Q: A Question about .bash_profile

DBSI would like to edit my .bash_profile file. However it appears that in Ubuntu (and perhaps other Debian distros) this is named as .profile. However I cannot seem to find the expected variables like $PATH, $PS etc. in the .profile file. The .bashrc file doesn't seem to do any good either. I a...

Hello! I am trying to use gunzip to recursively unzip files in a directory using the command: find . -name "*.css" -exec gunzip {} \; -- But I need to pass the -S option with gunzip. How do I modify the command?

hi there!
quick question to the floor:
in Texmaker,
qpdfview %.pdf
is set as my external pdf viewer
this opens a new instance of qpdfview, rather than just opening a new tab
how to make it open the pdf as a new tab (to the already open qpdfview) ?

@nuttyaboutnatty you need the option --unique
qpdfview --unique %.pdf

thanks!
man qpdfview...
;)

if only all questions were that easy ;)

as I said: that was a quick one ;)

Oli
7:20 AM
@Seth Hm?

another issue, hopefully also quickly resolvable:
I got a bunch of fonts in this directory:
/home/<username>/.fonts (where <username> is your user name) -- see wiki.ubuntu.com/Fonts
they're all recognized by/in LibreOffice
but don't seem to be on the TeX-PATH-variable or whatever
how to add 'em to that PATH ?
or do I just need to do some sort of cache-update ?
not sure if I ever did this: sudo fc-cache -f -v
(couldn't find it in terminal history; does terminal history go back to the "big bang", or does it stop recording at ice-age?)

Oli
@nuttyaboutnatty No, there is a limit

middle-ages, I guess then...

Oli
And also things do get lost between the cracks (eg loading two terminals at a time - only one history will be remembered)

(I know)
so... safe to fire sudo fc-cache -f -v ?
would taht also "update"/recognize /home/<username>/.fonts ?

Oli
7:34 AM
@nuttyaboutnatty No, without sudo for that

so just fc-cache -f -v ?

Oli
Do both. It'll be fun.
The sudo version does scan homedirs too. How odd.

hmm
I think I'll end up just defining the path in the TeX file
unrelated meta-question:
reading about *.SX vs competitors
for askbot.org, for instance, it seems to be possible to connect with it via a terminal / command-line interface
(at least more easily compared to SX)

lol

are you using SX via your browser?
@Mochan I'm glad I'm not a kid anymore...
but nice...

7:43 AM
@nuttyaboutnatty LOL yeah haha! The look on his face... just priceless.
@nuttyaboutnatty Me?

are you using any keyboard shortcuts? are there any shortcuts (e.g. in this chat to reply to a specific message, or does one need to use the mouse) ?
@Mochan general question about how best to use SX and SX.chat(s)

Oli
@nuttyaboutnatty Why on earth would you want to do that?

@nuttyaboutnatty If you press Up you edit your previous message, You can auto-fill a persons name with a letter then Tab... idk. Not really.

Oli
Well there's tab :)

@Oli +1

7:45 AM
@Oli read about it on a comparison site, no idea, to geek it up a notch or two I guess ?!?
@Mochan that's helpful, thx
what does "idk" stand for ?

Oli
I don't know
lol
Walked face first into that one.

how can you reply to a specific message, say five posts ago (without doing damage to your tab key)

Oli
With a mouse

or a cat
just seems to be a missing feature
(as in, missing in-built feature, without trying to hack around it on a user-basis)

Oli
I guess you could hire somebody to sit next to you and drive your mouse. That's less of a shortcut and more of a "Oh no my monocle popped out" feature.

7:49 AM
haha
wicked
idk what idk stands for

@Mochan You! Again!

8:05 AM
@FEichinger You're always on .___. but hey
@nuttyaboutnatty No worries

@Mochan I am? Heya :)

@FEichinger You most definitely are! How's life?

