@ByteCommander well that's like level 6 (of 9) compression :P
try five lanes into one - that's about level 9 of 9

12:44 AM
Currently I have dual boot system, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. For a while I didn’t log into the Ubuntu partition. Recently I update the Windows 8.1, and went back to try log into the Ubuntu partition. I have been following the steps here to restore grub2. But this time I have not been successful. I do understand the 12.04 is now obsolete. The error I am getting is
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package boot-repair
any thoughts on a fix

@MahendraGunawardena the repositories are long gone for 12.04 the only way to properly fix this i can think of is backing up your data using a USB stick to boot up and do a fresh clean install of a supported version. 16.04 would be a good start since its LTS

@MahendraGunawardena upgrade to a newer release.
no chance in hell of you getting 12.04 stuff anymore since the EOL

Q: How to install software or upgrade from an old unsupported release?

made_in_indiaRecently I have installed an older version of Ubuntu on my old machine. Whenever I try to install any software, I get an error saying it couldn't be found: $ sudo apt-get install vlc Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ...

is deleting sources.list now a recreational sports? askubuntu.com/questions/973706/deleted-sources-list third one in two days, and he even deleted it himself on purpose

It used to be somewhat common for people to uninstall all their kernels (because the autoremove action didn't uninstall old kernels in earlier releases, so people had to select the packages to uninstall manually and sometimes they selected too many). I would call this a step forward.

wait until they uninstall libc

Yeah that one is harder solve by just chrooting in and running the package manager. :)

Do any of you guys know what this little ZIP icon inside of MP4 thumbnails is about?
Running Win7 Pro
I've never seen that before

1:38 AM
this normaly is how a folder inside a zip file looks like?
or a file which si still zipped

wat. It's a normal MP4

win 7 and up perfectly unzip stuff without you need to do it

it's not in a ZIP, trust me

ok is it maybe compressed?
or on a compressed filesystem?

if it were compressed the name would be blue in a file explorer

1:40 AM
Unless I was blind before it just started happening recently
and it happens for all MP4s

check if you maybe compressed the desktop folder

wait what the................
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhm
something is very wrong
I increased the icon size and now the little icon in the corner is different!

This is not about Ubuntu. Questions about other Linux distributions can be asked on Unix & Linux, those about Windows on Super User, those about Apple products on Ask Different and generic programming questions on Stack Overflow.

now it's showing the Cinebench icon!
what the heck?!?!
waaaaaaaaat.... at a different zoom level it shows an IE icon.

@KazWolfe wait what? shouldn't questions about windows and apple be discussed at the nearest trashcan?

1:44 AM
lol
Aha
that guy has the exact same issue
kills explorer.exe
aaand now it's back to normal
ok I have no idea what the heck was going on there

hope you have task-manager open or you wont be able to start it again

yeah I had it open
but that seven forums guy had the exact same issue
down to the different icons at different zoom levels
weird
also anybody know why I've been getting so many upgoats on this recently?

because of vitualbox 5.2 and 17.10
my guess

Hey guys, how can I install a package from a previous ubuntu release? I can't just edit the sources.list file directly because I installed a PPA, so I'd need to configure a PPA from said previous release, right?

is the release still supported ?
means is it not EOL?

Well, it does still show up in the published packages (it's gns3: launchpad.net/~gns3/+archive/ubuntu/ppa)
Not sure if that's what you're asking

Ok step 1, add the ppa the normal way sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gns3/ppa

What I want to do specifically is: install gns3-gui from a previous release since there's no available package for artful (the one I'm running)
Alright, done

step two edit the file it created in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ to point to the release you want to point to
if its zesty replace all mentions of artful with zesty in that file

2:33 AM
I thought I'd screw up things my doing that. Alright, give me a bit

shoudl look like this
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gns3/ppa/ubuntu YOUR_UBUNTU_VERSION_HERE main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/gns3/ppa/ubuntu YOUR_UBUNTU_VERSION_HERE main
replace your_ubuntu_version with the one you want to point to

Yep, done

ok now sudo apt update

Oh, it already shows up in apt-cache :)
Thanks man!

you should install it, then sudo apt-mark hold package_name
then change back the file you just changed
what is important that you hold all the files that have ben installed with it

2:36 AM
!!google apt-mark

otherwise you might get it overwritten, or simply let the file for now point to the back version
apt-mark can be used as a unified front-end to set various settings for a package, such as marking a package as being automatically/manually installed or changing dpkg selections such as hold, install, deinstall and purge which are respected e.g. by apt-get dselect-upgrade or aptitude.

