UTT is probably easier than GSettings

probably part was interesting ^

well i've used it twice in my life,

@Arronical I'll have to upvote his answer later... I still think your question is good :) upvoted it before I ran out

Sorry about that.

!! about what?

4:09 PM
Emptying all your votes.

I have still 2-3 CV and 1 up/down vote

Yes well, I will forgive you this time, since it's you

I think I might run into a case of deficit soon enough.

Deficit of what?

I am using up all the goodwill I earned from you. :P

4:13 PM
Haha I believe it's an infinite resource actually

That's encouraging to here :P

I am learning ssh (just started), and I am seeing this :
[severus@Tux ~]$ sudo systemctl start sshd.service
[severus@Tux ~]$ sudo systemctl status sshd.service
● sshd.service - OpenSSH Daemon

Is this normal ?

@SeverusTux Do you have port 22 port-forwarded to your machine through your router? That's probably the issue.

@SeverusTux Maybe a firewall issue?

@SeverusTux I have no idea but as a side note systemctl always assumes .service in the absence of a suffix so you may save your keystrokes...

4:23 PM
No, could you please tell me how to do that ? any link
No port forwarding

@jokerdino feel free to test :P

That's a little ominous.

Oops

@SeverusTux Are you accessing it on a local network?

Holy Crap! Am I being Cheated ?

I stay in hostel, We got 7 different connections for our hostel (all different data plans and speeds) . But Now When I check "My Ip" on different machines, all show the same.

4:27 PM
@SeverusTux That's probably normal. They all go through the same actual modem and that has a single IP. What you're seeing are different internal networks, probably.
You'll have different internal IPs but the same external one.

I must bid you all adieu

Each connection should have been provided with unique IP right ?
Now, If my friend ssh into this IP,and port 22, where will it go ?

@Arronical ?! O_o

@jokerdino It's a fancy way of saying goodbye

@SeverusTux Nowhere. Not unless you've told the router to redirect port 22 to you.
@Arronical I think he meant it sounded kinda like "Adieu cruel world".

4:30 PM
I haven't done anything like that @terdon , Which router ? my personal router ?

Whatever router your machine is using, yes. If you're in a hostel and don't control the router, forget it.

@terdon Aah! I can see that being worrying, I'm not that beaten down by AU questions yet!

@terdon no, Its private . We bought it

@SeverusTux You should try IPv6, that one should be unique.
I think.
Or I am mixing up DSLite with what you have there.

hmm.. got a Sportsmanship badge!

4:33 PM
This is the set up : there are 7 diff routers (one is mine) and all connected to one Switch,which is connected to one modem (optical) and a wire from that modem is going somewhere.. idk.

wow. responsible admins.

So, my question is , If all are having same IP (outward) , when some ssh into that IP:22 (my user name) , why will it come to me ? I mean there are 6 more routers .. they might use same usernames.. same ports .. use ssh..

about six to seven months ago, i found a security issue in the learning system that my college uses. It allows me to impersonate any user. And... still not fixed. In fact, it's worse now lol

@Anwar excellent work :) I have about 45 to go...

Congratulations @Jorgen for rep-capping on his first day!
5
If he stays around, we're gonna have a great user.

4:47 PM
@Anwar Yay! That's probably the most important badge you can earn IMO

Probably I'd use my time stopping superpower ( if i had one ) to take naps. I think I'm officially lazy

@Serg so... how can i do this with telekinesis.
probably just bend the fabric of space-time.

@KazWolfe too much energy would be consumed. Summon an entry level demon and outsource work to him/her

Q: Please consider leaving feedback on votes for new users

Mark KirbyI came across this question where two new users had answered and both of them got downvoted. Now I get why not everyone comments on their votes but I really think if you are dealing with rep 1 users who are making an effort, it is counter productive and may lead to these users felling disgruntle...

@Serg But I have level 60 in conjuration. I can do mid-level demons without any severe mana penalties.

user136984
Great, and here comes the EU army...

Make love, not war!

.....