@Mochan I'm fairly certain I haven't been around all that much recently.
And ... it's boring, painful and filled with alcohol.
Yours? :P

Hm... not too bad. I've been trying to learn German recently. It's pretty hard grammatically, but it's a neat language :)

"Neat" isn't the word I would've used, but hey. :P

8:13 AM
Neat as in cool ;)
@FEichinger Do you speak German? I remember last time you told me you were British, but living in Germany?

@Mochan Fluent, yes. I do hate it, though. It's an ugly language, in my opinion. Heck, German poetry forces entirely different constructions just to sound remotely "beautiful".

@FEichinger flagged

@Takkat I don't blame you... that was a little rude to say.
@FEichinger o_o

@Takkat <3

:)

8:21 AM
My fault. This room should be Ubuntu-only, right...?
But I am Mochan...

@Mochan I'm fairly certain we never actually considered this "Ubuntu only". :P

@FEichinger Let's hope so.

Also: The retag privilege has been removed. - New privilege still isn't in place.

Here's something Ubuntu-related: Is there any way to alter brightness on Workspaces? Like Workspace #1 at 100%, Workspace #2 at 20% etc?

I guess I won't be improving questions at all anymore. No OT-flagging, no retags ... Seriously, this is just asking for bad questions to go unnoticed.

8:26 AM
it's "around" Ubuntu. Mochan and the German language both are around. So it's probably on topic... :D

@Takkat LOL

@Takkat lol

Oli
@FEichinger What's so different about the new system? Your tag changes just go through the suggested edit process. Why is that so bad?

<-- back to work

@Takkat, @FEichinger What is the difference between "Du bist gut" and "Bist du gut"?

8:28 AM
@Mochan One's a question, the other isn't. :P

Oli
Indeed.
Word order matters in German

@Oli Being English, this doesn't help :S and Japanese doesn't really apply either.
@FEichinger Which is the question?

@Oli Because it's inefficient.

Oli
The second

@Mochan The latter.

8:30 AM
@FEichinger OK. So... "Are you good?".

A mere retag was an easy way of pushing a post to the attention of the people watching the correct tag. Going through the review queue delays that for no good reason.
@Mochan Yep.
@Mochan Also note: In that case "good" isn't synonymous with "fine". It's a comparative "good".

@FEichinger LOL
Well what the hell. I posted on facebook something when I first started learning German and one of my peers replied "sorry - there are grammatical issues too, but i don’t want to look like a cow - bist du gut!" what the noodle?

What the noodle, indeed.

I then said, "I can't speak German very well, I've only really learned "Die Frau isst einen Apfel" XD". And she replied, "The Miss is an apple ?". I said I meant ißt not isst, which she thought was ist. She hasn't replied rofl.

Oli
Aren't ß and ss interchangeable?
(for convenience in a modern Roman world)

8:37 AM
@Oli Essentially, yes. Officially, no.

@Oli das shrug

A lot of that stuff changed a couple years ago - ß is being abandoned in many cases.

Oli
It's been a good 12 years since I had any sort of German lesson and I'll admit I didn't pay much attention so I'm probably not helping this discussion. Shame about the demise of the esset though. It's a nice character.

@Oli I agree. I think it gives German writing/text a certain distinction, no?

Oli
Yup. They'll be after the umlaut next.
And then it's pretty much just English with the ds and ts swapped over and a broken space bar.

8:42 AM
So ... Dutch?

Oli
Is just a stoned German.

Q: Is it an error when I do not use ß when it is necessary?

RoflcoptrExceptionI'm living in a German-speaking country where ß is not used at all. Therefore, I do not use ß when I write German texts. Now I'm asking myself if this is technically a spelling error? Or is the ß more or less just a convention?

Are they having bandwidth problems, server migration problems, something else that you're aware of?

Oli
1:12 PM
status.github.com should be your first port of call when you experience downtime with Github. They're fairly good at reporting things.

oh, so their uptime is awesome, but their response time is ramping hard

1:31 PM
from the charts, it looks like the bottleneck might be storage. is github really running out of space?

