1:00 AM
i'll be afk in a bit anyways
heading home soon.
Eiter way, yeah. VLANs are your friend here, and i can find a whole host of other things you should be doing.

The double line needs a compatible switch on both ends. So that's two. Then, that switch, coming from one corner of the shop, has to run to another switch (since it would be stupid to run 4 or 5 cables the distance instead of one) which goes to a WAP in the shop (so four, sorry), a desktop in the shop, and then to the other area of the shop.
The other area of the shop needs a rather large switch for: the server, the shopcam, the CNC controller, and some other devices I can't remember
We have a lot of isolated areas with only one line to them, so at least one switch is needed per room

... how big is this shop?!
And for God's sake... Run multiple wires!

The same area as the house, except one story instead of 2+basement+attic
@KazWolfe multiple wires makes no sense though. One wire to each room and then a switch for that is much more organized

It's better than 40 switches everywhere
but then again, you're talking to an enterprise network engineer, so...
No... it is not.
That is way too much overhead.

These things aren't downloading movies in their off-time
and it's not like they're all copying files all the time
we do need to rewire it, but running multiple cables just doesn't work in this building
we had enough trouble getting a cable into my room

1:04 AM
eh, well, like i said. $40/hr and i'll fix all of this crap, including running wires

We'd be down 160000
:p

i'm okay with that.

@Zacharee1 are you going to pay for kaz's flight too

plus, i do work in smart ways lol

AU meetup hype

1:05 AM
I'm not @KazWolfe

you already have one wire going to each room. Get a Cat6 bundle and tie to one end. Pull through.

So then the line that runs up to my room goes to a switch in my closet because that's where the line is. From that switch, the WAP goes one way to the corner of my room by the hall door. The other way goes to the switch on my desk, which runs my laptop and the HALLOWEEN computer

your network is... no.
this just makes me so sad. It's a waste of network :(

The line that runs to my dad's room has to go to a switch. There's just no way to avoid that. He has a work laptop, a server, another computer, two printers, a laptop he uses wired, and other temp machines
The office has a printer, two computers, a WAP, the lines to the shop, the line to my room, the line to my dad's room, the line to the livingroom

why... do you need so many computers.

1:08 AM
the livingroom has my server

your network just makes me really sad hearing about it.

@KazWolfe we didn't buy them. Most of them were leftovers from my old school and my dad's job

protip: virtualization
or blade servers

@KazWolfe like I said, we do need to rewire and organize it. It's just that, for the most part, extra wiring doesn't work
@KazWolfe we don't have very powerful computers. My dad makes a good amount per year, but maintaining the house takes most of it (no, not the network aspect). DSL+Cable is expensive, electric (electric heating in the shop) for two buildings

but do bring in a network expert.
or just have me do remote consulting for reconf.

1:10 AM
Yes, remote consult, where we have no cell reception and we're about to take down our network :p

because there's a lot you can do to optimize what you have.

That I know and I've said about three times, but rewiring is out of the question for the most part

even with your 400 switches, there's still some room for optimization.
like vlans, for god's sake

But isolation won't work!
This isn't different departments of a corporation

it's not for isolation. It's for organization and to get them off your main network

1:12 AM
But why? The whole thing is our main network

When you do vlans in this case, you're just going to assign the management IP of switches to the management VLAN.
All your devices will still be on a single subnet (though I would put your workshop on its own).
yes, you can have subnets access each other no problem.

I know that

@Zacharee1 for your meta post about reviewing, i already cast CVs as much as i can, so i don't really to join :p
i will just keep doing my own thing

@edwinksl noo, we need you to come help in a group

why would that matter

1:18 AM
Because then we can close them quicker
Sorry
dunno how else to make rooms

a lot of work has been done to reduce number of unanswered questions there

hmm
good idea

so it is kinda related to what you have in mind

How do I stay joined in a room?

i just leave the tab on, lol
is there a better way? i don't know

1:21 AM
idk
some people have huge lists of currently joined rooms
I can't imagine they're all open in tabs
@edwinksl -_-

@Zacharee1 ask someone like journeymangeek lol
he is in tens of rooms, so he must have figured it out

@JourneymanGeek hao du ^^^
@edwinksl you're not a very good bot..

yeah seriously

pretty sure you stay in the room even if you close the tab

but you know what, google does occasionally think i am a damn bot and wants me to do captcha

1:23 AM
@insert_name_here not forever
@edwinksl lolzers
Well I tried favoriting the room
maybe that'll let me stay

@insert_name_here but i think you get logged out of the room after some period of inactivity

Q: Improve Xubuntu Panel for grey background

James TobinI have made a .png file with the background color of windows 98 taskbar and have set it as the background for xfce's panel. However the text on the menu and the time as well as the bluetooth, wifi, and volume icons are white, and the panel's gray is too close to white, therefore the colors do no...

