Do other DEs use CTRL + ALT to issue quick commands?

user136984
Of certain types that is.

@Seth remember to turn off automatic media downloads in allo :p

@ParanoidPanda what type ?

@edwinksl why?

@Seth i don't want my data bill to explode

9:02 PM
Unity does have Ctrl + Alt commands , like Ctrl + Atl + Arrows to navigate viewports

user136984
@Serg: Like r to restart the Shell.

user136984
On GNOME is you press that command alone somewhere to enter quick commands is launched. Is that just GNOME then?

@edwinksl ah. right. I just leave data off.
But I still have no one to talk to lol

user136984
How would you go about restarting the Shell on Unity then?

@ParanoidPanda I'm sorry?

9:03 PM
@Seth i don't need to download a super duper high res 200 MB cat pic while i am on 4G...

haha nope.

@ParanoidPanda logout and log back in

well. TIL how to fix a bricked flash drive from within Windows instead of having to boot Linux.

user136984
@Seth: Whoops! Sorry, meant to ping @Serg there! :)

@Seth you can add me if you want to play with allo. feel free to remove me once you are done testing

9:04 PM
@edwinksl doesn't that require swapping phone numbers?

@Seth it does but i trust you don't do anything fishy with my phone number

@edwinksl well I will consider it. Now that I got this flash drive working I desperately need to do homework though.

@ParanoidPanda log out with Ctrl + Alt + Del and then log back in. Simplest and less messy

user136984
@Serg: Right, thanks! :)

@Seth right, seth != zach

9:07 PM
lol

user136984
Right, anyway, goodnight folks! :)

sleep tight, Mr. Panda

@Zanna: I had some very nice Vegan food today and almost walked out of a shop without paying because the taste made me forget about everything else! :D

Q: "HTTPS Everywhere" browser add-on breaks site updates (websocket?)

Byte CommanderI run Firefox 49 on Ubuntu 16.04. When I enable the "HTTPS Everywhere" add-on in my browser, Stack Exchange sites stop updating automatically. That means on the main site, I do not get the N questions with new activity banners, on questions I miss the N new answers to this question, and also the...

@Zanna Can you please take a look at question askubuntu.com/questions/824528/… I need help soloving it!

9:31 PM
I think your problem there is the pipe @vayacondios2015
I am not really sure

@ByteCommander why are you using pipe ?
find . -name *.* | xargs -0 zgrep -E '/Jan/2016'
USe exec

Q: Upgrade problem /Kubuntu

zirkoxdI am trying to upgrade through terminal ( preference ) and I still got this error which I have not seen yet. I am using Ubuntu KDE (Kubuntu 16.04 xenial ). Thanks for help. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages we...

find . -name "*.gz" -exec zgrep -E '/Jan/2016' +
Oh wait . . .that wasn't your question . . .

@Serg wrong ping?

9:36 PM
@ByteCommander yeah

@ByteCommander serg needs coffee

super double triple ping

heh, my bad

I need new brain . . .and coffee
@Zanna for loop was not necessary there . Find is recursive

9:37 PM
sudo apt install --reinstall brain coffee

@Serg I only corrected error in waltinator's script there

find $HOME/Desktop/logs/ -type f -exec zgrep -E '/Jan/2016/ +

taking a break, see you later or good night... not sure yet.

hmm certainly we don't need to use a test to see if $d is a directory if we are using find
oh but...
nm I can hardly remember what all that was about :)

Also, why in the bloody heck does that OP ask 4 questions in one ?
This is against rules
One question per post

9:41 PM
I answered only Q2
it is all the same Q in a way

@vayacondios2015 for future reference, use only one question per post. Otherwise, you're risking to get your question closed as too broad
Yearling badge on U&L \ o/

@vayacondios2015 it seems to be telling you to use | xargs --null instead of | xargs -0 - I thought it was the same, but have you tried both?

@Zanna they're the same
even in man page

I think maybe they lost whichever one they used, looking at the error ;)
the reason for the for loop is to create an outfile compiled from the results from each directory @Serg
for each directory do find & write this file of the results from find
@ParanoidPanda oh yes, where was that?

