i downloaded jdk from a website it was a tar file and when i opened it doesn't has any .run file, then i asked here yesterdays and somebody tell me to extract it in opt, now i extract in opt what should i have to do right now
now does it install

`top` total: ~1%
@Serg method ~6%
@terdon method ~25%

@Sandro Woah, what website? Why aren't you installing from the repositories?

@terdon because oracle bans our country

@Sandro From the repositories

11:01 AM
yes

So you don't have jdk in the repositories? You can't apt-get it?

i get 403 error in repository

@Sandro is there a good reason why you want Oracle Java ?

why are you using oracle jdk not openjdk?

^ what zanna said

11:02 AM
because i want to run android studio and also php storm

@Sandro for that try switching to main mirror?
oracle jdk isn't in repositories but there is a PPA for it

i installed ubuntu yesterday
completely new
i download tar file
and when i extract it it has bin,db,include,jre,lib,man folder
and two zip file like javafx-src.zip and src.zip

afaik when you extract it the job is done with oracle jdk... where are your instructions?

@Zanna do u means that jdk now installed on my pc

yeah, as far as I remember from other questions

11:06 AM
I use a script to install oracle jdk.
i can give it to you. can be improved

you don't have to build anything from the tarball I thought...

how can i install oracle jdk
completely confused
im windows user

you'll download the tar.gz file and extract in in /usr/lib/jvm
and symlink some files, make your system believe you have a jdk in that location

how about opt

Q: How can I install Sun/Oracle's proprietary Java JDK 6/7/8 or JRE?

BenjaminI want to install Oracle's JRE and to update to the latest version with the Software Updater when they released. Is there a Ubuntu package that is provided by Canonical or Oracle? Before release Java 7, I followed this way to install Java 6. But it doesn't work for Java 7. There is no package s...

one of our highest voted questions ^

11:09 AM
@Sandro the easy answer is: don't use Oracle JDK. There is no reason to unless you are 100% sure that you need the Oracle version and the Openjdk won't do. For 99% of the cases, there is no need for Oracle and you can just sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk

@jokerdino I think that's true when people don't appreciate it, especially if they continually want more and more. In other circumstances it can be rewarding though.

There's instructions for manual installation askubuntu.com/q/56104/295286

@terdon i get this error when i run you command
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

¡Buenas dias!

@Arronical agree

11:10 AM
Also, OpenJDK is possible to use with Android Studio

@Sandro OK. Then run sudo dpkg --configure -a as the error tells you

@ByteCommander Gutten Tag

s/tt/t/

@Arronical My point was that it's exothermic in nature.

I use this script. You need to replace the jdk filename on 6th line. execute it from same directory as the jdk paste.ubuntu.com/23177567 @Sandro . However, as others said, 99% of time you don't need oracle jdk.

11:11 AM
@ByteCommander s/as/os/ for some reason I've never understood, dia is masculine.

Hmm... right.

@terdon it asked my about kerio VPN Server!!

I have no idea what that is.

it says please enter hostname of your kerio vpn server
:D

@ByteCommander buenas tardes!

11:13 AM
5:13 AM . . . somebody smack me . . .

good late?

@Serg still awake or again?

@ByteCommander again . . .and i have class at 8 . . .

At least you found some sleep :)

@jokerdino lates = evening I think

11:15 AM
yeah, i slept whole day yesterday, but not this night
I'll have to take nap again between classes

@Zanna looks like tarde the adjective is late and tarde the noun means afternoon / evening.

in Portuguese tarde is afternoon/evening so same I guess
and I say "mais tarde" for later, but probably I'm mangling it

I haven't learned tarde outside of 'Nosotros somos tardes'.

@Zacharee1 top of the morning to you lad :D

@jokerdino what's that?

11:24 AM
"We are late"
or maybe it means "We are evenings"

we are f . . . un

@jokerdino Yep

Why is Serg Irish now?

is that an idiom?

You can't use late as an adjective like that in Spanish. You'd say he tardado not soy tarde.