Hm, it's saying something about not having python installed (?)
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gns3-gui : PreDepends: python3.4 but it is not installable or
python3.5 but it is not installable
Depends: gns3-server but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Is it having trouble finding my python installation from a different release?

you can install python3.5 from the repos, 17.10 has normaly python 3.6
and has dropped python 2.7 from being a system driver
so this is installed neither
on a second thought if that has no artful release yet dont change back the file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d
it only would give you errors if you try to do a normal update

Shouldn't it be able to run with python3.6?
Looking up how to install a specific version

yes it should but the .deb file has a dependency given in its configuration dile and as soon this dependency isnt fulfilled it throws that error
sure you could hack the deb files one by one changing this but this is kinda tedious

2:44 AM
Oh I see... Thanks!

dpkg-deb -R package.deb tmp unpacks a deb file into a folder called tmp

Wait, but in order to install an older python version, I'll need to do this same hack for it, right?

no shouldnt be needed
uh oh, well or find a ppa for 3.5.2
it seems python3.5 is not in the repositories
how many files have been installed by this action now?
is it only one file/package?

I installed python3.5 from the deb file directly

and does it work?

2:49 AM
Hm, didn't work. Same error

then uninstall it with dpkg -r package
well only way would be to hack the deb files i guess
how many packages did your wanted software have?

Sorry, what do you mean?

does not seem to work , and lldb package is not in the mains at all
the software you wanted to install? gs .. whatever? how many packages this install installed ?

It intalled none, the installation failed because it didn't meet the dependency requirements, I guess
I'll try to install python3.5 from source

well in worst case you can revert this by apt remove package , so you dont have to run apt install -f
if you dont get it to run i mean

2:57 AM
Yeah, but I really need this hehe
Last resort I guess is... Waiting for a proper release
Thank you for your help anyway :)
I'm sort of a newbie around ubuntu, but it has grown on me

Q: bind CapsLock to Control on Ubuntu

Liu ShaI googled this topic and a lot of people suggesting setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps I put this line into my .bashrc. However, frequently this key binding is disabled automatically. This happens randomly when I am doing other things. It is the most annoying when I am using vim, a lot of key mapp...

other way would be, to download the .deb files for gsn and hack those to ask for higher python version, but after i sa w you wanted to install python3-lldb im not so sure if this would work
if you really rely on this software then mabe being on a LTS version of ubuntu would be better for you, long term support and stable environment

Alright, python 3.5 is definitely installed now, but gns3 outputs the same error
Yeah, I wasn't aware of all this incompatibility issues
I just blindly updated it

like i said it probably asks for the version exactly being in the zesty repos

Not the smartest decision

3:02 AM
mhmm can you revert your python installation? hope you had it installed in /opt/
you could add the complete sources.list files for zesty and do apt pinning

the 3.5 you mean? I downloaded the source to /usr/src and did the auto install, basically

means mainly pin your system on being on artfull but then install the package and so on you would need for your software with ... apt install package -t zesty

That seems like a good solution

this would pin those packages needed to the zesty version, but before you screw up maybe best to take a backup of your data

the plot thickens
I think I'm just going to install the LTS version
Take the easy dumb route

3:05 AM
the hardest problem for me is i dont see your machine and the state its in you know i have to do head cinema here to imagine it :)
i guess you rely on it work wise ?

It's for university
what kind of information would you need?
Or is it just not worth it?

no its the overall situation i not need information otherwise i would have asked, but yes the most hassle free and easy way out is to stay on the LTS if you depend on that software, this way you know it runs flawlessly

I have a lab exam in 3 days, so I think the easy dumb route is the way to go here

yep, fixing all that takes maybe hours whith the risk of it failing in the end while a fresh install and getting your backed up data back on the machine may take an hour max

Yep, well. Thanks for all your help anyway :) I should sleep now
Half-asleep attempts at fixing this aren't worth it

3:09 AM
your certainly welcome

Goodnight kind stranger!

Yeh you too, i should head to bed now too its 4:30 am

I love that the Mingw-w64 package for Qt 5 is an entire GB in size before unpacking.
That's a significant amount of disk space.
This package is taking a while to unpack - even though it's on an SSD.
I'd hate to see how slow it was on a mechanical drive.

ah how I love Python virtual environments xD
seriously I have python 3.6 without impacting my core environment, and god do I love having that lying around...

@glennjackman @waltinator @EricCarvalho @dessert @CharlesGreen questions about shell scripting, writing scripts to manage files, text parsing etc are all perfectly on topic here and always have been. Please don't vote to close such questions as off topic!

