@KazWolfe You need some good ol H202
oh god...
I have to watch this for Stagecraft

all the soap in the world can't clean me.

ITS A 9 MINUTE POWERPOINT
@KazWolfe the innuendos!!!
@edwinksl I tried to star Zanna's congrats message for your 4k, but it didn't work :(
So, @edwinksl congrats on 4k!
maybe someone will star that ;p
Only 6k more to go

@Zacharee1 you are laughing at my crappy 4k :'(

12:03 AM
But don't worry, I'll still be right where I am, at 1020 :p
@edwinksl Wat! :(

@Zach, some replies for you here: askubuntu.com/questions/823752/…

@Seth we're gonna have to reopen the question

ping me when needed.
I'm too busy to read all the text there and figure it out,

I'd say reopen and nuke comments, @Seth

right now?

12:12 AM
So I know it's a dupe of that other question, but the most upvoted answer on that question no longer works, and the second one (that's correct) isn't so obvious
Should I just answer this one with the ntfsfix solution?

i'd say it's valid enough
but i'm not a mod, so that decision doesn't lie with me

Whoa, it's a good thing James T isn't in the C++ room

@Zacharee1 sounds like i should check it out

lol
mebeh

well I reopened it.

12:18 AM
@Seth seth for mod of the year

Kaz, back at it again with the double pings ;p

sorry. my \ key gets in the way
i miss my old keyboard :'(

Should this be converted into a comment or just get deleted as NAA (link only)? askubuntu.com/a/399029/367990

@ByteCommander it's a dupe
@Seth answered
That's a pretty funny error

Q: Windows 10 update breaks grub loader...I break it more...HELP

Jacob NoakesSo Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have ruined my grub loader. An auto-update caused my boot up to go to grub recovery. It also made my kali linux (used for Info sec class) partition unbootable. I couldn't even get kali to boot from a usb (the usb was recognized, but kali would get stuck tr...

@edwinksl go to MSE and get murdered

What does % do in math operations in Java/C?

@KazWolfe noooooooo i shall be content with my 103 rep in MSE

@edwinksl I get the feeling people might agree with that

@Zacharee1 you did pretty well in MSE as far as i can tell

12:36 AM
although they may also say that including linebreaks in the starwall could end up cutting every other star out

still a risky proposition
i can see myself getting -20
@Zacharee1 you have 171 rep, you can tank some downvotes :p

if it's reported as a bug you may get some more ability...

@edwinksl nahh

Hello. I have one homework question I'd like to ask >_> hopefully I don't get killed for this: in a big-endian byte, what is bit number of MSB?

wut

12:39 AM
^ I never heard of bit number either

nope
here is a perfect example of why LOAs are bad stackoverflow.com/questions/4191687/…

time to flag

won't help
it's been accepted

@edwinksl my HW question? ;_;

lol

12:46 AM
@Zacharee1 maybe a kind >3k user will add real content to the post

@Zacharee1 That's not actually LOA, but it isn't of the best quality either.

Q: Successfully changed IP address but 'ip addr' and 'ifconfig' don't show it

JasonI've searched all over the google for an answer. I've statically changed my ip address but nothing detects it. I can successfully ping and SSH to any host on my subnet but 'ip addr' and 'ifconfig' still show my old ip address that I obtained from DHCP. /etc/network/interfaces auto enp63s0 ifa...

(so your point still mostly stands, it's just not flaggable)

what do you mean?
> Have look at Apache Commons Math. Here is the API docs. The classes of interest, Mean and Median.
It doesn't give me much to go on

12:49 AM
@Zacharee1 not much, no, but it is still an answer.
The other answer is definitely better because it provides examples, but they are both considered answers.
uh oh
phew. Thought nautilus had bugged and deleted all the stuff on my flash drive.

lol
Who wants to try to break my code? gist.github.com/b87ebdb206befd6f18ba5274de6b0897
use this to run it compilejava.net

removes semicolon
I broke it
oh that's not what you meant ;p

well it won't even run in the first place
online
@Seth sigh

@Zacharee1 APCS?