Oh, there were much more pictures in that search result...
;-)

5:10 PM
Smh

@Zanna here's something you might find useful
bak()
{
    mv "$1" "$1".bak
}

unbak()
{
    orig=$(awk '{print substr($0,0,length($0)-4)}' <<< "$1")
    mv "$1" "$orig"
}
What do you think it's for ?

backing up files?

Bingo
Tons of times you need to disable some service by adding .bak extension to a file. So these two functions do exactly that, add bak, and remove bak

@ByteCommander but... war is way more fun.
there's strategy and logic and espionage and so many other things.

War games, yes. Real war, no.

5:15 PM
ugh, fine.

I love playing stuff like World Of Tanks, Command & Conquer or Civilization, but I have no use for real fights...

but you are talking to someone who would be in cyber or comms, so I'd end up safe in a tent or some bunker in Nevada.

What Byte said ^
@jokerdino can you please ping me once a spam message appears ? I wanna test something, so please leave me one two play with before nuking it. 5 mins max

@terdon @Zanna thanks for encouraging. I'm 35th with this badge. :)

Sure but I can't predict when the next one will come and if I would be around at that time.

5:20 PM
I'm just asking in case one shows up

yeah no problem

@Serg but there are other mods!

@Anwar I see only jokerdino in char right now

oh

@Serg The best time to flag spam is in the early UTC morning hours, in around 10-12h.

5:25 PM
No thanks.

@KazWolfe What's your problem?

On a tablet. Don't feel like handwriting that.
Or typing it

It looks like a German street sign.
"Hallimasch" is a kind of mushroom IIRC. And "Weg" means "way".

Typing on a Windows tablet with a pen. This is why I don't like that captcha.

I don't see the problem...

5:30 PM
I'm a fat lazy American.
I don't want to write that out!

Has somebody here played with GPFS?

Well, unlike some big US cities, in Germany we don't simply number our streets. We give each of them a separate name, made with creativity and love.

But aren't numbers more efficient?

I'd say it's easier to distinguish and remember e.g. "Mozartstraße" and "Beethovenweg" than "45th street" and "54th street".

@Serg normally I think I'd cp $1 $1.bak ?

5:34 PM
Gah! I ran out of my 17 daily delete votes.
@Zanna don't forget quoting the variables and adding "--" after cp!

user136984
Yikes! That's some landlord:

user136984

Q: Landlord will be watching my data traffic, as mentioned in the lease agreement

Olba12I am moving to Germany, and in the contract I signed I had to accept that all my data traffic can/will be checked by the apartment owner. The contract states: Flatrate, aber hinter 30GB Tarif priorisiert, aslo etwas langsamer Ja ich weiss, daß meine Daten überprüft werden. Which trans...

cp -- "$1" "$1.bak"

@ByteCommander I'm on mobile, I just couldn't be bothered to type four ", but thanks for the -- no options reminder

5:38 PM

@ParanoidPanda Nothing special compared to US providers

I have learned to "$always quote my variables" and 'always quote my regex'

He does not seem to be watching where things go, just how much is going

@Anwar shouldn't it be added to /etc/rc.local to run as root on startup?

@Anwar I think so.

5:42 PM
@Serg in case spam on a different site than Ask Ubuntu is also ok: hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/a/25159/16729

@Zanna if it's something like a script in /etc/rc4.d/ or a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart/ , cp won't disable them. The whole point here is to temporarily backup a file into something else, while at the same time fooling whatever process is looking for that file

But @ByteCommander is more surely right

@ByteCommander I need AU spam specifically

I completely have no idea what to do with my ubuntu

@ByteCommander may be. that could be an answer I think
@Sandro sounds great!

5:44 PM

user136984
Is that a Hamster? :D

@Serg Does your window moving magic also work on KDE? askubuntu.com/q/824935/367990

@Serg oh! I see, sorry I'm with student, only 25% my brain in the room. Thanks a lot! ^_^ <3

5:46 PM
I get this screen

it's telling you what to do
hit ENTER for diag, and see why systemctl is complaining
so... because i'm annoying and have rep to waste.