11:55 AM
hello all :)
@terdon again about bash scripts? :P

Yes. I've seen an upsurge of mistaken closevoting on this sort of thing again recently.

yep and i see in close vote que alot of close votes on questions which have been perfectly on topic at the time they have been asked
no comments why they believe they are OT now nothing only close flagged/voted

@Videonauth I haven't followed the discussion but might that be an attempt to confuse some sort of auto flagging system?
And hello all

Might be, i just vote to leave open on them because i see no benefit in closing them, except they are 3-6 years old and have no answer then a may not be reproducible might be ok

Acer replaced my screen and my motherboard but apparently they also felt the need to replace my stickers and serial numbers

12:09 PM
I hope you agree with me here @terdon
oh they replaced stickers ?????
I would have been so mad then

Well I dont have any stickers of my own on my laptop but somehow my intel sticker grew back on after I removed it. I think they may have replaced my entire system
Fine by me as it did solve the issue of the screen no longer working but I'm not sure why that took them nearly 3 weeks.

@Videonauth ? Closing abandoned questions describing a problem that can no longer be reproduced seems fine, yes

lol ok i canve a huge sticker collection on my laptops lid and i would be furious as hell if they would simply disappear, each of those stickers is a storyy in its own
@terdon yes but i see a large amount of close votes/flags on questions which are perfectly fine
just aged

Yeah, that doesn't seem right.

Ugh I keep forgetting how difficult it's to get caffe working again.
Does this mean anything to any of you : /usr/bin/ld: .build_release/tools/compute_image_mean.o: undefined reference to symbol '_ZN6google15SetUsageMessageERKNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEEE'
//usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgflags.so.2: error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line
?

12:13 PM
i ususally vote to leave open but i home im not the only one who thinks like this

I think it's usually best to stay on the side of caution and keep things open when in doubt.

^^ This
AU is special in this regard. I don't think I've ever seen an SE site that goes to such lengths to find reasons to close questions.

hehehe i spend most of my time on close vote que spending time finding reasons to keep em open lol

@Videonauth Yhea I looked at that and tried the thing suggested by BoomFan commented on Jan 19 and kvmanohar22 commented on May 25 but neither worked.

ah ok
i just googled the complete error message
it throws up more results

12:18 PM
It does? When I google it I get my own question on this site back and the one you linked.

can anyne explain me why this question is unclear? --> askubuntu.com/q/973529/522934 ; man I'm not the brightest lamp in the shed and i was able to answer it, so its not unclear

Poor grammer/word choice but otherwise seems clear to me

this is what i see every day in close vote que
sorry for my rant, just this makes me very upset

I think very often that sort of language use signals a bad question, I think that is because it suggests a poor grasp of the English language which comes with either being young or being inexperienced with English in a technical setting. Both often come from people asking bad questions so the instinct to quickly vote to close when you see that sort of english might be quickly formed

Well might be, if i have to look at a wall of text which i find unpleasant to read, i begin editing it, cut it in smaller chunks etc
and im not english native

12:24 PM
reopened

@terdon thank you
i really wonder how many of salvagable questions we close every day

Probably quite a few, several of my first stackexchange questions were closed but using the information gained from the closed questions I was able to ask new questions on the same topic that were got answers and upvotes.
By the way if any of you wish to help me get caffe running I made a question here askubuntu.com/questions/973875/…

i dialog would be good, windows like, when you close as unclear, you shoudl answer at least three times is this question really unclear= Go and reread it! :P
for me a question is at one point unclear, if i can not gather enough information from it to answer it
and the OP does not revisit his question to answer comments asking for clraification

I think it should be easier to reopen questions closed as unclear, maybe have it disappear from the new questions tab until the question is edited rather then close it completely?
That way as long as OP attends his question it will not stay closed because it's unclear, after all OP is working to provide the missing information.

well ok it is installed, just wanted to make sure you not only had the normal lib installed

But I do see a lot of 2.6's while the latest version of protobuf is 3.4
Then again 2.6 is the default in the ubuntu repos

1 question is getting me 200+ rep on 2 days :-P

that could be, that this sysmbols simply does not exist in lower versions, and yes the install instructions for ubuntu < 17.04 does not mention any special in that regard
@Rinzwind yes because it was in the hot topics for those two days, i guess it will slow down eventually, if you speak of the swap question :)

@Rinzwind which question?

1:02 PM
@Videonauth you got it correct :=)

:) i see everything :p
another easy question, easy answer case simply, where loads of people look at and vote

yep this one ;)

yes that one :)

i sadly was a bit late for that party :)
at the point i saw this answer, the damage was done already, rinzwind had already answered :p

1:06 PM
muru was quicker than me >:)

well serious now: as i saw it there where already plenty of answers where i could hardly add anything

muru is doing well too on 24 :)

Hmm I think I broke something make: *** No rule to make target '/usr/local/include/google/protobuf/stubs/common.h', needed by '.build_release/cuda/src/caffe/layers/batch_reindex_layer.o'. Stop.

yeah seems like it, in those cases i start over with a fresh source
retracing the steps done making sure all is intalled etc
still waiting on the 16.04 VM to be installed
grmls the image is corrupted, redownloading

And unrelated to anything today 100 years were the start of the October revolutions which brought communism to Russia.