11:26 AM
@terdon you'd say estoy tarde

@Zacharee1 because Serg is sleep deprived because of his own stupidity . . .also because i am watching JSE right now

"es bueno pero es tarde"?
I think I learned something like that.

Bueno

@Zacharee1 Um. No you wouldn't. Not unless it's some weird dialect I haven't come across.

Singular/agreement

11:27 AM
The problem isn't estar vs ser, it's tarde itself.

@terdon American maybe

Yo soy bien, pero es muy estupido

You'd say estoy con retraso, for example.

@Zanna No, just some common phrases in español

@Zacharee1 I really, really doubt it.

11:28 AM
yo quierro uno burrito
no taco por favor

@terdon I'll ask my teacher. They seem to let us use it here

@Serg callate por favor :p

@Zacharee1 muy locco ! Arriba !!! YOLO !!!

I am 21% fluent in Spanish as per this website I am using to teach myself some.

11:29 AM
@terdon i tried to install openJdk but i get this error

@jokerdino I should really try to learn

done.
done.
Errors were encountered while processing:
oracle-java7-installer
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

@jokerdino Duolingo?

yeah

also i removed dpkg
i think

11:30 AM
@Sandro what command did you enter?
@Sandro in that case, reinstall ubuntu XD

sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk

but I don't think you did remove dpkg
you have to resolve the issue with oracle-java7-installer first

you are going to get that error whatever you try to do

I'm very surprised swipe knew I was trying to use colloquial

11:32 AM
@Zacharee1 OK, En Perú, perhaps. Don't use it anywhere else though, it just sounds weird.
> No es usual en el mundo hispanohablanteni propia de la lengua formal o culta.
And I can confirm that I certainly have never heard it and that it sounds very off to me.

I can recognize some of those words.
It is not usual in the mundo hispan speak own in the formal language or culture?

@terdon I think I will now

@Zanna i checked the download root and find this
Resolving download.oracle.com (download.oracle.com)... 72.247.184.129, 72.247.184.107

As you wish, but be aware that people will just assume you don't know how to speak. Unless they happen to be Peruvians, apparently

@jokerdino it's not used in the world of formal Spanish

11:34 AM
it is not usual in the spanish speaking world...

@Zanna does it mean they ban us

ah yes, that's exactly what I meant when I wrote that.

@jokerdino THere's a typo, it's missing an "ni", but it means "It isn't common in the Spanish speaking world nor is it used in formal or educated language"

@Sandro what were you trying to install when you got that error? I mean what command

this is what eveything i did
i wanted to install jdk and then here suggested me to install openjdk and now when i run this command sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk i get the shared link error
the 403 error means they ban my country ip

11:39 AM
it seems like you previously tried to install oracle java using the oracle java 7 installer
403 could mean that, but could be other reasons...

what is the issue
how can i make sure

@Sandro just remove oracle-java-7
the error was from your previous attempt to install that package

Anwar is right, or rather remove oracle java 7 installer

i seached oracle in my ubuntu software there is no such app installed

sudo apt-get purge oracle-java7-installer
@Sandro Ubuntu repo doesn't supply oracle jre/jdk

11:42 AM
@Anwar i copied your command and waitting for it

they used to provide it when Java was owned by Sun. probably stopped from jdk/jre 7

you must have got this from ppa or website somewhere

it's from webupd8 i believe
that script basically downloads the tar.gz file and sets up the jdk extracting, create alternatives links etc.

@Anwar i get this pastebin.com/U1VvXfpT

Nice.