Oli
@CallmeV Doubt it's free space related. I imagine all their storage is some sort of distributed SAN and they're prone to their own sets of networking and failover troubles.
But speaking of free space...
/dev/md126p1                  4326436284 4105948356     717560 100% /media/ned
:( Need moar disks.

@Oli I could understand that. It was just a question since that status page has storage - problem listed... Yes, probably something else, but I don't have access to the SAN or S3 configs
I haven't hooked up my USB backup stuff yet, but I'm reinstalling the new laptop next week to get bcache working after i save all my progress and have broadband.

We've identified the source of angry unicorns being related to search, and are working to resolve that now.

Oli
Maybe a little but I can sympathise

@AmithKK good call. so somebody may or may not be running superfluous searches to bring down their response time as a type of DB query exhaustion attack...makes sense.

1:44 PM
Dammit

I always worry over the little things... using iptables, I set default input/forward to drop and created one accept rule... now, whenever I type iptables -L, it takes about 5-10 seconds instead of instant... iptables -L -n -v is still instant... can't understand why :/

@WilliamHilsum probably something with determining names for things since -n is numeric only and -L would allow named no numeric identifiers. just a from the hip gut instinct from reading the man page

@CallmeV ok, v is a red herring.... still takes a while, the moment I add -n, it is instant... but, it displays the same with the addition of a destination ip (displays 0.0.0.0/0 instead of "anywhere")
so, don't really get why it is slower without :/
maybe it takes a while to convert 0.0.0.0/0 to anywhere then :/

or it does some kind of string checking to make sure it's not going to have parsing errors on bad strings in names.

fair point

1:51 PM
think: "is it unicode or ascii, okay load a ruleset, okay check, okay is it unicode or ascii" repeat ad infinitum
again, from the hip

What I'm saying is that the question is perfectly on-topic, even within the scope defined. It is to be closed because it is a unique instance of user error. That's not off-topic, it is simply too narrow to be helpful for future visitors. Stretching the definition of what is part of the topic definition just to accomodate the removal of TL is quite pointless. We have replaced misuse of one close reason with misuse of another, congratulations. — FEichinger 7 secs ago

@FEichinger sometimes you make me smile a little

@CallmeV I live to please.

"Master Rahl guide us. Master Rahl teach us. Master Rahl protect us. In your light we thrive. In your mercy we are sheltered. In your wisdom we are humbled. We live only to serve. Our lives are yours."
that's hyperbole btw...and i know it. it was just a funny reference
@WilliamHilsum wait, does it do dns resolution on ip addresses for non-numeric only? that would slow it down like hell

2:08 PM
@CallmeV I think you have it! No internet connection on this machine, dns resolution would fail... I wasn't seeing it on that rule, but, makes perfect sense... I feel like an idiot! :(

@WilliamHilsum It's fine. Sometimes you just need another head in the game.

head in the game... need a new person in this job! :(

I have an interview on Wednesday, but if that doesn't work out I am available... ;)

2:23 PM
@ath88 - your website is an it works page...

@CallmeV Good luck!

@WilliamHilsum We'll see. It took a good six months for them to respond, but it's a mentor position for the college where I went to college.
thx btw

I know. >.< I forgot which machine it was hosted on. I recently reinstalled my server, and the content wasnt on my list.
@CallmeV Changed it now, thank you for reminding me. :P

@ath88 it's okay, my website listing is noneatthistime. i just got a dns name of aaf.af to reduce the number of characters used for alphanumeric shellcode url stuffs. still haven't pointed it at a vps, but it's coming...slowly, but surely.
tired of alphanumeric encoders failing b/c i don't have enough character space.
@ath88 your change was...hilarious

@CallmeV Thats a short domain. I was quite happy with getting a 4-character domain. And yes, the change is tiny, but now it's clear that i know i have something responding on :80 :P

2:36 PM
short, and it only uses 2 distinct characters, which is what people overlook i think. i haven't run tests to verify, but i suspect having a low number of distinct characters is nearly as important as length

Installing Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 is a royal PITA.

i just installed on an asus win8 box and determined that dual booting windows with uefi was a bug...

