General discussion for scifi.stackexchange.com, both on-topic ...

user136984
They collect what they call "Floofs" there! :D

@Videonauth UnforTUNAtely I ran out of puns, and have only awkward ones left, although I could google online for a few perls of wisdom.I don't C no reason why we can't discuss something else, though, over a cup of Java.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy: Is that really the level it's got to in here?

user136984
Dear dear

user136984
:D

god im tired already, but i was only awak for about 4 hours O_o

@ParanoidPanda yep, unfortunately my mental powers are focused in different direction, so can provide only these puns. I could try jokes about German sausages, but they're the wurst

user136984
:D

6:11 PM
sad the pun i had in mind wont work in english tho

fail

POSIX=1 LC_ALL=C ./pun || printf "%s\n" "fail"
I've no idea what I'm doing
@ThomasWard you don't say @_@

i just wanted a reason to smack everyone in this room :P

@ThomasWard That's what she said ...

6:20 PM
@ThomasWard This needs to go on the chat twitter feed lol

user136984
@ThomasWard: Talking to yourself isn't a good sign you know...

( ^_^)b <--- thumbs up

@Videonauth 3rd to getting near to 200 mostly due to that one answer :D

@Rinzwind nice, it seems its always the simply answers that yield the most rep somehow

@Videonauth because that's usually the case with it being simple :P
simple and easy to follow.
in some cases you just vote because authoritative source (nginx + me = i know my stuff because i maintain it, for example :P)

6:36 PM
@Videonauth "man" page answers are the best for getting fast reputation. More so if you are the 1st to answer
my top answer is about "uname" and I had to make the answer longer to be able to submit it ...

well i got an even simpler question today and was the first to answer

(oops my 2nd answer :D )

this is the one i was around to answer first today --> askubuntu.com/questions/974271/moved-file-to-typoed-folder/…
:D

sigh . . . why ${parameter:start:offset} is not POSIX, dangit ???

@Videonauth I was upvoter #2 on that

6:43 PM
and yesterday one on U&L which even surprised me to get votes
sometimes itis funny

do like me and ignore u+l >:)

@Rinzwind but it was an ubuntu question :p

so?
them ignoring AU is enough reason to ignore them >:)

@Videonauth I just had a terrible idea to post an answer full of puns and jokes on that question, but . . . I'll probably avoid doing that . . . the new user might not appreciate the humor

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy he might not getting the punch lines yeah

6:47 PM
you mean the punch of the command lines ?

this too :p

what did I miss o_O
ohai sergiy. how's life?

sethy! good evening

Hey, Seth ! Life's alright, just throwing around bad puns and poor ideas for answers, while drinking coffee and having breakfast ( <.< which is now cold because of the puns and answer ideas ) , and trying to find a POSIX way to emulate parameter substitution
How are you ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy eh, not so great. Got some kind of awful virus. But it could be worse.
Glad you're doing alright :)
@Rinzwind good morning Rinzy :)
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy wait, parameter expansion isn't POSIX?

7:00 PM
@Seth Parameter expansion is POSIX, but it doesn't have ${parameter:start:offset} type
I can do ${parameter:0:some_offset} with printf easily, but had to figure out how to do find arbitrary start point
$ dash -c 'echo $HOME; i=$1; while [ $i -le  ${#HOME} ] ; do rmcount="${rmcount}?" ; i=$(($i+1)); done; echo ${HOME##$rmcount}' sh 5
/home/xieerqi
erqi
That's what I got so far
basically pads specific number of ? into variable, and plugs that into ${var##???} prefix removal
wait that wasn't correct
$ dash -c 'echo $HOME; i=0; while [ $i -le  $1 ] ; do rmcount="${rmcount}?" ; i=$(($i+1)); done; echo ${HOME#$rmcount}' sh 3
/home/xieerqi
e/xieerqi

user136984
When does 17.04 go EOL by the way?

This is correct. Start at zero, add x number of ?, remove the x number of chars from left

@ParanoidPanda january 2018 according to this

there was once a command-line tool that allows you to check release support status
I know because I wrote answer about it
ubuntu-distro-info -r  --all -yeol
According to that, 17.04 should reach EOL in 78 days

7:18 PM
oh that command dont exist on 17.10 O_o

it exists on 16.04.
sounds about right though.