@Zacharee1 I learn from the best ;)

@Zacharee1 Do they still make you use only pencil and paper?

no wat

yup. You're only allowed to use pencil and paper for the entire test.
Better practice your curly braces.

lol

the System.out.println crap hurts my eyes so much

12:57 AM

heh

Great. Nautilus messed up the NTFS filesystem on my flash drive.

@edwinksl I swear I've seen that before

1:04 AM
@Zacharee1 lol i don't even know what is being asked :/

OK, run this ideone.com/K5BBws
Ignore that it tells you the number for option A
you know what? Just get an IDE and run it...

Q: Client can connect to server but can't access the Internet. Not ip forward problem

erliangI was using setup-simple-pptp-vpn.sh to building my pptp server. Here is my server info: $ cat /etc/*-release | grep VERSION= VERSION="16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus)" $ pptpd -v pptpd v1.4.0 I was use Ubuntu 14.04 as my server system and it works fine. Here is the log when I connect to my server...

@Serg no, Launcher need not be always hidden in GNOME, See mine :
And also, Indicators are Displayed Like this :
Enabling Extension Dash to Dock Makes the launcher Like this. As a GNOME user, I would love to see your app Working on GNOME :D :) .
The Git repo of this might give you some idea : github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock , But unfortunately, everything is written in JavaScript. Hope you know js :P

2:21 AM
The launcher belongs on the bottom of the desktop IMHO.

eww

2:45 AM
@Seth If you like applets on top, You can do that in GNOME

@SeverusTux no, I was referring to the launcher at the bottom comment :)
I can't stand GNOME period.
although it does look pretty.

3:18 AM
@Seth you must love bottom launcher! I demand it!
In other news it sucks to be these 4 guys...

3:34 AM
i dislike gnome simply for the fact that you need extension to have app indicators on top. That's why I'm hesitant to rewrite my indicator for gnome. I mean, it can be done, but my indicator makes more sense in context of Unity desktop

I like the right click on desktop to get the menu and no "start button" in any corner with a dock on the bottom and indicators and active stuff icons across the top, but that's me
It feels neater/cleaner to me.

@SeverusTux i know about those extensions. My requirements are typically that whatever i write requires minimum external things needed to install
3

@Serg gets ten awesome points for thinking about not introducing dependencies

:D

so you wouldn't like being a javascript dev

3:39 AM
I don't exactly like JavaScript from the user point of view.
Never tried writing JavaScript code though

I don't think that's what he means. Using dependencies is fine as long as it's not "install all this junk first to get my mini-app to work"... like say some wxwidgets applications on windows back in the day
If either one of you hasn't seen the destroy all software it comes up every time someone says javascript

@RobotHumans yup, exactly that

@RobotHumans lmao

yeah. chuck/lazypower turned me on to that one. it's too funny

nice, especially last part, Batman

3:48 AM
"well this is addition, so obviously you can flip the operands and the same thing comes out - which you can see you do" was the one that killed me

haha
that is so nonsensical, at least to the untrained eye

in each of the cases, if you try, you can see what is probably going on. the funny is because of the counterintuitiveness of most of them.

4:07 AM
My flight is at 11:00 at night
Going to HongKong first
then korea

a trip to hong kong would be nice sometime
it's on my list along with new zealand and the netherlands

@Zanna so today i got very slow shutdown. I think you got the same on MATE sometime. I am starting to dislike systemd
actually,no. I already don't like it. This is just +1 to my dislike

5:01 AM
For me "slow shutdown" is more than 3 seconds but yeah, the time varies weirdly
I've changed my boot params from quiet splash to initcall_debug and no_console_suspend. I'm thinking I might even add ignore_loglevel
still, I've got little idea what the issue is, need to keep watching
my params: intel_idle.max_cstate=1 resume=/dev/mmcblk0p3 no_console_suspend initcall_debug

GTK3 , What the actual F.....

wat

not what you were expecting?

did you want the max min and kill on the right or something? that's in dconf/gconf

5:22 AM
anybody want their minds bent into a torus?
tl;dr: play these games. your will be confused as hell. good games, though.

i'm up for mindbending sometimes...

