12:01 AM
and what is the problem?

@LuisAlvarado I need your help with jQuery and the $.post() function

help me re-integrate
I need all in one script

@mojo706 What you need is:

?

@mojo706 As far as I can tell, there is no script actually using the form data.

12:04 AM
1 - A file where the user enter the information and you check it with javaScript
That file is register.php right?

yes

That file need JavaScript to check the information entered
after that..

yes?

you have to create a confirm.php o whatever file
in that file you have to create the records in the Database

I have create_db file

12:07 AM
and there is where you need the ramdom.php file
@mojo706 but you are not using that file

I just received an email from a frustrated Ask Ubuntu user:

Hi Gert

I apreciate your feedback but am not that thrilled with the editing of
my questions.

doei

@gertvdijk so?

What should I do with it?

junk

@Lucio thanks

12:09 AM
no problem
@mojo706 Remember to re-check the information in the second PHP file!!

I will

@gertvdijk No users matched your search.

@Lucio ?

I just searched their name doei but no records where found

@Lucio That's Dutch for "bye". He tried to write that in my native language I think.

12:17 AM
oh
haha
@gertvdijk funny

I think it's about this post: http://askubuntu.com/posts/314810/revisions
He reverted my edit. Now there's his personal frustrations back. ;)

I just don't know how did him get your email

@Lucio I blame Launchpad. :P

oh
It's 1994 again
:O
@gertvdijk Oh men. You are trapped
:P

@Lucio yeah I saw that. I just don't like people sending emails anonymously.

12:24 AM

Q: How to kill a zombie process which can't be killed without rebooting?

Sam StoelingaThere are 5 processes which can't be killed by kill -9 $PID and executing cat /proc/$PID/cmdline will hang the current session. Executing ps -ef or htop will also hang the current session. But top and ps -e are working fine. So it seems that there are two problems the filesystem not responding....

Is "use vlc" a valid answer for mplayer isn't working?

5:04 AM
also, the open django book needs more of this: lightbird.net/dbe/index.html - practical examples are worth pages and pages and pages of "this is how templates work".

@Rinzwind That is too funny \o/
Should I delete mine?

8:48 AM
I would ;-) @Mitch but you decide for yourself. It is better than the other dudes (he used a non-default name for the profile and you got 1 image more)
I like your new answer _O- @mitch

Thanks I elicited from the gconftool manual.

Q: different hardware - different solutions despite of one topic like e.g. nvidia

dschinn1001e.g. with this nvidia-post I got voted up or voted down, because this solution only works for CUDA optimus cards of nvidia - when bumblebee is added as repo. Hi, are any of you guys using KeeFox? I can't disable the behaviour where I'm asked how to configure everything again when I start Firefox. Keefox and Keepass are working already, so there is no need for this window to pop up after every start.

no - never heard of this ... suggest post a question on the main site.

@fossfreedom Is it okay to post application specific questions on askubuntu? Because I have several.

@gentmatt yep - according to the FAQ, we love questions about apps that run on ubuntu.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll start preparing some questions then.

Q: Moving apt-mirror folders between machines

ruda.almeidaWe have one office with broadband and another one with dialup. My goal is to create a local Ubuntu mirror on the second office. I have used apt-mirror on my local machine, and it downloaded about 130GB of packages. How do I transfer these files to another computer to create a local mirror?

@ruda.almeida and?

@fossfreedom ...and I need help, I don't know how to proceed.

give it time - you only posted it 3 minutes ago!

@fossfreedom There's a post on meta saying I can post a link to the questions on chat and it's the normal procedure

2:17 PM
We should correct the meta post.

Q: Is it OK to post a link to my question in the general chat room, to publicize it?

Eliah KaganIf I ask a question and want to draw attention to it, is it OK to post links to it in the general chat room? Or is this considered bad, since there is already a questions feed and if lots of people manually posted links to their questions in chat, the chat room might be overwhelmed? Please note ...

carry a discussion about the question, edit question to reflect new information discovered in chat ---> dont just dump Q's in chat. If you wish to discuss, say hi and discuss.

@ruda.almeida the best practice is to assume chat is not a live support.

@jokerdino Sorry

2:23 PM
preferably, strike a conversation instead of just leaving a link and expecting us to provide you an answer.

@jokerdino Sorry
@fossfreedom Please, delete my message with the link

nah - no reason to ... what do you want to discuss about the Q?

Well... I was tasked with creating a local Ubuntu mirror on a place with dialup internet access.
step 1: I ran apt-mirror on my local machine, I have now about 130 GB of package files
step 2: I have no idea

Hi guys, I have done something silly... got a remote server that I haven't been on in about 6 months... I set up and forgot the password... but I am logged in still... Rather than reboot, do you know if I can force passwd at all?