Oli
@ath88 Yeah I had to disable nouveau from the live boot prompt (and then from within the non-live prompt)
Can't remember if just adding nomodeset does the job or if there's more you need to tack on there.

@Oli Can you specify how you did this? I can get as far as the graphical installer, but it keeps getting stuck on "Configuring hardware" during the installation.

Oli
@ath88 Oh I could never get that far. I couldn't get in to a graphical environment on the Nouveau drivers. Basically at the boot menu (the one that asks you to pick a language) there should be a Other Options thingy on the bottom (I think it's F6). Pick that, turn on nomodeset and see if you get any further.
There is a chance that it's not the same issue.

Q: 12.10 unable to install or even run from Live CD with nVidia GTX 580

user99056I've used Ubuntu in the past (set up as web server, etc over in Iraq), so I'm not a 100% Linux Noob, however, I'm running into a brick wall here. @Oli Yea, that's what i did. That loads up a 2d unity. Might not be the same problem then.

there's an answer in there that talks about your specific graphics card

@CallmeV Thanks. I have been something for something along that specific topic string. Strange how apparent topics elude Google searches.

google vs stack search vs google site:askubuntu.com... depends on what you need

@CallmeV Very true, but thanks a lot! This has been a problem for three years, so i'm puzzled as to why it is still there. Maybe i should just pick up the issue myself and look into a fix.

2:52 PM
It has to do with the 580 being an old card. The focus generally speaking is new cards. The problem will probably continue forever unless someone non-official fixes it. Just my opinion

I see. I have 3 friends who are affected by this as well. I previously moved the physical disk into another machine and installed the nvidia drivers there, and then moved the disk back. I guess we are just unlucky then. :) But i'm glad to hear it is not an issue with never cards.

Even some older nvidia cards don't have the issue. My old lappie runs an nvidia card, and it works/installed fine. It's peculiar to the 580

Q: Ubuntu 13.04 seems to randomly crash

user42285I'm using an x64 distro of Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell inspiron 1464, but it keeps crashing for no apparent reason. Yeah, probably stuck.

Guess ill try the alternative installer then.

@Mateo You bet!
@RolandiXor But not surprising.

Yeah.
refraining from saying what I want to say
In other news, I'm going to finally write that Zhackers review some time today.

In other news... my Raspberry Pi is coming later today!

I'm also working on Mission : Illumination today.

@RolandiXor On 2buntu?

4:32 PM
@NathanOsman yep

@NathanOsman wooo!

It'll take some time to compile Qt on it though.
That is, unless Raspbian includes a build of Qt5 in their archives or whatever.

@NathanOsman hm, yeah, I got V.2 to work no problem. That might be interesting with qt5

Yeah, I'll look into that to see if I can somehow avoid compiling everything myself.

4:37 PM
@NathanOsman should I write about Mission : Illumination on 2buntu when the time is right? Or should I let someone else do it?

If I have to do it myself, I might be better off cross-compiling for ARMv6 from an actual computer.

I can mess around with it too when I get my pi back, It is attached to the church tv right now as a slide show box (there are ordering one this week)

@RolandiXor What would be more awesome than a special article by the author himself?

@NathanOsman lol

@Mateo That's a neat way to use it :)

4:39 PM
@Mateo that's pretty cool!

I just got a DVI-D / HDMI adapter so I can plug in my 23" HD monitor.

I should check out that option

@NathanOsman what is really cool is the tv powers the pi with usb, and the tv power turns it on and off.

Although the processor only runs at 700MHz, the graphics are amazing.

Sweet

4:40 PM
@Mateo Clever!

So the Pi has no power source of its own?

It requires 5V / 700 mA of power.

via - micro usb
so you can get and adapter with that end, a usb + usb power adapter, or plug it into a powered usb port

@Mateo How do you make sure it doesn't corrupt the filesystem when power from the TV is cut?