IWhen I hit the enter I get root@computer-inspiron-N5010:~#

I will give out one +50 bounty to any on-site question that is unanswered and is of good quality.

user136984
@Sandro: That's what you're meant to get.

user136984
So you should then do what it says.

5:49 PM
If you'd like to nominate your question... post a link please!

@KazWolfe wait a sec.

@ParanoidPanda I'm completely new to ubuntu

@Serg You really have fallen in love with awk haven't you :) All you need is orig=${f%%.bak}.

And this is my first expirence

user136984
@Sandro: And that is not my problem, please ask on the main site.

5:51 PM
Tell me what to google

@Sandro press ctrl-D as suggested
and after maintenance is completed, reboot

user136984
If that doesn't work then you should enter the commands it recommends in ""s to see what is wrong.

user136984
But please do ask this on the main site: askubuntu.com/questions/ask

What happened I get my login screen

user136984
Ok, well then you should just log in.

5:53 PM
I get this problem 2 Hours ago
I know

user136984
Ok, well I would advise running the commands which it suggested on that screen anyway as you may still have some sort of system problem.

Hi everybody ! :)

Hi 1

@Rinzwind Hi you ! :)

user136984
@Sandro: If you login, press CTRL + ALT + T, and then press enter after typing: systemctl -xb. What is the output you get?

Al KapI have a new Dell laptop Precision something, and worked with a mouse. But my touch-pad made a lot of trouble with cursor jumping all over screen, and I managed to switch it off. user136984
5:58 PM
@Sandro: Oh, sorry, I meant: journalctl -xb

@ParanoidPanda As I can see on the screenshots this machine does not boot to the login screen ... right @Sandro ? Good evening ! :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: He says it does now.

@cl-netbox now i loged in

i like how our elementary OS friends migrated a crosspost to us

6:00 PM
@Sandro Is this a clean new installation of 16.04 ?

yes i downloaded from main site nearly two month ago

@cl-netbox does it have problem

@edwinksl put the last VTC of the day.

@Sandro There can can be many reasons ... this should not happen ... I suggest to wipe the ubuntu partition and reinstall a fresh system ... the easiest, shortest and best way to solve this ! :)

6:03 PM
how stable is elementary now?

user136984
Oh dear, I am not having a good day. Today has been so exhausting...

sorry to hear that @ParanoidPanda

dupe askubuntu.com/q/824803/61218 and I can't vote

user136984
And a pack of chilli coated olives exploded in my face last night...

6:03 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice what?

@ParanoidPanda What happened ? not enough chocolate and cake ? :D

its meh stable @Anwar

@Anwar thanks ;p

oh!

what about my open jdk

6:04 PM
@Anwar done

i there a ways to backup

@Sandro What is with it ?

installed software

@edwinksl thanks :)

@edwinksl that was fast XD

6:05 PM
Hi all :D

@Sandro it should be there.

there is no other ways

@SeverusTux Ello!

>!just_checking_if_this_works
oh. no

user136984
@Sandro: Back up your data and any config files you want to and the rest you will have to reinstall.

6:06 PM
@SeverusTux Hi ! :)

ello ;)

@Sandro Any way you could put /home on a separate drive?

Hi there, if I have a question that has been asked a lot (making GPU work on Linux using xrandr; resolution is lower than monitor), but still is quite setup specific. Should I open a new question ?

you know i have windows 10 on my system

6:06 PM
Or toss it in this (or unix's) chatroom

can it be the problem

@Sandro no

i installed ubuntu alongside windows 10

@titus.andronicus ask it on Linux & Unix if it isnt strictly Ubuntu

user136984
Oh dear, I am so hungry, I must get some rest soon and have something to eat (maybe not exactly in that order though).

6:07 PM
@Sandro please copy the data you wanna keep to another disk or partition ... then reinstall ubuntu

@titus.andronicus the Unix & Linux chatroom is not very active (OK, it's just about completely inactive). If the question is about Ubuntu, you can ask here, if you're on any other distribution, ask on Unix & Linux (the site, unlike the chat room is active).

