@Zacharee1 can't - there are laws against recording phonecalls like that

in CA? rly?

hot damn gitlab takes forever to extract lol
still doing it after 30 minutes

@Zacharee1 got my first upvote of the day... not sure why I'm still awake

lol
thx :p
wait, you gave me your first upvote or you got your first?

Gave you

12:10 AM
ah
well thanks!

I ran out of votes again "yesterday"

"I downloaded a file from Google. How do I install it?" askubuntu.com/questions/825051/amdgpu-pro-feral-games-patch
@Zanna :p
@Zanna you're awake because your subconscious wouldn't let you sleep without giving me your first upvote of the day

I haven't got any yet, but just saw Pilot's answer to stupid ls question got 8 votes (I deleted mine)
@Zacharee1 probably :)

heh

With that fixed, maybe I'll manage to sleep now

12:13 AM
which was that again? I thought I saw it earlier today
found it

why... is the find command so confusing

@KazWolfe ikr

all i want to do is get the path of a single file with a very specific name

Hello friends :D
Could anyone help me here : unix.stackexchange.com/q/309964/155386 ?pleease..

@Zanna why are you still here!

12:22 AM
Yeah, leave already!
:p
lol
> Updates are available, but we temporarily need 1.03 GB-1.03 GB of space to download. Remove some things you don't need right now and we'll try again.

@Zacharee1 windoze?

yeth
I mean, I can do the low requirement, but the upper one?

maaan, my indicator is almost ready :D

ye, real tough upper limit

just need the routine to extract the temperature from sensors and it's basically done

12:25 AM
@KazWolfe i thought this was you for a sec unix.stackexchange.com/users/16369/kaz

@edwinksl No wolf, FAKE

The shutdown delay really pisses me off. Thanks systemd, i hate you

Wow. Two captcha requests on Google less than a minute apart.

Q: How can one determine who has the highest score for a specific tag?

Elder GeekThis question was prompted by this one and I was wondering who if anyone has the required score in the tag to request the synonym. I checked the tags of some likely suspects but came up empty. I'm wondering if there's a specific moderator tool that would answer this question.

@Serg At least it's better than 15.10 where shutdown would sometimes take 3-4 minutes.
Three now!
Google, I'm human, I promise!

@NathanOsman sure you are
AHH! The robomod!

@NathanOsman you are definitely a bot

when is the next version of Ubuntu due out?

October 23rd or 13th I think
13th

@Zacharee1 does it have any new features?

I don't think there's anything amazing
Mir and Unity 8 have been held back again

That's a good thing I think.

1:05 AM
Oh yeah, it's not finished at all
just disappointing that we still have the same thing we did in 2010 :p

2010 isn't all that bad is it?

Well I like Google's Material design or Apple's old Skeumorphism

Unity always seemed kind of like a half-effort at design. It's got a bit of shine, but it's still pretty dull, and the icons aren't very smooth
@Seth well it's valid
unless you're a Python dev of course

@seth that's only for compiled language devs, right ? what excuse do python or javascript devs have ?

1:12 AM
@Serg JS: "I gave up because it doesn't work"

kek

@Serg that depends. Using node? Same excuse :P

@Serg The cdll/ctypes wrapper isn't working right. I need to recompile the wrapper code

@RobotHumans Oooh, nice one

"I smashed my computer out of frustration. A new one is on the way, but it won't be here until tomorrow."

1:15 AM
@Serg We're looking to boost the speed of some things using Cython. The pure python bits are passing unit tests, but that's slow. And we're fighting the python to native layer again.

It's a Canonical product. Do we have to? whines

@Seth but it's for fun

also that was message 32323273

hehehehheh
oooh :32323273

1:18 AM
@KazWolfe ah. well in that case.
carry on.

lol

speaking of bounties, i have to set one on a Q but it's not available yet

@Seth lol, the Hymn for the Weekend original song is a literal audio version of the video. It starts with the birds chirping and everything
No wonder the Seeb Remix is more popular
@Serg which Q?
Although I think I like having less weird/random synth in the song

why are all four of my cores at 100%
stupid tar

nice
and how fast are these cores?
uh oh
the pencil

1:22 AM
hello from seoul, korea!

dun dun dun ;p

DIS IS KOREA

@Serg something you can't script?!

DUN DUN DUN DUN

1:23 AM
@Edity you're korean?

/facepalm
If I translated Nitroshare to korean,

@Zacharee1 yup, something i also would like to know if it's possible or not

wouldn't it be obvious?

@Edity well @Serg knows Chinese, but he's Ukrainian. I translated NitroShare to Spanish, but I'm from the USA

ll
k
It's really hot here
20-30 oC

1:25 AM
that's not hot

I DON'T KNOW
I DIDN'T SLEEP FOR A WHOLE DAY

it's more like 36 here

I'M STUPID WITHOUT SLEEP

without? >:P

@Edity are you sure it is the effect of not sleeping?