Nathan Awsome-man has left

1:47 AM
@Zacharee1 I just stay in the room. :p

@JourneymanGeek can you get to 3k on AU already :p

I updated that question with image
forgot to upload the image before

hey @JourneymanGeek what do you think about moving to the US for a position?

@KazWolfe depends on the position and the company

2:02 AM
meh pay, startup

Q: Replace preinstalled Win10 with Ubuntu without activating licence

ed0I'm buying a new PC, and would like to change Windows with Ubuntu, planning to later get a refund of the licence key (€60 or so). I'm new to this UEFI issue, and wondering how I'll be able to disable it without going through Windows (thus activating the licence and voiding any claim of refund). A...

er...

I might consider. Meh pay is an issue if I need to move.

isn't the license baked in to the machine and unremovable.

@JourneymanGeek wat???

@Zacharee1 home system is on when I am at work.

@KazWolfe yes. If you wanna buy a computer, you can't return the product key, even if it wasn't in the BIOS ROM
@JourneymanGeek still

2:05 AM
yeah, i was about to say... i don't think this guy is getting a refund.

I have backups and data syncs running then. I also have a low power Linux box if I needed persistent connections
@KazWolfe actually people have done that.

will post answer.
wat.
how?! They don't return a key, and they can reuse it whenever.

Should close. Legal not Ubuntu issue
@KazWolfe Eu law iirc

k brb posting US answer.

pain in the butt to do tho
@KazWolfe ^

2:09 AM
This refund seems unenforcable.
Because it comes from the factory pre-activated.
So the license is already used, even if you actually never agreed to the EULA. Plus, there's no way to prove that you're not just going to put Windows back on...

Personally if I didn't want windows, I'd find a system without it.....
@KazWolfe this is why it's a legal question....

I still don't really think you can in the US...
When I got my computer, I never agreed to any EULA explicitly.
> **Note:** This answer does not necessarily reflect EU laws, but it is valid to US laws to the best of my knowledge. I am not a lawyer, and this is not replacement for actual legal counsel for this issue.

The short answer is, you can't.

If you bought this computer new and it didn't come with an actual product key, the key itself came bundled with the computer and the computer's BIOS. As there's no way to remove this key, you technically can't return anything, and there really isn't a way to invalidate this OEM key, as computers come from the factory pre-activated with the license already
okay answer?

oh, this might be intresting
I forgot about the time change...
Hope I can take a day off of work then...
@Seth got an email back about the user testing ^^

2:31 AM
man, why did I start compiling a kernel, now I want to sleep and I don't have a clue how long will it take to finish

great question...

@Zacharee1 even Linus switched to kde when Gnome 3 came out, then said that Gnome 3 can be usable with a few extensions. What I'm trying to say here is , ewww imho, but it can be usable
but still, i prefer Unity

whats up @Serg?

@IanC I had a mini computer once, had it recompile the kernel - it had to take a few days to complete ;)

@Mateo damn, and I complaining about 4 hours compilation haha
I'm just fearing it might not work like last time
talking of the devil, compilation just ended :O

2:42 AM
so, depending on the computer, just go to sleep with it on and plugged in
:)

I'll leave the modules compilation for tomorrow, thats another 4 hours haha

@IanC not much, very tired
i didn't sleep last night and had exam today

it was a VIA cpu 1ghz with 1gig ram, so that gives you an idea

@Mateo oh yeah? What'd they say?!
also, have I ever mentioned how much I HATE Windows?

survey for available times...

2:44 AM
@Mateo sweet

so, either I can't do it - or need to take a day off / swap days off

@Mateo I guess compiling a kernel is the only task that requires a bit effort on my CPU, havent played a single game in a while
@Serg exams week? that's something I don't miss much on college

well I'm rebooting for the 5th time.. brb

the time coverts where it would be 3 - 10:30 in the morning for the range on slots, so I get up around 4 for work, then get off after 2pm

@IanC not really exams week, just our professor rushes into exams too fast IMHO.