O! I passed 1300 XD

ok @cl-netbox
thanks

In either case, make sure to mention the other questions you've read and explain why they don't help. If you don't it will likely be closed as a duplicate of one of them @titus.andronicus.

@Sandro You're welcome ! Good luck ! :)

6:08 PM
@terdon thanks. I am running Kubuntu, which I guess qualifies? Thanks for the advice

user136984
@Sandro: You should make sure of the data integrity of the ISO you downloaded. To make sure that this isn't being caused by corruption.

Yep. Kubuntu is welcome both here and on U&L.
For resolution issues, your best bet is asking on Ask Ubuntu so go ahead and post your question.

@terdon Cool ;)

How does @Community reject an edit ...

user136984
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice: I believe it is when someone else edits the question at the same time as you.

user136984
When you both submit the edits at the same time and it has to choose which one to have.

user136984
It should probably tell you.

Ya
Aight peeps I g2g! I'll be on later!

@Zanna ubuntu event in london insights.ubuntu.com/event/…

6:17 PM
@edwinksl damn, missing it right now
Should I gatecrash?

hehe yes :P

6:34 PM
Saw it :)
I think yes

I read the entire comment chain and I don't want to link it anymore.

good afternoon!
just had a really productive day off, solved some issues I was postponing for the last few months haha
how are you all doing?

@IanC Good afternoon ! :)

@IanC very nice

@IanC Everything okay ... what about you ? :)
Hey @jokerdino ! Nice to see you ! :)

6:47 PM
hiya

@jokerdino askubuntu.com/questions/824892/… axe buying courier and viper buying wards? only silly bots do that :D

all good too! Think I'll work a bit on an indicator I started yesterday :) @cl-netbox

Good evening @Zanna ! :)

@edwinksl lol it also happens in sub 1k trench warfare

@IanC Ah ... something like the one from @Serg ? :)

6:48 PM
I just got tired of having to type sensors everytime I wanted to check on CPU temperature, so I'll make a indicator to show it on the panel
will be a really simple one, using the output from sensors

@jokerdino as they say, the trench is everywhere

@IanC doesn't there already exist one ? I think the package is called psensor ... :)

@edwinksl I can't wait to go back to some 'bobo anjing'

I think it does @cl-netbox, but since I'm already half way done with the code.. haha
will be good to practice anyways

@jokerdino lmao. what about the classic put tank in a mall? that gets me every time xD

6:51 PM
@IanC yes this of course is a point ! :)

@edwinksl "need 1 tenk, 1 stunnar, 2 support. I will play hitter"

@jokerdino that is so triggering

"putang ina mo bobo"

xD

7:04 PM
@terdon yes, i am awk fan-boy and not afraid to show it off :p But yeah, that could be done easier

Hello @Serg ! :)

@cl-netbox hi there

@Serg, have you ever used more than one indicator in the same application?

Hi @cl-netbox @IanC

7:16 PM
@Zanna :)

Glib is throwing me some warnings and critical messages and I can find no reason for them except that I'm using 3 appindicators in the same app. They are showing like nothing was wrong, working, but I want to clear those warnings
hey @Zanna, how are you doing? :)

user136984
VTC this Minty question as off-topic.

@IanC I'm well but it's one of those days when I feel like I can't get anything right, you know?
@Serg @terdon always has the tidiest way...

@edwinksl answered
because I need a guinea pig to test the xorg downgrade on 16.04 :p

@IanC awesome, that always feels really good :)

7:20 PM
know what you mean, what happened though? @Zanna

@IanC oh too many little things. Life is like that :)

@Zacharee1 knew it ;p

don't worry about that, everyone have those days when you can only see what's going wrong, at least I've them once in a while :p

One thing went really well, I arrived to see my youngest student in the middle of being yelled at by her dad for forgetting to bring her revision work home, but by the time I left everything was fixed and everyone happy (I didn't do anything really, but still feel good)

@IanC not really, simply because there's no real need for it

7:25 PM
are you a teacher? @Zanna
@Serg I needed more than one indicator because I wanted to show an icon and label for each CPU Core, don't think I can do that with only one indicator

Yeah one-to-one teacher

unless there's a way to use a gtk_container in the place of the icon in the panel
what do you teach? @Zanna

Kind of everything really... science, maths, English... how to survive school... feminism & decolonisation???

