying.

1:12 AM
@JorgeCastro don't expect intelligence from spammers

Oli
@TheX Not you - somebody is spamming the site

Oh lol
That is good thought I was in trouble for a moment

@TheX only if your question is a duplicate

Oli
@TheX You might do best to manually shrink the Windows partition and then load up the installer and install into the free space. You'll have some fun and games when it comes to configuring GRUB (because it won't know to add an entry for Windows) and even then you might have to hit Windows with a hammer to get it booting. Just make sure you have some sort of boot CD for Windows too so you can rescue its boot sector if that gets knackered.

I think it's os-prober that is the package responsible for finding other operating systems

Oli
1:16 AM
I make it sound worse than it'll probably be. Resizing is simple. Telling GRUB what to do will be editing one file and running one command... It's only if it all goes wrong is when things get interesting :)

My luck = going wrong

@TheX you don't have a strangely named windows directory for W7, do you?
or a boot directory on the windows partition?

I will tell you in a second but I don't think so

Oli
And it's not too hard to fix if it does go pear-shaped... As long as you have some sort of rescue CD to restore the standard boot manager

My c drive is local disk
Gonna run check disk and see what happens.

1:20 AM
so there's no c:\boot\ or any unusual directories under c:\ ?
I'm just taking wild stabs in the dark based on existing bug reports

No not that I could tell

OK

Wow that was fast.

howdy fellas
I'm having an issue with pulseaudio

Salutations!

I'm trying to stream my audio to our 'jukebox'
so I grabbed papref
but the options "make local servers discoverable" is greyed out
in fact all of the options are

Oli
@TheX I wrote you an answer based on what I was saying earlier about doing it yourself. I'm sure there's a way to get os-prober to work but I don't know it.

I think last time I had to add myself to the 'audio' group
but I don't see groups being used at all anymore in gnome3

Oli
1:38 AM
I'd certainly wait a bit for a better answer.

or if they are I can't find it :/
any ideas?
thought it might be a simple issue before I create an ask topic

I responded to it oil.

Oli
I see the same in Gnome Classic. Looks like an issue between it and the new PulseAudio version.

Oli (stupid auto correct)

@TheX the output of sudo os-prober from the live cd would be interesting to see though

1:43 AM
@Oli I hope not, I love our sound server :(

Oli
@Shazzner Looking at its site, you might "just" need to update paprefs. The latest version 0.9.10 suggest it works better with any-old-version of PA, making previous versions sound brittle.

@Oli Thanks, I'll check it out

Oli
@Shazzner No, that didn't help
It might be a gconf issue
@Shazzner Anyway, yes, I think this might be be worth writing a question up.
But the workround in there doesn't work for me either.

2:01 AM
blast
ok I'll throw up a question

Geesh anyone else just have massive problems with chat?

yeah rebuilding papref didn't do anything :(
a-ha
the workaround did though

Oli
2:24 AM
@Shazzner That's odd - it did nothing for me
You mean sudo ln -s /usr/lib/pulse-1.0 /usr/lib/pulse-1.0.0?
Hmm, I purged my own-built version and then reinstalled from the repos (back to v0.9.9-3) and now it works with the workaround. Very odd.

3:14 AM
so many spam answers to flag today
at this rate I'll get a gold badge in a depressingly short amount of time

Oli
3:35 AM
It's a shame we can't blacklist phrases (eg write something as an unregistered/new user and it bans your IP for 24+ hours). That would deal with this in about 10 minutes.

right, anything that mentioned watches or wow gold

Oli
And it's not like watches and WoW gold are ever on-topic so it's never going to hurt a real user.
Plus a most of today's spam has come from one IP. I don't understand when there's this many issues with one IP, it isn't automagically blocked. I've written to the powers that be. Hopefully they'll respond with something helpful.

Oh man... QThreads make my head hurt.
Does this qualify as an "answer"?

And is it coming from the same IP address?
@JorgeCastro Lol... I've been doing that.

I dunno, I think they do that at a higher level than us
I think we just flag em

3:45 AM
@oli said most was from the same IP address

@JorgeCastro They do - it's a mod. tool.

I've been flagging a lot

@Oli: Don't forget that you have a "ban IP address" tool in the mod. tools.

Oli
@GeorgeEdison Not that I can see

Lemme find it...

3:47 AM
@GeorgeEdison but then I won't get my flag weight to 749 ;)

Me neither :P
Huh... the ban IP address tool is gone.

Q: Are we doomed to mirror lack of experts in larger WP ecosystem?

RarstOur answered rate is plummeting more and more obviously. I had trouble coming up with explanation, until I discovered in extended stats one metric that seems to correlate with it - how many new active users had appeared on site in last two weeks. We seem to be terrible at this. Closest site in...

whoa!
check us out!

Oli
We're in serious danger of being off the chart

4:08 AM
there's no hope for us
might as well close AU down now
78% is worrying
we've probably collected a lot of duplicates & just new questions since the release
140 questions/day - we're ahead of serverfault & superuser on that metric alone :)

4:21 AM
@ajmitch Those metrics are behind anyways. That's a 2 week average updated on Saturday. Our current 7 day average is around 250/day :)

impressive

Yeah, release day has been a HUGE hit
this time next week you'll see most of our site numbers double, if not triple on that stackexchange.com/sites page
Now that 11.10 is running smoothly on my netbook, it's time to install the AU lens \o/

Oli
I'm surprised at how slow SU and SF are

Yes, thank you! :D

You're welcome!
Hope it goes well on Thursday.