2:48 AM
Ill tell you tomorrow if they let me swap days @Seth

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice about your icon grid question. look up some of JacobVlijms scripts, he has one or two for organizing desktop icons
i could write one too, but I probably won't due to time constraints

3:06 AM
ok, I take out what I said that compilation was over.. :/
"Building modules, stage 2"
fuuu
I didn't even type make modules, something is weird

how can that have -6 votes and only 4 views?

3:33 AM
Experiment is underway...

wb @Nathan awesome man

:)
I've got a 16-bit TIFF of a 6-image stack of shots of the night sky.

I guess I need Gimp 2.9 to work with the file.
2.8 is limited to 8-bit images.

well post it once you get it working :D

3:37 AM
I'll do that.

@NathanOsman didnt even know 2.9 existed. Did it fix the annoying problem where I cant use it after I add text without exporting then opening export?

I have no idea.
We'll find out how it works shortly... :D

like every time I crop on any gimp 2.8 install it wont let me work or copy the stuff then without exporting then opening export. It's really crazy

I've never heard of that.

@NathanOsman do you know a way to make that not happen when adding text?
@NathanOsman you never experienced it?????? it happens for me both on gimp 4 win and gimp 4 linux
@NathanOsman how often do you use the "add text" feature?

3:40 AM
All the time.
Never seen anything like that.

wierd...
@NathanOsman

Q: windows logo key optomization xubuntu

James TobinHow do I make the XFCE whisker menu launch with the Windows logo key in xubuntu like other operating systems?

Unpacking Gimp...

oooo that's new!!!!!

Interesting...

@NathanOsman looks like u and I are both using xubuntu

3:45 AM
That's my VM.

That's an interesting theme... :P

Saving image...
And there you go.
I have no idea what it is. I think the glow is from light leaking into the exposure.

wow neat :D
your camera catches a lot there
how many mp?

3:50 AM
18, IIRC.

-_-

That's a downscaled version of the original.

I use 21 :D
just got one with 24 mp
bad zoom on that one though
I need to get mini card for it

I avoid zoom lenses.
Too much aberration.

well I am going to go have a snack :)

3:52 AM
finally got everything in Windows working.
have I mentioned how much I hate windows?

Welcome to the club.
Ooh. New Sublime build.

Ooh. Speaking. I have a little money now. I should consider buying a license.

4:08 AM
@NathanOsman back :)

why the hell is No Man's Sky still $60

that game is ded
10 dollars is a more accurate price point

basically...

we tried to implement new features and leave out the stuff we didn't like in elite... but uh. we suck at this, so buy our game -- NMS team ;P
FD i was on a rager earlier about the ED team intentionally stalling people.

hell, it's still $50 on G2A for God's sake

4:20 AM
you'ld have to pay me to play it.

Personally, I think NMS would be fun for $10 or so... And of course, just staying in one or two star systems
i'd like some building mods, but i don't think that can happen

button mash star explorer? sure. i'm for a new star fox
dark side planetary approach hold 1

so.. evil idea.
1. Buy a lot of Circles
2. Flash with adware and spyware infested firmware
3. Sell for $49
4. Tarnish Disney's name

and i made the landing despite some... mishaps
yes, we should totally sell nms as star fox 2

@NathanOsman pinged you in your room

4:32 AM
yay owls squaking in our trees.
@RobotHumans that would tarnish star fox's name

i could not agree more

i wonder how moddable NMS actually is.
If it can be messed with, there's a decent change that the really bad things can be fixed

why would i want to write mods for something broken?

because people do it for bethesda

nice answer, but not the point

4:38 AM
because potential?
it does have some, at least.

probably the best mod i saw for morrowind et al was running it on cryengine

that actually exists?
i know there's a project to port Morrowind to the Skyrim engine...

hold 1
sorry it was oblivion youtube.com/watch?v=YwmAIfL_yoo

i want a 1080 so bad... see how nice i can make skyrim look
i know there are extreme-HD overhauls with impressive ENBs and whatnot.

the massive high res doesn't impress me really. i like gameplay more than resolution

4:44 AM
yeah but if you have both...

yeah, i can appreciate the cryengine "my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" moment

i mean, you have skyrim gameplay and hyper-graphics... that's an amazing combination

yeah, but then you have to have 2k to play it

well if you have that much money and resources, you should use it

fair i guess

4:47 AM
but the proper stuff, at least CPU and graphics, are probably actually relatively cheap...
at least now, provided the game is 2011.

keyword there is relative

eh.
you can probably get a 980Ti for $500 plus a decent processor for $400?