1:26 AM
classrooms were up to probably 40 last week

@TheXed yes

@TheXed that's the phrase I wanted
@Edity whoosh?

Cool, my indicator seems to be working

@IanC wat do

@Zacharee1 heard the woosh from california.

1:26 AM
@KazWolfe FWOOOOOOOOSHHHH

just need to heat the CPU a bit to test if the colors are changing

over the sound of my fans blowing at 120%

@KazWolfe lol

@Zacharee1 heard the woosh from the airplane.

wat

1:27 AM
@Zacharee1 just an indicator to show some colored icons on the panel to show the CPU cores temperatures

@IanC ooh cool

@Edity that joke doesn't work for you lol

:P

I hope someone doesn't flag any of these messages, because then we'll all get banned

I hope I don't get heatstroke or zika virus or internet loss
ITS HOT HERE

1:28 AM
OH GOD FORBID YOU LOST INTERNET
Zika and heatstroke, pfff
but NO INTERNET??!!
the condition of No Internet has a 0% survival rate

I'm still top 4% this week

INDICATOR INSIDE
Serg's Fine Custom-made Desktops with Pre-Installed indicators
MAKE THAT A BUISNESS ^

it is supposed to get yellow, orange or red
depending on the temperature
it makes some step calculations between 50 degrees and the high temperature, and use this to define the range for each color

@Zacharee1 But one can survive the No Internet, is to, fix the damn modem.

1:33 AM
can I post a source code like this on "Code Review"?
I'd like some constructive criticism on it

So I updated my computer and now all my icons are different...

@IanC why not? that's what Code Review is for.

I don't know what happened

1:47 AM
@edwinksl can you attach a file on code review? Would be easier to make the source available in a compressed file, since it requires a small config file and some icons

@IanC no, you need to actually post all the code. It needs to be working and you need to explain what it's meant to do. Also (obviously) mention the language it's in.

I'll post the code, but they would need the images and configuration file to run it
It will be a loooong post haha

Well they're not there to test it, since it should already work
you'll get suggestions for improvements to syntax and such

I get it, well, in that case the code of the main file should be enough

yeah

1:53 AM
well it is not good if your post is too long
nobody is going to read it

maybe my code is too big for a Code Review post then :/

@edwinksl except on CR

387 lines on the main file

My Arduino thing was huge

57 on the header

1:57 AM
took a while for an answer, but it came

is my code too big for it?

@Zacharee1 huge portions of your code are just dw and case
it is long but not super difficult to read

@edwinksl yeah, but they still had to suffer through it :p

wtf dpkg
it's just sleeping on "extracting"

@IanC in any case, no harm trying except your question risks getting downvoted and/or closed

2:00 AM
nothing seems to be happening in htop anymore

@edwinksl I just realized I didn't implement the logging feature, as soon as I finish it I'll post it there, probably some extra 10-20 lines of code

lol @KazWolfe
What do you guys think of me posting a feature request for a dark theme option on MetaAU?

@Zacharee1 eh, neutral

I'm gonna make a post
I made a preliminary dark theme

this just in. WSL sucks

2:10 AM
posted
@KazWolfe "just"

what WSL are you talking about? @KazWolfe

Q: Dark Theme for Ask Ubuntu

Zacharee1I've been using a color inverter extension in Chrome to make websites with prominently white colors be primarily shades of dark gray or black. It's a lot easier on my eyes and, even though it's technically a "night mode" plugin, I use it all the time because it really helps with visual fatigue. ...

@Zacharee1 yup

guess what

you got preview privs. on the new dev domain?

2:23 AM
no, but that would be cool too
pictures coming
found out what was wrong with the omg ubuntu scope!

cool!

it doesn't search, but it lists the rss feed out at least
I think that is all the other one did as well

2:38 AM
unpacking for three hours now
do i blame WSL, Ubuntu, or UEFI?

lets blame uefi, I had lots of trouble with that recently ;P

@Serg take a look if you want too! Would like to hear some opinions, even if about some small part of the code

UEFI sucks...

@IanC any reasons why you are writing an indicator in c instead of python? :p

just because I don't know Python! haha
but it does looks a bit easier to do them on Python

2:47 AM
Dude...if you know C, then you have to know Python.
its so similar, yet so much easier..

Q: PBIS (Likewise Open not updating user in trusted domain immediately

Tien Dung Tranwe have 2 active directory: abc.local and def.local, we already config trusted domain both of them. My problem is that if I create a new users in domain def.local, I cannot use this user to login computers in domain abc.local, I should wait around 15mins, then re-login, it's ok. Be the same if I ...