@KazWolfe no idea what is happening

@edwinksl it's like that the entire series.
why is my enter button so touchy ;_;

wtffff ok i made some progress

you're on sub 1?
it's a very complicated sort of puzzle/adventure/escape flash game

5:28 AM
it's touchy b/c the cyber cthulu wills it (;,;)

sub 1 was the easiest of them all lol
uphill climb from here
the series itself has very complex lore that is pretty damn hard to understand.
the game itself is annoying puzzle-wise, but the lore is the mind-killer

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at end of body, link following arrow in body, pattern-matching website in body: Nuts And Brain Functions? by blackmonhio on askubuntu.com

@KazWolfe random pressing gave me an item ftw

yep. that sounds normal

5:45 AM
WTF
breakthrough
well stuck again

wtf...

QProgressDialog doesn't want to stay hidden...

hru @NathanOsman

Good, and you?

5:55 AM
@NathanOsman doing great. This morning at 5:00 am I will leave for fishing trip with my previous company :D

I've never been fishing yet.

then Wednesday I take a 30 mile bike ride to town of webster then 30 miles back

Is it fairly easy?

@NathanOsman deep sea fishing :)

5:56 AM
@NathanOsman it's been years since I fished on a lake... YEARS

60 miles. O_o

@NathanOsman it takes skill to tie the hook and to hook the worm or fake bait

I imagine.

@NathanOsman more than that cuz I'll be biking all around webster too

fishing with hooks?
bah. we use login forms.

5:57 AM
@KazWolfe likely

javascript hurts my brain

@KazWolfe this is frustrating

@edwinksl Yep. What game are you on right now?

still 1 ._.

where are you stuck?

6:03 AM
i have the ancient crystal

Is there anyone here who's able to delete spam posts ?

3 out of presumably 4 pieces found

@edwinksl oh. you're on that one.
which corner do you not have?

I take it as no . . . . Please ping me if there's a spam post appears. I'd like to test something

@Serg what are you trying now

6:05 AM
I can vote to delete.
...if it's closed.

@KazWolfe a small experiment

of...?

@Serg we can all do it - 6 spam flags and it's gone, no mod hammer required

>:) itz a zekret for nau

@KazWolfe top right corner

6:07 AM
@Zanna I know, but i'd like to test something . . .

@edwinksl hint: transformer.
@Serg if you tell us, we may be able to confirm or deny. Or, we can help facilitate it.

@KazWolfe that spoon thing was quite wtf. i randomly tried crap and it worked.

oh, top right.
my bad. dyslexia strikes again!

@KazWolfe just ping me when one spam post appears and don't delete till I edit it

hint: pipes

6:08 AM
ಠ_ಠ
> "This is an intended change. It was communicated in the Qt 5.5 changelog."
I really should read those changelogs...

all bugs are really features. software devs are lazy.
that reminds me... i need to provision my new laptop to access my server so I can get the new dev onboard. *sigh*
rip sleep

@KazWolfe and random crap worked again

@edwinksl nothing in these games are random.
but one of the rules is quite literally "click everything"

@KazWolfe i am not sure why the combination i picked burst the pipe

6:13 AM
now. who wants to help me provision a new device with StrongSwan?

anyway gg wp i got past first round
that's enough for me

you know where the bells are?

yeah

the room to the left has the two pipes and the screws?
the screw pattern is the solution

lmao
now that makes sense
i did glance at the screws but didn't notice the pattern
good one

6:15 AM
Engrish people, need grammar help
> conflict between tradition and modernity, society and individual,
rationality and sensibility, advanced and backward technologies, internal
and external.
Conflict or conflicts ?

i think either is acceptable, though conflicts is preferred.
also...
user image
3

@Serg for grammar it doesn't matter really, as a stylistic choice I would use conflicts to express the fact that there are multiple stakeholders and battlegrounds in such conflict(s)

is bitbucket any good?
GitHub is being annoying and not letting me have private repos for free under a organization.
also... i really wish github would opensource their platform.
i mean, really. it's such an amazing system. OSS would be amazing.