So in my case, I have a special USB adapter that plugs into the wall and supplies 5V / 1 A.
@ath88 There are a number of ways around that.
For one, if the unit is merely being used to display content, the root filesystem could be mounted read-only.

4:46 PM
Is there a higher powered version of the Pi or a similar system with better specs that can be modded in the same way?

@NathanOsman I see. I have a project where i need a portable Pi. I have a battery pack which works fine, but when i have to turn off the power, i risk corrupting the filesystem. But mounting the filesystem as read-only should work. That's a neat one.

Well, the tolerance for voltage irregularities is about ±0.25V. But you can exceed the current rating (1 A instead of 700 mA for example).
@RolandiXor What voltage do they use in your country? 120V? 240V?

@NathanOsman 120

So same as here.

@ath88 I not too worried about that, It pulls content from a shared drive on boot, and I can just replace/reformat the sd card

4:51 PM
I'd want a system with a 1Ghz or higher processor if possible, but if not I'd just go with the regular Pi.

@RolandiXor Bear in mind that you can't compare processor speed among different architectures - in this case ARMv6 vs. x86_64.

@Mateo Rewriting a backed up image to the SDcard was my solution. But since i have non-nerds using it, it would be nice if it didn't get corrupted.

@NathanOsman I know :)
My phone had a 680Mhz processor IIRC

@RolandiXor Geek explanation: ARMv6 is a RISC (reduced instruction set) architecture and x86_64 is a CISC (complex instruction set) architecture.

I know lol :D
RISC processors tend to be mighty fast at certain operations.

4:55 PM
@ath88 you might be able to rig up a button using the pins to send shutdown signal

@RolandiXor I know you know :) I just enjoy explaining things :)

I wonder if anyone has tried to create a massive robot from Pis :>
muhahaha Er, haha, ha.

@Mateo Yes. That is true. I would, however, prefer a software solution. :) I think mounting part of the filesystem as read-only would work.

@NathanOsman lol it's all good

@RolandiXor There would be some challenges. Servo motors typically require a lot of power / current... and the RPi is designed to be a low-power device.

@RolandiXor I know that the Technical University of Denmark made a huge cluster of Pi's. Apparently it's awesome for stress-testing network-stuff.

@NathanOsman but, a bunch of them (for brains) hooked up to motors powered from another source would be great :>
@ath88 nice

@RolandiXor Reminds me of LEGO Mindstorms.

@NathanOsman oooo legos!

@NathanOsman mindstorms was fun, I had one, couldn't get it to follow a line very well and the lego bricks didn't handle torque very well, would build a design that would drive around for a couple minuets then pop apart.

@NathanOsman +1 :) I have 40 kilo of that stuff :X

Q: How to use Gnome's extensions

MirroredFateI have been trying to install some Gnome extensions from the site https://extensions.gnome.org. I get the dialogue asking if I want to install, but after I select yes, it fails silently. This is the behavior using either Firefox or Chromium. I have checked to make sure the Gnome Shell Integration...

@Rinzwind Have EV3?
That one runs linux
@Rinzwind I think you are talking about technic

@AmithKK no all lego. old skool with no fancy mindstorm but also the cool mindstorm stuff <3
and no EV3 here :(

It's not released yet
runs full linux on brick
probably can run python
I still don't get why it's 10k for the brick
it's just 2k for the Rpi
or 3k :P

@Rinzwind Its a Lego robot kit

BBT
Good Night
Trying to make a NewsDash on the Rpi

5:45 PM
@Mateo That's the RCX
Not the NXT

that is type I used to have
as a kid

ah cool!
I started with an arduino
stayin with it :P
Servo control is a pain in the @ss without some good power supply
Ok, Good Night then

later

@Mateo you dare to tell me about LEGO? >:)
@mitch did hardinfo also report if something is not working?
(as far as I know it lists everything in your system but not if a driver for it works 100%)