11:45 AM
@Anwar so can i run
sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jdk

yes.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
openjdk-8-jdk is already the newest version (8u91-b14-3ubuntu1~16.04.1).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
g++ g++-5 libalgorithm-diff-perl libalgorithm-diff-xs-perl
libalgorithm-merge-perl libstdc++-5-dev
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 137 not upgraded
it seems openjdk is successfuly installed on my pc @Anwar
did i get right

use javac -version to test

javac 1.8.0_91

looks like it's from openjdk-8-jdk (8u91)
@Anwar Thanks a lottttttttttttttttttttt. — jax 1 min ago
felt good :)

11:50 AM
@Anwar :) :) I already upvoted your answer there
@Sandro also do java -version

openjdk version "1.8.0_91"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_91-8u91-b14-3ubuntu1~16.04.1-b14)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.91-b14, mixed mode)

looks good

yeah thanks

thanks to @Anwar :)

yeah thanks @Anwar

12:15 PM
thanks Zanna. I felt good because I think It was a big help for them. They said, in that wubi install they had 3 years of works . the submission date was near. OP asked a second question and I got that info from commenting there

OT or not version specific? askubuntu.com/questions/824787/…

@Anwar that's no kind of "but"... you are awesome :)
@Arronical I think Mark might be being a bit overzealous with the EOL CVs today... that one I'm unsure about, but I saw one in review that really wasn't version specific imo... I don't blame him though, it's hard to decide...
I'm voting unclear on that one since "no such option on my computer" seems too vague to me

He'd not voted when I saw it. Cheers for the advice.

you know better than me! just saying what I did

Nah, I'm very uninitiated when it comes to SE site management. This is another tricky one, Mark's on the case again, but it really seems to be a hardware question in one sense.

Q: Dota2 optimization for Ubuntu 16.04

OborotenbyI tried to play dota2 on lowest video configuration. In teamfights I had about 10 fps. My VGA controller information: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Can u give me any advices for optimization?

12:34 PM
hmm yeah, well it's a reasonable question in theory but I agree it's about hardware in the circumstances and should be on Superuser imo
I'll vote not about Ubuntu
my brother just joined AU :)

about 5 years ago

?

:(

what have I done??

I joined the site about 4 years and 11 months ago.

12:41 PM
oh! I am an idiot, forgive me, brother <3

I thought @jokerdino was alluding to being your brother from another mother!

s/five\ time\ zones// *hug*
@Arronical but I missed it :(

You just wanna be friends?
BTW, I think I found your brother.

That was a weird convo to read @Zanna @jokerdino

:/

12:49 PM
@jokerdino heh how?

@Zanna mod stalking powers

I thought he was but this person is asking about Windows.

this is my other brother askubuntu.com/users/594579/haxel (you are my brother & everything else)

@Zanna Japan?

12:52 PM
@Zacharee1 yes he's been living there for 3 years

@Zanna Panda's gonna be jealous :p

I think I already mentioned it when Panda was around

Then Panda is already jealous

@jokerdino and what was your guess?

Ralf Swan
@Zacharee1 I am close to my sister. She also doubles up as my friend.

12:57 PM
^_^
@Zacharee1 but I don't think the diamond comes with psychic powers

But this convo with Zanna went like this:

>_<

What's that? Liquid aluminium or something like that?

@jokerdino is that really platinum?
jinx @ByteCommander ;)

I don't know what those are.

12:59 PM
@Takkat ?
Rinzy!

@ByteCommander we both thought about the chemical nature of that metal.

And what does that have to do with a jinx?

The thing that you say when both people think about the same thing at the same time.

now I'm wondering how I can fix the fire & devastation I caused

@Zanna she's a nice person when we are not fighting.

1:03 PM
@jokerdino leo.org translates it as synonym of misadventurer or curse of a witch...

If two people think the same it can only come from black magic spelled by a dino

> when two people coincidentally say the same phrase together at the same time, the first one to then say "jinx" puts bad luck on.

Never heard of that...

<-- is a magician today
4

@jokerdino my brother and I have mostly been as close as those two delimiters // but now we don't talk enough. Too many time zones. We don't fight though

1:05 PM
@Takkat going to call yourself Rincewind now?

when I was a kid, it was a game... if two people say the same thing at the same time, and one says 'jinx' the other one can't speak until the jinxer breaks the jinx

Some magic powder and two mv commands rescued a laptop from a re-install

woohoo!