I think launchpad has private projects, no ?

have to use git because reasons
Plus, launchpad's project management system is insanely confusing, and I don't know how they handle Java.
teaching git to noob devs is already gonna be hard. I really don't want to throw them right into launchpad.

6:29 AM
@KazWolfe launchpad works with git too. You need to register ssh keys and configure your git

oh god. or... is gitlab okay?

This fly drives me nuts
Tango down
Apparently it is possible to make private project

and i'm using it now
plus our actual infra uses gitlab so...

if we're not allowed to answer this, can't we close it or something? I have the answer in one measly line... askubuntu.com/questions/824157/…

@KazWolfe yeah i use private repos there for work and it works well enough

6:40 AM
yeah, i'll use it until we have enough funding to host our own infra
yay micro-startups with no budget!

@Zanna tricky. do we have a homework policy for AU?

@Zanna Why did you re-add the user management tag?
We're not adding or removing users on the system, we're just getting names from a script.

@KazWolfe because David F added it and the script is meant to pass the list to adduser to add users

@Zanna Where does it say that?

@edwinksl on meta, Oli says "just answer the question, don't read minds" but others disagree

6:43 AM
@Zanna i'll handle that question, already writing an answer

oh never mind i'm blind

@KazWolfe in the question?

(as in i'm actually blind. yay glasses!)

@Serg seems unfair hahaha
cut -d ',' -f 2 file | while read ; do sudo adduser ; done ?

@Zanna personally i am leaning towards downvoting for no research effort

6:49 AM
well idk who upvoted it, wasn't me, but I've seen a lot worse on the no research front

it's a valid question...
not everybody researches everything as far as possible. if so, we'd have no answers ever lol

when you know nothing, research is very hard
you have to have knowledge to stick knowledge to

@KazWolfe i think it is reasonable to expect some effort, more so when OP admits it is a homework problem

agree ^
but the question looks sort of abandoned - they may not come back!

yeah, some effort is possible, but it's not our decision to deny help because it's homework

6:50 AM
it's just lying there like bait

for all we know, OP tried everything he could think of and just hit dead ends everywhere.

or she

but i don't know that. i can only read what OP writes and it demonstrably shows lack of effort

to be fair, one of my highest rated questions was no-effort
or well, little effort.

the thing is, asking SE is What You Would Do in the real (non-school) world, imho, so I support it
What kills me is when students present me with something they pasted direct from wikipedia, full of words they don't understand
That fills me with fury

6:53 AM
unless they penned that wikipedia section
did that once. researched a topic, heavily edited wikipedia page on said topic, turned in paper.

Don't tell me I can't tell which kid it is

(yay audit proofing that i actually wrote both lol)

I don't care where they get the information as long as they UNDERSTAND it

point is, we should be a site to encourage discourse and learning at all levels.

but when I say "so what does this mean, I don't know this word here in your homework" and they have no idea, it's an insult... but it's not the kid I blame, it's the system

6:56 AM
we shouldn't discriminate against students and turn them away because they're students who are supposed to be learning.

where it's only the answer that matters and not the process... process is everything

imo, being able to ask questions about things you don't know is a really valuable skill.
no, it's not a substitute to learning the material, but it should still be allowed.

like I said, SE is what people actually use in actual work
I know nothing without the internet

my brother is a coder, he says in a normal day, ~10 visits to SO are required

6:58 AM
10?!
I bow before our new coder god.

@Zanna No need for while, just use xargs. Also, answer posted, nothing particularly specific. At the very least they can google how to use awk or cut , at least that's some work of their own

@Serg Just do it in Python(tm)!

i like how you all are helpful but this may do more harm than good

@KazWolfe I would, but that would count as cheating