@ruda.almeida I would start looking to see where apt-mirror put the .deb files
and then setting it up on the remote machine and putting the debs there

2:34 PM
@JorgeCastro by default is is /var/spool/apt-mirror but my / partitio is small so I changed it to /~/mirror
But I suppose there's some config file editing prior to just copying the files

@WilliamHilsum you are logged in and want to reset the password?

Oli
@WilliamHilsum I think the only way you can fix that is rebooting into grub, recovery mode, remounting in rw and then using passwd from the root account (which you'll be thrown into in recovery mode).

@jokerdino Yeah, I am on the Drac in to the machine... I never logged out 6 months ago, and just can't remember the password... doesn't seem to be in my database for some reason :/
@Oli :( damn

Oli
passwd from a non-root account will need a current password (makes sense really, doesn't it?) so unless you want to try cracking your current password...
You could add your public key and use that log in in the future but you'll never be able to sudo unless you go through recovery mode to get a real password.

@Oli well, technically it does... but it also doesn't!. I completely understand for sudo, but, isn't that a limitation of the passwd command and nothing else.

Oli
2:48 PM
@WilliamHilsum Scenario: you leave your workstation logged in, snotty kid comes along and passwd lets them change your password and lock you out. That's why most systems require your current password in order change it to something else.

e.g. my user should be able to change my password... it is just the passwd command that requires the current one... so, if I am logged in, there must be a third party tool/something I can download and run, under the context of my user, that can reset my password...
@Oli don't get me wrong, I completely understand... just playing devil's advocate... it makes sense to ask for it, just thinking as an admin/the way things work, you should be able to work around it.... and in those situations, I'll say the guy should have logged out! (if anyone went on this server and it was possible, I'll only have myself to blame!)

Oli
I think that's all obfuscated away by pam_auth. Your new password submission gets churned up and turned around but AFAIK that does need the original as part of the process.
There may be a way to beat pam into submission but I don't know it.

Going to sound so dodgy, but, I don't suppose anyone knows a quick/flexible SSH brute forcer? I am certain I know what the password is (e.g. contains x elements)... just not sure which order, which capitals and which symbols...
Oh well... How long does it take roughly to do the safe reset? I have console access so may just be quicker!

I see our national holiday got a Google Doodle today.

4:15 PM
@jokerdino, @oli - hmm... in recovery mode, but, when I try to change password, it just says "Authentication token manipulation error"... don't suppose either of you have any advice other than "don't forget your passwords!"?

Oli
@WilliamHilsum Is the disk mounted in rw or readonly? I think by default it's ro these days
Something like sudo mount -o remount,rw / should fix that

hmm... whatever the default is... don't think of it...
@Oli thanks... That did it
No matter how much I learn, there is always more :( Wouldn't of guessed this was the issue :(

@NathanOsman You must be on EuroPython!

Why?

@Oli Looking at the default output from mount... How did you tell that, I am reading it, but can't really see how I could have known!

Q: Why is the avaialble space in my $HOME decreasing?

TimMy OS is Ubuntu 12.04. As System Monitor shows, "free" for my $HOME is 1.6GiB, but "Available" is 222.7 MiB and is keeping slowly decreasing from around 750 MiB yesterday. I am not aware that I am adding more data to $HOME. So I would like to know how to find out the reason that causes that,...

I currently on Windows and this Zalgo thing looks like a bunch of square blocks.
The same happens on Ubuntu?

@Zignd should have said 'halo thar' for a better effect
@Zignd i can read zalgo

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ yep. the one true browser

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ That's why I love this operating system

@Zignd how do you censor the zalgo text?
;)

5:19 PM
@jokerdino what do you mean with "censor"?

@Zignd 'tis a joke
@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ do you get 100 flags too?

I'm the poorest one, only 13.

5:21 PM
i suppose it is a bug

and, I have very low quality and other for mod attention... were there more options for mod attention?
More Spam flags!

how to you get those point, I think when you flag a question you loose one, right?

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ are you trying to troll me?

Some of those symbols are showing up as squares here.

5:27 PM
@Zignd you asked jokerdino what he means about "censoring", those are blank Unicode boxes
@NathanOsman how many flags do you have, I think @jokerdino found a bug (or a new change)

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ Do is possible to create a new font that only you and a friend have so that only those two guys could understand it in a chat?

@Zignd Yes and no.

@NathanOsman please explain you answer.

@Zignd that could be interesting

@Zignd: You could create the font but you would have to rely on some other form of text obfuscation.