I don't remember whether I had to install it or not

┌─[20:12:21]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> keyrings $ ubuntu-
ubuntu-advantage       ubuntu-bug             ubuntu-core-launcher   ubuntu-drivers         ubuntu-support-status

you'll have to install distro-info
which provides several things.

ah ok

7:20 PM
(yay for apt-file search $(which ubuntu-distro-info)!)

so 4.10 is EOL since 4210 days O_o

what am i doing with my time, dammit

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy nothing good :P

rsubstr(){
    i=0;
    while [ $i -le  $2 ];
    do
        rmcount="${rmcount}?"
        i=$(($i+1))
    done;
    echo "${1#$rmcount}"
}

lsubstr(){
    printf "%.${2}s\n" "$1"
}
And now, hopefully my shell rc file has two portable functions for getting substrings

7:41 PM
@Rinzwind oh fun this simple question made it into the hot topics hahaha

7:57 PM
@terdon how portable am I ? askubuntu.com/a/972968/295286

Q: Cannot edit dconf database (Unity)

BrunjoxSo I am a Linux newbie and I have my freshly installed Ubuntu 17.10 with its standard Unity desktop. I have edited my dconf database to change stuff such as the time format and the screenshot folder, but the changes don't seem to apply, even after saving and rebooting multiple times. I tried to...

It is things like this that make me doubt humanity....www.trustedreviews.com/news/pornhub-not-android-biggest-loser-iphone‌-launch-3292903

I so want that article to not be fake news...

user136984
@TheXed: What's it about?

user136984
I can't completely tell from the URL.

user136984
And I don't want to go to the site because I'll need to do a long scan of it first.

@ParanoidPanda it is about how porn browsing sharply declines during apple events, then spikes immediately after...

user136984
9:08 PM
Oh

user136984
Right

user136984
So all those people attend those events?

user136984
Boring people...

so what its saying is that people are banned by the event and then have to wanker off ?

Or apple fans don't know that porn is way better then Tim Cook...

user136984
9:09 PM
That's another way of looking at it.

But goes to show you how shallow hipsters are...

user136984
Maybe they're just so used to looking at stuff like that that they misread his name and then got majorly disappointed by the event?

user136984
Well, I'm glad that it's all just stupid Apples users, probably all the Windows users who believed the Apple "virus-free" propaganda. :D

lol...I wonder what the stats would say about Windows users...

evening

user136984
9:12 PM
@AndyK: Hi

@AndyK sup? just talking about porn habits of Apple fans...

Are we all going to have to google 'apple porn' now?

user136984
I thought people preferred bananas?

apple fans watch porn...? omg

Cucumbers...

user136984
9:14 PM
Eggplants!

@AndyK it isn't that they watch porn that is striking...it is that when there is an ongoing apple event, that there is a noticeable drop in viewing on major porn sites...

@TheXed you've got an article ...?

Yeah it is stared...

user136984
@TheXed: Imagine if you didn't have an article and this conversation had just randomly started out of the blue! :D

user136984
That would be funny.

9:16 PM
@ParanoidPanda I know right...
@AndyK www.trustedreviews.com/news/pornhub-not-android-biggest-loser-iphone-launch-3292‌903

I was just sitting at my cpu, randomly wondering about the porn watching habits of apple users....

user136984
Fortunately though we can confirm our sanity with a link. That would just be too much if it started out of the blue and we all just joined in like that! :D

@CharlesGreen well that is what kind of happened...then I came across this article o.O

As my wife types away at her MacBook....
:)

see ya

9:19 PM
@CharlesGreen you have a wife? me too....well at least when I got out of bed I wasn't divorced yet...

And the concept of the mac for her, was that she would have someone to talk to when her computer did not work properly. That has not turned out as I wished.

@CharlesGreen you need to break it more often...
But I am guessing your wife isn't a person that is overly interested in watching Apple Press events...so porn it is....

user136984
@CharlesGreen: Nah, if you really want something to break, or actually just to be so annoying that it doesn't even need to break, then just get her a ChromeBook! ;)

(because apparently that is the only thing apple fans do on the internet...watch porn, and apple events)...

user136984
I am going to have to have words with my mother. :P

9:23 PM
@ParanoidPanda I am so sick of Chromebooks I want to quit my job...
@ParanoidPanda you are better off not having that conversation with your mother and just live in ignorance...

user136984
@TheXed It was the first time I used a computer where even Terminal wasn't a place you could escape to because it had less commands than the GUI!

user136984
@TheXed Yes, you are probably right.

@ParanoidPanda and their build quality is fairly awful...

user136984
@ByteCommander: \o

user136984
You just missed our weird fruity conversation! ;)

9:27 PM
Yes, it was both weird and fruity all rolled up into one pornhub...
I think that makes it a fruity porn rollup...
But we did establish that @ParanoidPanda needs to have a conversation with his mother about her porn habits...

user136984
Yes, indeed we did.

and I recommended that he not...

user136984
@TheXed: Yes, I think I decided to go with your recommendation too. Although I might have to bug the network.

user136984
Starts eating banana randomly found under desk

NO! NO! NO!
You don't know where that banana has been!

user136984
9:33 PM
Too late!