@JorgeCastro: Just in case you're still around - I spent most of the last few hours digging through some threading issues in the data server.
...as well as removing the libcurl dependency.
The server now requires Qt - nothing more.
...and I've updated the instance running on my server.
Please let me know if you run into any issues with the updated server.
That's it for me - night all.

Q: C program on 64 bit ubuntu

gorthiI have a piece of code in C which runs on ubuntu 10.04 on a 32 bit machine but doesn't work in my 64 bit laptop with ubuntu 10.04.

least useful question ever :P
@Oli I'd want to migrate that question, except that there's about zero content

Oli
Yeah there's no value at all. I'm asking them to expand a little bit and then we can see what it's really about.

probably simple 64-bit portability
not really anything ubuntu specific, I'd imagine

7:05 AM
Why close it, @Oli? Will you re-open the question if he adds more detail? Oo

Hey, regarding the hybrid CD/USB images, doesn't the USB need to have boot flag or something?

@Oxwivi - I simply use the Universal USB stuff and my pendrive will boot just fine.

@Shiki Universal USB?

Sec
This works perfectly. If it won't boot, just repeat the process.
Or if you are on Linux already, there is a tool for that too

7:20 AM
good morning

@htorque - morning!
Btw I discovered the problem with Unity in 11.10
You have to manually launch "unity" from Terminal EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I checked the Unity_compatibility tool, it says everything is supported
(Intel MHD4500)
Then I switched to my Radeon HD3650. The driver install fails from "Restricted drivers". Both of them. I tried to install it manually from ATI. That failed too. :(

really, what to do with this?
it's marked as "Low answer quality score [100]". if i agree, it's getting a flag for deletion, which is certainly not what we want.

edit the answer?

it's not about saving the answer, but about what to do with the moderation flag

ah, I don't have enough rep to see the flag :)
I'm just a lowly user around here :)

i just don't get the point of flagging any posting as low quality on a site like this, where everyone can (suggest an) edit.
@ajmitch it says "top 3% this month" on your user page. :-)

my total rep is still too low to see mod tools

8:07 AM
yeah, anyways - we only have ~100 users with 2k+ rep, so you are definitely no "lowly" user ;-)

why is it wrong?
my rep there is only a few hours out of date

it shows 36 2k+ rep users
we have like 100

you're reading it wrong

and i don't think we gained that much within a month (iirc that data lags behind one month)

36 people in the 2k-3k bracket

8:11 AM
could be, but i'm not sure about that. why would you call it 2000+ then?
though, numbers would add up

Oli
@Shiki It can still be edited and yes, all they have to do is improve the question and then flag it or contact a moderator and we'll open it back up. By closing incomplete questions it stops people guessing and bumping an otherwise pointless question.

I'll hit 10k rep one day, but it's unlikely to be this year

Got me swagz! :D
\o/

if you don't it's not my fault - i upvoted almost all of your answers :P

congratulations

8:17 AM
@OctavianDamiean \o/

@htorque I'd need ~100rep/day to hit 10k by the end of the year
possible but very unlikely :)

@StefanoPalazzo just curious - who delivered your business cards?

given my answer rate of about 1/week since I started on the site :)

Is the chatterbox regulars here all receivers of swagz? I feel out of place.

@ajmitch guess i can bounty any of your answered questions and award you 500 rep over and over again :P

8:19 AM
@htorque that's cheating the system :P
@Oxwivi swag was for people on the first 2 pages of users, by overall reputation

@htorque OMG! Match-fixing! Gotta report to the mods!

I'll let my answers stand for themselves rather than having mass-upvotes & bounties

oh, i mass-upvote users quite often, but only the good answers. in case of ubuntu people that's almost all answers. ;-)

@ajmitch I know that, I was saying that most of the people in this chat are those users.

@Oxwivi quite likely

8:22 AM
Which is why I feel l'm out of place.

but not all were willing to put their contact data in a google doc form :P
i only did, because i'm moving soon. >:D

@htorque Of course not! The evil known as Google will learn of our addresses. XD

@Oxwivi That is mostly because we can coordinate quicker and work together to maintain the site here in chat.
Maintaining the site does also generate reputation in certain cases. :)

@OctavianDamiean Wasn't there a moderator chatroom?

the regulators room, but some refuse to use that *cough* *cough*

8:27 AM
easier just to handle stuff here

eww, i have to boot windows 7. wish me luck. :P bbl

I pray when I have to launch Ubuntu. :D

Because you pray for it to be slower than Windows 7 right? :D

Nah, mainly because of the ATI driver :(

WFM(TM)

8:36 AM
@ajmitch - How did you install the driver? From the .sh installer?

no, I would never do that
that way lies madness
I am using the fglrx package

Uhm... which fglrx package? Oo
I mean there are like... 10
the post updates one, the normal one...
(the restricted driver installer failed altogether)

shudders I would never use ATI for starters.

literally just the fglrx package - I haven't installed updates since last week, so it's most likely one step behind what's currently in restricted
What did you mean by "failed altogether"?

shudders I would never use ATI.

8:49 AM
nods

Intel FTW! (Who cares about games, HD videos are quite enough!)

right, i've stopped gaming and now all i need is a cpu with integrated graphics - that's sweet.

I need a new graphics card.

@ajmitch - Ubuntu said it couldn't install the package, something failed
The log was no use at all
Well, I have an Intel card too (in-built), but I have to run "unity" from a Terminal after every boot to have normal effects/acceleration
for some reason I get the 'dumb' version if I don't run it by hand
and if I start to run "unity" from an autorun file, it won't work...

you probably already got that tip: try resetting the unity compiz setting profile by starting it with unity --reset
note: you'll lose all compiz settings!
