@Videonauth "man" page answers are the best for getting fast reputation. More so if you are the 1st to answer

my top answer is about "uname" and I had to make the answer longer to be able to submit it ...

@Seth Parameter expansion is POSIX, but it doesn't have ${parameter:start:offset} type

I can do ${parameter:0:some_offset} with printf easily, but had to figure out how to do find arbitrary start point

That's what I got so far

basically pads specific number of ? into variable, and plugs that into ${var##???} prefix removal

This is correct. Start at zero, add x number of ?, remove the x number of chars from left