Wait till I'm done with my research and the cost of labor for creative work drops to nearly 0.

well no offense meant here :)

If I can get this stupid thing working that is....
I wonder what will happen in some future when more and more jobs are automated.

I rather wonder if we will see this future or if we are not wiped out by then due to our own stupidity :)

I have faith, after all we made it through the cold war and climate chance is now finally being taken somewhat seriously.

1:30 PM
yes cold war is what i'm talking about, we are just barely behind that and again two countries threat each other with total annihilation and destruction, as if we didn't learn from the past

Yes but I think various incidents do suggests that most individuals will not choose to launch the nukes

yep most won'T join in i guess but the nuclear fallout will hit us all if this happens
lately i saw a nice documentation about chernobyl and this was just a small amount there and it already would have been enough to wipe out europe with radioactivity

Well right now the only nuclear nation that I see actually dropping nukes is North Korea which probably can only wipe out a few cities.

and wast parts of soviet russia

Hmm modern nuclear reactors are designed to be a lot saver then that though

1:35 PM
I still hope that chubby kid with the bad hairstyle is knowing that this would be the last thing he does
:)

I think he does, he needs the US to be the bad guy as more and more foreign media is getting into NK weakening his position.
And Trump is playing right into that card

agreed
I think best solution would be to deplay a few satelites over NK and dropping a few million phones and computers with free internet into NK :)
the problem then will sove itself out

I think whatever solution is taken a careful plan should be in place to deal with the situation after, NK does have a few resources and a fairly high literacy rate but it's still going to generate a massive refugee stream.

It will as every other war did in the past and present

Sure but it is a good idea to be prepared because we know this will happen at some points, especially if we start dropping phones in.

1:42 PM
Trump has made another weird comment to the japanese

Again?

yep, and i believe putting even more sanctions would be a bad idea

Anyway I'm going for a run while my compiler keeps chugging on, see ya all!

see you

1:43 PM
In Japan death by guns are less than 10 a year
bye!

will fiddle over that caffe problem in a vm for a bit too
@Rinzwind there was some year where german poilice has shot 39 rounds in active duty and only one was not a warning shot
over a whole year

LOL
Same in holland

lets see the statistics for this year in the US coughs coughs
Im happy that we have such strict gun and weapon laws here
but beside that becomming a police officer here in germany means being schooled for almost 5 years before you even get a chance for active duty
guess that merely the same all over europe

2:02 PM
@Videonauth I wish. . . Greek cops are, ehm, not very sophisticated.
Not too many deaths by guns though, that at least we do have.
Enough so that when cops do kill someone it usually makes the news.

Is the Night Light feature available in Ubuntu GNOME 16.04? I tried installing the GNOME desktop environment on Xubuntu 16.04, but couldn't find it there. I'm considering switching to Ubuntu GNOME, but I don't wanna upgrade to 17.10. 17.04 would be alright though. Can I get this feature on any *buntu distribution while staying at 16.04 or 17.04?

@Revetahw you can use redshift
sudo apt install redshift redshift-gtk
and then put a config file into ~/.config/redshift.conf Example config
A configuration file with the name `redshift.conf' can optionally be placed in `~/.config/'. The file has standard INI format. General program options are placed under the `redshift' header, while options for location providers and adjustment methods are placed under a header with the name of that provider or method. General options are: temp-day = integer Daytime temperature temp-night = integer Night temperature transition = 0 or 1 Disable or enable transitions brightness-day = 0.1-1.0 Screen brightness at daytime brightness-night = 0.1-1.0 Screen brightness at night gamma = R:G:B Gamma adjustment to apply adjustment-method = name Select adjustment method. Options for the adjustment method can be given under the configuration file heading of the same name. location-pro

@Videonauth alright. I'm aware of Redshift. Do you know if there is any difference in functionality between Redshift and Night Light?

its not much difference nightlight will work with a wayland installation, but since youre on 16.04 or 17.04 it wont matter much
they are basically doing the same
shifting the colors into the red spectrum at night and mor to blue at day

Ok. I always preferred the colour of f.lux to the red color of Redshift. Does Night Light have the same color as Redshift? Can the color of Redshift be configured?

never tried it, im so used by now to redshift that it feels weird even switching it off

user136984