I think I just puked...

user136984
sudo yum dirty-banana

lol

user136984
I really just did eat a really nice and juicy big green banana though.

user136984
It was nice. ;)

user136984
9:37 PM
I have random assortments of fruit that I find and then randomly eat around my desk.

user136984
I'm a Panda, how could I survive if I didn't keep food around me somewhere all the time?

to be completely honest, I too am eating a banana, however it is more green then yellow...

cant wait for friday, then i will try my attempt to get 'The witcher III GOTY' working in playonlinux

I mean more yellow then green.

user136984
Bananas are good (though I prefer green).

9:40 PM
I prefer my bananas yellow...

user136984
Yellow is fine, but I just don't like it when they go all black skinned and slimy inside.

but I do open them in the correct manor

user136984
I used to think that I didn't like bananas because I came across too many of those.

Oh yeah the only thing a over ripped banana is good for is banana nut bread...

user136984
But I sure that I heard somewhere that when they are green they are actually the best for you health wise.

user136984
9:41 PM
@TheXed: How do you make that then?

@ParanoidPanda yes, when they are green they are not full of sugar yet IIRC...
@ParanoidPanda not sure, my wife makes it not me.

user136984
I'm sure there was more to it than that. I don't quite remember, but I'm sure there's something special like a vitamin that they lose when they go too ripe.

Nope I am right....
as usual :-P

user136984
Yeah, just looked it up, they have starch when they are green and that turns to sugar when they get ripe.

user136984
But apparently they are still considered better for you when they are greener.

user136984
9:44 PM
Oh dear, this chest infection is getting worse.

user136984
cough cough

apparently for the sake of your blood pressure...because eating overly ripe banana is like taking a sugar injection into the blood stream.

user136984
Ah

Oh :p

user136984
9:46 PM
Yes, I heard something about Diabetes in relation to the different ripening stages of bananas @TheXed.

@ParanoidPanda it doesnt matter if the bana is green or yellow or over ripened
the ammount of carbonhydrates is same
just a greater ammount of those carbonhydrates is sugar
I can tell because i love to eat bananas and i have diabetes

user136984
Yeah, maybe it's a different thing in terms of Diabetes.

and the impact from whatever stadium is same on me

@Videonauth actually the difference is that in a ripened banana the starch has already broken down into simple sugars, which means it takes the body less to digest them....which is where the risk comes into play...
It is like overdosing on sugar...

still better than running low on bloodsugar :)
which is in fact quite dangerous

9:49 PM
I wouldn't know what that is like sense I am always hyped up on sugar....

user136984
I managed to go for 6 months this year without any more than the sugar I actually need. I'm trying to that again. But it's just that I got ill with the flu and then those fig roles just beat me!

oh on super low bloodsugar you will sleep in and never wake up again because your body couldnt sustain itself , and since injected insulin is different from normal budy produced one yoou blood sugar will sink further and more organs will simply fail to work

Sugar is tough to avoid!

actually that is a lie, I consume very little sugar...stopped drinking soda, only drink unsweetened tea and water....
@Videonauth eat a damn ripe banana!

oh i just did :p
and an apple

9:52 PM
@Videonauth then you are not going to go sleeping beauty on us...(not that there was any risk)

and before i di the thing i hate the most every day

which is?
and....
6 reasons not to throw away banana peels....msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/smart-living/…

user136984
I find that if I just go for 2 weeks with a 'normal' (for Humans) healthy amount of sugar that my body readjusts and I don't crave sugar in the quantities that I did before and I find so many things I used to enjoy just too sweet to eat. Then I also start craving fruit and other more healthy foods and all is good from the point onwards as long as I don't for some silly reason go on a fig role binge when I feel down.

user136984
It's just getting to that 2 week period which is hard.

9:55 PM
@ParanoidPanda that is why we have chocolate...
@Videonauth well I am not overly experienced with drugs...but it doesn't look like heroin?

its insulin

I know, it clearly says it...I was being funny...

well im injecting every day but the high wont come :p

user136984
Actually, if I could just get hold of some really really dark chocolate with very little sugar in it then I think I could just snack on that. But I honestly remember in the past when I used to drink hot chocolate (I still don't know why I went for such a low) and then during that 2 week period it was just torture walking past any cafe. :D

its hard to get your hands on good chocolate (80%+ cacao) most of the ones you get in supermarkets is more fat, palm oil and the smallest ingredient percent wise is cacao. beside oil is one resource which slowly isnt enough for the worlds consumption habits
and to be honest this kind of chocolate tastes wuite bitter