@ByteCommander no no no no Rinz is unique!

AH, I found what you were talking about
Jinx is children's game with varying rules and penalties that occurs when two people unintentionally speak the same word or phrase simultaneously. == Rules == A jinx can be initiated when at least two people say any same word or phrase at the same time. One of them then calls "jinx" on the other. The game ends when someone speaks the jinxee's name, or the jinxee speaks. In the latter case, the jinxee loses the game, and often a penalty is exacted, typically a punch on the arm. == Penalties == Common penalties for losing or violating a jinx are a pinch, owing a soda, a poke, or a punch in the arm...

1:11 PM
@Zanna we could go on but this probably is not the best place ;)

@jokerdino ;)
5 votes left! been cleaning up again. Better save these for later... time to go to work

Is Crouton on-topic here?

A: Crouton install vs Crouton-based Ubuntu problem

OliHistorical conversations on this have mirrored your question fairly exactly: What gets installed is Ubuntu, proper. Questions about using it are on topic. How it's installed (and how it boots) are not Ubuntu proper and are off-topic. That conversation stemmed from a bunch of questions being t...

Thank you. I wasn't familiar with this Crouton thing previously
The title is too un-related

1:31 PM
Checkout @KazWolfe in HNQ askubuntu.com/questions/824677/…

@Anwar I think it must be different at some levels though, like wsl? It's an ubuntu env on top of... what?

what I understood, it's some scripting thing to help install Ubuntu on Chromebook. after install it's Ubuntu

It runs in a chroot though I think? Maybe I misunderstood

may be. don't know much about it

Best to just ignore me, I'm more trouble than use :)

1:43 PM
Don't make yourself so small :)

Thanks. The article says same as you did @Zanna

My info comes from reading that article several times, but could be wrong

and it was helpful and I don't agree with the last part of that sentence

The consensus was as long as we are not talking about installing crouton, it's on topic.

@ByteCommander A good way of putting this is 'Don't belittle yourself'

2:00 PM
aha

The hell, I run fsck and then loged in my system

askubuntu.com/questions/824814/hard-drive-not-spinning-down is this OT as on Bananian, or are they accessing it from Ubuntu? I may have voted hastily!

2:12 PM
@Arronical @terdon want to move that one over to U+L?

@Rinzwind Yeah, checking with the Raspberry Pi mods in case it's on topic there

O_O

lol

askubuntu.com/questions/824829/…. This one is strange, I can only assume that David has moved part of the question into an answer as in interim stage?

2:23 PM
Well, glad I managed to get a new user to shoot way up on the rep board

Q: Why limit edits?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceWhen I get bored at school literally all I have is coming here and editing questions (hehe), but usually there aren't 3K+ rep users on the review queue when I'm on, and so I'm limited to I believe 4 edits to suggest at once. Why limit the amount of edits I can suggest?

Hey, @user72216, why'd you change your username, out of curiosity?

2:47 PM
anyone care to proof read this on flaws?

A: MIGRATE UBUNTU SERVER

Rinzwinduntested. I'll let jaegar decide if it worked :) Directories you want... /etc/passwd - users /etc/shadow - encrypted passwords for users /etc/group - groups /etc/gshadow - encrypted passwords for groups /var/spool/mail - user local mail /home - user data On the old system ... mkdir /tmp/...

@Arronical I don't really get David's answer but I just added one myself as I don't think we have .bash_profile
@Rinzwind I can't see properly on mobile, it completely mangles the formatting... I ran out of votes again also!
@jokerdino better location needed :)

Mmhmm

@jokerdino cookie?

yes sure thing please

with/without sugar?

2:56 PM
edibles only.

@Arronical oh yeah I think he took OP's self answer from question? But he should make a CW in that case

there
2 cookies

o-o

@Rinzwind Looks sane enough. I'd recommend imaging but nobody bothers doing that.