@TheXed I might try to learn it, I feel like I'm the only linux user that don't know python lol
I did read a bit about Ruby lately

@IanC I don't know it...but I know enough of that I know how similar it is to C++, which I know is similar to C

python is a super useful thing to know in the unix world :)
@TheXed it's.. not really similar to C++?
Unless you are comparing it to something like haskell I guess..

@Seth sure it is...

2:55 AM
just had to correct a small bug on the code I posted

Q: How to use sudo with the -i option?

Garynall96I am following some tutorial to install Ubuntu with full disk encryption. In it, I am asked to boot the installation media into the live session and perform some operations before installing the distro on my laptop. Some of these operations require a root terminal; alternatively the guide tells m...

I just finished installing my patched kernel on VM
Kernel Panic!

@IanC error code?

I can't read the whole log, but the end says [ end Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

@Zacharee1 would this do what you have in mind? chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dark-reader/…

3:23 AM
well, time to accept the 4 hour kernel compilation didn't work
I can't boot even in recovery mode
only with the other kernels
well, gonna get ready to sleep
good night!!

ah
@IanC your kernel is confused where the root dict is
where it needs to boot

3:45 AM
this is pretty cool quora.com/…

damnit this is annoying
it should not take four hours to install a package

gitlab?

yep.
which makes no sense
DPKG has been sleeping for almost all of that time.
It extracted everything, and now DPKG is just taking a really nice long nap

Q: how to install and run oVirt on ubuntu 14.04 server

Pajsijeis there any good explanation about how to install and run oVirt on Ubuntu 14.04 server? I know for this link https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/guest-agent/install-the-guest-agent-in-ubuntu/ but I still can't run oVirt on my Ubuntu. https : // domain.example.com/webadmin https: // d...

@Mateo thanks! That's cool.

4:20 AM
Does anyone remember where the page is on Google that tells you what it has learned about you from searches?

4:39 AM
so... i just broke wsl by linking initctl to true.
because screw you wsl, don't break things.
@Serg

4:55 AM
yay i wasted 300 mb downloading the wrong file.
and three hours waiting for the wrong version of gitlab to install. fml

huh? what did you download?

the 16.04 version
WSL uses 14.04

Q: Can't install Gitlab on WSL: Initctl errors

Kaz WolfeRecently, I've tried to install Gitlab Enterprise Edition on my WSL system as I lack a proper development environment at the moment. The install itself goes reasonably well, but I cannot configure Gitlab, as it returns this error: * service[create a temporary mailroom service] action nothing ...

which explains this.

oops.

i realized the second i wrote the question, and checked lsb_release
i'll keep the question open as a monument to my stupidity and I will answer it.

rare mistake by kaz le wolfe

4:56 AM
why the hell is WSL 14?!

i did know wsl was trusty
but i didn't think you would fall for that trap :p

so brb wasting my entire evening on this stupid thing
and i swear to god. Something with DPKG and syncing the filesystem on WSL is screwed up beyond belief.
i wonder... Is there a way to "diff" installed packages?
Like, find the differences in the new file, and just install those?

5:13 AM
also god damn we need to decide this debate
The GitHub project calls it Bash on Windows. MS calls it WSL. "Ubuntu on Windows" is yet another MS name.

well, i don't see a consensus yet github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/1013

see, if WSL were to actually work the way it was supposed to, I'd be so happy with it.

feel free to chip in

I can use all my Linux tools and abilities on Windows, and keep all my software natively.
But, as I managed to figure out, WSL is an idiot.
(well, I am too, but still. WSL has problems to say the least)
like, a really crappy terminal emulator

this guy's system is a mess :/ askubuntu.com/questions/825103/…

brb waiting four hours for gitlab proper to install

heh
keep us in the loop

5:41 AM
GitLab?

yep
it installed in less than four hours yay!
but configs are broken, so we gotta purge and start again

Hey - I installed it on my server a loooong time ago. Before there was a DEB or Docker image.

Another python killer...

I had to run a bunch of Ruby commands by hand and create user accounts and cron jobs, etc...
:D

oh. back when EE was actually free?

5:43 AM
@Zanna go save 'em snakies

will post back in another 45m
all this just so i can test things

gg no re

Setting up!
YAY

morning!
@KazWolfe which component was trying to use upstart?

nope, @edwinksl, same error. it's initctl, not my version of the package
@Anwar you commented on the post lol

5:56 AM
yeah. I was on mobile and didn't want to come on chat

@KazWolfe ._.

so it's not me being an idiot! yay

Your solution will be "eat those errors" and try to use it as much as possible

i can't eat those errors
because it doesn't even start because of said errors

WSL doesn't still work with upstart thing
Can you manually start the service after boot?

5:58 AM
damnit
well, no. the way gitlab works is it needs to configure and bootstrap everything before anything can happen.
This is the part that's giving me this error.