and some people make $10/day so relative

fair.

that's not saying i don't want a saitek x52 and a flightmaster offhand to play ED, but it's not something a game should require

4:57 AM
@RobotHumans woah.

so you see the parallel

that thing looks nice

a hotas X and a flightmaster would suffice for my purposes, but the point remains. gear to play

well if you can splurge on the really good gear...

then it's pay to win, and not worth playing

5:00 AM
eh. mechanical keyboards aren't pay2win over regular keyboards
unless we restrict all online players to the FPS of the lowest player, with the bandwidth of the lowest player, banning anyone with better equipment than the lowest player.

i just think there's a diff between bandwidth and requiring a 6 months of income video card or six months of income flight rig.
bandwidth is one thing. you dual purpose that in to movies or whatever. a massive video card or a flight rig are relatively single purpose

eh, i have use of a massive video card...
lots of compute tasks

i used that as an excuse once. that card is sitting in my dad's basement hostage of growing up

well provided i'm renting a compute instance with a gpu right now...

along with suits and a firearm, but basically anything of value was a hostage. so, i don't do that. it's not even a consideration

5:07 AM
fair enough...
still, i should buy a local high-power gpu. compute servers are expensive lol

i'ld rather have an rpi compute farm.
objective opinion instead of using games as an excuse for hardware. the petaflops per dollar are about the same, and it is honestly a better idea

actually that would be an interesting benchmark...
try cracking on a GPU and a pi cluster

petaflops per dollar are the same. you lose on the pi b/c the opencl layer thing isn't there and you have to write it all by hand
when they reach feature parity, the pi will shut down video cards
not to mention, it's multipurpose

true
like graphics cards :D

>.> not really, but i take your point.

5:16 AM
well when you're renting compute server time for graphics-card based applications....

in that case, it's a lot more fair. we were talking games as a multipurpose excuse though

yeah, well... eh.
one purpose is gaming, the second is replacing compute server work

never again for me, but you're welcome to use that logic

yeah, pis are more purposeful but meh

I'm tempted to (for my next desktop build) get a server and stick two Titans in there.
Two Xeon CPUs... 32 GB of RAM each...
That ought to be enough.

5:22 AM
if i won the lottery maybe, but i don't see spending money on it

Comes back to reality.
3

where do you even find multi-cpu motherboards?

supermicro has used ones all over teh place

i've only seen them for servers, but that doesn't fare well for gaming usually

5:22 AM
AFK.

well let's go get $3500 worth of Pis and build a supercomputer cluster

@RobotHumans no one cares about lucifer songs

@KazWolfe i'm working on it

5:39 AM
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: Protein-loaded nourishment are dependably by ryanlpreez on askubuntu.com

@KazWolfe What's the point?
The GPU can't be used for compute and the CPU is still woefully underpowered compared to even an Atom.

@NathanOsman what's your favorite DE?

I'm good with Unity right now.
If I wasn't using Unity, I'd be using KDE.

KDE :o

For underpowered machines, Enlightenment is nice.

5:46 AM
lxqt ftw

@NathanOsman I had kde on both fedora and kubuntu.. for some reason it always krashes :(

@RobotHumans I finally tried it on Arch the other day.

and...

It seemed to work well. Stable.

i was looking for fast slick or tight

5:49 AM
I would fire it up again but I broke my Arch install.
Tried to get the amdgpu driver running and bricked X11.
:(

if we're being honest, that's not really hard to do - brick an arch install
3

Well said.

6:06 AM
@NathanOsman is it possible to have a username on stackexchange with a dot?
or a display name

I assume so.

@NathanOsman update me :)

Can't. I'm mobile ATM.

yes. or it was.

gah
@NathanOsman will it work to leave and rejoin?
test
gah
@JourneymanGeek

6:18 AM
Whaaaaat?
(on Mobile....

@JourneymanGeek can you update my info?

not now, no.

:(
wallows in self-pity

6:32 AM
30 minute break from the grind in ED. Servers down for a bit. hopefully the "joy" spawn when i arrive doesn't occur on server reboot, or i'll have to run faster than tweety bird. i'ld rather be marvin the martian

nvm it is working now

I'm back.
But it seems like you figured it out now.

6:50 AM
it did it on its own
:D
@NathanOsman u on PC now? could use another update

Updated.
Ah, new gravatar. Nice.

back. Thanks, but I will need to fix that avatar. doesnt go well with transparent background :(

morning
Is there any way to find a question in review queue?