Voted that as duplicate. was it a dupe?
not sure... probably not

3:08 PM
@AskUbuntuMeta answered.

For everyone ^ (vegan)

stop. you're making me hungry

too much calories

i didn't have breakfast yet ;-;
so this is borderline torture

I clicked on "Leave Open" thinking it's a "Close" button on a test :(

3:18 PM
@Anwar sorry, we have to ban you from the site now.
it was nice having you around :(

I even knew it was a deleted question. I opened the link!
ban me

@jokerdino gives you more energy, so you can stay here longer
@Anwar yesterday my fat fingers did some kind of stupid double click on "no action needed" reviewing first posts and I had to go back, find them, edit the heck out of them and still feel like I screwed up because I didn't understand what they were about...

happens
I was saying myself "Leave closed" while pressing the button

@Anwar Lol happens!

@KazWolfe pretend you didn't tell me that

3:25 PM
This is why I ask instead of do ^~^

I have to take a break away from the computer and got get lunch.

@L.D.James Have a good one

asking same question askubuntu.com/q/824867/61218

@Anwar Done.

noooooo
@jokerdino can you ban yourself?

3:31 PM
No

please try!

No!

Please don't

Please, have Oli ban you... ;) you're working hard. you need some rest.

3:33 PM
@Anwar don't think so.

they edited the photo

it's a photo grabbed from somewhere online to show their problem

makes sense

i don't think it's a valid question, though.

looks like a Microsoft Message

3:38 PM
It is
They tried to install ubuntu & it didn't boot

They said they installed.
I don't have much experience with these UEFI enabled devices

Q: Mousepad not working after suspend Ubuntu 16.04

ADanMy mousepad is not working after suspend on a Lenovo E460. It used to work perfectly but after this it no longer even appears in xinput. I have tried to plug in a mouse and that works fine. Edit: Restarting etc. does not make it work again, it is completely gone as of after the suspend.

did someone say EFI?
What's the implementation

teach me instead :)

Hi all :D

3:41 PM
Hi @SeverusTux

hi

@Anwar they probably did the installation but it failed
Hi @SeverusTux :)

i'm guessing Ubuntu mangled the EFI boot order. They can fix the Windows bootloader from an install disk, and then move Grub to the start.

Not enough info to help

3:42 PM
Oh dear, I think I've just asked a really stupid question, and have hugely over complicated something simple!

Oh, wait that's 0xC000000F?
Yeah that's definitely not on topic here

Laughed my but off , worth watching if you are not busy : youtu.be/-NkhD3xquMU?t=10

...unless you're a UEFI guru like @KazWolfe apparently
@Arronical unlikely :) your questions are always good

VTU?
@Zanna no, this is windows itself, not UEFI.

3:45 PM
voted to close

@Anwar shame...

i wonder why it got deleted...
it's a sorta valid question. I guess OP found a solution.

why? it was live then
i think so @KazWolfe

@Anwar good thing they didn't tag it as UTT. Another email that would have never been opened.

ha ha!

3:47 PM
can we get a VTU @jokerdino?

What is that?
Not going to undelete that q.

Vote To Undelete
eh, i'll let my vote expire then. It seems to be valid from over here, but I don't have hte diamond, so not my call.

it was an easy q. but they weren't clear on "messed up"
the font was supposed to look exactly like that with full hinting

@Zanna No seriously, @ByteCommander was the kind and patient one today!

@jokerdino I think I found a bug in UTT

3:52 PM
That's easy

@jokerdino I found a bug in UTT.
It opens sometimes.

lol

Yes, that's a critical bug in Unity actually.
If Unity was proper, we won't need UTT ;)

fair point
CCSM is my favorite
UTT doesn't handle compiz profiles other than default unity I observed

It's not meant for professionals like you ;)
It's only for novice users who think they are customizing things like they are power users.

3:58 PM
hmm...

noob software is good if you want something simple done fast and can't bother to remember things.
like gsettings names.
because who actually remembers gsettings strings

but I always forget UTT's settings