10:00 PM
interesting piece of history unix.stackexchange.com/questions/34196/…

or to be complete, for everything at/this/place, if it's a directory, do find some files and zgrep them for this and write the results to a file... I think find cannot do that
I think Serg left
@edwinksl lol nice comment

@edwinksl yup, I've read that one a while ago. Makes sense, unlike what we have today

i will never get used to hjkl...
destined to be vim noob forever

tbh I allmost rm -r * on ~ one day when I wanted to empty my playground, I didn't realise I had cd .. some time before... I actually typed it and just glanced at my prompt to double check before hitting return
@edwinksl do you know Vim Adventures?

@edwinksl buy arrow keys stickers and put them onto your keyboard. Problem solved

10:04 PM
@Zanna yeah i am aware of its existence but i haven't tried it :p
@Serg but i am a gamer at heart, so WASD and arrow keys are my thing. i might remap hjkl to ijkl as my colleague suggested :p

That's clever

vim is kind and doesn't care if you use the arrow keys anyway though....

@Zanna but the watchful eyes of the vim gods judge me daily for doing that

lol true

Well, if it's VIM , you can use keys alright, but if it's vim-tiny or the legacy vi . . . well, you better know how to use them hjkl keys
Also same on cygwin
@Zanna I might look into that question once i have enough brain power

10:10 PM
or maybe i should sudo apt install emacs

@edwinksl I have a better idea
sudo apt purge emacs
:P

Mix of emacs and vim
best of both worlds . . . even though i don't know what's best in emacs world

I only know nano and I'm happy with it.

@Serg I think their problem is just losing the --null option on the right side of the pipe... I will comment as such

Well, actually I don't even know most of nano's shortcuts, but at least they're written down in the bottom of the screen :)

10:17 PM
@ByteCommander you also use nano for all your coding?

Only if I had to code in text mode.
Mostly PyCharm for Python, larger Bash scripts mainly in Gedit.

I am writing essays in vim these days hahaha
bedtime now :)
later all

I use vim pretty much for everything. I switched form nano. If I need special formatting, then it's usually WPS office

Yup, it does
$ apt moo

10:24 PM
I'm an avid emacs user.

@ByteCommander I've done that before :P

Bad command or file name

@Windows3.1 shuddup

10:30 PM
del /q C:\*

File "COMMAND.COM" is read only. It can not be deleted.

I don't think DOS had a reboot command...

CTRL+ALT+DEL...

That's not a command :P
That requires physical input.

It just requires a "user" device which can be plugged into the "chair" module right in front of the "screen" and "keyboard" connectors.

10:33 PM
@NathanOsman shutdown /r
That's the command

Isn't that for Windows?
Let's try this then >:)
attrib -r command.com
del /q C:\*
There. Boom.

there is an echo commmand that restarts DOS
Im' trying to find it

My Dos skills degraded to some "dir" and "cd" over time...

Same for me

@ByteCommander I always invariable type ls into a DOS prompt and then remember I'm in front of a "dumb" terminal.

10:35 PM
:D
Yeah, it doesn't even have a cat command.

At least PowerShell has ls.

@NathanOsman spawn powershell from cmd , and use ls there

on DOS 6?

yeah
here it is
try ECHO G=FFFF:0000 ¦ DEBUG
only on DOS 6
C:\>

running shutdown now, good night folks.

10:39 PM
@ByteCommander restart me

gah. AT commands ;-;
what
someone made a windows 3.1 bot?

That's an actual guy

10:45 PM
oh, it's James.
@Serg brb installing sudo insults on all of the images for our servers

sudo insult get_person.random() ?

i wonder if it works on non-sudoers

that is such a confusing command

because if it does...

hello

10:56 PM
Yo

how are you doing man?

I'm alright, at work
How's your kernel adventure ?

I finished compiling yesterday, trying to install and check if it boots
where are you working now @Serg?

@IanC same as before - my university's computer lab. Official title is "Lab Technician" but in reality we're just "front desk" people. I applied for internship and went to interview on Monday. That job is the "actual" technican, same as what my supervisors do
So yeah, I'm taking classes, back to working in labs. Everything is back to normal

I HATE FIREFOX!!!!!!!

11:08 PM
i want to work in my lab
"financial aid only" they say

[code]sudo apt purge firefox[/code]

this is not heathen BBCode country -.-

@Serg cool man! How did the interview go?

@Seth so James doesn't have access and he sent a message to Marco. Still haven't heard anything yet. In the meantime, I've got a ton of commits for the app ready to be pushed when I have access.