@IanC label ? you can , via joining two strings. Icon ? no. I personally would use menu entries per each cpu

@Zanna That's nice! I've tried teaching once, but some people are born for that, some people like me are not hahaha
think I'm a little bad at explaining things maybe
@Serg It's because the icon would be the indicator itself, it would change color depending on the CPU temperature, so I'd not have to click to check it

7:33 PM
@Zanna sounds like you are teaching GCSE kids

I think the app_indicator_new being called more than once is calling some routine that shouldn't be called twice though
and those warnings are showing up

huh, profile page in github has changed

I made a good thorough edit, but 'it changed too much'

@IanC It was a lot of training... I think you just need willingness to be patient above all
@edwinksl yeah mostly, but my youngest is 7 and oldest 51...

@Zanna woah 51. i definitely i hope i would still be willing to learn things at 51

7:37 PM
o.O

I think willingness to learn is what keeps people alive :)

user136984
I just saw this picture!

user136984
It's so sweet! :D

user136984
7:40 PM
@jokerdino: Tofurkey I think you mean. :P

Looks like tomato sauce :)

user136984
I think it probably is.

Fine, I will try it later.

heh :)

8:13 PM
uhh, interesting username askubuntu.com/users/546659/wifestealer

@Serg just posted a question about the issue on StackOverflow (stackoverflow.com/questions/39498940/…)
let's see if someone knows the mistery behind those warnings

I've got a .desktop file running a sh script, using sudo-needing commands, but I don't wanna input password, I set this up before but I don't remember how to do it

not recommended, but you could make the script a suid script

xterm -e sudo sh /home/david/Update_Script.sh
running that from the .desktop

8:22 PM
there might be a better (and safer approach), but you could do:
`sudo chown root:root /home/david/Update_Script.sh`
`chmod u+s /home/david/Update_Script.sh`
and call it as a regular script, it will do EVERYTHING as root though

really not a good idea imho...

I don't think it's a good idea too :p

Why not
uhhh
all my desktop icons just dissapeared...

first, everything will be done as root, meaning any files created, modified, could have their owner modified to root, which could be a headache later.
second, a single script bug could end up being a complete disaster

8:37 PM
also it didnt work

there are other reasons, but overall setting suid root for an application or script is usually not advisable
what is the script supposed to do?

update and upgrade all software

like
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade?

the script doesn't use sudos

how do you know it didn't work?

8:40 PM
because its still asking for my PW

run ls -l on the script folder
and print output here

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Sep 14 16:35 /home/david/Update_Script.sh

it didn't set the suid bit

how do i do that lmao

just to reenforce I don't think it's a good idea, feel like I'm sinning on telling you to do it haha:
`sudo chmod u+s /home/david/Update_Script.sh`

8:45 PM
xterm -e sudo sh /home/david/Update_Script.sh
when I take sudo out of that I dont get the gui

isn't the script just the commands "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade"?

Im running a lot of commands
update, then upgrade, dist-upgrade, autoremove, clean
etc.
It's in the order that it works :P

Someone downvoted :( askubuntu.com/a/824209/274320

those don't have GUI afaik, and you don't need sudo when you have a suid root script

But what's wrong with it?

8:49 PM
@IanC The Xterm GUI doesn't show up I mean.

why would the terminal pop up?

not sure why though, but reading sh man page, apparently you would have to add -p to run a suid root program/script
so it would be xterm -e sh -p /home/david/Update_Script.sh

still doesn't open xterm :/
I'm such an idiot

user136984
I'm eating grapes right now.

@ParanoidPanda Are you feeling better?

8:59 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice he is eating grapes :P so no.