5:30 PM
might as well just use a ROT13 or something.

Because otherwise you're simply performing a variant of ROT13.
@jokerdino Ah!! You beat me to it.

you would need to mess up the order of the letters as well, otherwise everything could be translated by forcing another font.

Q: Am I the first person to be privileged with 100 flags for the day?

AdityaI have been on and off the Stack Exchange network for the last couple of days and hence have not been able to raise the usual number of flags that I often raise. With last flagged post on 17th June; I thought about raising some flags for our dear moderators - and I am allowed to raise 100 flags f...

@NathanOsman so, basically I would need to create a decoder like the one in this site -> zalgotext.com

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ One would need to do more than simply reorder the glyphs in the font. Letter frequency could probably be used to determine the translation table and then read the messages.
@Zignd I'm afraid that fonts themselves do not provide any means of encryption.
So to answer your second question, no.

5:33 PM
@NathanOsman that too, would be fun - but not secure or "unreadable"

To ensure that communications are truly private you would need to either possess a shared key or perform a key exchange.

Well there are some programs that allow you to create fonts by drawing it. Chinese for example is not understand on Windows by default, so could we create a font that looks like normal letters, but you would need the font file installed to read it?

For more information on this, I would recommend reading up on Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange.

well looks like I have to wait till july 31, to change my name again.

@Zignd You need to understand the difference between the glyphs (physical representation of a character) and the characters themselves.

5:37 PM
anyone know what python library is most "preferred" community wise for python imagemagick integration?
@JorgeCastro ^^ superfluous ping, but I think you either know, or know who knows

@CallmeV Perhaps this?
I'm not sure if you could find anything "preferred" by the community...
...but I picked that one since it has been updated recently.
Then again, the docs contain the following comment:
> "Python APIs(NOTICE!! this api is alpha version!!):"

Agreed, and that is probably a good metric. I was just making sure I wasn't stepping in on the wrong side of the ffmpeg avconv war...if that makes sense.

...so I would take what I said earlier with a grain of salt.

also valid.

@CallmeV would this one fit your purpose?
10
Q: Can I access ImageMagick API with Python?

bsktball11chI need to use ImageMagick as PIL does not have the amount of image functionality available that I am looking for. However, I am wanting to use Python. The python bindings (PythonMagick) have not been updated since 2009. The only thing I have been able to find is os.system calls to use the comman...

5:40 PM
PyPi is always a good place to start though.

@Zignd not really. there are three (or so) different python api-s. i'm looking for what has community backing so i stem off porting because something is no longer in repo. i suppose i could go with opencv, but that would be like using a nuke to kill a fly

@Zignd There we go. That looks helpful.

@Zignd it's helpful, but i'm not looking for "an api" i'm looking for the one that will last.

@CallmeV: This should seal your decision: python-wand is in the Raring archives.

@NathanOsman thanks

5:42 PM
If it's in the archives, you can be sure it will stay there for a while.

wand it is

Well if it's in the archives I would trust

in all probability it won't even come in to play as maintenance, i'ld just rather think it out and not have to instead of say "i should have thought this out"

@CallmeV have you looked at this IM official page?: imagemagick.org/script/api.php

yes, that's where i got the 3 or so number
i was trying to whittle 3 down to one
in other news, i have an interview in two days in my subject area. oddly scheduled the same time window as my dsl install

5:48 PM
The temperature here just hit 37 C.

@NathanOsman I feel sad for you.

basically, the reason i'm asking is a picture to ascii conversion routine. i know they exist, but instead of working backwards and making a list of black, gray, and white characters then decomposing, i'm working forwards and saying "you only have three characters. now substitute in from the list to make your ascii art shellcode work"
seems like the most reasonable workflow
@NathanOsman the room or your physical location?

@CallmeV I would sugest asking a question at SO and starting a bounty.

i don't have the rep over there to do bounties. i do here, but not there
@NathanOsman i'm at 76 all the time, a 196 KWh usage, and a $30 power bill

@NathanOsman is said on your profile that you live in Canada, but I live in Brazil (a hot place) and it's only 17 C

5:51 PM
methinks he meant the room not his physical location...unless he's running a makeshift datacenter in his basement

kkk

@M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ What did you do to your name?
It breaks chat.

@jokerdino i don't get in to religion

I think V just came up with a new word... busticates.

it's an iteration of busticated which already existed

5:56 PM
@Zignd Well I guess @M̦̙̬̿̌͒a͇̯̾͒̌͜t̖͚̥͆̀͝ȩ͔͔̂̏̓o̾ will have to kill me then... because I know his real name! :O