@IanC I don't think i did too well. I answered questions alright, since i know the interviewers - my two supervisors. The 20 minute test was kinda bad. We have something known as Smart Classroom setup. It's basically computer plus projector, plus some video switches and stuff. I figured out the ethernet was disconnected at a switch but didn't realize the adapter was disabled at software level
I managed to get projector and PC connected to HDMI switch, but ran out of time
So basically I got like 1/4 of the task necessary

11:12 PM
@NathanOsman um github.com/AskUbuntu
James totally has access. He's reviewed my pull requests before too.

gah my sound doesnt work

@Serg when on windows, always open devmgmt.msc

gah this is making me sick of ubuntu. cant have one install without an error

Blame UEFI!

wish more applications worked on Fedora
I am about to just get it anyway. SOOOO tired of Ubuntu's antics

11:15 PM
@Serg I don't think those tasks are focused in evaluating technical skills, are they? I mean, usually they want to see how do you work with others, how do you approach problems, etc

@Windows3.1 then go back to fedora
Or vista.

about to

@KazWolfe I opened command and ran ifconfig . I was just tired that day and didn't realize the ethernet adapter was disconnected. I was literally looking at the answer, but it didn't register in my mind. I mean, my supervisor called me for interview in afternoon. I mean , I had no time to prep whatsoever

maybe you think you didn't do good because you didn't finish the task, but you could have made a good impression on how you were handling it

@KazWolfe maybe I can blame UEFI because my Ubuntu MATE on BIOS doesnt cause a lot of issues
on the contrary it caused issues on my HP

11:17 PM
@IanC well, it's a technical position - basically going around and fixing stuff , so yeah, they wanna see technical aspects .

and so did ubuntu unity and xubuntu

step 1: Blame UEFI, no matter the issue.

@Seth yeah, but not to add users.

@NathanOsman Ahh.

Yes, he's a member, but not with the right privileges.

11:17 PM
step 1 : I blame Windows.
9

@KazWolfe would you rather I blame Ubuntu?
gah

UEFI transcends time and space and all technical possibility to cause any computer problem ever.

Because if it was on Linux, I'd totally run ip addr

@Serg That works for just about anything.

Uefi and Ubuntu and Ugly both begin with U lol

11:18 PM
@Serg Install linux on lab pc.

xubuntu is pretty though.

@Windows3.1 Unix & Linux

@KazWolfe Even Vista?

I would love to do that, but they're stubborn XD

but devmgmt puts a nice warning by anything disabled @Serg
@NathanOsman Any computer problem ever.

11:19 PM
Wow.
Even hardware?

Dropped your computer? UEFI changed gravity.
Power surge? UEFI on controller/transformer somewhere

shuddup

cool, I forgot to install the modules, ended up on a initrafms console during boot on the compiled kernel

BIOS boot sector corrupt? That's, you guessed it, BIOS's fault!

I'm starting to feel like the clueless dog meme

11:21 PM
SEEEEEEETTTTTTTHHHHHHHHH
The capybaras are too quiet!

@IanC eventually you will figure this out :D

@KazWolfe I'm working on it, I'm working on it...
Patience my good man.

I'll keep trying, the only bad thing is that each try costs me 4 hours of compilation hahaha @Serg

We totally need oneboxing for polls.

11:24 PM
@KazWolfe is so loyal to UEFI that he will even tear down Ubuntu to hold it's reputation, whereas @NathanOsman, a developer, loves Ubuntu too much
:P

no....

@IanC stop spamming my polls!!!!!!!!!

i know what the problem is

now we KNOW who it is!

and usually it's not UEFI

11:26 PM
Usually the problem is the user . . .

if it's after boot, it's never UEFI.

If it's during boot, it's either a bad UEFI implementation or the user messed up.

Dat poll.

@NathanOsman if it's not you or @Serg it is @IanC
I doubt it's nathan
and @serg.... so-so prob not

11:27 PM
lol, I just opened this poll

@Windows3.1 I did vote there :p UEFI it is

@Serg yeah, but are you causing the spam?

@Windows3.1 Nope. You should have disabled that in the first place

This is getting fun.

11:29 PM
@KazWolfe It is not my fault!

I'm not talking about you
I'm talking about in general
For the poll I posted, assume:

- Good UEFI implementation
- Fresh Ubuntu install
- Any given user

my sound quit
my mouse dies after wakeup
computer's slow
I didnt do anything

OR
is the spammer
@KazWolfe??

woah. sane results!
@Windows3.1 nope. internet sucks too much to do that

11:32 PM
@IanC speak up. you were around last time this was happening

ping is wayyyyy too high.

I don't even know what's happening lol

@IanC and @serg was not
@IanC yes you do
you are spamming our polls!

^ correction, your poll
Kaz's poll works perfectly fine

@edwinksl wut

11:33 PM
yep. well, i included the actual answer so...

spam it @IanC

@Zacharee1 admit it

@edwinksl he wasnt there when the first link was shared

you can't just blame too things you hate.

Now who could @Windows3.1 be....

11:34 PM
Nobody voted for UEFI :P

@NathanOsman why would you not vote for UEFI

@Zacharee1 That would be @JamesTobin

hah. the Ubuntu voter changed to UEFI.

@KazWolfe I wonder what this word "sarcasm" means...
how did UEFI go to 0

11:35 PM
somebody can't decide , i see

yeah... that seems like @JamesTobin
it doesn't matter. "The User" is still in the lead
by a lot

I am James Tobin

we know

then why doesnt fedora and ubuntu fail on me?

you're not using Ubuntu.
You're using ChaletOS.

11:38 PM
@KazWolfe NO!
@KazWolfe xubuntu

Oh?

I actually removed chalet os
and put on the official xubuntu

Output of lsb_release please

but unity gave me trouble tool
*too
james@james-hp:~$ lsb_release
No LSB modules are available.
james@james-hp:~$

and lsb_release -a?

11:39 PM
@NathanOsman, you're more experienced with kernel/module programming. This guy will need a module to accomplish what he is asking right? Since there are some pages in memory only accessable/editable by kernel-mode programs? askubuntu.com/questions/828297/…

james@james-hp:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial
james@james-hp:~$
dunno why it says that. it's xubuntu

If I have 2 disks, 1 with Windows and 1 I'm installing Linux on, should I out the bootloader on the 1st or 2nd hard drive?

@Seth if EFI, it doesn't matter

The first (with Windows), right?

which bootloader, Mr Typo?

11:40 PM
@IanC It will definitely need to be done from kernel-space, that's for sure.

@KazWolfe computer from 2005.

If legacy, then either again, but you're gonna need to set your boot order to whichever
Ideally, I'd put it on the Ubuntu drive, though

@Seth So that's a no. If it has SATA, it still doesn't really matter, but PATA is better with the master drive

11:41 PM
@Zacharee1 both SATA.

@Seth OK. For consistency's sake, put the Ubuntu drive and GRUB in SATA 0 and Windows on SATA 1

@NathanOsman, by the way, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of modules did you program? like, some specific driver?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 that bot is amazing XD

It doesn't really matter, since you can change the order in BIOS, but just try that @Seth

11:42 PM
@IanC Just a simple USB driver for a LED.

@Serg what bot

one of the reasons I'm compiling a kernel on VM, besides actually learning how to compile a kernel, is to get a kernel with MODVERSIONING, so I can follow some module tutorials without having to use the same kernel as the tutorial
@NathanOsman, opening the link!

captured my pionter :O

11:43 PM
@Serg whose bot is that

@KazWolfe that is interesting, but nothing like the real thing :P
but yeah play with it :)

i have it on hardware

@NathanOsman seems cool! The module is used by an application to set the LED on when there is new email?

@KazWolfe that blue icon guy

huh. wolfbot is still more useful imo

11:46 PM
@IanC Something like that, yes.

@KazWolfe probably , but the random nonsense this guy spits out is fun
Ah, anyway

speaking of wolfbot
i need ideas

I still have like 3 and something hours to go

@KazWolfe make me admin

no

11:49 PM
pls

i'm too lazy to get the command
and i'm not giving out mod powers

:p

i have no blue name so i have no authority

deleted data on command.com, exited and got this
crashed it lol
all the data on C:\windows
gah
firefox just crashed...
and I'm sure it was user fault

and i just broke prod2. again.
woo.

11:54 PM
lel

well prod3 hit so... yay?

what's all this?
prod stuff?

at least failover testing worked
prod = production server

@KazWolfe I have just finished making my fedora live disk :)
Fedora Cinnamon

okay?

11:58 PM
I guess it takes over my HP :P
dont panic tho I stil have ubuntu mate on my desktop

i'm not panicking. you get to choose what os you run
